Comparison of clinical and histopathological features of patients who underwent incidental or emergency appendectomy

BACKGROUND Incidental appendectomy can be defined as the removal of a clinically normal appendix during another surgical procedure unrelated to appendicitis or other appendicular *** To compare the demographic, biochemical, and histopathological features of the patients who underwent incidental and standard *** The demographic, biochemical, and histopathological data of 72 patients(Incidental App group) who underwent incidental appendectomy during living donor hepatectomy at our Liver Transplant Center between June 2009 and December 2016 were compared with data of 288 patients(Acute App group) who underwent appendectomy for presumed acute appendicitis. The Incidental App group was matched at random in a 1:4 ratio with the Acute App group in the same time frame. Appendectomy specimens of both groups were re-evaluated by two experienced *** Statistically significant differences were found between groups in terms of age(P= 0.044), white blood cell count(P < 0.001), neutrophil(P < 0.001), lymphocyte(P< 0.001), red cell distribution width(P = 0.036), mean corpuscular hemoglobin(P= 0.001), bilirubin(P = 0.002), appendix width(P < 0.001), and presence of acute appendicitis histopathologically(P < 0.001). However, no statistically significant differences were found between groups in terms of gender, platelet, mean platelet volume, mean corpuscular volume, platelet distribution width, appendix length. While the most common histopathological findings in the Incidental App group were normal appendix vermiformis(72.2%), fibrous obliteration(9.7%)and acute appendicitis(6.9%), the most common histopathological findings in the Acute App group were non-perforated acute appendicitis(62.8%), perforated appendicitis(16.7%), lymphoid hyperplasia(8.3%), and appendix vermiformis(6.3%).CONCLUSION Careful inspection of the entire abdominal cavity is useful for patients undergoing major abdominal surgery such as donor hepatectomy. Early endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography after laparoscopic cholecystectomy can strain the occurrence of trocar site hernia

This study reports a 69-year-old, obese, female patientpresenting with a biliary leakage after laparoscopiccholecystectomy for cholelithiasis. Closure of the um-bilical trocar site had been neglected during the lapa-roscopic cholecystectomy. Early, on postoperative dayfive, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography(ERCP) requirement after laparoscopic cholecystectomyresolved the biliary leakage problem but resulted with amore complicated clinical picture with an intestinal ob-struction and severe abdominal pain. Computed tomog-raphy revealed a strangulated hernia from the umbilicaltrocar site. Increased abdominal pressure during ERCPhad strained the weak umbilical trocar site. Emergencysurgical intervention through the umbilicus revealed anischemic small bowel segment which was treated withresection and anastomosis. This report demonstratesthat negligence of trocar site closure can result in veryearly herniation, particularly if an endoscopic interven-tion is required in the early postoperative period.

Performance investigation of Fe_3O_4 blended poly(vinylidene fluoride) membrane on filtration and benzyl alcohol oxidation:Evaluation of sufficiency for catalytic reactors

Fe_3O_4-PVDF membranes were prepared by blending of magnetic Fe_3O_4 powders with polyvinylidene fluoride to investigate whether those were usable or not in catalytic membrane reactors. Filtration performances and catalytic activity of membranes in microwave conditions were measured in separate processes. Composite Fe_3O_4-PVDF membranes were characterized by TG-DTA, FTIR, XRD, SEM and contact angle *** of α-phases at PVDF was observed with increasing amount of additives from XRD diffraction patterns. Decomposition of polymer fastened due to catalytic effect of Fe_3O_4. Finger-like structures and large number of small pores were observed at the SEM images. Those provided effective transportation of substrate among the active sites of catalyst. At the experiments conducted in batch reactor, 51%, 77%, 66% and 63% benzyl alcohol conversion were recorded for 2%, 4%, 6% and 8% Fe_3O_4-PVDF composite pieces respectively. Catalyst were separated magnetically and reused several times. On the other hand Fe_3O_4 blended PVDF membranes provided improved flux and BSA rejection compared with performance of bare PVDF membrane; 41.6% BSA rejection was obtained with 4% Fe_3O_4-PVDF whereas it was only 6.7% for PVDF. Fe_3O_4-PVDF composites performed high activity for the benzyl alcohol oxidation in batch reactor and also better filtration at filtration cell. These results promise to obtain practical and low cost membrane material for catalytic reactors usable in microwave support to get fast results.

