Association of serum lipid levels with diabetic retinopathy

AIM: To assess the association between serum lipids and diabetic retinopathy (DR). · METHODS: Sixty -one diabetic patients without retinopathy (NDR), 55 diabetic patients with non - proliferative retinopathy (NPDR) and 75 diabetic patients with proliferative retinopathy (PDR) according to ETDRS grading scale were enrolled in this study. Total cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL), low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL) and triglyceride values were compared between the groups. ·RESULTS: The groups were well-balanced in terms of age and gender (P =0.071, P =0.265 respectively). The mean HbA1c values were significantly lower in NDR group than the NPDR and PDR groups(P =0.004, P =0.009 respectively). Mean total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, HDL and VLDL levels were not significantly different between the groups (P =0.693, P =0.774, P =0.644, P = 0.910 and P =0.967 respectively, one way ANOVA). Mean total cholesterol, triglyceride, LDL, HDL and VLDL levels were not significantly different between the patients with ME and patients without ME(P =0.622, P =0.113, P =0.955, P =0.735 and P =0.490 respectively, t -test). The mean blood glucose significantly correlated with total cholesterol (r =0.173, P =0.017) and LDL (r =0.190, P = 0.008). The mean HbA1c significantly correlated with total cholesterol (r =0.158, P =0.030) and triglyceride (r =0.148, P =0.042). ·CONCLUSION: Serum lipid levels were not significantly associated with the severity of DR or existence of ME despite the significant correlation between the mean blood glucose, HbA1c and total cholesterol.

Investigation of the Acceptability of Cultured Meat in University Students

Background: Over the past 20 years, cultured meat has drawn a lot of public attention as a potential solution to issues with animal husbandry, including inadequate use of natural sources, improper animal welfare practices, and possible risks to public health and safety. The novel method of producing meat through culture reduces the need for animals to produce muscle fiber, thereby obviating the necessity for animal slaughter. Apart from its ethical advantages, cultured meat presents a possible way to fulfill the expanding need for food among growing populations. The purpose of this research was to find out whether Turkish students would be willing to pay for and accept cultured meat. Technique: Method: 371 university students who willingly consented to fill out a questionnaire and provide demographic data make up the research sample. Questions from previous studies on the acceptability of cultured meat were compiled to create the survey. The research’s data collection took place in March and April of 2022. The research was completed in June 2022 after the data had been processed and analyzed. Results: The results showed that the majority of participants were female and had omnivorous eating habits. Based on the results of the Bonferroni correction test, students with a higher intention to purchase and consume cultured meat were those who received economics and business education. Students with two years of university education had a higher overall survey score than those with four years of education (p < 0.05). Furthermore, it is discovered that there is a negative correlation between the participants’ ages and their Factor 2 (using cultured meat as an alternative to industrial meat) and Factor 3 (consuming and purchasing it) section points (r = -109, p = 0.036) (r = -0.121, p = 0.019). In conclusion, university students generally have a negative outlook on health-related issues, such as eating cultured meat as an alternative.

Background:Fever of unknown origin(FUO)in developing countries is an important dilemma and further research is needed to elucidate the infectious causes of ***:A multi-center study for infectious causes of FUO in lower middle-income countries(LMIC)and lowincome countries(LIC)was conducted between January 1,2018 and January 1,*** total,15 participating centers from seven different countries provided the data,which were collected through the Infectious DiseasesInternational Research Initiative *** adult patients with confirmed infection as the cause of FUO were included in the *** severity parameters were quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(qSOFA)≥2,intensive care unit(ICU)admission,vasopressor use,and invasive mechanical ventilation(IMV).Results:A total of 160 patients with infectious FUO were included in the ***,148(92.5%)patients had community-acquired infections and 12(7.5%)had hospital-acquired *** most common infectious syndromes were tuberculosis(TB)(n=27,16.9%),infective endocarditis(n=25,15.6%),malaria(n=21,13.1%),brucellosis(n=15,9.4%),and typhoid fever(n=9,5.6%).Plasmodium falciparum,Mycobacterium tuberculosis,Brucellae,Staphylococcus aureus,Salmonella typhi,and Rickettsiae were the leading infectious agents in this study.A total of 56(35.0%)cases had invasive procedures for *** mean qSOFA score was 0.76±0.94{median(interquartile range[IQR]):0(0–1)}.ICU admission(n=26,16.2%),vasopressor use(n=14,8.8%),and IMV(n=10,6.3%)were not ***,38(23.8%)patients had at least one of the severity *** mortality rate was 15(9.4%),and the mortality was attributable to the infection causing FUO in 12(7.5%)***:In LMIC and LIC,tuberculosis and cardiac infections were the most severe and the leading infections causing FUO.

