Enhanced mechanical properties of LPSOp/Mg composites using super high pressure treatment

The super high pressure(SHP)technique was employed to fabricate the magnesium matrix composites(MMCs)reinforced with long-period stacking order structure powder(LPSOp)by cubic-anvil large-volume press with six *** LPSOp was optimized through high energy ball milling(HEBM)with a chemical composition of Mg85Zn6Y9(at%).The microstructure and mechanical properties of LPSOp/Mg composite was characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy(SEM/EDS),transmission electron microscopy(TEM),microhardness and compressive *** microhardness of LPSOp exhibits a notable increase after HEBM,and the thermal stability of LPSOp is affirmed through elevated *** SHPed LPSOp/Mg consists of Mg and LPSO *** annealing at 400℃for 1 h,the LPSO phase precipitates from solid solution of Mg and W phase is also *** strength of composites by SHP treatment and subsequently annealing is significantly improved compared with the pure Mg without LPSOp,which demonstrates the maximum compression yield strength(CYS)of 250 MPa and ultimate compression strength(UCS)of 375 MPa with satisfactory *** enhanced mechanical properties are attributed to the synergistic reinforcement effects of the dispersed and 3D skeletal structure of LPSOp with excellent interfacial bonding,the coexistence of nano-scale LPSO and W phase and partial solid solution strengthening.

Ecotoxicity evaluation of Cu-and Fe-CNT complexes based on the activity of bacterial bioluminescence and seed germination

The toxic effects of the composites of Fe^0 and Cu^0 with different percentages of CNTs were examined based on the activity of bacterial bioluminescence and seed germination. In terms of the EC50 values, the toxic effects of Cu^0 on bacterial bioluminescence and seed germination were approximately 2 and 180 times greater than that of Fe^0, respectively. The toxicity increased with increasing CNT content in the Cu-CNT mixtures for both organisms,whereas opposite results were observed with Fe-CNT mixtures. The mean toxic effects of Cu-CNT（6%） were approximately 1.3–1.4 times greater than that of Cu-CNT（0%）, whereas the toxic effects of Fe-CNT（6%） were approximately 2.1–2.5 times lower than that of Fe-CNT（0%） for both the bioluminescence activity and seed germination. The causes of this phenomenon are unclear at this point. More research will be needed to elucidate the mechanism of the toxicity of nano-mixture materials and the causes of the different patterns of toxicity with Cu-and Fe-CNT mixtures.

BCI induces apoptosis via generation of reactive oxygen species and activation of intrinsic mitochondrial pathway in H1299 lung cancer cells

The compound(E)-2-benzylidene-3-(cyclohexylamino)-2,3-dihydro-1 H-inden-1-one(BCI) is known as an inhibitor of dual specific phosphatase 1/6 and mitogen-activated protein kinase. However, its precise anti-lung cancer mechanism remains unknown. In this study, the effects of BCI on the viability of non-small cell lung cancer cell lines NCI-H1299, A549, and NCI-H460 were evaluated. We confirmed that BCI significantly inhibited the viability of p53(-) NCI-H1299 cells as compared to NCI-H460 and A549 cells, which express wild-type p53. Furthermore, BCI treatment increased the level of cellular reactive oxygen species and pre-treatment of cells with N-acetylcysteine markedly attenuated BCI-mediated apoptosis of NCI-H1299 cells. BCI induced cellular morphological changes, inhibited viability, and produced reactive oxygen species in NCI-H1299 cells in a dose-dependent manner. BCI induced processing of caspase-9, caspase-3, and poly ADP-ribose polymerase as well as the release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria into the cytosol. In addition, BCI downregulated Bcl-2 expression and enhanced Bax expression in a dose-dependent manner in NCI-H1299 cells. However, BCI failed to modulate the expression of the death receptor and extrinsic factor caspase-8 and Bid, a linker between the intrinsic and extrinsic apoptotic pathways in NCI-H1299 cells. Thus, BCI induces apoptosis via generation of reactive oxygen species and activation of the intrinsic pathway in NCI-H1299 cells.

High-performance colorful semitransparent perovskite solar cells with phase-compensated microcavities

We demonstrate highly efficient multi-colored semitransparent perovskite solar cells that can create high angular tolerant controllable transmissive colors up to 60~, based on phase-compensated microcavities. The efficiency of the semitransparent colors was improved by impedance matching, which was enabled by placing a dielectric functional layer on top of traditional optical microcavities, with negligible influence on color pureness. The vast majority of the visible part of solar radiation is efficiently utilized for solar energy harvesting, achieving 10.47%, 10.66%, and 11.18% of efficiency for red, green, and blue （RGB） colored solar cells, respective136 while a very small proportion of the visible solar spectrum is used for structural coloration that can be readily tuned by altering the cavity medium thickness. The approach described herein can be suitable for a variety of applications such as display systems with ultra-low power consumption, highly efficient colorful solar panels, low-power wearable electronics, and energy-efficient optoelectronics.

