In vitro Cyto and Blood Compatibility of Titanium Containing Diamond-Like Carbon Prepared by Hybrid Sputtering Method

In recent years, diamond-like carbon films （DLC） have been given more attention in research in the biomedical industry due to their potential application as surface coating on biomedical materials such as metals and polymer substrates. There are many ways to prepare metal containing DLC films deposited on polymeric film substrates, such as coatings from car- bonaceous precursors and some means that incorporate other elements. In this study, we in- vestigated both the surface and biocompatible properties of titanium containing DLC （Ti-DLC） films. The Ti-DLC films were prepared on the surface of poly （ethylene terephthalate）（PET） film as a function of the deposition power level using reactive sputtering technique. The films＇ hydrophilicity was studied by contact angle and surface energy tests. Their surface morphology was studied by scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and atomic force microscopy （AFM）. Their elemental chemical composition was analyzed using energy dispersive X-spectra （EDX） and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy （XPS）. Their blood and cell compatibility was studied by in vitro tests, including tests on platelet adhesion, thrombus formation, whole blood clotting time and osteoblast cell compatibility. Significant changes in the morphological and chemical composition of the Ti-DLC films were observed and found to be a function of the deposition level. These morphological and chemical changes reduced the interfacial tension between Ti-DLC and blood proteins as well as resisted the adhesion and activation of platelets on the surface of the Ti-DLC films. The cell compatibility results exhibited significant growth of osteoblast cells on the surface of Ti incorporated DLC film compared with that of DLC film surface.

Recent cumulative findings signify the adaptive immunity of materials as a key agenda in tissue healing that can improve regenerative events and outcomes. Modulating immune responses, mainly the recruitment and functions of T and B cells and their further interplay with innate immune cells (e.g., dendritic cells, macrophages) can be orchestrated by materials. For instance, decellularized matrices have been shown to promote muscle healing by inducing T helper 2 (Th2) cell immunity, while synthetic biopolymers exhibit differential effects on B cell responses and fibrosis compared decellularized matrices. We discuss the recent findings on how implantable materials instruct the adaptive immune events and the subsequent tissue healing process. In particular, we dissect the materials’ physicochemical properties (shape, size, topology, degradation, rigidity, and matrix dynamic mechanics) to demonstrate the relations of these parameters with the adaptive immune responses in vitro and the underlying biological mechanisms. Furthermore, we present evidence of recent in vivo phenomena, including tissue healing, cancer progression, and fibrosis, wherein biomaterials potentially shape adaptive immune cell functions and in vivo outcomes. Our discussion will help understand the materials-regulated immunology events more deeply, and offer the design rationale of materials with tunable matrix properties for accelerated tissue repair and regeneration.

Rigidity(or stiffness)of materials and extracellular matrix has proven to be one of the most significant extracellular physicochemical cues that can control diverse cell behaviors,such as contractility,motility,and spreading,and the resultant pathophysiological *** 2D materials engineered with tunable rigidity have enabled researchers to elucidate the roles of matrix biophysical cues in diverse cellular events,including migration,lineage specification,and mechanical ***,the recent findings accumulated under 3D environments with viscoelastic and remodeling properties pointed to the importance of dynamically changing rigidity in cell fate control,tissue repair,and disease ***,here we aim to highlight the works related with material/matrix-rigidity-mediated cell and tissue behaviors,with a brief outlook into the studies on the effects of material/matrix rigidity on cell behaviors in 2D systems,further discussion of the events and considerations in tissue-mimicking 3D conditions,and then examination of the in vivo findings that concern material/matrix *** current discussion will help understand the material/matrix-rigidity-mediated biological phenomena and further leverage the concepts to find therapeutic targets and to design implantable materials for the treatment of damaged and diseased tissues.

Portal vein thrombosis(PVT)is no longer a definitive contraindication in liver transplants(LTs)[1].Complex vascular reconstructions such as cavoportal hemitransposition(CPHT)[2–5],renoportal anastomosis(RPA)[6,7],and use of sizable collaterals(pericholedochal varix[8,9],coronary vein,peripancreatic or perigastroesophageal varices[10],right superior colic vein[11],ileocolic vein[12],and left gastric vein[13]),or combined liverpancreas-small bowel transplant[14]are required for portal inflow in patients with total portosplenomesenteric thrombosis.

Over the years,zinc-ion batteries(ZIBs)have attracted attention as a promising next-generation energy storage technology because of their excellent safety,long cycling performance,eco-friendliness,and high-power ***,issues,such as the corrosion and dissolution of the Zn anode,limited wet-tability,and lack of sufficient nucleation sites for Zn plating,have limited their practical *** introduction of a protective layer comprising of tellurium(Te)nanobelts onto the surface of Zn anode has emerged as a promising approach to overcome these limitations and improve the electrochemical behav-ior by enhancing the safety and wettability of ZIBs,as well as providing numerous nucleation sites for Zn *** the presence of a Te-based protective layer,the energy power density of the surface-engineered Zn anode improved significantly(ranging from 310 to 144 W h kg^(-1),over a power density range of 270 to 1,800 W kg^(-1)),and the lifespan capability was *** results demonstrate that the proposed strategy of employing Te nanobelts as a protective layer holds great promise for enhancing the energy storage performance of zIBs,making them even more attractive as a viable energy storage solution forthefuture.

