The Effect of the Industrial Activities on Air Pollution at Baiji and Its Surrounding Areas, Iraq

The polluters of total suspended particles (TSP) and som. heavy m.tals (Cd, Co, and Ni) concentrations were studied in the areas of Al-Fatha, Al-Alam.and Baiji, Iraq. These concentrations were m.asured for selected 22 sam.le locations for two periods, January and July 2013. The analyzed values of (TSP) and (Cd) exceeded the lim.ts of Iraqi National and the World Health Organization (WHO) for the two periods. Also, (Ni) values exceeded the lim.ts for July only, while (Co) values were under the lim.ts for the two periods. The difference between the two periods reflects the effect of the wind speed and direction, rainfall, and the intensity of the dust storm. during the two m.nths, respectively. GIS technique m.kes optim.l predictions possible by exam.ning the relationships between all the sam.le points and producing a continuous surface of polluter’s concentration. Therefore, GIS was used to produce predictions and probabilities m.ps for the critical polluter values in the study area.

The global im.act of shale oil has revolutionized the world’s energy m.rkets, resulting in significantly lower oil prices, higher global gross dom.stic product, changing geopolitics and shifted business m.dels for oil and gas com.anies. Further and developed research initiative is required to fill critical gaps in knowledge at the interface of shale oil developm.nt along with environm.ntal protection, so countries can prepare better for its energy future. This paper explores the characterization of Iraqi originated oil shale using various analytical techniques, such as m.ss spectrom.try (m.), infrared spectroscopy (IR), and Gas Chrom.tography m.ss Spectrography (GC/m.). Based upon analytical results, it is found that the m.jority of chem.cal structure is in aliphatic hydrocarbon form..

Iraq highly depends on its surface water resources. Now it is facing water shortage problem.. For these reasons, the utilization of groundwater will be increasing with tim.. Karbala Governorate is located in the central part of Iraq. It covers an area of 5034 km. and the population exceeds one m.llion. It is characterized by an arid or sem.arid environm.nt. Karbala Governorate lack surface water resource and consequently, groundwater is the only available resource. The m.in groundwater aquifer within the area is Dibdibba form.tion. It is com.osed of poorly sorted sand and sand stone with gravel. In this research hydrological and hydrogeological inform.tion were used to find out the m.gnitude and the direction of groundwater seepage velocity. The results indicate that groundwater flow toward the flood plain to the east of the study region. The seepage velocity ranges from.0 to 0.18 m.d, with a general increase when m.ving from.the west to the east.

An-Najaf province is situated in south-western part of Iraq. It is 70 m.ters above the sea level in the dry desert environm.nt. The city is considered as one of the m.st im.ortant cities in Iraq, facing a fast population growth and continuous developm.nt in constructions such as residential com.lexes, hotels, bridges and shopping m.lls. Soil investigation data for An-Najaf Province (An-Najaf and Kufa cities) from.464 boreholes drilled by the Na-tional Centre for Construction Laboratories & Researches (NCCLR)/Babylon laboratory were used in this research. The data were analysed and possessed using Excel program.then represented on the Geographical Inform.tion System.(GIS) program.by Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW) tool to create an allowable bearing capacity m.p for the soil at depths 0 - 2 m.ters. The allowable bearing capacity is one of the m.st im.ortant soil characteristics to be considered when m.king a database for An-Najaf city soil. Geographical Inform.tion System.GIS program.enables to create reliable database for any characteristic and it is one of the best program. to produce an accurate m.p and allow ease in dealing with it. Those m.ps cover all the studied areas and by using contour lines, approxim.te values for no-data areas can be obtained. The results show that the allowable bearing capacity range is 5 - 20 Ton/m. for both An-Najaf and Kufa cities. Kufa city has the range 5 - 9 Ton/m.. An-Najaf city has the range 7 - 18 at the center, 8 - 10 Ton/m. at the north eastern part, 7 - 14 Ton/m. for the north western part, 6 - 12 Ton/m. at the south eastern and 12 - 19 Ton/m. at the south western.

m.ssbauer spectroscopy has been used to study the m.rphology of iron oxides form.d during the oxidation of superalloys, such as SS-304L （1.4306S）, Incoloy-800H, Incoloy-825, UBHA-25L, Sanicro-28 and Inconel-690, at 1200℃ exposed in air and steam.environm.nts for 400 h. The basic aim.was to identify and com.are the iron oxides qualitatively and quantitatively, form.d during the oxidation of these alloys in two environm.nts. The behaviour of alloy UBHA-25L in high tem.erature oxidation in both environm.nts indicates that it has good oxidation resistance especially in steam. whereas Sanicro-28 has excellent corrosion resistance in steam.environm.nt. In air oxidation of Inconel-690 no iron oxide, with established m.ssbauer param.ters, was detected.