The contribution of gender and age on early and late mortality following ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction： results from the Korean Acute Myocardial Infarction National Registry with Registries

Background Although previous studies using Korean data have already reported higher rates of mortality in women, it is less clear whether these gender differences in prognosis post ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction （STEMI）, are age dependent. The aim of this study is to examine the gender-age interaction with early and late mortality in patients with STEMI enrolled in the Korean nationwide regis-try. Methods This prospective study stratified outcomes according to gender and age from 17,021 STEMI patients. We compared in-hospital, early （30 days） and late （12 months） mortality between gender to examine the gender-age interaction in multivariable models. Results In younger women （〈 60 years）, in-hospital [5.8% vs. 2.5%, P 〈 0.001; unadjusted odds ratios （OR）： 2.41, 95% confidence inter-vals （CI）： 1.59-3.66], early （6.2% vs. 2.6%, P 〈 0.001; unadjusted OR： 2.4, 95% CI： 2.12-2.72） and late mortality （7.0% vs. 3.1%, P 〉 0.001; unadjusted OR： 2.33, 95% CI： 2.08-2.61） were significantly higher compared with men. However, after adjustment for patient characteristics, Killip class ≥ 3, symptom to balloon time and major bleeding, and in-hospital bleeding, overall early and late mortality were no longer re-lated to gender in any age groups. Conclusions Among a Korean population with STEMI, higher early and late mortality in younger women may be explained by poor patient characteristics, higher Killip class ≥3, longer symptom to balloon time and more frequent major bleeding. Therefore, based on gender-age differences, more precise and aggressive preventive strategies focused on risk factor reduction, education and more intensive management for yotmger women should be performed.

Effects of Melandrium firmum methanolic extract on testosterone-induced benign prostatic hyperplasia in Wistar rats

Benign prostatic hyperplasia （BPH） is an age-related disease of unknown aetiology characterized by prostatic enlargement coincident with distinct alterations in tissue histomorphology. Instead of therapeutic agents that can cause severe side effects, plant extracts are frequently used to treat BPH. In this study, we investigated whether the Melandrium firmum methanolic extract （MFME） improves BPH, using the testosterone propionate （TP）-induced BPH rat model. Castration was performed via the scrotal route under sodium pentobarbital anaesthesia. BPH in castrated rats was generated via daily subcutaneous injections of TP （3 mg kg-1） dissolved in corn oil, for 4 weeks. MFME was administered daily by oral garage at a dose of 200 mg kg-1 for 4 weeks, along with the TP injections. The control group received injections of corn oil subcutaneously. At the scheduled termination of the experiment, all rats were killed and their prostates weighed; the relative prostate weight （prostate/body weight ratio） was calculated, and histomorphological changes in the prostate were examined. Additionally, we measured the levels of testosterone and dihydrotestosterone （DHT） in the serum and the prostate. Experimentally induced BPH led to marked decreases in the relative prostate weight and the DHT levels in the serum and the prostate. Histologically, BPH was evident in the ventral lobe of the prostate, and MFME treatment suppressed the severity of the lesions. These results indicate that MFME effectively inhibits the development of BPH induced by testosterone in a rat model. Further studies will be needed to identify the compound（s） responsibility for inducing the protective effect against BPH and determine its mechanism of action,

Objective:To explore the possible neuroprotective activities of Humulus japonicus extract against Parkinson's disease(PD)in a cellular ***:PD was modeled in PC12 cells using 6-hydroxydopamine(6-OHDA).The cell activity,intracellular levels of reactive oxygen species(ROS),anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic effects,and other related indicators and related signaling pathways were evaluated to elucidate the neuroprotective effects of Humulus japonicus ***:Humulus japonicus extract exhibited anti-oxidative and anti-apoptotic effects in 6-OHDA-stimulated PC12 *** also reduced oxidative stress-induced ROS accumulation;upregulated antioxidant enzymes,such as glutathione,catalase,heme oxidase-1,and 8-oxguanine glycosylase 1;promoted cell survival by decreasing BAX and increasing Bcl-2 and sirtuin 1 expression via the MAPK and/or Nrf2 signaling ***:Humulus japonicus extract has antioxidative and anti-apoptotic effects and could be developed as a promising candidate for preventing and treating oxidative stress-related neurodegenerative diseases.

