Proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy （^1 H-MRS） permits the assessment of cerebral neurometabolites, such as N-acetylaspartate, choline, and creatine, in vivo and has been used to study schizophrenia. The present study used ^1H-MRS to compare the spectroscopy change of N-acetylaspartate, creatine, and choline metabolite levels in the anterior cingulate and caudate nucleus of both schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, as well as between the left and right cerebral hemispheres in the schizophrenia patients. Results showed that N-acetylaspartate and creatine metabolite levels in the left anterior cingulate gyrus were significantly lower in the schizophrenia patients than in the healthy controls, indicating hypometabolism. In addition, choline concentration in the left caudate nucleus of schizophrenia patients was significantly lower than in the right caudate nucleus, indicating that it is necessary to study the cerebral lateralization of ^1H-MRS in schizophrenia patients.

Aim： To evaluate the effects of melatonin on antioxidant enzyme levels and histopathologic changes in dizocilpine （MK-801）-induced psychosis model rat testis. Methods： A total of 24 adult male Wistar-Albino rats were divided into three groups with 8 in each. Group I was used as control. Rats in Group II were injected with MK-801 （0.5 mg/kg body weight i.p. for 5 days）. In addition to MK-801, melatonin （50 mg/kg body weight i.p. once a day for 5 days） was injected into the rats in Group Ⅲ. The testes were harvested bilaterally for biochemical and histopathological examinations. Antioxidant enzyme activities, malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl and nitric oxide （NO） levels in testicular tissues were analyzed using spectrophotometric analysis methods. Histopathological examinations of the testes were also performed. Results： MK-801 induced testicular damage, which resulted in significant oxidative stress （OS） by increasing the levels of antioxidant enzymes. The malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl and NO levels were increased in testicular tissues of rats. Treatment with melatonin led to significant decrease in oxidative injury. Administration of melatonin also reduced the detrimental histopathologic effects caused by MK-801. Conclusion： The results of the present study showed that MK-801 cause OS in testicular tissues of rats and treatment with melatonin can reduce the harmful effects＇of MK-801. （Asian JAndro12008 Mar; 10： 259-265）

Pseudoxantoma elasticum is a rare, hereditary, multisystemic disease affecting the skin, eye, and cardiovascular system. A twenty-eight-year-old female has presented to emergency unit with the complaint of gastrointestinal hemorrhage. This patient, who had been monitored in the gastroenterology clinic more than 10 times in the past 8 years, noted a repetitive hemorrhage during her previous pregnancy in her history. The examination of the patient revealed the following signs and symptoms： atrophy in the epithelium of the retina pigment; typical angioid streaks and peau d＇orange finding in the fundus; thinning of the retinal nerve fiber in OCT （optic coherence tomography）; bilateral and reticular papillary lesions with yellowish- color in the neck region （plucked chicken appearance）; presence of bleeding loci in fundus, and nephrocalcinosis in kidneys. In light of these symptoms, the patient was diagnosed with pseudoxantoma elasticum. Skin biopsy confirmed the pseudoxantoma elasticum diagnose. PXE is an uncommon, hereditary disease. Early diagnosis of pseudoxantoma elasticum cases, is important for minimalizing systemic complications and informing the other family members through genetic counseling.

The biochemical effects of ischemia-reperfusion injury in the ipsilateral and contralateral testes of rats and the protective role of melatonin

