M-BCJR Algorithm with Channel Shortening Based on Ungerboeck Observation Model for Faster-than-Nyquist Signaling

The M-BCJR algorithm based on the Ungerboeck observation model is a recent study to reduce the computational complexity for faster-than-Nyquist(FTN)signaling[1].In this paper,we propose a method that can further reduce the complexity with the approximately same or better bit error rate(BER)performance compared to[1].The information rate(IR)loss for the proposed method is less than 1%compared to the true achievable IR(AIR).The proposed improvement is mainly by introducing channel shortening(CS)before the M-BCJR *** our proposal,the Ungerboeck M-BCJR algorithm and CS can work together to defeat severe inter-symbol interference(ISI)introduced by FTN *** ISI length for the M-BCJR algorithm with CS is optimized based on the criterion of the IR *** the two cases=0.5 and=0.35,compared to Ungerboeck M-BCJR without CS benchmark[1],the computational complexities of Ungerboeck M-BCJR with CS are reduced by 75%.Moreover,for the case=0.35,the BER performance of Ungerboeck M-BCJR with CS outperforms that of the conventional M-BCJR in[1]at the low signal to noise ratio region.

~ AIM： To study the effects of curcumin on the secretion of interleukin （IL） -6 and IL-8 by corneal limbus epithelial cells. METHODS： Human corneal Iimbus epithelial cells were isolated and cultured from donor eyes and irradiated by UVB at different dosages with or without curcumin. MTT test was used for studying the effects of UVB and curcumin on the cell viability. The role of mitogen-activated protein kinase （MAPK） and nuclear factor-kappa B （NF-KB） pathways on the UVB-induced secretion of IL.6 and IL-8 were tested by addition of their inhibitors to the culture with or without UVB-radiation. Levels of various signal pathways, IL-6 and IL-8 in the cells and in the conditioned culture medium were measured by ELISA analysis. RESULTS： UVB at 20 mJ/cm2 or less and curcumin at 20 IJmol/L or less did not affect the cell viability of culturedlimbus epithelial cells （P〉0.05）. UVB irradiation at 10 and 20 mJ/cm2 induced a significant increase of secretion of IL-6 and IL-8 and upregulated NF-KB and phosphorylated MAPK pathways of cultured limbus epithelial cells （P〈0.05）. Various signal pathway inhibitors, including SP600125 （JNK inhibitor）, SB203580 （p38 MAPK inhibitor） and BAY11-7082 （NF-KB inhibitor） significantly decreased the UVB-induced secretion of IL-6 and IL-8 secretion （P〈0.05）. Curcumin at 5-20 pmol/L significantly inhibited UVB- induced secretion of IL-6 and IL-8 by limbus epithelial cells in a dose-dependent manner; while curcumin alone did not affect the secretion of IL-6 and IL-8. The upregulation of NF-KB and MAPK pathways induced by UVB treatment was significantly inhibited by curcumin, suggesting that NF-KB and MAPK pathways are involved in the inhibitory effect of curcumin on UVB-induced production of IL-6 and IL-8.

High-throughput short-read sequencing of exomes and whole cancer genomes in multiple human hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)cohorts confirmed previously identified frequently mutated somatic genes,such as TP53,CTNNB1 and AXIN1,and identified several novel genes with moderate mutation frequencies,including ARID1A,ARID2,MLL,MLL2,MLL3,MLL4,IRF2,ATM,CDKN2A,FGF19,PIK3CA,RPS6KA3,JAK1,KEAP1,NFE2L2,C16orf62,LEPR,RAC2,and *** classification of these mutated genes suggested that alterations in pathways participating in chromatin remodeling,Wnt/β-catenin signaling,JAK/STAT signaling,and oxidative stress play critical roles in HCC ***,because there are few druggable genes used in HCC therapy,the identification of new therapeutic targets through integrated genomic approaches remains an important *** a large amount of HCC genomic data genotyped by high density single nucleotide polymorphism arrays is deposited in the public domain,copy number alteration(CNA)analyses of these arrays is a cost-effective way to reveal target genes through profiling of recurrent and overlapping amplicons,homozygous deletions and potentially unbalanced chromosomal translocations accumulated during HCC ***,integration of CNAs with other high-throughput genomic data,such as aberrantly coding transcriptomes and non-coding gene expression in human HCC tissues and rodent HCC models,provides lines of evidence that can be used to facilitate the identification of novel HCC target genes with the potential of improving the survival of HCC patients.

