Feeding behavior and hormoligosis associated with imidacloprid resistance in Asian citrus psyllid,Diaphorina citri

Imidacloprid is a neonicotinoid insecticide used for managing the Asian citrus psyllid,Diaphorina citri Kuwayama,which serves as vector of phytopathogens causing citrus ***,development of resistance to neonicotinoids among populations of *** has coincided with occasional control failures in the *** objectives of this research were to(1)survey current levels of imidacloprid resistance in Florida citrus;(2)compare feeding behavior between imidacloprid-resistant and susceptible *** using electrical penetration graph recordings,and(3)investigate the possible amplification of insecticide hormoligosis associated with *** surveys confirmed that the susceptibility of *** populations to imidacloprid has decreased in commercial Florida citrus groves compared with a laboratory-susceptible *** 12 generations of selection,resistance to imidacloprid increased by 438 fold compared with the susceptible ***-susceptible *** feeding on citrus exhibited significantly more bouts associated with intercellular pathway(C),phloem penetration(D),phloem salivation(E1),and nonprobing(Np)activities than imidacloprid-resistant ***,there were no differences observed in the frequency or duration of phloem ingestion or xylem feeding between susceptible and resistant *** was no statistical difference in fecundity between resistant and susceptible ***,the fecundity of imidacloprid-susceptible female *** treated with a sublethal concentration of imidacloprid(LC_(25))increased significantly compared with controls,while such hormoligosis was less pronounced among imidacloprid-resistant *** results suggest that imidacloprid-resistant psyllids may cease feeding sooner than susceptible counterparts following sublethal exposure to this insecticide,indicative of a behavioral resistance mechanism.

Comparative transcriptome analysis of thiamethoxam susceptible and resistant Asian citrus psyllid,Diaphorina citri(Hemiptera:Liviidae),using RNA-sequencing

Asian citrus psyllid,Diaphorina citri Kuwayama(Hemiptera:Liviidae),transmits the causal pathogen of huanglongbing and is a global pest of *** populations exhibit resistance to multiple insecticide modes of action in areas where these chemicals have been *** performed genome-wide transcriptional analysis for two field populations of ***(Wauchula and Lake Alfred,Florida,USA)that exhibit 1300-fold resistance to the neonicotinoid insecticide,thiamethoxam,and compared it to that of susceptible psyllids collected from the same area and without imposed *** Lake Alfred population responded to insecticide resistance by up-regulation of 240 genes and down-regulation of 148 *** Wauchula population exhibited similar patterns to the Lake Alfred population with up-regulation of 253 genes and down-regulation of 115 *** Ontology annotation associated with cellular processes,cell,and catalytic activity were assigned to differentially expressed genes(DEGs).The DEGs from Lake Alfred and Wauchula populations were mapped to Kyoto Encyclopedia of Gene and Genomes pathways and implicated enrichment of metabolic pathways,oxidative phosphorylation,extracellular matrix-receptor interaction,terpenoid backbone biosynthesis,and insect hormone biosynthesis in the resistant populations,lip-regulation of 60s ribo-somal proteins,UDP-gluscoyltransferases,cytochrome c oxidases,and CYP and ABC transporters among thiamethoxam-resistant *** implicates a broad array of novel and conventionally understood resistance mechanisms.

Objective: Adults and children in rural settings are at greater risk for overweight and obesity than those in urban settings. Multiple studies have suggested that quality of life is lower for obese individuals. This study addresses the association of obesity with health-related Quality of Life (QOL) among youth in the rural Mississippi Delta. Methods: QOL data on children aged 3 - 17 years using the PedsQL were collected as part of a cross-sectional telephone survey in the Delta. Weight was grouped by AAP categorizations as underweight, normal, overweight (85 - 95th BMI percentile), obese (95 - 97th percentile), and extremely obese (> 97th percentile). Results: 437 youth participated. Multiple linear regression models were used to predict PedsQL component scores. Results showed main effects for age (p = 0.006), race (p er children ages 9 - 17, white and black children, and obese or extremely obese children scored lower on psychosocial QOL than younger children, other race, and non- obese. A strong age by weight group interaction (p = 0.014) showed that obesity and extreme obesity was associated with lower scores on psychosocial QOL only for older children ages 12 - 17. Conclusions: Investigating the QOL in this rural community where the majority of adults and children are obese aids in our understanding the relationship between sociocultural factors and HRQOL. In the context of an obese majority obesity and extreme obesity remain important contributions to reduced psychosocial (emotional, social, school performance) quality of life for adolescents but not for younger children).
