Fracture Characteristics of Frit Bonding through In-Situ Nano-Indentation Testing

Because frit bonding material is brittle, sudden impacts such as dropping may damage the bonding significantly. Strain-rate-controlled in-situ nano-indentation testing, which can determine localized material properties, was carried out on the frit-bonded specimen, especially on the frit bonding matrix and the filler. The results were compared with the drop-impact fracture behavior to understand the fracture characteristics. Mechanical properties at static condition or low strain rate did not show proper relationship with the fracture tendency of the drop tested result of the frit bonding. From the relationship between fracture toughness and the ratio of modulus/hardness, fracture characteristics at the drop impact situation could be estimated by the values at the high strain rate nano-indentation. The ratio between modulus and hardness on frit matrix showed close relationship with drop impact fracture. Though crack propagation path deflected at filler interface, filler property gave less influence on fracture tendency of drop impact fracture due to its small volume fraction. The properties of frit matrix were crucial to the fracture characteristics of the frit bonding.

Centrifugal pumps are being widely used in many industrial and commercial *** of these pumps are being operated at constant speed but could provide energy savings through adjustable speed *** purpose of this study was to get the energy saving rates of the multistage centrifugal pump with variable speed *** this investigation an experimental set up of variable flow and pressure system was made to get energy saving rates and numerical analyses are applied to validate the pump *** energy saving and therefore the cost saving depends on the specific duty cycle of which the machine *** cycle is the proportion of time during which a component,device and system is *** duty cycle segmented into different flow rates and weighting the average value for each segment by the interval *** system was operated at 50%or less of the pump *** input power of the system was carried out by pump characteristics curve of each operating *** energy consumption was done by the product of specific duty cycle and the input power of the system for constant speed and variable speed drive *** total energy consumed for constant speed drive pump was 75,770 k *** and for variable speed drive pump was 31,700 k *** total energy saving of the system was 44,070 k *** or 58.16%***,this paper suggests a method of implementing an energy saving on variable-flow and pressure system of the multistage centrifugal pump.

AIM: To report a case of branch retinal artery obstruction (BRAO) complicated after anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION). METHODS: A 42 year-old woman who complained of visual disturbance was performed ophthalmological examinations such as fundus photography, fluorescent angiography (FAG) and visual field test. RESULTS: At first visit, disc swelling was noted and arterial circulation was intact, however, 1 week after onset, the inferior branch retinal artery began to shrink and the flame hemorrhage intensified. Sixteen months later, the optic disc evidenced an atrophic change; additionally, a ghost vessel in the inferior branch retinal artery was found. CONCLUSION: We report a case of complications of BRAO arising after AION which caused the mechanical compression on the arterial circulation.

Surgical palliation of unresectable pancreatic head cancer in elderly patients

AIM: To determine if surgical biliary bypass would provide improved quality of residual life and safe palliation in elderly patients with unresectable pancreatic head cancer. METHODS: Nineteen patients, 65 years of age or older, were managed with surgical biliary bypass (Group A). These patients were compared with 19 patients under 65 years of age who were managed with surgical biliary bypass (Group B). In addition, the results for group A were compared with those obtained from 17 patients, 65 years of age or older (Group C), who received percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage to evaluate the quality of residual life. RESULTS: Five patients (26.0%) in Group A had complications, including one intraabdominal abscess, one pulmonary atelectasis, and three wound infections. One death (5.3%) occurred on postoperative day 3. With respect to morbidity, mortality, and postoperative hospitalization, no statistically significant difference was noted between Groups A and B. The number of readmissions and the rate of recurrent jaundice were lower in Group A than in Group C, to a statistically significant degree (P = 0.019, P = 0.029, respectively). The median hospital-free survival period and themedian overall survival were also signifi cantly longer in Group A (P = 0.001 and P < 0.001, respectively). CONCLUSION: Surgical palliation does not increase the morbidity or mortality rates, but it does increase the survival rate and improve the quality of life in elderly patients with unresectable pancreatic head cancer.

AIM: To investigate relationships between colorectal adenoma incidence, metabolic syndrome (MS) components and lifestyle factors. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study using data from individuals who had multiple sigmoidoscopies for colon cancer at the Health Promotion Center of Ulsan University Hospital in Korea from 1998 to 2007. RESULTS: By multivariate analysis, the incidence of distal colon adenoma was increased by more than 1.76 times in individuals with at least one component of MS compared to those without a component of MS. After adjustment for age, gender, smoking, drinking, and physical exercise, only high body mass index (BMI) was significantly associated with the incidence of distal colon adenoma (Hazard ratio 1.66, 95% confidence interval 1.05-2.62). CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that high BMI may increase the risk of colorectal adenoma in Korean adults.

As-hot-rolled medium-entropy alloys(MEAs)with unevenly distributed grain sizes of face-centered cubic grains exhibit better yield strength without uniform elongation loss compared to cold-rolled and an-nealed *** operation of dynamic recrystallization(DRX)during several hot rolling passes leads to a wide range of grain sizes from submicrons to tens of micrometers due to the grain growth after nucleation:early recrystallized grains are coarser than recently recrystallized *** only the grain size but internal dislocation density of the recently recrystallized grain is *** the tensile deformation of the hot-rolled MEAs at-196 ℃,dislocation pile-ups in the relatively soft and fine DRX grains enhance yield stress and hetero-deformation-induced strain *** to the enhanced yield stress of the as-hot-rolled MEAs,stress-induced martensitic transformation easily ***,partially DRXed MEAs hot-rolled at 800 ℃ have lower yield stress than fully DRXed ones,hot-rolled at 900 and 1000 ℃.This is attributed to the softening effect of the stress-induced body-centered cubic martensitic transformation in unrecrystallized coarse grains prior to the yielding,which lowers the yield stress of the partially DRXed *** yielding,the martensitic transformation facilitates strain hard-ening and early necking is *** study presents a fresh outlook on the uneven distribution of grain sizes by hot rolling beneficial to mechanical responses of uniform elongation of~45%despite the as-rolled states with an advantage of simplified thermo-mechanical processes.
