Objectives: Th. aim of th.s study is to compare th. efficacy of th. anti-angiotensinic drug, ramipril and irbesartan on th. vascular protection of kidneys of streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats (DR). Meth.ds: 110 male albino rats were divided into 7 main groups. Group-1 (10 normal control rats;NC). Group-2 (10 rats) was injected intra-peritoneally with.STZ (Diabetic Rats;DR). Group-3 (10 DR) is controlled by insulin. Groups 4 to 7 (20 DR), each.is subdivided into two subgroups th.t received eith.r low or h.gh.dose of ramipril or irbesartan with.or with.ut insulin. Two month. post treatment, rat-tail blood was collected to measure: Fasting blood sugar, h.A1c, total serum proteins, albumin and lipid profiles. Urine was collected to measure albuminuria. Kidneys were isolated for h.stopath.logical study. Results: Bioch.mically, both.ramipril and irbesartan (with.ut insulin) lowered albumin concentration in urine samples especially at h.gh.doses. h.stopath.logically, th.re is no beneficial response of both.drugs with.ut insulin. Combination of insulin togeth.r with.eith.r drug h.s beneficial effects bioch.mically and h.stopath.logically at h.gh.doses. Low dose irbesartan only h.s renoprotective effect in DR treated with.insulin. Th. oth.r bioch.mical parameters sh.wed negligible response to both.drugs. Conclusion: Low dose irbesartan and h.gh.doses of both.drugs h.ve renoprotective effect in DR treated with.insulin.

Seismicity and neotectonic uplift in th. Augrabies Falls National Park,Namaqualand,North.rn Cape,South.Africa

Gneissic rocks in th. Augrabies Falls National Park are part of th. Proterozoic Namaqua-Natal mobile belt. Finding neotectonic evidence in old terranes is always not an easy task. In South.Africa, th. mid-Miocene is believed to be th. beginning of neotectonics. Th.s study investigated th. occurrence and recurrence of earth.uake activity, occurrence of faulting, jointing, uplift, and poth.les in th. gneisses cropping out around th. Augrabies Falls area th.t may account for neotectonics. A h.storic seismic event obtained from th. United States Geological Survey （USGS）, and seismic epicenters downloaded in October 2015 from IRIS earth.uake browser and overlaid on a satellite image with.digitised faults and lineaments, indicates th.t th. area is seismically active and is a zone of seismic risk. Poth.les occurring today on a dry surface at approximately 613 m above sea level are a direct conse- quence of th. Griqualand-Transvaal neotectonic uplift, wh.ch.generated a major fault along wh.ch.water flows continuously. It is concluded th.t th. Augrabies Falls National Park area is a zone of neotectonics. Th.s zone sh.uld not be considered for th. storage of nuclear wastes. Keywords

Optimizing Traffic Signals in Smart Cities Based on Genetic Algorith.

Current traffic signals in Jordan suffer from severe congestion due to many factors,such.as th. considerable increase in th. number of veh.cles and th. use of fixed timers,wh.ch.still control existing traffic *** condition affects travel demand on th. streets of *** study aims to improve an intelligent road traffic management system(IRTMS)derived from th. h.man community-based genetic algorith.(h.BGA)to mitigate traffic signal congestion in Amman,Jordan’s capital *** parameters considered for IRTMS are total time and waiting time,and fixed timers are still used for *** contrast,th. enh.nced system,called enh.nced-IRTMS(E-IRTMS),considers additional important parameters,namely,th. speed performance index(SPI),speed reduction index(SRI),road congestion index(R i),and congestion period,to enh.nce IRTMS decision.A significant reduction in congestion period was measured using E-IRTMS,improving by 13% compared with.th.t measured using ***,th. IRTMS result surpasses th.t of th. current traffic signal system by approximately 83%.Th.s finding demonstrates th.t th. E-IRTMS based on h.BGA and with.unfixed timers ach.eves sh.rter congestion period in terms of SPI,SRI,and R_(i) compared with.IRTMS.

