Responses of five woody species to burial by marly sediment: the role of biomass allocation pattern flexibility

Aims In eroded lands of the french Southern Alps,burial of early established seedlings under marly sediment weakens the effect of vegetation on soil stabilization and sediment ***,this protective role is largely dependent on species’resistance to burial,and the understanding of species’tolerance to this environmental disturbance is highly valuable for basic knowledge on plant succession and for ecological restoration *** The response of five woody species with contrasting ecological requirements and natural habitats—three tree species,Pinus nigra,Robinia pseudoacacia and Acer campestre,and two shrubs,Ononis fruticosa and Hippophae rhamnoides—to experimental burial under marly sediment was *** were exposed to three burial levels:no burial(control),partial burial(50%of seedling height)and complete burial(100%of seedling height).Burial tolerance was evaluated based on seedling survival,height and *** allocation to shoots and roots and soluble sugar and starch contents in roots and stems were measured to identify plant traits that determine species response to *** Findings All species survived partial burial but only *** seedlings emerged from complete *** species were more tolerant to burial and buried plants showed no significant differences with *** two shrubs were found less tolerant and buried plants showed slower growth than *** results showed that species response was not related to initial soluble and starch content in roots and stems,but instead to biomass allocation pattern flexibility.

The perfect image retrieval and retrieval time are the two major challenges inCBIR systems. To improve the retrieval accuracy, the whole database is searched basedon many image characteristics such as color, shape, texture and edge information whichleads to more time consumption. This paper presents a new fuzzy based CBIR method,which utilizes colour, shape and texture attributes of the image. Fuzzy rule based systemis developed by combining color, shape, and texture feature for enhanced image *** this approach, DWT is used to pull out the texture characteristics and the region basedmoment invariant is utilized to pull out the shape features of an image. Color similarityand texture attributes are extorted using customized Color Difference Histogram (CDH).The performance evaluation based on precision and BEP measures reveals the superiorityof the proposed method over renowned obtainable approaches.

Understanding the near boundary acoustic oscillation of microbubbles is critical for the effective design of ultrasonic biomedical devices and surface cleaning ***,this study investigates the three-dimensional microbubble oscillation between two curved rigid plates experiencing a planar acoustic field using boundary integral method(BIm).The numerical model is validated via comparison with the nonlinear oscillation of the bubble governed by the modified Rayleigh-Plesset equation and with the axisymmetric model for an acoustic microbubble in infinite fluid ***,the influence of the wave direction and horizontal standoff distance(h)on the bubble dynamics(including jet velocity,jet direction,centroid movement,total energy,and Kelvin impulse)were *** was concluded that the jet velocity,the maximum radius and the total energy of the bubble are not significantly influenced by the wave direction,while the jet direction and the high-pressure region depend strongly on *** importantly,it was found that the jet velocity and the high-pressure region around the jet in acoustic bubble are drastically larger than their counterparts in the gas bubble.

Since the establishment of treaty ports in the mid-19th century,the urban development of many Chinese cities,and notably of Shanghai,has been heavily influenced by global economic flows and global urban and architectural *** Shanghai,extensive lilong neighbourhoods stand as remnants of the treaty port *** of these historic districts are in close proximity to rapidly transforming areas of the city,creating civic tension around demolition,conservation and the redevelopment of colonial *** the listed Bugaoli community in Shanghai’s old french Concession,the heritage strategies applied under the particular Cultural Relics Protection System(CRPS),and the discourse of local residents interviewed in the context of this project,this paper reveals the paradoxes around urban heritage conservation and urban development by considering three different temporalities:legislative time,economic time and citizen *** paper argues that actors involved in heritage practices should consider both space and time related issues in urban heritage *** communities such as Bugaoli experience conflicts between conservation and the demands of everyday *** underline and require a heritage strategy that acknowledges diverse temporalities and balances legal norms,economic interests and the public’s demands.

mass spectrometry detection of basic drugs in fast chiral analyses with vancomycin stationary phases

