Health behaviors of Korean adults with hepatitis B:Findings of the 2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey

AIM To assess the frequencies of five health-related behaviors(smoking, alcohol consumption, body weight, sleep dura-tion, and physical activity) in Korean adults with chronic hepatitis B.METHODS Data were obtained from the 2016 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In total, 5887 subjects(2568 males, 3319 females) over 19 years old were enrolled in this study. Interviews were performed to obtain information on demographic characteristics and medical conditions. A self-administered questionnaire and medical examination were used to assess the smoking history, alcohol use, physical activity, sleep duration, and body weight of the subjects. Chronic hepatitis B was diagnosed based on detection of hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag). The subjects were categorized into HBs Ag positive and negative groups, and a complex sampling analysis was conducted to compare the health behaviors between these groups.RESULTS Among males, the current smoking rate in the HBs Ag positive group was higher than that in the negative group(45.5% vs 38.5%). In the positive group, the rates of monthly and high-risk alcohol use were 70.4% and 17.6% in males and 45.9% and 3.8% in females, respectively. The rate of alcohol use was similar between the two groups [P = 0.455(males) and P = 0.476(females)]. In the HBs Ag positive group, 32.3% and 49.9% of males and 26.5% and 49.6% of females were overweight and physically inactive, respectively. High-risk alcohol consumption and physical inactivity were significantly associated with self-perceived health status.CONCLUSION Our data demonstrate that a large proportion of Korean adults with chronic hepatitis B have poor health behaviors. Further studies are needed to confirm our results.

Despite the safety,low cost,and high theoretical capacity(820 mA h g^(-1))of Zn metal anodes,the practical application of aqueous Zn metal batteries remains a critical challenge due to the Zn dendrite growth,corrosion,and hydrogen evolution reaction.Herein,we demonstrate the MXene ink hosting Zn metal anodes(MX@Zn)for high-performance and patternable Zn metal full batteries.The as-designed MX@Zn electrode is more facile and reversible than bare Zn and CC@Zn,as verified by better cyclic stability and lower overpotentials of symmetric cells with the plating capacity of 0.05 mA h cm^(-2)at 0.1 m A cm^(-2)and of 1 m A h cm^(-2)at 1 m A cm^(-2).The MX@Zn|MnO_(2)full cells deliver a high specific capacity of 281.9 m A h g^(-1),91.5%of the theoretical capacity,achieving 50%capacity retention from 60 mA g^(-1)to 300 mA g^(-1)and 79.7%of initial capacity after 200 cycles.Moreover,the patterned devices based on the MX@Zn electrode achieve high energy and power densities of 348.57 Wh kg^(-1)and 1556 W kg^(-1),respectively,along with a capacity retention of 64%and Coulombic efficiency of 99%over 500 cycles.The high performance of MX@Zn is attributed to the high electrical conductivity and hydrophilicity of MXene and rapid ion diffusion through the 3D interconnected porous channels.

Accelerated identification of equilibrium structures of multicomponent inorganic crystals using machine learning potentials

The discovery of multicomponent inorganic compounds can provide direct solutions to scientific and engineering challenges,yet the vast uncharted material space dwarfs synthesis throughput.While the crystal structure prediction(CSP)may mitigate this frustration,the exponential complexity of CSP and expensive density functional theory(DFT)calculations prohibit material exploration at scale.Herein,we introduce SPINNER,a structure-prediction framework based on random and evolutionary searches.Harnessing speed and accuracy of neural network potentials(NNPs),the program navigates configurational spaces 10^(2)–10^(3) times faster than DFT-based methods.Furthermore,SPINNER incorporates algorithms tuned for NNPs,achieving performances exceeding conventional algorithms.In blind tests on 60 ternary compositions,SPINNER identifies experimental(or theoretically more stable)phases for~80%of materials.When benchmarked against data-mining or DFT-based evolutionary predictions,SPINNER identifies more stable phases in many cases.By developing a reliable and fast structure-prediction framework,this work paves the way to large-scale,open exploration of undiscovered inorganic crystals.

Switching-on of serotonergic calcium signaling in activated hepatic stellate cells