Evaluating the usability of recycled aggregates as fill materials depending on the composition and strength of their grains

Tribological and Electrochemical Corrosion Properties of CNT-Incorporated Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation(PEO)Coatings on AZ80 Magnesium Alloy

Plasma electrolytic oxidation(PEO)coatings were carried out in silicate-based electrolyte embedded with various amounts of carbon nanotube(CNT)additives(0,0.5,1,2 and 4 g/L)on AZ80 magnesium alloy ***,tribological and electrochemical corrosion properties of the coated specimens were *** results demonstrated that the increasing CNT additions into the electrolyte resulted in a gradual increase in the thickness of PEO-coating *** CNT addition to the electrolyte by 0.5 g/L resulted in a slight decrease in the roughness of PEO-coating above which it continually *** resistance of the PEO-coated specimens showed a gradual improvement with increasing CNT-incorporation within the *** electrochemical corrosion tests revealed that the best corrosion resistance was found after the CNT addition into the electrolyte by 0.5 g/L due to the better roughness values,more homogenous coating layers and less pore formation.

Mechanical and Antibacterial Properties of Injection Molded Polypropylene/TiO_2 Nano-Composites:Effects of Surface Modification

Polypropylene （PP）/titanium dioxide （TiO2） nano-composites were prepared by melt compounding with a twin screw extruder. Nanoparticles were modified prior to melt mixing with maleic anhydride grafted styreneethylene-butylene-styrene （SEBS-g-MA） and silane. The composites were injection molded and mechanical tests were applied to obtain tensile strength, elastic modulus and impact strength. Antibacterial efficiency test was applied on the injection molded composite plaques by viable cell counting technique. The results showed that the composites including SEBS-g-MA and silane coated TiO2 gave better mechanical properties than the composites without SEBS-g-MA. Antibacterial efficiency of the composites varied according to the dispersion and the concentration of the particles and it was observed that composites at low content of TiO2 showed higher antibacterial property due to the better photocatalytic activity of the particles during UV exposure.

Effect of Y addition on microstructure and corrosion behavior of extruded Mg-Zn-Nd-Zr alloy

In this study,the effect of Y addition(0,0.5,1 and 2 wt%)on microstructure and corrosion properties of Mg-6Zn-0.5Zr-1 Nd(wt%)alloy was *** alloys were produced by low-pressure die casting method and extruded at 300℃and 400℃after homogenization treatment at 400℃for 24 *** results showed that the as-cast microstructure of the alloy with no Y addition consisted ofα-Mg,Mg-Zn binary and Mg-Zn-Nd ternary *** increasing Y additions,the average grain size showed a substantial decrease and two kinds of ternary Mg-Zn-Y ternary phases,designated as I-phase(Mg3Zn6Y)and W-phase(Mg3Zn3Y2)were *** treatment resulted in a partial dissolution of second phase *** process gave rise to a remarkable grain refinement due to the DRX *** extruded alloys with no Y addition exhibited poor corrosion resistance due to the strong micro galvanic coupling effect.Y additions up to 1 wt%improved the corrosion resistance due to the formation of finer grains,fine and uniform distribution of second phase particles and more stable oxide film.

Simulations of mass attenuation coefficients for shielding materials using the MCNP-X code

In this paper,mass attenuation coefficients of concrete,bricks and cement plaster,as shielding materials,are calculated at 59.5,356,662,1173,1274 and 1333 keV by using the MCNP-X(version 2.4.0) *** numerical simulation results are compared with previous Monte Carlo studies,experimental results and XCOM *** effects of barite on mass attenuation coefficients are *** mass attenuation coefficients increase with the barite ***,our results agree well with experimental studies on gamma ray shielding of *** is flexible for the MN method to change the barite rates in material by small increments,which is experimentally ***,modeled geometry can be used for future approaches such as new designs and new structures especially in investigating new barite-containing materials to build nuclear reactors or high-energy radiation therapy facilities.

Heating rate effects for the melting transition of Pt-Ag-Au nanoalloys

The classical molecular dynamics simulations in canonical NVT ensemble conditions are used to investigate the melting transition in different heating rates of Pt-Ag-Au ternary *** order to obtain the initial configurations used in the molecular dynamics simulations,optimizing the chemical ordering of Pt_(13)AgnAu_(42−n)(n=0-42)ternary nanoalloys was performed using the Basin-Hopping algorithm which would not allow changes in the icosahedron *** Gupta many-body potential was used to model interatomic interactions in both molecular dynamics simulations and optimization *** melting transitions of selected Pt-Ag-Au nanoalloys were explored using caloric curves and Lindemann *** have been two identified types of melting mechanisms,one includes sudden jump behavior in the caloric curve and the other is an isomerization while melting *** temperature range in which the isomerization takes place depends on the heating rate value.
