Chinese nurses’ perceived impact of international educational experiences and cultural beliefs following a 1-year study abroad program: an exploratory study

Objectives:To examine the perceived impact of international educational experiences and cultural beliefs before and after completing a 1-year Masters of Science in Nursing program.Methods:An exploratory study was conducted among Chinese nurses studying abroad in a private medium-sized university in the United States.The 27-item electronic pre-survey was administered within 1 week of starting the program and the post-survey was administered 1 year later at the completion of the program.Results:Majority of participants(n=25)were female,23–36 years of age.Findings revealed that the perceived impact of international educational experiences assessed at the start of the program was similar to the perceived impact measured at the end of the 1-year program,suggesting that the students learned and experienced what they anticipated.There was a significant impact on cultural beliefs from the start of the program compared with the end of the program suggesting that a 1-year study abroad program does influence cultural beliefs.Conclusions:Understanding what is important to provide in a study abroad program and providing the educational experiences identified by students as impactful are avenues to help host universities best develop their programs.Findings suggested that the 1-year program can influence foreign students’cultural beliefs,yet the professional and personal impact of this change warrants further study.

Lithium metal anodes are of great interest for advanced high-energy density batteries such as lithiumair, lithium-sulfur and solid-state batteries, due to their low electrode potential and ultra-high theoretical capacity. There are, however, several challenges limiting their practical applications, which include low coulombic efficiency, the uncontrollable growth of dendrites and poor rate capability. Here, a rational design of 3D structured lithium metal anodes comprising of in-situ growth of cobalt-decorated nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes on continuous carbon nanofibers is demonstrated via electrospinning.The porous and free-standing scaffold can enhance the tolerance to stresses resulting from the intrinsic volume change during Li plating/stripping, delivering a significant boost in both charge/discharge rates and stable cycling performance. A binary Co-Li alloying phase was generated at the initial discharge process, creating more active sites for the Li nucleation and uniform deposition. Characterization and density functional theory calculations show that the conductive and uniformly distributed cobalt-decorated carbon nanotubes with hierarchical structure can effectively reduce the local current density and more easily absorb Li atoms, leading to more uniform Li nucleation during plating. The current work presents an advance on scalable and cost-effective strategies for novel electrode materials with 3D hierarchical microstructures and mechanical flexibility for lithium metal anodes.

It is essential to develop new carriers for laryngeal drug delivery in light of the lack of therapy in laryngeal related diseases.When the inhalable micron-sized crystals ofγ-cyclodextrin metal-organic framework(CD-MOF)was utilized as dry powder inhalers(DPIs)carrier with high fine particle fraction(FPF),it was found in this research that the encapsulation of a glycoside compound,namely,scutellarin(SCU)in CD-MOF could significantly enhance its laryngeal deposition.Firstly,SCU loading into CD-MOF was optimized by incubation.Then,a series of characterizations were carried out to elucidate the mechanisms of drug loading.Finally,the laryngeal deposition rate of CD-MOF was 57.72±2.19%improved by SCU,about two times higher than that of CD-MOF,when it was determined by Next Generation Impactor(NGI)at 65 L/min.As a proof of concept,pharyngolaryngitis therapeutic agent dexamethasone(DEX)had improved laryngeal deposition after being co-encapsulated with SCU in CDMOF.The molecular simulation demonstrated the configuration of SCU in CD-MOF and its contribution to the free energy of the SCU@CD-MOF,which defined the enhanced laryngeal anchoring.In conclusion,the glycosides-like SCU could effectively enhance the anchoring of CD-MOF particles to the larynx to facilitate the treatment of laryngeal diseases.

Fingerprint analysis of placenta polypeptide injection by high performance liquid chromatography

Objective: To develop the representative fingerprint for the quality control of placenta polypeptide injection. Methods: The chromatographic separation was performed using a Phenomenex Gemini C18 column (250 mm 4.6 mm, 5 mm) maintained at 30 1C. 0.1% aqueous trifiuoroacetic acid (Solvent A) and acetonitrile contained 0.1% TFA (Solvent B) were used as mobile phase with a gradient elution. Detection wavelength was 280 nm with the sample injection volume of 50 mL; the fiow rate was 1.0 mL/min. The fingerprints of different samples were investigated by similarity analysis. Results: Nine peaks were identified as the characteristic common peaks. The similarities of the fingerprints of the 10 batches of samples were above 0.992. Conclusion: This method showed high precision and good repeatability, and provided the basis for the improvement of the quality control of placenta polypeptide injection.

Serum Amyloid A Protein: A Potential Biomarker Correlated With Clinical Stage of Lung Cancer

Objective To identify serum diagnosis or progression biomarkers in patients with lung cancer using protein chip profiling analysis. Method Profiling analysis was performed on 450 sera collected from 213 patients with lung cancer, 19 with pneumonia, 16 with pulmonary tuberculosis, 65 with laryngeal carcinoma, 55 with laryngopharyngeal carcinoma patients, and 82 normal individuals. A new strategy was developed to identify the biomarkers on chip by trypsin pre-digestion. Results Profiling analysis demonstrated that an 11.6kDa protein was significandy elevated in lung cancer patients, compared with the control groups （P〈0.001）. The level and percentage of 11.6kDa protein progressively increased with the clinical stages Ⅰ-Ⅳ and were also higher in patients with squamous cell carcinoma than in other subtypes. This biomarker could be decreased after operation or chemotherapy. On the other hand, 11.6kDa protein was also increased in 50% benign diseases of lung and 13% of other cancer controls. After trypsin pre-digestion, a set of new peptide biomarkers was noticed to appear only in the samples containing a 11.6kDa peak. Further identification showed that 2177Da was a fragment of serum amyloid A （SAA, MW 11.6kDa）. Two of the new peaks, 1550Da and 1611Da, were defined from the same protein by database searching. This result was further confirmed by partial purification of 11.6kDa protein and MS analysis. Conclusion SAA is a useful biomarker to monitor the progression of lung cancer and can directly identify some biomarkers on chip.

Background Mastery of laparoscopic skills and advances in technology have allowed a wide range of minimally invasive procedures to replace their open counterparts, including pancreatic surgery. The technique of distal pancreatectomy (resection of the pancreatic body and tail) has been well described, both with or without preservation of the spleen. However, to date we have not seen any reports about the laparoscopic resection for benign tumor localized in the neck of the pancreas with spleen preservation. This study was designed to present video of pure laparoscopic resection for benign tumor localized in the neck of the pancreas with spleen preservation. Methods A 20-year-old female presented to us with the chief complaint of dull pain in the upperabdomen for one month. CT scan disclosed a cyst-solid mass of 4.5×4 cm located in the neck and body of the pancreas, without infiltrating to surrounding tissue. The procedure began by using ultrasonic scalpel to divide the gastrocolic ligament to enter the lesser sac to allow for complete visualization of the distal pancreas, and the tumor was identified. The peritoneum overlying the superior and inferior margin of the pancreas was incised with the ultrasonic scalpel. Careful blunt dissection of the dorsal aspect of the neck of the pancreas was performed. To the right of the tumor, the pancreas was transected with the linear cutting stapler using a vascular cartridge. The dissection was continued in a way of medial-to-lateral of the pancreas. Individual branches of the splenic artery and vein were divided with the clips and ultrasonic scalpel until the distal pancreas was totally free. The specimen was placed in a bag, then retrieved through the 12-mm port which was enlarged slightly. Results The operation was completed in 150 minutes, and the blood loss was about 100ml. The patient recovered from the surgery smoothly, no postoperative complication occurred.