Determination and evaluation of biogas and methane productions of vegetable and fruit wastes with Hohenheim Batch Test method

Nowadays,biogas technology applications are gradually increasing worldwide due to the economic and environmental *** researches and studies related to the determination of the biogas potential of organic waste materials have been carried out in the recent *** to determine the specific methane potential of organic waste materials have a great importance for both design and economical operation of the biogas *** potential that will be recovered from organic wastes is substantial in *** to biogas plants gathering vegetable-fruit wastes and other organic wastes are planned to produce significant amount of renewable energy in Turkish *** to the use of organic wastes,the disposal of waste as well as energy production,soil,water and air pollution in terms of environmental protection are also *** the other hand,the organic wastes produced from plants can also be utilized as fertilizer in vegetable *** this study,the cumulative biogas and methane production of vegetable and fruit wastes were experimentally determined with HBT(Hohenheim Batch Test)*** and methane yields of vegetable and fruit wastes were found as 0.54-0.73 Nm^(3)/(kg ODM)and 0.29-0.37 Nm^(3)/(kg ODM),*** highest value of the cumulative specific methane production was tomato wastes(0.37 Nm^(3)/(kg ODM)),and the lowest value was lettuce wastes(0.29 Nm^(3)/(kg ODM)),as *** average cumulative specific methane production values of mixed vegetable and fruit wastes are determined as 0.34 Nm^(3)/(kg ODM).

Dynamic Responses of Block Type Quay Walls Under Cyclic Loading

The purpose of this research is to study the dynamic responses of gravity quay walls with block type consisting of“three blocks”*** this purpose,1g shaking table tests were conducted under different cyclic loadings for two different saturated granular backfill materials(Soil 1 and Soil 2).In this study,D_(n50) of Soil 1 and Soil 2 are selected as 2.2 cm and 1.0 cm,*** the experiments,accelerations,soil pressures and displacements were measured for each *** results pointed out that Soil 2 caused more damage on *** measurements for displacement and tilting of each block were discussed in view of“acceptable level of damage in performance-based design”given in PIANC(2001).The result of the study showed that the definitions of damaged levels given in PIANC(2001)were reliable for using in performance-based methods for seismic design of block type quay walls.

Spline regression modelling of PTO performance of tractor fuelled with different biodiesels

The objective of this study was to investigate the possibility of fitting spline regression models for power take-off(PTO)performance characteristics of an agricultural tractor tested with four different fuels,including diesel fuel(B0)and three biodiesel blends made of canola oil(B10:10%biodiesel+90%petro-diesel blend;B20:20%biodiesel+90%petro-diesel blend;B30:30%biodiesel+90%petro-diesel blend).The performance characteristics evaluated were PTO power,engine torque,engine fuel consumption,and specific fuel *** to sharp slopes in measured quantities around the nominal engine speed(2200 r/min),compared to the standard regression method,the spline regression models suited well to the experimental data with coefficient of determination R2=0.99 for PTO power and engine torque.R2 varied between 0.97 and 0.99 for fuel consumption and 0.91 and 0.95 for specific fuel *** weaker correlation found for specific fuel consumption could be attributed to profound fluctuations in measured data causing atypical pattern in the corresponding graphs around the nominal engine *** was concluded that splines were useful to accurately predict the measured PTO power and engine *** standard methods nor splines were sufficient to obtain very good regression models for specific fuel consumption.