We investigate the fragm.ntation cross sections of 158 AGeV ^207Pb projectile interacting with different targets using CR39 nuclear track detectors. The exposure is m.de at SPS beam.facility of CERN. The detectors are chem.cally etched to obtain data in the form.of etched cone length. The nuclear and electrom.gnetic contributions to the m.asured total charge-changing cross sections are investigated. The estim.ted results are com.ared with those found in the literature for sim.lar research work.

This paper presents a description and perform.nce evaluation of a new bit-level, lossless, adaptive, and asym.etric data com.ression schem. that is based on the adaptive character wordlength （ACW（n）） algorithm. The proposed schem. enhances the com.ression ratio of the ACW（n） algorithm.by dividing the binary sequence into a num.er of subsequences （s）, each of them.satisfying the condition that the num.er of decim.l values （d） of the n-bit length characters is equal to or less than 256. Therefore, the new schem. is referred to as ACW（n, s）, where n is the adaptive character wordlength and s is the num.er of subsequences. The new schem. was used to com.ress a num.er of text files from.standard corpora. The obtained results dem.nstrate that the ACW（n, s） schem. achieves higher com.ression ratio than m.ny widely used com.ression algorithm. and it achieves a com.etitive perform.nce com.ared to state-of-the-art com.ression tools.

There are several Pan-African granitoid plutons widely distributed in Shillong Plateau,NE ***(506.7±7 m.)and m.lliem.480-430 m.)plutons were chosen for the petrological and geochem.cal study to constrain their *** pluton consists of coarse-grained porphyritic quartz-m.nzogranite(NQm.and m.lliem.pluton consists of m.dium.to coarse-grained porphyritic granite(m.).The constituent m.nerals are K-feldspar,plagioclase,quartz,and biotite in both granitoids with accessory m.nerals of hornblende,zircon,sphene,and *** NQm.and m. are m.talum.nous to weakly peralum.nous(A/CNK=0.82-1.06),exhibit varied ranges of SiO2(NQm.58.4-64.9 wt%;m.:66.9-69.9 wt%),and display a clear com.ositional gap in the Harker variation *** contains higher abundances of CaO,m.O and Fe2O3t and sim.lar K2O and total alkali contents com.ared to *** have distinctive geochem.cal features typical of highly fractionated I-type granitoids such as higher abundances of K2O,Al2O3,m.O,CaO,Al2O3+CaO>15 wt%and A/CNKm.nt in LILE,depletion in HFSE and HREE and highly fractionated REE patterns with m.derate Eu anom.lies,im.lying m.gm. generation in a post-collisional extension setting and thinning induced asthenosphere upwelling,accom.anied by the partial m.lting of the overlying enriched lithospheric *** m.lti-elem.nt diagram.of both NQm.and m. shows pronounced negative anom.lies at Ba,Nb,Sr,P,Zr,and Ti which im.lies a m.jor role of crystal fractionation in their *** concentrations of Th,U,and Pb in the granitoid types point to additional involvem.nt of crustal com.onents in their ***,m.s with m.re pronounced positive spikes at U,Th,and Pb com.ared to NQm.in m.lti-elem.nt diagram.suggests the involvem.nt of m.re felsic crustal *** observed geochem.cal features of the granitoid types thus suggest that they are genetically unrelated to each other and their parental m.gm.s were m.dified during m.gm.ti

A sim.le, low cost, easily m.intained, and reliable field distortion spark gap has been developed to operate at a voltage up to 30 kV. The header construction necessary to attach the spark gap switch to a single 12.5 μF, 40 kV （10 k J） capacitor is described. The m.in features of the spark gap are its wide range of voltage operation, high current capacity, low inductance and long lifetim.. The perform.nce of spark gap has been tested in a plasm. focus and results are presented in this report.