Testicular torsion （TT） is a serious urologic emergency that is observed in adolescent males and that can lead to infertility if left untreated. The ischemia-reperfusion （I/R） injury due to TT has been implicated in the pathogenesis of testicular damage. We investigated the effects of melatonin on oxidative damage in the ipsUateral and contralateral testes of rats induced by unilateral TT. A total of 21 prepubertal male Wistar albino rats were divided into three groups, each consisting of seven rats, In Group 1 （SHAM group）： a sham operation to the left testis and bilateral orchiectomy were performed. In Group 2 （I/R group）： I/R injury was created by rotating the left testis 720° in a clockwise direction for 2 h and detorsing the testis after 2 h. Group 3 （I/R ＋ MEL group）： rats were subjected to I/R injury and one-shot melatonin injection （50mgkg-1, intraperitoneal （i.p.））. The testes of the rats were excised bilaterally in all groups. The testicular tissue activities of antioxidant catalase （CAT）, superoxide dismutase （SOD） and glutathione peroxidase enzymes （GSH-Px）, and the tissue levels of malondialdehyde （MDA）, protein carbonyl （PC） and nitric oxide （NO） were determined. Administration of melatonin caused a significant decrease in lipid peroxidation and enzyme activities in the ipsilateral testis when compared with the control group （P 〈 0.05）. All of the changes in the enzyme activities of the contralateral testis were insignificant （P 〉 0.05）. MDA levels were significantly altered in the contralateral testis （P = 0.009）, Melatonin administration decreased the deleterious effects of I/R injury in the ipsilateral torted testes of the rats. The contralateral testes were slightly affected by unilateral TT.

In this paper, the convenience of encapsulation technique was investigated in terms of characterization of capsule, changing the volatile compounds and preservation biological activity throughout six months for black garlic (BG) by comparison with the aqueous extract which prepared from BG (stored at 4℃) each analysis period. Besides, the genotoxic and antigenotoxic aspects of aqueous black garlic extract (BGE) and black garlic capsule (BGC) developed as a novel promising product were also researched. The S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC) content, which is mostly known to be responsible for biological activity, was preserved in BGC during six months. The variety of volatile compound of BGC (2 compounds) was significantly reduced compared to BG (17 compounds) and BGE (7 compounds), which indicates that the extraction and encapsulation traps the undesirable odor. A significant decrease was observed for total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity (performed with DPPH and CUPric Reducing Antioxidant Capacity (CUPRAC)) of BGC with storage like BGE. In contrast, the values obtained with the ABTS method remained constant with storage. The antimicrobial activity (carried out on five Gram-positive bacteria, three Gram-negative bacteria and three yeasts) of BGC was preserved better than BGE. The treatment concentrations (50, 100, 200 μg/mL) of both BGE and BGC did not have a genotoxic effect and moreover they have antigenotoxic effects against mitomycin C on human lymphocyte cells. All these results implied that BGC can be good a candidate to increase the consumption of BG providing health benefits and functional supplement for food.

AIM: To evaluate survival data in patients with gastric cancer in relation to postoperative adjuvant therapy and survival determinantsMETHODS: A total of 201 patients(mean ± SD age: 56.0 ± 11.9 years, 69.7% were males) with gastric carcinoma who were operated and followed up at Lutfi Kirdar Kartal Training and Research Hospital between 1998 and 2010 were included in this retrospective study. Follow up was evaluated divided into two consecutive periods(before 2008 and 2008-2010, respectively) based on introduction of 3-D conformal technique in radiotherapy at our clinic in 2008. Data on patient demographics, clinical and histopathological characteristics of gastric carcinoma and the type of treatment applied after surgery [postoperative adjuvant treatment protocols including chemoradiotherapy(CRT) and chemotherapy(CT), supportive therapy or follow up without any treatment] were recorded. The median duration and determinants of local recurrence free(LRF) survival, distant metastasis free(DMF) survival and overall survival were evaluated in the overall population as well as with respect to follow up years [1998-2008(n = 127) vs 2008-2010(n = 74)].RESULTS: Median duration for LRF survival, DMF survival and overall survival were 31.9, 24.1 and 31.9 mo, respectively in patients with postoperative adjuvant CRT. No significant difference was noted in median duration for LRF survival, DMF survival and overall survival with respect to treatment protocols in the overall population and also with respect to followed up periods. In the overall population, CT protocols FUFA [5-fluorouracil(400 mg/m2) and leucovorin-folinic acid(FA, 20 mg/m2)](29.9 mo) and UFT + Antre [a fixed combination of the oral FU prodrug tegafur(flouroprymidine, FT, 300 mg/m2 per day) with FA(Antrex?), 15 mg tablet, two times a day](42.5 mo) was significantly associated with longer LRF survival times than other CT protocols(P = 0.036), while no difference was noted between CT protocols in terms of DMF surviv
