Kale Juice Improves Coronary Artery Disease Risk Factors in Hypercholesterolemic Men

Objective To evaluate the effect of 3-month kale （Brassica oleracea acephala） juice supplementation on coronary artery disease risk factors among hypercholesterolemic men. Methods Thirty-two men with hypercholesterolemia （〉 200 mg/dL） were recruited after annual health examinations among the faculty and staff at university. The subjects consumed 150 mL of kale juice per day for a 12-week intervention period. Dietary and anthropometric assessments were performed and blood samples were collected to evaluate biochemical profiles before and after supplementation. Results Serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, and HDL- to LDL-cholesterol ratio were significantly increased by 27% （P〈0.0001） and 52% （P〈0.0001）, respectively. The LDL-cholesterol concentration and the atherogenic index were significantly reduced by 10% （P=0.0007） and 24.2% （P〈0.0001）, respectively without affecting body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, or nutrient intakes after three months of supplementation. While there was no difference in the concentration of malondialdehyde, significant increase in glutathione peroxidase activity （P=0.0005） were accompanied by a significant increase in the serum selenium level （P=0.0132）. It was also found that the responses of these risk factors to kale juice administration were dependent on smoking status. Conclusion Regular meals supplementation with kale juice can favorably influence serum lipid profiles and antioxidant systems, and hence contribute to reduce the risks of coronary artery disease in male subjects with hyperlipidemia.

Supersonic Cavity Based Combustion with Kerosene/Hydrogen Fuel

A comparative study with kerosene and hydrogen fuel in a model scramjet combustor has been carried out nu- merically. The effect of fuel-air equivalence ratio on the flow field properties in a cavity based mixing mechanism at a freestream Math number of 2.08 has been probed. The investigation has been carried out in a two dimension- al numerical model where a cavity of length to depth ratio of 2 is mounted on one of the walls of the flow channel The flow field shock structure is observed to change with the change in fuel-air equivalence ratio. Total pressure loss is observed to depend both on fuel air equivalence ratio and the fuel type. The spread of fuel in the test sec- tion shows marked variation with the equivalence ratio. Performance of injector location on the fuel-air mixing is also probed during the course of the investigation.

Polysaccharide-based magnetically responsive polyelectrolyte hydrogels for tissue engineering applications

Polysaccharide-based bionanocomposite hydrogels with functional nanomaterials were used in biomed- ical applications. Self-organization of xanthan gum and chitosan in the presence of iron oxide magnetic nanoparticles （Fe304 MNPs） allowed us to form magnetically responsive polyelectrolyte complex hydro- gels （MPECHs） via insitu ionic complexation using D-（＋）-glucuronic acid ^-lactone as a green acidifying agent. Characterization confirmed the successful formation of （and structural interactions within） the MPECH and good porous structure. The rheological behavior and compressive properties of the PECH and MPECH were measured. The results indicated that the incorporation of Fe304 MNPs into the PECH greatly improved mechanical properties and storage modulus （G＇）. In vitro cell culture of NIH3T3 fibroblasts on MPECHs showed improvements in cell proliferation and adhesion in an external magnetic field relative to the pristine PECH. The results showed that the newly developed MPECH could potentially be used as a magnetically stimulated system in tissue engineering applications.

Expression of prothymosin α predicts early recurrence and poor prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma

BACKGROUND：Prothymosinα（PTMA）is a nuclear oncoprotein-transcription factor essential for cell cycle progression and *** was overexpressed in several human malignancies including hepatocellular carcinoma（HCC）.However,the prognostic significance of PTMA protein expression in HCC remains *** the present study,we evaluated PTMA protein expression by immunohistochemistry in order to elucidate the prognostic roles of PTMA in HCC ***： By immunohistochemistry, we investigated the expression of PTMA protein in tumor tissue from 226 HCC patients who underwent curative hepatectomy. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to evaluate its predic- tive value for tumor recurrence and survival of patients. The median follow-up period was 120 months. RESULTS： PTMA expression was observed in 162 （71.7%） of the 226 HCC patients and was significantly associated with higher Edmondson grade, microvascular invasion, intrahe- patic metastasis, higher American Joint Committee on Cancer （AJCC） T-stage, and lower albumin level. PTMA expression was an independent predictor of early recurrence （P=0.001）. PTMA expression showed an unfavorable influence on recurrence- free survival （RFS）（P〈0.001）. Subgroup analysis showed that among patients with tumor size _〈5.0 cm （140 patients）, patients at AJCC T-stage I （95 patients） and patients with a-fetoprotein ≤20 ng/mL （83 patients）, the differences in RFS between PTMA- positive and PTMA-negative groups were also statistically sig- nificant （P=0.017, P=0.002 and P=0.002, respectively）. In addi- tion, PTMA expression was an independent predictor of shorter RFS （P=0.011）. PTMA expression showed an unfavorable influ- ence on overall survival （P=0.014）, but was not an independent predictor of shorter overall survival （P=0.161）. CONCLUSIONS： PTMA protein expression might be a novel predictor of early recurrence and RFS in HCC patients, even those at early stage or with a-fetoprotein-negative after curative hep

Effect of hydro co-extrusion on microstructure of duo-cast Al3003/Al4004 clad materials

The effects of hydro co-extrusion on the microstructure changes of aluminum hybrid duo-cast Al 3003/Al 4004 clad materials were studied. The specimen of duo-cast Al 3003/Al 4004 clad materials was in circle shape, and was composed of Al 3003(outside) and Al 4004(inside) materials. The specimen was extruded by the hydro co-extrusion equipment. The manufacturing conditions of the specimen were 423 K in temperature and 5 in extrusion ratio. The dimensions of the specimen were 80 mm in diameter of the Al 4004 material and 35 mm in thickness of the Al 3003 material before the hydro co-extrusion process, and 30 mm in diameter and about 5 mm in thickness after the extrusion process, respectively. The microstructure and the hardness for two specimens were investigated. The hardness value of cross section in the duo-cast Al 3003/Al 4004 clad materials before the extrusion process was increased in form of the parabola toward the center. However, after the extrusion process, it was almost constant in the portion of Al 4004 material. Lots of big voids above 1 mm in diameter in the specimen existed in the interfacing region of Al 3003 and Al 4004 materials before the extrusion process. These big voids disappeared after the process of hydro co-extrusion.

