Usage of fresh medicinal plants and users′perceptions in Singapore

OBJECTIVE To gather information regarding the usage of fresh medicinal plants and users′perceptions via face-to-face *** date,there is no published report of firsthand account of their usage in *** important information may be permanently lost if not properly collated in *** Information on demographic data,plant-use methods and perception of usage was *** were recruited via the local newspapers,by word of mouth *** survey protocol was approved by the NUS Institutional Review *** plant samples/photographs were obtained from the users and voucher specimens were *** Two hundredusers who have used a total of 103 species of fresh medicinal plants anytime in the last 5years participated in the *** five most commonly used plants were Clinacanthusnutans(34 users),Strobilanthescrispus(31 users),Pereskiableo(25 users),Aloe vera(18 users),and Zingiberofficinale(16 users).The top 3 most commonly cited medical conditions were diseases of respiratory system(50 users),neoplasm(29 users)anddiseases of circulatory system(20 users).A total of 173 users(86.5%)did not consult any healthcare professional for advice about plant usage,and only one user consulted the *** of the common reasons given for using fresh medicinal plants were recommendation by others(150,75.0%),efficacy(137,68.5%),and safety(117,58.5%).Most users(170,85.0%)were satisfied or highly satisfied with the outcome of plants *** Two hundred users of fresh medicinal plants have been successfully interviewed and the information documented systematically in a *** results suggest that fresh medicinal plants have a role to play in healthcare in modern *** information collated will serve as a useful resource for identifying promising plants for future drug discovery efforts.

Gastric peritoneal carcinomatosis-a retrospective review

AIM To characterize patients with gastric peritoneal carcinomatosis(PC) and their typical clinical and treatment course with palliative systemic chemotherapy as the current standard of *** We performed a retrospective electronic chart review of all patients with gastric adenocarcinoma with PC diagnosed at initial metastatic presentation between January 2010 and December 2014 in a single tertiary referral *** We studied a total of 271 patients with a median age of 63.8 years and median follow-up duration of 5.1 mo. The majority(n = 217, 80.1%) had the peritoneum as the only site of metastasis at initial presentation. Palliative systemic chemotherapy was eventually planned for 175(64.6%) of our patients at initial presentation, of which 171 were initiated on it. Choice of first-line regime was in accordance with the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines for Gastric Cancer Treatment. Thesepatients underwent a median of one line of chemotherapy, completing a median of six cycles in total. Chemotherapy disruption due to unplanned hospitalizations occurred in 114(66.7%), while cessation of chemotherapy occurred in 157(91.8%), with 42 cessations primarily attributable to PC-related complications. Patients who had initiation of systemic chemotherapy had a significantly better median overall survival than those who did not(10.9 mo vs 1.6 mo, P < 0.001). Of patients who had initiation of systemic chemotherapy, those who experienced any disruptions to chemotherapy due to unplanned hospitalizations had a significantly worse median overall survival compared to those who did not(8.7 mo vs 14.6 mo, P < 0.001).CONCLUSION Gastric PC carries a grim prognosis with a clinical course fraught with disease-related complications which may attenuate any survival benefit which palliative systemic chemotherapy may have to offer. As such, investigational use of regional therapies is warranted and required validation in patients with isolated PC to maximize their

With the advent of rapid automated in silico identification of biosynthetic gene clusters(BGCs),genomics pre-sents vast opportunities to accelerate natural product(NP)***,prolific NP producers,Strepto-myces,are exceptionally GC-rich(>80%)and highly repetitive within *** pose challenges in sequencing and high-quality genome assembly which are currently circumvented via intensive ***,we outline a more cost-effective workflow using multiplex Illumina and Oxford Nanopore sequencing with hybrid long-short read assembly algorithms to generate high quality *** protocol involves subjecting long read-derived assemblies to up to 4 rounds of polishing with short reads to yield accurate BGC *** successfully sequenced and assembled 8 GC-rich Streptomyces genomes whose lengths range from 7.1 to 12.1 Mb with a median N50 of 8.2 *** analysis revealed previous misrepresentation among these strains and allowed us to propose a potentially new species,Streptomyces *** comprehensive characterization of their biosynthetic,pan-genomic and antibiotic resistance features especially for molecules derived from type I polyketide synthase(PKS)BGCs reflected their potential as alternative NP ***,the genome assemblies and insights presented here are envisioned to serve as gateway for the scientific community to expand their avenues in NP discovery.

到底什么概念让新加坡人的文化长期以来困扰着这个城市和国家。新加坡自1965年独立以来,该国的政府已经开始实行“文化认同”。在独立后的首十个年头,备受重视的就是推广经济发展,其中如西方个人主义也随之深受重视。但是当有关当局发现社会上的物质主义变得猖獗之后,这备受关注的现象导致该趋势于1980年代初期开始出现转变。该国政府随后寻求了一个全新的文化认同准则,那就是转向新加坡大多数人口的文化根源,即华裔族群。随后多种有关华人的概念被推广,譬如采用儒家价值观,同时于1979年推介了“讲华语”运动。接着也推介了该国的双语教育政策,要求学生在学习英文的同时,也要学习母语,以便灌输族群归属感予新加坡社会。然而,来自新加坡的华人及其他族群选择以本身的概念开发文化认同,并要求参于谈判如何符合新加坡公民的真正意义。反对人士对国家身份认同的概念,透过另类媒体大肆散播,尤其是通过部落格。这研究希望能够进一步让这些部落格揭穿政府联合华人及重新确定新加坡多元种族文化认同的事实。在新加坡有关身份认同的前学术文章忽视了媒体在谈判身份认同过程中扮演的重要角色。为了填补这一空白,以深入详尽的质性研究使用批判论述分析(CDA)来审核文章,并通过两个新闻提倡部落格,淡马锡评论(Temasek Review)及网上公民(The Online Citizen)张贴评论。在这些帖子中使用的谨慎言语透露潜在的部落格被当作是新加坡人宣泄对国家主导的文化管理不满的论域空间,以及给先进时代创建全新的身份认同。