The CUL3A–LFH1–UBC15 ubiquitin ligase complex mediates SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE degradation to accelerate flowering at high ambient temperature

Ambient temperature affects flowering time in plants,and the MADS-box transcription factor SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE(SVP)plays a crucial role in the response to changes in ambient *** protein stability is regulated by the 26S proteasome pathway and decreases at high ambient temperature,but the details of SVP degradation are ***,we show that SVP degradation at high ambient temperature is mediated by the CULLIN3–RING E3 ubiquitin ligase(CRL3)complex in Arabidopsis *** identified a previously uncharacterized protein that interacts with SVP at high ambient temperature and contains a BTB/POZ *** named this protein LATE FLOWERING AT HIGH TEMPERATURE 1(LFH1).Single mutants of LFH1 or CULLIN3A(CUL3A)showed late flowering specifically at 27***1 protein levels increased at high ambient *** found that LFH1 interacts with CUL3A in the cytoplasm and is important for SVP–CUL3A complex *** in CUL3A and/or LFH1 led to increased SVP protein stability at high ambient temperature,suggesting that the CUL3–LFH1 complex functions in SVP *** E2 ubiquitin-conjugating enzymes(UBCs)using RING-BOX PROTEIN 1(RBX1),a component of the CRL3 complex,as bait identified ***15 mutants also showed late flowering at high ambient *** vitro and in vivo ubiquitination assays using recombinant CUL3A,LFH1,RBX1,and UBC15 showed that SVP is highly ubiquitinated in an ATP-dependent ***,these results indicate that the degradation of SVP at high ambient temperature is mediated by a CRL3 complex comprising CUL3A,LFH1,and UBC15.

MRI of gastric carcinoma:Results of T and N-staging in an in vitro study

AIM： To determine the accuracy of 1.5-T magnetic resonance imaging （MRI） in the evaluation of gastric wall invasion and perigastric lymph node metastasis in gastric adenocarcinoma.METHODS： Twenty resected gastric specimens containing 20 tumors were studied with a 1.5-T MR system using a commercial head surface coil. MR scanning was performed with a T1 weighted image （TR/TE = 500/20）, and a T2 weighted image （TR/TE = 2500/90）. MR findings were compared with pathologic findings.RESULTS： A T1-weighted image demonstrated three layers in the normal gastric wall. All of the gastric tumors were well demonstrated by lesions and location. In a MRI findings of gastric wall invasion, there was 1 case of T1, 7 of T2, 11 of T3. Pathologic results of resected specimens included 3 cases of pT1, 4 of pT2, and 12 of pT3. The accuracy of T staging with MRI was 74% （14 of 19）. MRI findings of lymph node metastasis included 6 cases of NO, 13 cases of N1. The accuracy of the N staging with MRI was 47% （9 of 19）.CONCLUSION： MRI has a high diagnostic accuracy in the evaluation of the T staging of gastric cancerin vitro and thus potentially enables preoperative histopathologic staging.

Random lasing detection of structural transformation and compositions in silk fibroin scaffolds

In tissue engineering, microstructure and material composition of tissue scaffolds have major influences on the proliferation and differentiation of cells in the scaffolds. However, once tissue scaffolds implanted, it is extremely difficult to monitor the change of their microstructure and compositions during tissue regeneration. Here, we report how random lasing can be utilized to non-invasively monitor the structure and composition of scaffolds. We hypothesize that morphological and compositional change of silk fibroin (SF) scaffolds can be conveniently detected based on random lasing responses. Engineered SF scaffolds with hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanoparticles and controlled pore alignment were fabricated, and their random lasing responses were analyzed depending on the concentration of HAP nanoparticles and the degree of,:internal pore alignment. We also examined the real-time random lasing responses of porous SF scaffolds by applying a compressive force to' the scaffolds. Introduction of HAP nanoparticles lowered the lasing thresholds and narrowed the random lasing (RL) width dramatically, which :is likely due to the increase in heterogeneity in both refractive index and physical arrangement within the SF and HAP composites. The strong dependency of RL response on pore alignment was also measured and validated by numerical calculation with the finite element method (FEM).Finally, real-time monitoring of RL on compressed scaffolds demonstrated the possibility of using RL as a monitoring tool for structural change of SF scaffolds in vivo.
