Objectives: The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of the anti-angiotensinic drug, ramipril and irbesartan on the vascular protection of kidneys of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (DR). Methods: 110 male albino rats were divided into 7 main groups. Group-1 (10 normal control rats;NC). Group-2 (10 rats) was injected intra-peritoneally with STZ (Diabetic Rats;DR). Group-3 (10 DR) is controlled by insulin. Groups 4 to 7 (20 DR), each is subdivided into two subgroups that received either low or high dose of ramipril or irbesartan with or without insulin. Two months post treatment, rat-tail blood was collected to measure: Fasting blood sugar, hbA1c, total serum proteins, albumin and lipid profiles. Urine was collected to measure albuminuria. Kidneys were isolated for histopathological study. Results: Biochemically, both ramipril and irbesartan (without insulin) lowered albumin concentration in urine samples especially at high doses. histopathologically, there is no beneficial response of both drugs without insulin. Combination of insulin together with either drug has beneficial effects biochemically and histopathologically at high doses. Low dose irbesartan only has renoprotective effect in DR treated with insulin. The other biochemical parameters showed negligible response to both drugs. Conclusion: Low dose irbesartan and high doses of both drugs have renoprotective effect in DR treated with insulin.

AIM: To analyze the level of apoptosis in different mucosal compartments and the differential expression of Fas/Fas-ligand and perforin in h pylori-associated gastric ulcer. METhODS: Antral specimens from patients with h pylori-related active gastric ulcer (GU), h pylori-related gastritis, and non-infected controls were analysed for densities and distribution of apoptotic cells determined by the TdT-mediated dUDP-biotin nick-end-labelling method. GU patients were submitted to eradication therapy with follow-up biopsy after 60 d. Fas, FasL, and perforin-expressing cells were assessed by immunoper- oxidase, and with anti-CD3, anti-CD20 and anti-CD68 by double immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy. Quantitative analysis was performed using a computer- assisted image analyser. RESULTS: h pylori-infected antrum showed greater surface epithelial apoptosis which decreased after eradi- cation therapy. In the lamina propria, higher rates of mononuclear cell apoptosis were observed in h pylori- gastritis. Co-expression of Fas with T-cell and macro- phage markers was reduced in GU. FasL- and perforin-expressing cells were increased in h pylori-infection and correlated with epithelial apoptosis. Perforin-expressing cells were also increased in GU compared with h pylori- gastritis. CONCLUSION: Epithelial apoptosis is increased in h pylori-infection and correlates to FasL- and perforin- expression by T cells. Expression of perforin is correlated with the tissue damage, and may represent the enhance- ment of a distinct cytotoxic pathway in GU. Increased expression of FasL not paralleled by Fas on T-cells and macrophages may indicate a reduced susceptibility to the Fas/FasL-mediated apoptosis of lymphoid cells in h pylori-infection.

Background: In developing countries maternal mortality and morbidity are most often due to the late to consult, poverty and ignorance. Added to this is, the under-medicalization of the health system. The objective of study is to report a case of late consultation and its consequences and make recommendations to improve: case of abdominal pregnancy with hemorrhagic placenta at the health and Mother Center (CSME) in Zinder/Niger. Clinical Observation: We describe a case of abdominal pregnancy with hemorrhagic placenta in a 24-year-old woman, without profession, resident in the city of Zinder with a low economic level, consulted for abdomino-pelvic pain. She had a notion of amenorrhea for 5 months without any consultation made. She was pale, feverish and had abdominal pain. Ultrasound revealed a 23-week-old fetus and an empty uterus. The diagnosis was abdominal pregnancy. A laparotomy was performed and a The morbidity was hysterectomy and anemia. The postoperative period course was complicated with anemia. The patient was cured on the 9th day with a good vital prognosis. Conclusion: Abdominal pregnancy occurred in a patient who presented a risk factor. Ultrasound was the key diagnostic test. Surgery was the treatment of choice and the prognosis depends on the earliness of the consultation. Community awareness and early consultation with health services can improve the prognosis of abdominal pregnancy.