Current trends in chiral analysis of pharmaceutical drugs are focused on faster separations and higher separation efficiencies, Core-shell or superficially porous particles （SPP） based chiral stationary phases （CSPs） provide reduced analysis times while maintaining high column efficiencies and sensitivity. In this study, mobile phase conditions suitable for chiral analyses with electrospray ionization LC-mS were systematically investigated using vancomycin as a representative CSP. The performance of a 2.7 μm SPP based vancomycin CSP （SPP-V） 10 cm ×0.21 cm column was compared to that of a corresponding 5 μm fully porous particles based analogue column. The results demonstrated that the SPP-V column provides higher efficiencies, 2-5 time greater sensitivity and shorter analysis time for a set of 22 basic pharma- ceutical drugs. The SPP-V was successfully applied for the analysis of the degradation products of racemic citalopram whose enantiomers could be selectively identified by mS.

Wireless Sensor Networks(WSNs)comprises low power devices that are randomly distributed in a geographically isolated *** energy consumption of nodes is an essential factor to be ***,an improved energy management technique is designed in this investigation to reduce its consumption and to enhance the network’s *** can be attained by balancing energy clusters using a meta-heuristic Firefly algorithm model for network *** improved technique is based on the cluster head selection technique with measurement of the tour length of *** Division multiple Access(TDmA)scheduler is also improved with the characteristics/behavior of fireflies and also *** last,the development approach shows the progression of the network lifetime,the total number of selected Cluster Heads(CH),the energy consumed by nodes,and the number of packets *** approach is compared with Ad hoc On-Demand Distance Vector(AODV),Dynamic Source Routing(DSR)and Low Energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy(LEAH)*** is performed in mATLAB with the numerical outcomes showing the efficiency of the proposed *** energy consumption of sensor nodes is reduced by about 50%and increases the lifetime of nodes by 78%more than AODV,DSR and LEACH *** parameters such as cluster formation,end to end delay,percentage of nodes alive and packet delivery ratio,are also evaluated...The anticipated method shows better trade-off in contrast to existing techniques.

This paper proposes a novel multi-scale fluid flow data assimilation approach,which integrates and complements the advantages of a Bayesian sequential assimilationtechnique, the Weighted Ensemble Kalman filter (WEnKF) [27]. The data assimilation proposed in this work incorporates measurement brought by an efficient multiscalestochastic formulation of the well-known Lucas-Kanade (LK) estimator. This estimatorhas the great advantage to provide uncertainties associated to the motion measurements at different scales. The proposed assimilation scheme benefits from this multiscale uncertainty information and enables to enforce a physically plausible dynamicalconsistency of the estimated motion fields along the image sequence. Experimentalevaluations are presented on synthetic and real fluid flow sequences.

The aim of this paper is to report the results of experiments carried out on Al-Cu alloys with different Cu contents,studying the microstructure evolution during holding in the semi-solid *** 3-D microstructure was observed by in situ X-ray microtomography carried out at ESRF Grenoble,*** variation of the solid-liquid interface area per unit volume during holding was *** addition,local observations show that two coarsening mechanisms of the solid particles occur simultaneously:dissolution of small particles to the benefit of larger ones by an Ostwald-type mechanism and the growth of necks between solid particles due to *** observations confirm that in situ X-ray tomography is a very powerful tool to study the microstructure evolution in the semi-solid state and the influencing mechanisms in real-time.

We perform detailed computations of Lie algebras of infinitesimal CR-automorphisms associated to three specific model real analytic CR-generic submanifolds in C9by employing differential algebra computer tools—mostly within the maple package DifferentialAlgebra—in order to automate the handling of the arising highly complex linear systems of PDE’*** treating these new examples which prolong previous works of Beloshapka,of Shananina and of mamai,we provide general formulas for the explicitation of the concerned PDE systems that are valid in arbitrary codimension k 1 and in any CR dimension n ***,we show how Ritt’s reduction algorithm can be adapted to the case under interest,where the concerned PDE systems admit so-called complex conjugations.