Stud welding for fixation of cryogenic insulation of membrane tanks in LNG ship building

The support plates including all of the inner hulls such as E grade steel, weld seams and SUS304L were considered to establish the optimal stud welding condition in LNG ship building. The stainless steel plate was especially applied to the bracket on the liquid dome. The polished and etched surfaces of the welded stud and support plate were examined if the bead was properly formed. With the micrographic examination, the fusion boundary of metal weld zone formed by stud welding was analyzed to optimize the welding parameters. And also the analysis of the unacceptable welding faults such as cold and hot weld were performed. The mechanical tests such as tensile tests and bending tests were carried out to reveal any abnormal variation in the relationship of process parameters and the strength.

Generation of mesenchymal stem-like cells for producing extracellular vesicles

Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent progenitor cells with therapeutic potential against autoimmune diseases, inflammation, ischemia, and metabolic disorders. Contrary to the previous conceptions, recent studies have revealed that the tissue repair and immunomodulatory functions of MSCs are largely attributed to their secretome, rather than their potential to differentiate into desired cell types. The composition of MSC secretome encompasses cytokines and growth factors, in addition to the cell-derived structures known as extracellular vesicles (EVs). EVs are membrane-enclosed nanoparticles that are capable of delivering biomolecules, and it is now believed that MSC-derived EVs are the major players that induce biological changes in the target tissues. Based on these EVs’ characteristics, the potential of EVs derived from MSC (MSC-EV) in terms of tissue regeneration and immune modulation has grown during the last decade. However, the use of MSCs for producing sufficient amount of EVs has not been satisfactory due to limitations in the cell growth and large variations among the donor cell types. In this regard, pluripotent stem cells (PSCs)-derived MSC-like cells, which can be robustly induced and expanded in vitro, have emerged as more accessible cell source that can overcome current limitations of using MSCs for EV production. In this review, we have highlighted the methods of generating MSC-like cells from PSCs and their therapeutic outcome in preclinical studies. Finally, we have also discussed future requirements for making this cell-free therapy clinically feasible.

Analytical evaluation and experimental validation on dynamic rocking behavior for shallow foundation considering structural response

The challenge in the practical application of rocking foundations is the estimation of its performance,particularly the rotation angle,during a strong *** this study,the dynamic rocking behavior for a shallow foundation considering structural response was evaluated through two analytical approaches:the conventional soil-foundation-structure interaction(SFSI)governing equation of a single-degree-of-freedom(SDOF)structure on a rocking shallow foundation,and the Housner rocking model(i.e.,a rocking rigid block on a rigid base).Both approaches were validated with dynamic centrifuge *** test models consisted of a soft soil deposit,a shallow rectangular foundation,and an SDOF structure dominated by a bending behavior.A total of 11 foundation-structure systems and six seismic waves,including recorded earthquake signals and sinusoidal waves,were *** results showed that the conventional SFSI equation well predicted the maximum rotation during strong ***,this method was less accurate regarding the rotational phase information and maximum rotation of the foundation during weak *** the other hand,although the modified Housner′s rocking model required five parameters relevant to a soil-foundation-structure system,it overestimated the maximum rotation of the foundation when compared with the results from dynamic centrifuge tests.

Pancreatic parenchymal injection of ethanol and octreotide to induce focal pancreatic fibrosis in rats: Strategies to eliminate postoperative pancreatic fistula

Background: Postoperative pancreatic fistula(POPF) is more likely to occur in a soft pancreas compared to a hard pancreas in which fibrosis has progressed. There is almost no leakage at the anastomosis site or cut surface of a hard pancreas. The aim of this study was to induce localized fibrosis at the cut surface of the pancreas in a rat ***: Thirty-six rats were divided into three groups(group S: normal saline group; group E: ethanol group; and group O: octreotide group). Each rat was directly injected with a particular compound at the duodenal lobe of the pancreatic parenchyma. Each group was divided into three subgroups according to the time of post-injection sacrifice(1, 2, or 4 weeks). The hardness, suture holding capacity(SHC), and histological fibrosis grade of each pancreas were ***: The hardness, SHC, and fibrosis grade of groups E and O were increased at week 1, with greater increases in group E(all P < 0.001). In a subgroup comparison, the hardness, SHC, and fibrosis grade of group E tended to decrease gradually over time, with no regular pattern evident in group O. A comparison between the injected site(duodenal lobe) and non-injected site(splenic lobe) of the pancreas revealed increases in the three parameters of group E only in the duodenal lobe, with increases in group O at both the duodenal and splenic ***: Parenchymal injection of ethanol and octreotide increased pancreatic fibrosis. Unlike octreotide, ethanol provoked localized fibrosis that was maintained over time. It is expected that ethanol injection could eliminate POPF during pancreatic surgery.