Background Hypoxic-ischemic brain injury （HIBI） after cardiopulmonary resuscitation is one of the most devastating neurological conditions that causing the impaired consciousness. However, there were few studies investigated the changes of brain metabolism in patients with vegetative state （VS） after post-resuscitated HIBI. This study aimed to analyze the change of overall brain metabolism and elucidated the brain area correlated with the level of consciousness （LOC） in patients with VS after post-resuscitated HIBI. Methods We consecutively enrolled 17 patients with VS after HIBI, who experienced cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Overall brain metabolism was measured by F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography （F-18 FDG PET） and we compared regional brain metabolic patterns from 17 patients with those from 15 normal controls using voxel-by-voxel based statistical parametric mapping analysis. Additionally, we correlated the LOC measured by the JFK-coma recovery scale-revised of each patient with brain metabolism by covariance analysis. Results Compared with normal controls, the patients with VS after post-resuscitated HIBI revealed significantly decreased brain metabolism in bilateral precuneus, bilateral posterior cingulate gyrus, bilateral middle frontal gyri, bilateral superior parietal gyri, bilateral middle occipital gyri, bilateral precentral gyri （PFEw correctecd 〈0.0001 ）, and increased brain metabolism in bilateral insula, bilateral cerebella, and the brainstem （PFEWcorrectecd 〈0.0001 ）. In covariance analysis, the LOC was significantly correlated with brain metabolism in bilateral fusiform and superior temporal gyri （P uncorrected 〈0.005）. Conclusions Our study demonstrated that the precuneus, the posterior cingulate area and the frontoparietal cortex, which is a component of neural correlate for consciousness, may be relevant structure for impaired consciousness in patient with VS after post-resuscitated HIBI. AIM: To identify the factors that differentiate acute hepatitis B(AHB) from chronic hepatitis B with acute exacerbation(CHB-AE).METHODS: From 2004 to 2013, a total of 82 patients(male n = 52, 63.4%; female n = 30, 36.6%) with clinical features of acute hepatitis with immunoglobulin M antibodies to the hepatitis B core antigen(Ig M antiHBc) were retrospectively enrolled and divided into two groups; AHB(n = 53) and CHB-AE(n = 29). The AHB group was defined as patients without a history of hepatitis B virus(HBV) infection before the episode and with loss of hepatitis B surface antigen within 6 mo after onset of acute hepatitis. Biochemical and virological profiles and the sample/cutoff(S/CO) ratio of Ig M anti-HBc were compared to determine the differential diagnostic ***: The multivariate analysis demonstrated that, the S/CO ratio of Ig M anti-HBc and HBV DNA levels were meaningful factors. The S/CO ratio of Ig M anti-HBc was significantly higher in the AHB group, while the HBV DNA level was significantly higher in the CHB-AE group. The optimal cutoff values of Ig M anti-HBc and HBV DNA levels for differentiating the two conditions were 8 S/CO ratio and 5.5 log10 IU/m L, respectively. The sensitivity and specificity were 96.2% and 89.7% for the S/CO ratio of Ig M anti-HBc and 81.1% and 72.4% for HBV DNA levels, respectively. The area under receiver operating characteristic curves of both the S/CO ratio of Ig M anti-HBc and HBV DNA levels were not significantly different(0.933 vs 0.844, P = 0.105). When combining Ig M anti-HBc and HBV DNA, the diagnostic power significantly improved compared to HBV DNA alone(P = 0.0056). The combination of these factors yielded a sensitivity and specificity of 98.1% and 86.2%, ***: The combination of the S/CO ratio of Ig M anti-HBc and HBV DNA levels was a useful tool for differentiating AHB from CHB-AE in patients with positive Ig M anti-HBc.

Few long-term follow-up studies have compared the changes in renal function according to the type of statin used in *** compared the long-term effects of statin intensity and type on the changes in the glomerular filtration rate(GFR).We extracted data of patients who took statin for the first *** analyzed whether or not different statins affect the changes in GFR at 3 months after baseline and 4 years *** included 3678 patients and analyzed the changes in *** GFR decreased by 3.2%±0.4%on average 4 years after the first statin prescription,indicating statistically significant deterioration(from 83.5±0.4 mL/min/1.73 m2 to 79.9±0.4 mL/min/1.73 m2,P<0.001).When comparing the GFR among different statins,significant differences were observed between atorvastatin and fluvastatin(−5.3%±0.7%vs.1.2%±2.2%,P<0.05)and between atorvastatin and simvastatin(−5.3%±0.7%vs.−0.7%±0.8%,P<0.05).In pitavastatin(odds ratio[OR]=0.64,95%confidence interval[CI]=0.46-0.87,P<0.005)and simvastatin(OR=0.69,95%CI=0.53-0.91,P<0.008),the GFR rate that decreased by<60 mL/min/1.73 m2 was significantly lower than that of *** long-term statin intake,GFR changed with the type of *** work is the first in Korea to compare each statin in terms of changes in the GFR after the statin prescription.