Therapeutic and prophylactic thalidomide in TNBS-induced colitis: Synergistic effects on TNF-α, IL-12 and VEGF production

AIM： To evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic effect of thalidomide on 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid （TNBS）-induced colitis. Thalidomide has been reported to downregulate the expression of tumor necrosis factor α （TNF-α）, IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor （VEGF）, hallmarks of intestinal inflammation in Crohn＇s disease （CD）. METhODS： Male Wistar rats were divided in five groups of ten animals each. Four groups received a rectal infusion of TNBS in ethanol. The first group was sacrificed 7 d after colitis induction. The second and third groups received either thalidomide or placebo by gavage and were sacrificed at 14 d. The fourth group received thalidomide 6 h before TNBS administration, and was sacrificed 7 d after induction. The fifth group acted as the control group and colitis was not induced. histological inflammatory scores of the colon were performed and lamina propria CD4＋ T cells, macrophages, and VEGF＋ cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. TNF-α and IL-12 were quantified in the supernatant of organ cultures by ELISA. RESULTS： Significant reduction in the inflammatory score and in the percentage of VEGF＋ cells was observed in the group treated with thalidomide compared with animals not treated with thalidomide. Both TNF-α and IL-12 levels were significantly reduced among TNBS induced colitis animals treated with thalidomide compared with animals that did not receive thalidomide. TNF-α levels were also significantly reduced among the animals receiving thalidomide prophylaxis compared with untreated animals with TNBS-induced colitis. Intestinal levels of TNF-α and IL-12 were significantly correlated with the inflammatory score and the number of VEGF＋ cells. CONCLUSION： Thalidomide significantly attenuates TNBS-induced colitis by inhibiting the intestinal production of TNF-α, IL-12, and VEGF. This effect may support the use of thalidomide as an alternate approach in selected patients with CD.

The study was conducted with the main objective to evaluate the genetic variability, heritability, and clustering pattern exploration of morphological and yield related traits in potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) collections in the bimodal rainfall agroecological zone of Cameroon using a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with three replications. The data obtained on morphological and yield traits were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the viability rate of the collections varied from 77.78% to 96.55% respectively for the Maffo and Desiree collections, while the greatest number of tubers per plant varied from 4 to 18 respectively for Synergie and Desiree. The emergence rate varies from 60% to 1.66% respectively for Maffo et Doza collections. however, Desiree presents the highest TL (96.55) while Maffo shows the lowest value (77.78%). The yield per hectare varied from 1.14 to 9.3 t/h for Maffo and Doza respectively. For all the characteristics observed, Phenotypic Coefficients of Variation (PCV) were higher than Genotypic Coefficients of Variation (GCV) suggesting the role of environment in the expression of traits under observation. The highest GCV and PCV 47.55 and 58.94 respectively were observed for Diameter at the collar (DC). Most of the traits showed high GAM (>20%)) except Average Tuber Length (ATL) with a moderate value (19.8). In terms of vegetative development, the Desiree variety showed the highest performance. Based on the growth and yield results, Doza seems to be the most recommendable crop in the study area.

Risk Factors Contributing to Microbiological Contamination of Boreholes and hand Dug Wells Water in the Vina Division, Adamawa, Cameroon

This study examined the sanitary conditions of public boreholes and hand dug wells water in relation to pathogenic bacteria isolated in water samples. To assess the suitability of drinking water, sanitary inspection of surroundings of the sources was conducted, membrane filtration technic was used to trap the microorganisms in the water sample and other standard microbiological technics were applied to check the heterotrophic plate counts, total coliforms, fecal coliforms and some pathogenic bacteria in the samples. It was observed that there were no delineated protection zones around many boreholes (61.19%) and in almost all hand dug wells;thus, hand dug wells were pruned to more contamination than boreholes. heterotrophic plate counts of boreholes were significantly different between (p he two seasons both in boreholes and hand dug wells. Fecal coliforms were significantly absent in some boreholes, but significantly present in all hand dug wells with the presence of E. coli 157h in some. Risk assessment of factors contributing to water contamination showed that: pumps manipulation with feet, other sources of contamination such as wastewater dumps, within 10m were significantly associated to boreholes contamination with Salmonella spp, Staphylococcus aureuse, fecal coliform (p = 0.01);in hand dug wells, presence of latrine or septic tank soak-away within 10 m of the wells, poor depth and lack of internal lining, uncapped wells, presence of trees near the wells, animal and birds feces, were significant and associated to contamination with Salmonela spp., B. cepaceae, S. aureus E. coli 1 (p h very poor sanitary conditions and this situation may not change unless the contaminating risk factors are fixed and sanitary measures are taken.

