Liu-stain quick cytodiagnosis of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration in diagnosis of liver tumors

AIM： To combine ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration （US-FNA） and Liu （Riu） stain to make a quick study on liver tumor lesions. METHODS： Two hundred and twenty-eight aspirations from 232 patients were completely studied. The operator himself made the quick cytodiagnosis of US-FNA smear stained by Liu method within thirty minutes. The US-FNA specimen was also sent to the pathological department for cytological study and cellblock histology. The result of our Uu-stain quick cytodiagnosis in each patient was confirmed by the final cytopathological diagnosis from pathological report. RESULTS： Among 228 samples, the quick cytodiagnosis revealed 146 malignancies, 81 benign lesions and one inadequate specimen. Cytopathological diagnosis from the pathological department revealed 150 malignancies, and 78 benign lesions. Four well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinomas （HCCs） were under-diagnosed by quick cytodiagnosis as benign and 3 benign lesions were over-diagnosed as well-differentiated HCCs. Compared with cytopathological diagnosis, quick cytodiagnosis correctly diagnosed 143 malignancies and 77 benign lesions. Except for the one inadequate specimen in quick cytodiagnosis, the accuracy of quick cytodiagnosis was 96.9% （220/227）, and its sensitivity, specificity and positive and negative predictive values were 97.9%, 95.1%, 97.3% and 96.3%, respectively. CONCLUSION： Liu-stain quick cytodiagnosis is a fast, convenient, safe and effective method for hepatologists in clinic practice to diagnose liver tumor. In few cases of well-differentiated HCC, Liu-stain quick cytodiagnosis has its limitation.

Influence of Dark Energy on Gravitational Time Delay

We investigate the gravitational time delay of light in the Schwarzschild black hole space-time surroundedby *** the analysis and numerical methods,we find that the gravitational time delay of light in theSchwarzschild black hole space-time surrounded by quintessence increases when the normalization factor c increases,andthat the gravitational time delay also decreases when the quintessential state parameter ω_q increases.

Crystal structure of β-cyclodextrin-4-chlorobenzoic acid complex:Unusual C-Cl…π interaction between 4-chlorobenzoic acids in β-cyclodextrin dimer

The inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin （β-CD） with 4-chlorobenzoic acid was synthesized and its crystal structure was determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction under cryogenic condition. The complex contains two β-CDs, two 4-chlorobenzoic acids and twenty-nine water molecules in the asymmetric unit, and can be formulated as 2（C42H70O35）·2（CTH5O2Cl）·29（H2O）. In the crystal lattice, two β-CDs form a face-to-face dimer jointed together through hydrogen bonding between the secondary hydroxyl groups of β--CDs. Two 4-chlorobenzoic acid molecules which contact by C-Cl…π interactions are included in the β-CD dimer cavity. The β-CD dimers are arranged in brickwork-like pattern along the crystallographic a-axis. The effect of guest molecule length on the inclusion geometry was discussed by comparative study of some fl-CD complexes containing similar guests.

Identifying Brand Consistency by Product Differentiation Using CNN

This paper presents a new method of using a convolutional neural network(CNN)in machine learning to identify brand consistency by product appearance *** Experiment 1,we collected fifty mouse devices from the past thirty-five years from a renowned company to build a dataset consisting of product pictures with pre-defined design features of their appearance and *** show that it is a challenge to distinguish periods for the subtle evolution of themouse devices with such traditionalmethods as time series analysis and principal component analysis(PCA).In Experiment 2,we applied deep learning to predict the extent to which the product appearance variation ofmouse devices of various *** investigation collected 6,042 images ofmouse devices and divided theminto the Early Stage and the Late *** show the highest accuracy of 81.4%with the CNNmodel,and the evaluation score of brand style consistency is 0.36,implying that the brand consistency score converted by the CNN accuracy rate is not always perfect in the real *** relationship between product appearance variation,brand style consistency,and evaluation score is beneficial for predicting new product styles and future product style *** addition,the CNN heat maps highlight the critical areas of design features of different styles,providing alternative clues related to the blurred *** study provides insights into practical problems for designers,manufacturers,and marketers in product *** not only contributes to the scientific understanding of design development,but also provides industry professionals with practical tools and methods to improve the design process and maintain brand *** can use these techniques to find features that influence brand ***,capture these features as innovative design elements and maintain core brand values.

Sediment removal efficiency of siphon dredging with wedge-type suction head and float tank

Siphon dredging with a float tank and different siphon suction heads, including the plain-type and wedge-type with/without side holes, through flume experiments were used to investigate the reservoir sediment removal efficiency. The experiment revealed maximum suction pressure and velocity when the distance from the suction head to the bed was about 25% of suction head diameter. Suction pressure decreased rapidly as the distance from the suction head to the bed increased to 50% and 100% of suction head diameter. Suction pressure achieved by wedge-type suction head was only 16.9-17.6% of that around plain-type suction head, and the velocity around wedge-type suction head was 64.7-68.4% of that around plain-type suction head. However the plain-type suction head was easily clogged doe to its long bobbing period. The average bobbing period for the plain-type suction head was about 105-263% that of the wedge-type suction head. The sediment removal efficiency was achieved when float tank diameter was 3-4 times that of the suction head. Flow discharge and sediment removal increased as the suction head diameter and side hole diameter increased, respectively. The most efficient side hole area was an area within 15% of suction head area. Totally, the optimal sediment removal efficiency was the wedge angle of 20° with 3 side holes. The efficiency of sediment dredging by siphon suction with a suction tube passing through the dam bottom was better than that with suction passing over the top of the dam. The wedge-type siphon suction with a float tank is preferable for sediment dredging in small reservoirs because it is inexpensive and efficient.

