Factors affecting length of stay according to bronchopulmonary dysplasia severity:a nationwide cohort study in Korea

Background Longer hospitalizations for preterm infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia(BPD)delay developmental outcomes,increase the risk for hospital-acquired complications,and exert a substantial socioeconomic *** study aimed to identify factors associated with an extended length of stay(LOS)at different levels of severity of *** A cohort study was conducted using the Korean Neonatal Network registry of very low birth weight infants with BPD between 2013 and 2017 through retrospective *** A total of 4263 infants were diagnosed with *** mild BPD,infants requiring surgical treatment for patent ductus arteriosus needed a longer LOS[eadjustedβcoefficients(adjβ)1.041;95%confidence interval(CI):0.01–0.08]and hydrocephalus(eadjβ1.094;95%CI 0.01–0.17).In moderate BPD,infants administered steroids or with intraventricular hemorrhage required a longer LOS(eadjβ1.041;95%CI 0.00–0.07 and eadjβ1.271;95%CI 0.11–0.38,respectively).In severe BPD,infants with comorbidities required a longer LOS:pulmonary hypertension(eadjβ1.174;95%CI 0.09–0.23),administrated steroid for BPD(eadjβ1.116;95%CI 0.07–0.14),sepsis(eadjβ1.062;95%CI 0.01–0.11),patent ductus arteriosus requiring surgical ligation(eadjβ1.041;95%CI 0.00–0.08),and intraventricular hemorrhage(eadjβ1.016;95%CI 0.05–0.26).Additionally,the higher the clinical risk index score,the longer the LOS needed for infants in all *** The factors affecting LOS differed according to the severity of *** approaches to reducing LOS may be devised using knowledge of the various risk factors affecting LOS by BPD severity.

Evaluation of the safety of hair essence containing 0.05% purified bee venom on the skin and eyes of rabbits

Efficacy of early treatment with infliximab in pediatric Crohn’s disease

AIM: To investigate the effectiveness of early infliximab use for induction and maintenance therapy in pediatric Crohn’s disease. METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of 36 patients with Crohn’s disease. Ten patients (group A) were treated with mesalamine after induction therapy with oral prednisolone, and 13 patients (group B) were treated with azathioprine after induction therapy with oral prednisolone. Thirteen patients (group C) received infliximab and azathioprine for induction and maintenance therapy for the first year, and were treated with azathioprine after 1 year. All patients were followed for at least 24 mo. Efficacy was determined by the relapse rate using the pediatric Crohn’s disease activity index score in each group at 12 and 24 mo. RESULTS: At the 1 year follow-up, the relapse ratee, mi Jin Kim, Hae Jeong lee, Yon Ho Choe (23.1%, 3 of 13 patients) in group C was lower than that (61.5%, 8 of 13 patients) in group B (P = 0.047). At the 2 years follow-up, the relapse rate (38.5%, 5 of 13 patients) in group C was lower than that (76.9%, 10 of 13 patients) in group B (P = 0.047). Adverse events in group C were fewer than in groups A and B. CONCLUSION: Early induction with infliximab at diagnosis, known as "top-down" therapy, was effective for reducing the relapse rate compared to conventional therapies for at least 2 years.

Insulinotrophic and hypolipidemic effects of Ecklonia cava in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice

Objective:To explore the anti-diabetic activity of Ecklonia cava(EC) in streptozotocin(STZ)-induced diabetic ***:Diabetes was induced by a single intraperitoneal injection of STZ(90 mg/kg).Normal and diabetic mice were treated with 0%,3%,and 5%EC diet for 4 weeks. Serum glucose and insulin concentrations,serum lipid profile,oral glucose tolerance test,and liver and pancreaticβ-cell histopathological observations were *** addition,in vitro glucose-induced insulin secretion was determined using pancreaticβ-islet ***:EC supplementation significantly and dose-dependently decreased serum glucose concentration, and improved glucose homeostasis in diabetic mice by preventing loss ofβ-cell mass resulting in increase of insulin *** triglyceride and total cholesterol concentrations in the serum and liver were markedly reduced by EC treatment in STZ-diabetic ***,LDL-,and HDL-cholesterol levels were ameliorated in EC supplemented diabetic *** steatosis induced by STZ was ameliorated by EC ***,in vitro insulinotrophic effect of EC extract was observed in pancreaticβ-***:This study demonstrated that EC is a potent and efficacious hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic agent,and prevents the loss ofβ-cell mass resulting in increase of insulin secretary capacity.

Oxidative hair dyes containingρ-phenylenediamine(PPD)are reported to induce an allergic reaction by promoting oxidative stress when absorbed through the *** the associated risk,these hair dyes remain popular owing to their convenience and sharpness of *** makes it important to minimize the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by PPD-containing hair *** cava extract has been evaluated in different studies for its protective effects against external stress in fibroblasts and *** study was aimed at using in-vitro and in-vivo models to investigate the extract’s effects on cytotoxicity of and oxidative stress induced by PPD-containing hair *** of CIEL*a*b*Color space was first used to determine the range of *** extract that would not interfere with the coloring ability of the dye upon ***,the set ranges of *** extract(5% and 7%)were added to the hair dye and their toxicity assessed by evaluating the viability of fibroblasts and *** effects on developmental phenotypes and induction of oxidative stress by hair dye were evaluated and compared with those of hair dyes containing different contents of *** extract using an in-vivo zebrafish *** results showed that *** extract in hair dye could significantly decrease the cytotoxicity and levels of oxidative stress caused by hair dyes containing PPD in both in-vitro and in-vivo *** results suggest that the addition of 7% *** extract to 250μg/mL hair dye does not interfere with the coloring ability of the dye while showing significant protective eff ects against the hair *** study proposes that the use of *** extract as an adduct to hair dyes containing PPD reduces the cytotoxicity and oxidative stress induced by these hair dyes.

Effect of the semen extract of Cuscuta chinensis on inflammatory responses in LPS-stimulated BV-2 microglia

AIM: To investigate the anti-inflammatory activities of the semen extract of Cuscuta chinensis Lam.(Cuscutae Semen; CS) on the production of inflammatory mediators, nitric oxide(NO), prostaglandin 2(PGE2), and proinflammatory cytokines in lipopolysaccharide(LPS)-stimulated BV-2 microglia. METHOD: BV-2 cells were treated with CS extract for 30 min, and then stimulated with LPS or without for 24 h. The levels of NO, PGE2 and proinflammatory cytokines were measured by Griess assay and ELISA. The expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase(iNOS), and cyclooxygenase(COX)-2 mRNA and protein was determined by RT-PCR and Western blot, respectively. The phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1/2(ERK1/2), Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK), and p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase(MAPK), and the nuclear expression of nuclear factor(NF)-κB p65 were investigated by Western blot analysis. RESULTS: CS extract significantly decreased the production of NO and PGE2 by suppressing the expression of iNOS and COX-2 in activated microglia. CS extract decreased the production of TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6 by down-regulating their transcription levels. In addition, CS extract suppressed the phosphorylation of ERK1/2, JNK, and p38 MAPK, and the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 in activated microglia. CONCLUSION: These results indicate that CS extract is capable of suppressing the inflammatory response by microglia activation, suggesting that CS extract has potential in the treatment of brain inflammation.