AIM:To investigate serotonergic Ca 2+ signaling and the expression of 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT) receptors,as well as Ca 2+ transporting proteins,in hepatic stellate cells(HSCs) . METHODS:The intracellular Ca 2+ concentration([Ca 2+ ]i) of isolated rat HSCs was measured with a fluorescence microscopic imaging system.Quantitative PCR was per-formed to determine the transcriptional levels of 5-HT receptors and endoplasmic reticulum(ER) proteins involved in Ca 2+ storage and release in cultured rat HSCs. RESULTS:Distinct from quiescent cells,activated HSCs exhibited[Ca 2+ ]i transients following treatment with 5-HT,which was abolished by U-73122,a phospholipase C inhibitor.Upregulation of 5-HT2A and 5-HT2B receptors,but not 5-HT3,was prominent during trans-differentiation of HSCs.Pretreatment with ritanserin,a 5-HT2 antagonist,inhibited[Ca 2+ ]i changes upon application of 5-HT.Expression of type 1 inositol-5'-triphosphate receptor and type 2 sarcoplasmic/endoplasmic reticulum Ca 2+ ATPase were also increased during activation of HSCs and serve as the major isotypes for ER Ca 2+ storage and release in activated HSCs.Ca 2+ binding chaperone proteins of the ER,including calreticulin,calnexin and calsequestrin,were up-regulated following activation of HSCs. CONCLUSION:The appearance of 5-HT-induced[Ca 2+ ]i response accompanied by upregulation of metabotropic 5-HT2 receptors and Ca 2+ transporting/chaperone ER proteins may participate in the activating process of HSCs.

Do microRNA 96, 145 and 221 expressions really aid in Lhe prognosis of prostate carcinoma？

MicroRNAs （miRs） are small noncoding RNAs that have been reported to be premising diagnostic tools. We used quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR （RT-qPCR） to analyze differentially expressed miRNAs in prostate tumor samples to determine its prognostic value. From 2007 to 2009, tumor tissues were obtained from 73 radical prostatectomy specimens. Differentially expressed miR-96, -145 and -221 were validated by TaqMan RT-qPCR using all 73 tissues. The prognostic value was assessed in terms of biochemical recurrence using Kaplan-Meier and Cox regression analyses. For our patient cohort, the mean age was 64.7 years （50-76 years） and the mean prostate-specific antigen （PSA） was 7.5 ng m1-1. During the follow-up period （mean, 19.4 months）, 14 of 73 （19.2%） patients developed biochemical recurrence. Expression of miR-96, -145 and -221 correlated strongly with each other, but there were no correlations between miRNA expression and clinicopathologic parameters. Kaplan-Meier survival curves using the log-rank test showed a decreased biochemical recurrence-free interval with pathologic stage （P〈O.O01）. In addition, patients with Gleason scores over 8, compared with those with a Gleason score of 6, showed a decreased biochemical recurrence-free interval in Kaplan-Meier analysis （P=O.O01）. However, expression of miR-96, -145 and -221 did not correlate with the biochemical recurrence interval in Kaplan-Meier survival curves or by multivariate analysis using the Cox proportional hazard regression model, either. In conclusion, we did not observe a significant correlation between the expression of miR-96, -145 and -221 and clinicopathologic parameters. To utilize miRNA as a diagnostic tool in clinical practice, more research is needed to understand miRNA mechanisms, identify miRNA targets, and further characterize miRNA function.

Background： Water dropwort （Oenanthejavanica） as a popular traditional medicine in Asia shows various biological properties including antioxidant activity. In this study, we firstly examined the neuroprotective effect of Oenanthejavanica extract （OJE） in the hippocampal comus ammonis 1 region （CA 1 region） of the gerbil subjected to transient cerebral ischemia. Methods： Gerbils were established by the occlusion of common carotid arteries for 5 min. The neuroprotective effect of OJE was estimated by cresyl violet staining. In addition, 4 antioxidants （copper, zinc superoxide dismutase [SOD], manganese SOD, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase） immunoreactivities were investigated by immunohistochemistry. Results： Pyramidal neurons in the CA1 region showed neuronal death at 5 days postischemia; at this point in time, all antioxidants immunoreactivities disappeared in CA1 pyramidal neurons and showed 100 mg/kg, OJE protected CA 1 pyramidal neurons from ischemic damage in many nonpyramidal cells. Treatment with 200 mg/kg, not In addition, 200 mg/kg OJE treatment increased or maintained antioxidants immunoreactivities. Especially, among the antioxidants, glutathione peroxidase immunoreactivity was effectively increased in the CA 1 pyramidal neurons of the OJE-treated sham-operated and ischemia-operated groups. Conclusion： Our present results indicate that treatment with OJE can protect neurons from transient ischemic damage and that the neuroprotective effect may be closely associated with increased or maintained intracellular antioxidant enzymes by OJE.

Hydrogen storage in Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier(LOHC)systems is appealing for the safe storage and distribution of excess renewable energy via existing gasoline infrastructures to end-users.We present the eutectic mixture of biphenyl and diphenyl ether of its first use as a LOHC material.The material is hydrogenated with 99%selectivity without the cleavage of C–O bond,with commercial heterogeneous catalysts,which is confirmed by nuclear magnetic spectroscopy and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.Equilibrium concentration,dehydrogenation enthalpy,and thermo-neutral temperature are calculated using a density functional theory.The results indicate that O-atom-containing material exhibits more favorable dehydrogenation thermodynamics than that of the hydrocarbon analogue.The H2-rich material contains6.8 wt%of gravimetric hydrogen storage capacity.A preliminary study of catalytic dehydrogenation on a continuous reactor is presented to demonstrate a reversibility of this material.