Objectives: To analyse clinical, echocardiographic, and prognostic characteristics of Staphylococcus aureus infective endocarditis(IE) compared with endocarditis caused by other pathogens. Design: Cohort study. Methods: 194 consecutive patients with definite IE according to the Duke criteria prospectively examined by transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography were enrolled. Patients without identified microorganisms were excluded. The S aureus IE group(n=61) was compared with the group with IE caused by other pathogens(n=133). Results: Compared with IE caused by other pathogens, S aureus IE was characterised by severe comorbidity, a shorter duration of symptoms before diagnosis, and a higher prevalence of right sided IE, cutaneous portal of entry, and history of renal failure. Severe sepsis, major neurological events, and multiple organ failure were more frequent during the acute phase in S aureus IE. In-hospital mortality(34%v 10%, phigher in patients with S aureus IE and the 36 month actuarial survival rate was lower in S aureus IE than in IE caused by other pathogens(47%v 68%, p=0.002). Multivariate analyses identified S aureus infection as a predictive factor for in-hospital mortality and for overall mortality. Conclusions: S aureus IE compared with IE caused by other pathogens occurs in a more debilitated clinical setting and is characterised by a higher prevalence of severe sepsis, major neurological events, and multiple organ failure leading to higher mortality.

The outcome of this study is to improve and enhance the power quality of the hybrid DC/AC microgrid(MG).The photovoltaic(PV)system and the proton exchange membrane fuel cell(PEMFC)are used as renewable energy sources to deliver the optimum active power to the utility *** MG system based on the PV system,PEMFC and voltage source inverter is modelled ***,the maximum power point tracking(MPPT)-based grey wolf optimization(GWO)is used to increase the PV module efficiency and enhance ***,to improve the PEMFC performance,a digital proportional-integral controller is used to control the PEMFC *** proposed inverter is controlled using synchronous reference frame theory,called the direct-quadrature(dq)control ***,the performance of the proposed MG system is tested using MATLAB®for various weather and loading condi*** the simulation results,the proposed MG system can deliver and absorb an active power based on the PV and fuel cell *** a result,the hybrid DC/AC MG is enhanced in terms of stabilization of the DC-bus ***,the power quality of the MG is improved using GWO optimization based on ***,good results are achieved using GWO in terms of the total harmonic distortion of the output current of 2.3%and higher efficiency of 98.9%.

We present first results from a hybrid coplanar waveguide microfluidic tank circuit for monitoring lipid bilayer formation and fluctuations of integrated proteins. The coplanar waveguide is a radio frequency resonator operating at ~250 Mhz. Changes within the integrated microfluidic chamber, such as vesicle bursting and subsequent nanopore formation alter the reflected signal, and can be detected with nanosecond resolution. We show experimental evidence of such alterations when the microfluidic channel is filled with giant unilamellar vesicles (GUVs). Subsequent settling and bursting of the GUVs form planar lipid bilayers, yielding a detectable change in the resonant frequency of the device. Results from finite element simulations of our device correlate well with our experimental evidence. These simulations also indicate that nanopore formation within the bilayer is easily detectable. The simulated structure allows for incorporation of microfluidics as well as simultaneous RF and DC recordings. The technique holds promise for high throughput drug screening applications and could also be used as an in-plane probe for various other applications. It opens up possibilities of exploring ion channels and other nano scale pores in a whole new frequency band allowing for operating at bandwidths well above the traditional DC methods.
