Marble is a metamorphic rock, which is one of the 3 basic rock types (magmatic, sedimentary, metamorphic) forming the earth’s crust. The major characteristic sought after in a rock mass in the field for it to be exportable and usable as marble is its suitability to be cut in blocks. In the process of producing marble slabs from marble blocks, the blocks are expected not to contain potentially problematic hard or weak zones and their geomechanical and chemical properties should conform to the relevant standards. Ignoring of the geological properties of the rock in the process of deciding for marble production at a marble site and determination of production location, direction and method is the most important parameter that would increase production loss. In order to reduce losses by determination of geological properties of marble, many academic studies have been conducted on the effects of water saturation, temperature, freezing and thawing on its mechanical and fracture properties. There are further studies on crack propagation in marble under stress. However, even those marble blocks that are obtained based on geological parameters may suffer serious cracks or fractures due to stresses caused by their weight and geometry. Therefore, cutting direction is of critical importance in order to minimize marble waste in the process of cutting a marble block which is brought to the inventory or processing site with cracks, cavities or fractures. Certain studies exist within such context, where the geometry of the discontinuity within a block is determined using non-destructive methods, such as ultrasonic testing, in order to determine the appropriate cutting direction. Such studies made use of ultrasonic waves to determine the physical and chemical structures of magmatic and sedimentary rocks by measuring the progress velocity of sonic waves in the rock. Significance of IL-1Ra and IL-6 gene variants in Turkish patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever

Objective: To investigate the association between IL-1 Ra variable number of tandem repeat(rs2234663), IL-6-597 GA(rs1800797), IL-6-572 GC(rs1800796) and the risk of CrimeanCongo hemorrhagic fever(CCHF) in the Turkish patients. Methods: This study included 50 patients infected with CCHF and 50 healthy controls. These variants were genotyped using polymerase chain reaction and/or restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Results: The distribution of the IL-6-572 GC genotypes and alleles varied significantly between the patients and the controls. The subjects carrying IL-6-572 GC GG genotype and G allele had increased risk of developing CCHF compared to the control group(P=0.006, P=0.014, respectively). IL-6-572 GC GC genotype was higher in the controls than the patients(P=0.006). For the triple genotype combinations, the 1/2-GC-GG genotype combination was detected more frequently in the control group than CCHF patients(P=0.016). IL-6(-572/-597) GG-GG genotype was significantly higher in the patient group(P=0.015), while the GC-GG genotype was significantly lower in the patient group(P=0.005). Additionally, the G-G haplotype was significantly higher in the patient group(P=0.042), whereas C-G was found to be significantly lower in the patients than the control group(P=0.037). Conclusions: The results of this study suggest the IL-6-572 GC variant might be genetic markers of sensitivity to CCHF in the Turkish population and may facilitate greater protection against the disease.

Retardation of Corrected QT Dispersion Recovery, Heart Rate Recovery and Increase of QT Dispersion in Patients with Pseudoexfoliative Syndrome;Are They Predictors of Malignant Arrythmias?

Background: In pseudoexfoliative syndrome (PEX), extraocular accumulation is associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of exercise test on corrected QT dispersion (QTcd) and QTcd recovery in PEX. Patients and Methods: A total of 37 patients diagnosed as PEX were included in the study. The control group consisted of 38 patients. The Electrocardiographies (ECG) were taken. The patients were subjected to an exercise test. Results: In the study group, baseline, peak and third minute recovery QTcd values were 41.35 ± 7.27 ms, 65.19 ± 7.83 ms, and 53.61 ± 6.45 ms, respectively. In the control group, baseline, peak and third minute recovery QTcd values were 29.92 ± 4.23 ms, 38.31 ± 4.22 ms and 28.76 ± 3.09 ms, respectively. There was statistically significant?difference between the baseline and peak QTcd values of the study group and?the control group (t = 8.34224/p 0.00001, t = 18.55079/p 0.00001, respectively). In addition, while there was a statistically significant?difference between the baseline QTcd and the third minute recovery QTcd in the study group, there was no statistically significant difference between the baseline QTcd value and the third minute recovery QTcd value in the control group as heart rate recovery (t = 8.388558/p 0.00001, t = 1.967315/p = 0.056668, respectively).?Conclusion: All of them were found to have a higher risk in terms of malignant ventricular arrhythmia in the study group, both at rest and with effort, in a statistically significant way compared to the control group.