The Mechanistic Studies of Acupuncture and Moxibustion in Taiwan

Traditional Chinese acupuncture has a history of over 2500 years. It is effective in the treatment of many conditions with few side effects. The best known mechanism is via endogenous opiates and their receptors. In addition to opioids, researchers have focused on the role of central monoamimergic systems. Acupuncture therapy is used not only to relieve pain but also to treat various medical conditions in traditional Chinese medicine （TCM）. Some experiments have revealed a relationship between acupuncture and the autonomic nervous system （ANS）. Besides, electroacupuncture （EA） can modulate the imbalance between innate and acquired immune systems. This review is focusing on the mechanistic studies of acupuncture that my colleagues and I have performed in Taiwan in recent years. We found that EA analgesia was closely related to not only the serotonergic neurons but also the adrenergic neurons in the central nervous system. The electrophysiological recordings suggested the involvement of the cerebral cortex in acupuncture. Local somatothermal stimulation inhibited the motility of sphincter of Oddi and internal anal sphincter through nitrergic neural release of nitric oxide. Mild local heat stress upregulated hepatic gene expression of heat shock protein 70 and protected the liver from subsequent ischemia- reperfusion injury. These studies supplement the knowledge of the mechanism of acupuncture.

AIM:To investigate the etiology of esophageal cancer among Taiwan Residents ***:This is a multi-center,hospital-based,case-control *** patients consisted of women who were newly diagnosed and pathology-proven to have esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC) from three large medical centers(one from Northern and two from Southern Taiwan,respectively)between August 2000 and December *** ESCC patient was matched with 4 healthy women based on age(within 3 years)and hospital of origin,from the Department of Preventive Medicine in each hospital.A total of 51 case patients and 204 controls,all women,were ***:Frequencies of smokers and drinkers among ESCC patients were 19.6%and 21.6%,respectively,which were significantly higher than smokers(4.4%) and drinkers(4.4%)among controls(OR=4.07,95%CI:1.36-12.16,P=0.01;OR=3.55,95%CI:1.03-12.27,P=0.04).Women who drank an amount of alcohol more than 158 g per week had a 20.58-fold greater risk(95%CI:1.72-245.62,P=0.02)of ESCC than those who never drank alcohol after adjusting for other covariates,although the sample size was ***:Cigarette smoking and alcohol drinking,especially heavy drinking,are the major risks for developing ESCC in Taiwan Residents women.

Multi-scale variability of the tropical Indian Ocean circulation system revealed by recent observations

The tropical Indian Ocean circulation system includes the equatorial and near-equatorial circulations, the marginal sea circulation, and eddies. The dynamic processes of these circulation systems show significant multi-scale variability associated with the Indian Monsoon and the Indian Ocean dipole. This paper summarizes the research progress over recent years on the tropical Indian Ocean circulation system based on the large-scale hydrological observations and numerical simulations by the South China Sea Institute of Oceanology(SCSIO), Chinese Academy of Sciences. Results show that:(1) the wind-driven Kelvin and Rossby waves and eastern boundary-reflected Rossby waves regulate the formation and evolution of the Equatorial Undercurrent and the Equatorial Intermediate Current;(2) the equatorial wind-driven dynamics are the main factor controlling the inter-annual variability of the thermocline in the eastern Indian Ocean upwelling;(3) the equatorial waves transport large amounts of energy into the Bay of Bengal in forms of coastal Kelvin and reflected free Rossby waves. Several unresolved issues within the tropical Indian Ocean are discussed:(i) the potential effects of the momentum balance and the basin resonance on the variability of the equatorial circulation system, and(ii) the potential contribution of wind-driven dynamics to the life cycle of the eastern Indian Ocean upwelling. This paper also briefly introduces the international Indian Ocean investigation project of the SCSIO, which will advance the study of the multi-scale variability of the tropical Indian Ocean circulation system, and provide a theoretical and data basis to support marine environmental security for the countries around the Maritime Silk Road.

Activation of phagocytosis by immune checkpoint blockade

Inhibition of macrophage-mediated phagocytosis has emerged as an essential mechanism for tumor immune evasion. One mechanism inhibiting the innate response is the presence of the macrophage inhibitory molecule, signal regulatory protein-a （SIRPa）, on tumor-associated macrophages （TAMs） and its cognate ligand cluster of differentiation 47 （CD47） on tumor cells in the tumor microenvironment. On the basis of a recently discovered programmed death protein 1 （PD-1） in TAMs, we discuss the potential inhibitory receptors that possess new functions beyond T cell exhaustion in this review. As more and more immune receptors are found to be expressed on TAMs, the corresponding therapies may also stimulate macrophages for phagocytosis and thereby provide extra anti-tumor benefits in cancer therapy. Therefore, identification of biomarkers and combinatorial therapeutic strategies, have the potential to improve the efficacy and safety profiles of current immunotherapies.

Effects of Social Capital,Top Executive Attributes and R&D on Firm Value in Chinese Small and Medium-sized Enterprises

This study uses an unbalanced panel data analysis to examine the effects of social capital, top executive attributes and R ＆D on firm value in Chinese small and medium-sized enterprises （SMEs） listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange Small and Medium-sized Enterprises Board from 2007 to 2011. There are several interesting findings. First, the gender （male） and academic degree of the chairperson in the SMEs have a positive and significant effect on firm value. Second, social capital （measured by politieal connections, managerial business association networks and technology association networks） and R＆D have a positive effect on SME firm value. Third, the effect of politieal connections on firm value for state-owned enterprises （SOEs） is stronger than for non-SOEs, while the effect of business and technology networks on firm value for non-SOEs is stronger than for SOEs. Our study has important policy implications for SMEs that want to compete successfully in China.
