AIM To investigate the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and hospitalization events in a cohort of large voluntary arm forces in Taiwan. METHODS The cardiorespiratory fitness and hospitalization events in armed forces(CHIEF) is a retrospective cohort consisting of more than 4000 professional military members aged 18-50 years in Eastern Taiwan. All participants received history taking, physical examination, chest radiography, 12-lead electrocardiography, blood tests for cell counts and fasting glucose, lipid profiles, uric acid, renal function and liver function in the Hualien Armed Forces General Hospital during 2014. In addition, participants were required to undergo two indoor resistant exercise tests including 2-min push-up and 2-min sit-up, both scored by infrared sensing, and one outdoor endurance 3000-m none weight-bearing running test, the main indicator of cardiorespiratory fitness in the Military Physical Training and Testing Center in Eastern Taiwan in 2014. RESULTS Hospitalization events for cardiovascular disease, acute kidney injury, rhabdomyolysis, severe infectious disease, acute psychiatric illness, diabetes, orthopedic surgery and mortality will be identified in the National Insurance Research Database for 10 years. CONCLUSION CHIEF will be among the largest Eastern Asian armed forces cohort, in which physical status was strictly evaluated to follow up the hospitalization events for severe illness.

We report the extraordinary result of rapid fibre Bragg grating inscription in doped polymer optical fibres based on polymethyl methacrylate in only 7 ms,which is two orders of magnitude faster than the inscription times previously reported.This was achieved using a new dopant material,diphenyl disulphide,which was found to enable a fast,positive refractive index change using a low ultraviolet dose.These changes were investigated and found to arise from photodissociation of the diphenyl disulphide molecule and subsequent molecular reorganization.We demonstrate that gratings inscribed in these fibres can exhibit at least a 15 times higher sensitivity than silica glass fibre,despite their quick inscription times.As a demonstration of the sensitivity,we selected a highly stringent situation,namely,the monitoring of a human heartbeat and respiratory functions.These findings could permit the inscription of fibre Bragg gratings during the fibre drawing process for mass production,allowing costeffective,single-use,in vivo sensors among other potential uses.

红树林是分布于热带、亚热带潮间带的典型滨海生态系统。近年来,随着城市化和工业化的发展,滨海生态系统受重金属(例如铅、锌、铜等)的污染越来越严重,我国南方一些红树林底泥中的重金属浓度已达到甚或超过重度污染标准。由于沉积作用,红树林底泥被认为是一个能积累由潮水和河流淡水携带来的重金属的"库"。然而,红树植物具有很强的耐性生长于重度污染的底泥, 但其中的机理目前尚不清楚。由于长期被水淹没,红树林底泥是一个具氧化还原势低,还原性毒性物质(如 Fe2+、 Mn2+、 H2S、 CH4等)积累多,营养物质缺乏等特征的厌氧环境。为了适应这种生境,红树植物也进化出了一套与其他湿地植物类似的适应机制,植物能通过通气组织将地上部分的氧气输送到地下,一部分满足根的呼吸作用需要,一部分则通过根释放到根际,这被称为根的泌氧。根的泌氧可以氧化根际环境并且氧化还原性的毒性物质,以保证红树植物根免受毒害而延长生长。因此,根际泌氧是红树植物能适应生境的一个重要机理。本研究试图揭示红树植物在长期适应生境的过程中已经进化和发展出一系列形态解剖和生理生化特征是否在耐浸水的土壤条件,解除Fe2+、 Mn2+ 等元素的毒性同时,是否也能解除其他重金属(铅、锌、铜)的毒性。通过对木榄、桐花和白骨壤三种不同泌氧能力的植物进行8周室内砂培试验发现:(1)三种植物的生长都被铅、锌、铜所抑制;(2)三种植物对铅、锌、铜都具有一定的耐性,然而,泌氧能力较弱的木榄比泌氧能力较强的桐花和白骨壤对铅、锌、铜的耐性高。

