Background: Several factors affect the outcome of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) following in hospital cardiac arrests, including presence of comorbidities, arrest characteristics, and resuscitation efforts. We sought to determine the outcome of CPR provided to elders suffering from in-hospital cardiopulmonary arrest and to compare it to the survival of their younger counterparts in a tertiary care center in Lebanon. Methods: Retrospective chart review of all patients suffering from cardiac arrests who received CPR during a one year period in a tertiary care center located in a rural area. Results: A total of 98 cardiac arrests were identified who received CPR according to advance cardiac life support protocols (ACLS). Initial return of spontaneous circulation was higher among younger subjects but the difference was not statistically significant (52.6% vs 34.2%, p = 0.136). Survival to discharge was low but slightly higher in the younger subgroup, yet the difference was not statistically significant (5% vs 3%, p = 0.535). Conclusions: Physicians need to be aware of the outcome of CPR in the hospitals they practice in. They can educate their patients about CPR outcome. Such education may help patients and their next of kin make informed decisions jointly with their physician regarding resuscitation.

Effects of wastewater discharge on the coastal area in Gaza strip Palestine are not fully investigated. This study investigated the effect wastewater discharge of the physical and chemical properties of marine water in the coastal area over a period of 2 year. Sea water and sediment samples were collected from about 20 different sites. The water and the sediments were collected wastewater/sea water mixing zone at depth 0, 2.5 and 5 m water column depth at a direct wastewater discharging pipe line from different location and similarly from other locations. Water temperature T, electric conductivity (EC), dissolved oxygen (DO), pH, total dissolved solid (TDS) and salinity were determined for water samples using field equipment such as pH-meter, DO meter, TDS-/ and EC-meter. On the other hand, NO3-, SO42-, PO43- were determined in the laboratory using chemical methods, details are described in materials and method section. Results showed average and standard deviation of T, EC, DO, pH, TDS and salinity were 22.02°C ± 4.1°C, EC: 58.41 ± 4.8 ms/cm;DO: 6.96 ± 1.8 mg/L;pH: 7.69 ± 0.37;TDS: 30.51 ± 3.29 and salinity 4.39 ± 0.12 (%);whereas, average and standard deviation of NO3-: were 299.8 ± 204.1 mg/L;SO42-, 5736.9 ± 817.1;and PO43-: 164.35 ± 120.7 mg/L. The measured values indicate significant differences due to high value of standard deviation of some measured parameters. This indicates the influence of wastewater discharge in sea water as shown inside the manuscript in the appropriate section. The study recommends efficient treatment of wastewater and reuses it for agricultural purposes instead of discharging it in sea.

BACKGROUND Calcitriol-induced hypercalcemia has been rarely reported in cases of lung cancer;however,it is frequently reported in cases of lymphoid malignancy and granulomatous *** present a rare case of hypercalcemia associated with squamous cell cancer of the lung with elevated calcitriol *** SUMMARY A 61-year-old Caucasian female with severe hypercalcemia of 15 mg/dL,which led to a new diagnosis of metastatic lung *** the parathyroid hormonerelated peptide(PTHrP)level was minimally elevated at 2.1 pmol/L,we believe excessive calcitriol production by tumor cells was the underlying mechanism for *** was significantly elevated at 130 pg/mL with a low 25-hydroxyvitamin D level of 25.9 ng/mL and suppressed PTH level of 8 pg/*** are generally used to treat calcitriol-induced hypercalcemia,but we successfully treated our patient with bisphosphonate,highlighting the further utility of bisphosphonates in hypercalcemia *** We believe that the underlying cause of hypercalcemia,in this case of metastatic squamous cell lung carcinoma,was elevated calcitriol,which was likely produced by the tumor *** addition to PTHrP,calcitriol levels should be included in the workup for hypercalcemia in cases of lung ***,the pathophysiology and prognostic significance of dysregulated calcitriol production in solid tumors remain unclear and warrant further *** may be used as a steroid-sparing therapy even in cases of calcitriol-induced hypercalcemia and warrants further investigation.

目的:研究莲子壳中的黄酮类化学成分及抗氧化活性。方法:莲子壳的60%乙醇提取物经过大孔树脂初步分离之后,采用Toyopearl HW-40S凝胶柱进一步分离得到了6个组分(LF-F1～LF-F6),再采用高效液相以及液质联用系统对其中的组分2(LF-F2)组成及结构进行分析,并采用化学发光法等方法研究了LF-F2的抗氧化活性。结果:莲子壳黄酮粗提物中总黄酮为94.1%;LF-F2中黄酮甙元是由槲皮素、杨梅黄酮、山奈酚、异鼠李素等组成的。LF-F2对超氧阴离子自由基、羟自由基以及对双氧水的清除作用的IC50分别为420、40、0.6μg/ml。结论:从莲子壳中鉴定出LF-F2中有芦丁存在。LF-F2具有很好的抗氧化效果,并存在剂量效应关系。

Objectives: This study aims to describe birth weight and its variations concerning maternal characteristics as well as to standardize birth weight curves for Qatari and expatriate’s newborn population born in the state of Qatar. Methods: PEARL-Peristat registry is a National maternal-neonatal observation epidemiologic database project where both maternal and neonatal cohort data are collected to evaluate specified outcomes for a population defined by a disease, conditions, or exposures. Results: Out of 50,535 singleton deliveries, only 44,178 live-born infants were included in this study. The LBW rate has remained constant since 2011 and was reported as 2.4% in males and 3.5% in females. The average total LBW was 3%.