The lattice Boltzmann method （LBM） has gained increasing popularity in the last two decades as an alternative numerical approach for solving fluid flow problems. One of the most active research areas in the LBM is its application in particle-fluid systems, where the advantage of the LBM in efficiency and parallel scalability has made it superior to many other direct numerical simulation （DNS） techniques. This article intends to provide a brief review of the application of the LBM in particle-fluid systems. The numerical techniques in the LBM pertaining to simulations of particles are discussed, with emphasis on the advanced treatment for boundary conditions on the particle-fluid interface. Other numerical issues, such as the effect of the internal fluid, are also briefly described. Additionally, recent efforts in using the LBM to obtain closures for particle-fluid drag force are also reviewed.

AIM： To compare the efficacy and toxicity of a three-step combination therapy with post-operative radiation alone for locally advanced esophageal cancer.METHODS： Patients with T3-4 and N0-1 esophageal carcinoma from a number of institutions were non-randomly, prospectively enrolled in the study. All patients underwent single-stage curative en bloc esophagectomy. The patients were then assigned into one of two treatment groups based on treatment consisting of either post-operative concurrent chemoradiotherapy （CCRT） with weekly cisplatin 30 mg/m^2 followed by systemic adjuvant chemotherapy （four monthly cycles of cisplatin 20 mg/m^2 and 5-fluorouracil 1 000 mg/m^2 for five consecutive days）, or, post-operative radiation alone. The radiotherapy dose was 55-60 Gy for all patients. Primary end-point of this study was to assess the per-protocol patients＇ improvement of overall survival benefit. Secondary end-point was designed to evaluate both the per-protocol and intent-totreat patients＇ outcome of survival. RESULTS： A total of 60 patients （n=30 per group） were enrolled in this study. The two groups were generally comparable for demographic characteristics and hematological and non-hematological toxicities. The CCRT with weekly cisplatin was well tolerated, with significantly better overall survival （30.9 mo vs 20.7 mo; 95% CI, 27.5-36.4 vs 15.2-26.1） and 3-year survival （70.0% vs 33.7%; P=0.003）. Low histological grade of tumor （P〈0.001） was associated with favorable survival in these locally advanced patients. CONCLUSION： For locally advanced esophageal cancer, the combination of esophagectomy, post-operative CCRT with weekly cisplatin and systemic adjuvant chemotherapy is well tolerated and effective. A large-scale, prospective randomized trial of this regimen is in progress.

Background:Pancreas transplantation remains the best long-term treatment option to achieve physiological euglycemia and insulin independence in patients with labile diabetes mellitus(DM).It is widely accepted as an optimal procedure for type 1 DM(T1DM),but its application in type 2 DM(T2DM)is not unanimously ***:In total,146 diabetes patients undergoing pancreas transplantation were included in this *** data and outcomes were compared between the T1DM and T2DM ***:Majority(93%)of the pancreas transplantations in T2DM were for uremic *** occurred in 106(73%)patients,including 70(48%)with early complications before discharge and 79(54%)with late complications during follow-up ***,rejection of pancreas graft occurred in 37(25%)*** rejection rate in T2DM recipients was significantly lower than that in *** short-and long-term outcomes for endocrine function in terms of fasting blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c levels and graft survival rates are comparable between the T2DM and T1DM ***:T2DM is not inferior to T1DM after pancreas transplantation in terms of surgical risks,immunological and endocrine outcomes,and graft survival ***,pancreas transplantation could be an effective option to treat selected uremic T2DM patients without significant insulin resistance.

This paper reports a new genus and a new species Microprobelus liuae gen. et sp. nov. referred to the family Belidae. This fossil was collected from the Late Jurassic Yixian Formation of western Liaoning, China. Detailed description and illustration of the specimen along with a brief review of fossil belids are given. And the age of the Yixian Formation and the early diversification of the weevils are discussed.

Rock bolt anchorage performance is crucial for tunnel support *** investigate the mechanical behaviour of reinforced rock and the bolts that reinforce it from the micro-scale to the *** pull-out tests were performed on soft rock using the distinct element method,in which a new contact model that considers bond size,is employed to constrain the main rock mechanical *** minimum sample width and height values for which the boundary effect can be neglected are first proposed through numerous tests on the influence of sample size on peak load and bond *** influence of sample width is substantially greater than that of sample *** then select an appropriate sample size to study the influence of bolt embedment length and confining pressure on the mechanical behaviours of the rock and *** results show that increased rock bolt embedment length and confining pressure can increase the peak load;however,the bolt length effect is limited when exceeding the critical anchorage *** cases without confining pressure,bond breakage occurs in the rock around the grout-rock interface and the breakage zone is rectangular,whereas in cases under confining pressure,the breakage zone presents an inverted cone *** use our results to discuss the influence of bond strength at the bolt-grout interface on the peak load and failure *** failure mode changes gradually from complex failure to single failure along the bolt-grout interface with decreasing interfacial bond strength.