Long-term administration of scopolamine interferes with nerve cell proliferation, differentiation and migration in adult mouse hippocampal dentate gyrus, but it does not induce cell death

Long-term administration of scopolamine, a muscarinic receptor antagonist, can inhibit the survival of newly generated cells, but its effect on the proliferation, differentiation and migration of nerve cells in the adult mouse hippocampal dentate gyrus remain poorly understood. In this study, we used immunohistochemistry and western blot methods to weekly detect the biological behaviors of nerve cells in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of adult mice that received intraperito- neal administration of scopolamine for 4 weeks. Expression of neuronal nuclear antigen （NeuN; a neuronal marker） and Fluoro-]ade B （a marker for the localization of neuronal degeneration） was also detected. After scopolamine treatment, mouse hippocampal neurons did not die, and Ki-67 （a marker for proliferating cells）-immunoreactive cells were reduced in number and reac hed the lowest level at 4 weeks. Doublecortin （DCX; a marker for newly generated neurons）-im- munoreactive cells were gradually shortened in length and reduced in number with time. After scopolamine treatment for 4 weeks, nearly all of the 5-bromo-2＇-deoxyuridine （BrdU）-labeled newly generated cells were located in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus, but they did not migrate into the granule cell layer. Few mature BrdU/NeuN double-labeled cells were seen in the subgranular zone of the dentate gyrus. These findings suggest that long-term administration of scopolamine interferes with the proliferation, differentiation and migration of nerve cells in the adult mouse hippocampal dentate gyrus, but it does not induce cell death.

Bio-inspired untethered fully soft robots in liquid actuated by induced energy gradients

Soft robotics with new designs, fabrication technologies and control strategies inspired by nature have been totally changing our view on robotics.To fully exploit their potential in practical applications, untethered designs are preferred in implementation.However, hindered by the limited thermal/mechanical performance of soft materials, it has been always challenging for researchers to implement untethered solutions, which generally involve rigid forms of high energy-density power sources or high energy-density processes.A number of insects in nature, such as rove beetles, can gain a burst of kinetic energy from the induced surface-energy gradient on water to return to their familiar habitats, which is generally known as Marangoni propulsion.Inspired by such a behavior, we report the agile untethered mobility of a fully soft robot in liquid based on induced energy gradients and also develop corresponding fabrication and maneuvering strategies.The robot can reach a speed of 5.5 body lengths per second, which is 7-fold more than the best reported, 0.69(body length per second), in the previous work on untethered soft robots in liquid by far.Further controlling the robots, we demonstrate a soft-robot swarm that can approach a target simultaneously to assure a hit with high accuracy.Without employing any high energy-density power sources or processes, our robot exhibits many attractive merits, such as quietness, no mechanical wear, no thermal fatigue, invisibility and ease of robot fabrication, which may potentially impact many fields in the future.

Clinical characteristics of asymptomatic Terson syndrome in the patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage

●AIM:To investigate clinical characteristics of asymptomatic Terson syndrome and its clinical impact in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage(SAH).●METHODS:This retrospective,interventional study included 31 patients with aneurysmal SAH,and the medical records were reviewed.In addition to baseline characteristics of the study population such as age,sex,and underlying medical history,multi-modal imaging analysis,including fluorescein angiography(FA),spectral domain optical coherence tomography(SD-OCT),were also reviewed.Glasgow Coma Scale(GCS),Hunt-Hess(HH)grade,and Fisher scale at the time of admission,and functional outcome by using modified Rankin Scale(mRS)at 6 mo were compared.●RESULTS:Of the 31 patients,10 patients(32.3%)were diagnosed with Terson syndrome.All the patients with Terson syndrome did not report visual symptoms at the time of ophthalmologic screening.FA showed microvascular changes of retinal capillaries and varying degrees of disc leakage.SD-OCT allowed intuitive anatomical localization of multi-layered retinal hemorrhages and assessment of ellipsoid zone integrity.The patients with Terson syndrome showed significantly worse GCS(P=0.047)and HH grade(P=0.025)than those without,except Ficher scale(P=0.385).There was no significant difference in the mRS(P=0.250)at 6 mo.Among baseline factors,the HH grade was the only significant factor associated with Terson syndrome(B=1.079,P=0.016).●CONCLUSION:In our study,32.3%of the patients have Terson syndrome without visual symptoms.The baseline HH grade is significantly correlated with Terson syndrome,and there is no significant difference in the functional outcome between the patients with and without Terson syndrome.Terson syndrome may develop without any visual symptoms as shown in our study,and ophthalmologic screening may be recommended to prevent further visual deterioration especially in the patients with poor HH grade at the time of aneurysmal SAH.