Hardfacing coatings involve hard carbide/boride phases dispersed in a relatively soft steel *** the hardness measurements of hardfacing coatings,depending on the microstructure,both the hardness test method and the applied load affect the hardness results;therefore,they affect the wear performance predictions of the *** this reason,the proper hardness test method should be determined according to the microstructure of the coating,and the reliability of the obtained hardness data should be *** study aimed to determine the most suitable hardness test method for hypoeutectic and hypereutectic microstructures of hardfacing coatings by analyzing the reliability of Rockwell-C and Vickers hardness test *** analyses showed that Rockwell-C is not a suitable hardness test method for hypereutectic hardfacing *** on the relationship between wear resistance and hardness,Vickers hardness method was found more suitable for the considered materials.

Correlations between the Maximum Standard Uptake Value of Positron Emission Tomography/Computed Tomography and Laboratory Parameters before and after Treatment in Patients with Lymphoma

Background： After the first examination of patients with lymphoma diagnosis, important laboratory tests such as complete blood count; albumin, kidney and liver function tests; uric acid; 132-microglobulin; C-reactive protein （CRP）; erythrocyte sedimentation rate （ESR）; and lactate dehydrogenase （LDH） examinations are recommended. In this study, our aim was to find the relationship between laboratory parameters and the maximum standard uptake value （SUVmax） of positron emission tomography/computed tomography （PET/CT） in patients with lymphoma at the diagnosis and after treatment. Methods： Thirty-tbur lymphoma patients treated at Mustafa Kemal University Internal Medicine Clinic between 2014 and 2017 were included in this retrospective study. Results ofCRP, ESR, LDH, albumin, and white blood cell （WBC） count were recorded betbre each PET scan test, and each parameter was analyzed for correlation with SUV measurements. Results： Spearman＇s correlation test showed that the after-treatment SUV values were significantly correlated with the alter-treatment LDH, ESR, and CRP values （for LDH, ESR, and CRP, R2： 0.453, 0.426, and 0.351; P = 0.007, 0.012, and 0.042, respectively）. On the other hand, albumin and WBC count did not show a significant correlation with the after-treatment SUVmax values （all P 〉 0.05）. Conclusions： CRP, ESR, and LDH values may also be good predictors in patients for whom PET/CT imaging cannot be performed.

Shattering the castle walls: Anti-stromal therapy for pancreatic cancer

Despite the availability of potent chemotherapy regimens, such as 5-fluorouracil, folinic acid, irinotecan, and oxaliplatin(FOLFIRINOX) and nab-paclitaxel plus gemcitabine, treatment outcomes in metastatic pancreatic cancer(PC) remain unsatisfactory. The presence of an abundant fibrous stroma in PC is considered a crucial factor for its unfavorable condition. Apparently, stroma acts as a physical barrier to restrict intratumoral cytotoxic drug penetration and creates a hypoxic environment that reduces the efficacy of radiotherapy. In addition, stroma plays a vital supportive role in the development and progression of PC, which has prompted researchers to assess the potential benefits of agents targeting several cellular(e.g., stellate cells) and acellular(e.g., hyaluronan) elements of the stroma. This study aims to briefly review the primary structural properties of PC stroma and its interaction with cancer cells and summarize the current status of antistromal therapies in the management of metastatic PC.

Contemporary treatment approaches for metastatic colorectal cancer driven by BRAF V600 mutations

The treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer(mCRC)harboring BRAF V600 mutations is *** tumors are often refractory to standard ***,the patients may exhibit rapid clinical deterioration,depriving them of the chance to receive salvage *** newly diagnosed patients with good performance status,the administration of an intensive chemotherapy regimen like FOLFOXIRI(5-fluorouracil,leucovorin,oxaliplatin,and irinotecan)along with the antiangiogenic agent bevacizumab can modify this aggressive behavior of the disease and improve patient clinical *** recently published results of the BEACON(Binimetinib,Encorafenib,and Cetuximab Combined to Treat BRAF-Mutant Colorectal Cancer)study demonstrated that a combination therapy consisting of BRAF,epidermal growth factor receptor,and mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase inhibitors could be a useful second-or third-line *** review summarizes the current treatment strategies for BRAF-mutant mCRC.