香港房屋委员会(香港房委会)是一个法定机构,负责为无力负担私营楼宇的人士提供可负担的优质居所。在香港的700万人口中,大约30%的市民居住在公营租住房屋中,另有15%的市民居住在房委会提供的资助出售单位中。目前,我们的公共租住屋邨内共有约72万个居住单位。为满足公营房屋日益增长的需求,按照现时逐年延展的五年计划,我们平均每年新建1.5万套租住单位。面对严峻的土地、社区和环境的限制,我们竭力实现公营房屋建设量的目标,同时我们从未放弃公营房屋既定的可持续发展的质量指标,包括在和谐社区中提供安全、绿色和健康宜居的家园,开发实而不华、环境友好及以人为本的屋邨。过去十年间,我们在规划设计阶段逐步开发及实施了一系列新措施和工具,为居民营造优质居住环境。这些实践经验值得在规划行业内总结推广,从而鼓励后续更多改善。本文介绍香港房委会在可行性研究、总体布局规划、方案设计等阶段推行的新措施,涵盖了房委会使用的可持续规划设计方法,以应对香港公众对公营房屋优质居住环境日益提升的期望。同时,香港房委会亦与地方社区紧密合作,共同营造和谐社会氛围。总之,公营房屋已成为香港繁荣稳定的基石,以及超过半个世纪以来香港公共行政的支柱。

Forecasting Compensatory Control (FCC) has been successfully employed to improve the machine performance in various machining operations. This low-cost approach is based on on-line stochastic modeling and error compensation. The degree of error compensation depends very much on the accuracy of the modeling technique which can only be performed on-line in a real-time recursive manner. In this study, the effect of the control input, i.e. the cutting force, is considered in the development of error models, and the formulation of recursive eXogeneous Autoregressive Moving Average (ARMAX) models becomes necessary. The paper describes the methodology for developing the 2-D ARMAX models to represent the workpiece longitudinal and radial errors in the machine turning process. The parameters are estimated on-line by means of the Recursive Least Square (RLS) method. Evaluation of the effectiveness of using ARMAX models in error forecasting is made using the time series obtained from the experimental machine. Analysis shows that ARMAX (1,2,1) with forgetting factor of 0.99 gives acceptable results for this lathe turning machine.

目的探討澳門地區健康成人肺通氣功能特點,建立適合本澳健康成人的肺通氣功能預計值公式和正常參考值範圍。方法2011~2012年通過宣傳招募到387例無吸煙史的本澳健康成年華人,通過詢問病史、行心電圖、胸片等檢查,最終362例符合條件納入研究。對362例納入者行肺通氣功能檢測,指標包括FEV1、FVC、FEV1/FVC等,將所得的實測值分別與年齡(A)、身高(H)、體重(W)等行相關分析,同時進行多元逐步線性回歸分析,得出預計值方程式;並與臨近地區預計值進行對比。結果建立了華人的FEV1、FVC、FEV1/FVC的預計值公式;通過與其它地區預計值對比發現,FEV1%Pred,FVC%Pred的正常參考值≥80%,而FEV1/FVC%實測值的正常參考值≥72%,若取FEV1/FVC實測值佔預計值的百分比則女性≥84%,男性≥91%更適合本澳華人人群。結論新建立的肺通氣功能預計值公式及正常參考值範圍更適合澳門人群,建議推廣應用。

Floor drains in processing environments harbor Listeria spp. due to continuous presence of humidity and organic substrates. Cleaning and washing activities in food-processing facilities can translocate the bacterial cells from the drain to the surrounding environment, thus contaminating food products still in production. This study evaluated the potential for translocation of Listeria monocytogenes from drains to food contact surfaces in the surrounding environment using Listeria innocua as a surrogate. A 7 × 7 × 8-foot polycarbonate flexi-glass chamber with a 10-inch-diameter drain mounted on an aluminum cabinet was used. Stainless steel coupons (6.4 × 1.9 × 0.1 cm, 12 per height) were hung at 1, 3, and 5 feet inside the chamber. Four treatment sets;non-inoculated, non-treated;non-inoculated, treated;inoculated, treated;inoculated non-treated;and two subtreatments of 8 h and 48 h were performed. For the inoculated sets, meat slurry (10 gof ground beef in 900 mL water) and a four-strain cocktail of Listeria innocua at 7 - 8 log CFU/mL were used. For the treated sets, in addition, a commercial cleaner and sanitizer was applied. The drain was cleaned using a pressure hose (40 - 50 psi) after 8 h and 48 h. Coupons were then removed and enriched in listeria enrichment broth to establish if any cell translocated from the drain onto the stainless steel coupons via aerosols generated during washing. Confirmation was done using VIP Listeria rapid test kits. Results indicated translocation at all three heights ranging from 2% - 25%. Significantly higher translocation (p Listeria spp. from drains to food contact surfaces does occur and increases with increased proximity to the drain.