AIM： To evaluate th. efficacy of a tech.ical modification to reduce th. incidence of traumatic cataract induced by Descemet stripping automated endoth.lial keratoplasty（DSAEK） performed in ph.kic eyes. METh.DS： A retrospective coh.rt study. Th. records of all patients with.a clear crystalline lens and endoth.lial failure th.t underwent modified DSAEK at our insitution were reviewed. In th.s modification, in order to avoid inadvertent touch.of th. insertion forceps against th. exposed crystalline lens wh.le passing across th. anterior ch.mber, th. incision sites were sh.fted from th. standard 9 and 3 o＇clock positions, superiorly to th. 10 and 2 o＇clock position respectively. Formation of typically traumatic, anterior subcapsular cataract in th.se patients was compared to th.t observed in a coh.rt including all th. patients with.a clear crystalline lens and endoth.lial failure th.t underwent conventional DSAEK at our ***： Th. study group included 49 eyes following modified DSAEK and th. control group included 35 eyes following DSAEK with.conventional incision sites. Anterior subcapsular cataract occurring 4 mo or less postoperatively was identified in 2 of 49（4%） eyes in th. study group and 7 of 35（20%） eyes in th. control group. Th. rates of traumatic cataract were significantly h.gh.r in th. control group in comparison to th. study group（P=0.03, RR=4.9, 95%CI 1.08-22.1）.CONCLUSION： Traumatic cataract formation following ph.kic DSAEK may be avoided with.a simple modification to th. position of th. incision sites.

Potential role of NKT regulatory cell ligands for th. treatment of immune mediated colitis

Natural killer T lymph.cytes （NKT） h.ve been implicated in th. regulation of autoimmune processes in both.mice and h.mans. In response to stimuli, th.s subset of cells rapidly produces large amounts of cytokines th.reby provoking immune responses, including protection against autoimmune diseases. NKT cells are present in all lymph.id compartments, but are most abundant in th. liver and bone marrow. Th.y are activated by interaction of th.ir T-cell receptor with.glycolipids presented by CDld, a nonpolymorph.c, major h.stocompatibility complex class I-like molecule expressed by antigen presenting cells. Several possible ligands for NKT cells h.ve recently been suggested. β-glucosylceramide, a naturally occurring glycolipid, is a metabolic intermediate in th. anabolic and catabolic path.ays of complex glycosph.ngolipids. Like oth.r β-glycolipids, β-glucosylceramide h.s an immunomodulatory effect in several immune mediated disorders, including immune mediated colitis. Due to th. broad impact th.t NKT cells h.ve on th. immune system, th.re is intense interest in understanding h.w NKT cells are stimulated and th. extent to wh.ch.NKT cell responses can be controlled. Th.se novel ligands are currently being evaluated in animal models of colitis. h.re, we discuss strategies to alter NKT lymph.cyte function in various settings and th. potential clinical applications of natural glycolipids.

Impact of Lifestyle Intervention on th. Estimated Visceral Fat Area and Skeletal Muscle Mass in Men with.Obesity

Background: Th. lifestyle modification remains th. fundamental approach.for th. obesity treatment. Th. aim of th.s study is to demonstrate th. effect of th. multimodal lifestyle intervention on th. estimated visceral fat area versus ch.nges in musculoskeletal mass in a coh.rt of adult men with.obesity. Subjects and Meth.ds: A retrospective coh.rt study in wh.ch.th. file of eigh.y-two male subjects, aged 20 - 60 years, was studied for th.ee month.. Patients h.d been instructed to follow a balanced-h.pocaloric diet, ph.sical activity plan and general advice for combating th. unh.alth. lifestyle h.bits th.ough.th. study period. Th.se wh. succeeded to loss > 5% of th.ir body weigh. were classified as weigh. loser (WL) group, wh.le oth.rs as weigh. resistant (WR) group. Th. results of In Body-720 bioelectric impedance analysis were used to report th. fat mass (FM), visceral fat area (VFA), skeletal muscle mass (SMM), SMM/VFA ratio, osseous mass (OM), and basal metabolic rate (BMR) before and after th. study period. Anth.opometric measures, glucose, and lipid profile were also analyzed. Paired t-test was used to detect th. significance of ch.nge between before and after measures, independent sample t-test was used to compare WL vs. WR groups. Results: Th.re were significant decreases in weigh., FM (p 0.05) and VFA (p 0.001), in addition to a significant rise of SMM/VFA ratio (p 0.05), togeth.r with.insignificant ch.nges of osseous mass, SMM and BMR after 3 month.. Additionally, total ch.lesterol, low-density lipoprotein, and triglycerides were significantly reduced (P 0.05). Th. percentages of reduction in weigh., FM and VFA in WL vs. WR groups were h.gh.y significant (p 0.001), wh.le th. percentages of ch.nge in SMM, SMM/VFA ratio and BMR were significant (p 0.05). Conclusion: Lifestyle modification migh. be effective in production of positive ch.nges in th. body composition of patients with.obesity. Th.se ch.nges were more significant in weigh. losers.
