Application of a concrete thermal pile in cooling the warming permafrost under climate change

Permafrost degradation caused by climate warming is posing a serious threat to the stability of cast-in-place pile foundations in warm permafrost *** cold energy can be effectively utilized by two-phase closed thermosyphons(TPCTs)to cool the ***,we installed TPCTs in a cast-in-place pile foundation to create a unique structure called a thermal pile,which effectively utilizes the TPCTs to regulate ground *** we conducted a case study and numerical simulation to exhibit the cooling performance,and optimize the structure of the thermal *** purpose of this study is to promote the application of thermal piles in unstable permafrost *** on the findings,the thermal pile operated for approximately 53%of the entire year and effectively reduced the deep ground temperature at a rate of at least-0.1℃per ***,it successfully raised the permafrost table that is 0.35 m shallower than the natural ground *** characteristics prove highly beneficial in mitigating the adverse effects of permafrost degradation and enhancing infrastructure *** the length of the condenser section and the diameter of the TPCT in a suitable manner can effectively enhance the cooling capability of the thermal pile and ensure the long-term mechanical stability of the pile foundation even under climate warming.

Covalent bioactive compounds are successfully used in clinic and attracted intense research efforts in the fundamental study as well as drug *** advantageous effects of covalent compounds compared with non-covalent ones are highly dependent on electrophilic ***,electrophilic warheads with tunable reactivity and selectivity are highly demanded in fields of medicinal chemistry and chemical ***,we report a novel electrophilic warhead,chloromethyl group activated by thiol-substituted 1,2,***,a pair of regioisomers could be simultaneously occurred in the step of alkylation during the synthesis of this unique *** is a rare example that the alkylation could simultaneously generate these two separable regioisomers of 1,2,4-triazole at the nitrogen or sulfur *** covalent-working mechanism of this new warhead is confirmed by various chemoproteomics experiments including target identification and binding site ***,the reactivity and selectivity of this new electrophilic warhead could be efficiently tuned by virtue of stereo ***,one pair of regioisomers(19S and 19X)induced distinct modes of cell *** 19S could induce apoptosis of colon cancer cells while 19X could induce both apoptosis and ***,this study provides pairs of novel electrophilic warheads that could be useful not only in supporting the design of covalent compounds for drug discovery but also in providing chemical probes for the fundamental biological study.

Golden-flower fungus,the only dominant microorganism determining the Fu-brick tea quality through fermentation and the important microbe in Liupao tea,is considered a potential probiotic fungus based on its anti-obesity ***,the classification of golden-flower fungi is still controversial;the anti-obesity effect of golden-flower fungus polysaccharides remains *** this study,we identify a golden-flower strain as Aspergillus cristatus based on morphological characteristics and multigene phylogeny analysis,which resolves the controversy of ***,we find *** polysaccharides(ACPS)attenuate obesity in *** modulate gut bacterial *** which Akkermansia,Akkermansia muciniphila,Bacteroides,Romboutsia,Blautia,and Desulfovibrio are considered the core microbes regulated by *** increase fecal total short-chain fatty acid content and serum,hepatic,and fecal total bile acid ***,ACPS-induced gut microbiota alteration plays a causal role in the protection from obesity,according to a fecal transplantation ***,ACPS ameliorate obesity by regulating gut microbiota and gut microbiota-related metabolites.

Objective:The aim of this study was to explore the effects of Babao dan(BBD),a traditional Chinese medicine,on gastric cancer(GC)progression in *** and Methods:A subcutaneous xenograft mouse model of GC was established using MGC80-3 *** terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP:2'-deoxyuridine 5'-triphosphate-biotin nick-end labeling method was adopted to detect cell apoptosis in *** expression levels of proteins associated with proliferation,apoptosis,and angiogenesis were measured by immunohistochemical staining or western blotting(WB).The activation and protein levels of p-c-Jun N-terminal kinase(JNK),p-p38,p-extracellular-regulated kinase 1/2,p-nuclear factor-κB(NF-κB),and p-STAT3 were examined by Bio-plex and ***:BBD significantly inhibited tumor growth in GC mouse models with no adverse effect on body weight or organ *** was also found that BBD significantly suppressed the proliferation of GC tumor cells,induced the apoptosis of tumor cells,and inhibited angiogenesis through inactivating with mitogen-activated protein kinase,NF-κB,and STAT3 ***:BBD exerts suppressive effects on GC tumor growth by regulating multiple pathways in vivo,which may provide a novel treatment option for GC therapy.

Remote estimates of suspended particulate matter in global lakes using machine learning models

Suspended particulate matter(SPM)in lakes exerts strong impact on light propagation,aquatic ecosystem productivity,which co-varies with nutrients,heavy metal and micro-pollutant in *** lakes,SPM exerts strong absorption and backscattering,ultimately affects water leaving signals that can be detected by satellite *** regression models based on specific band or hand ratios have been widely used for SPM estimate in the past with moderate *** are still rooms for model accuracy improvements,and machine learning models may solve the non-linear relationships between spectral variable and SPM in *** assembled more than 16,400 in situ measured SPM in lakes from six continents(excluding the Antarctica continent),of which 9640 samples were matched with Landsat overpasses within±7 *** machine learning algorithms and two simple regression methods(linear and partial least squares models)were used to estimate SPM in lakes and the performance were *** overcome the problem of imbalance datasets in regression,a Synthetic Minority Over-Sampling technique for regression with Gaussian Noise(SMOGN)was adopted in this *** comparison,we found that gradient boosting decision tree(GBDT),random forest(RF),and extreme gradient boosting(XGBoost)models demonstrated good spatiotemporal transferability with SMOGN processed dataset,and has potential to map SPM at different year with good quality of Landsat land surface reflectance *** all the tested modeling approaches,the GBDT model has accurate calibration(n=6428,R^(2)=0.95,MAPE=29.8%)from SPM collected in 2235 lakes across the world,and the validation(n=3214,R^(2)=0.84,MAPE=38.8%)also exhibited stable ***,the good performances were also exhibited by RF model with calibration(R^(2)=0.93)and validation(R^(2)=0.86,MAPE=24.2%)*** applied GBDT and RF models to map SPM of typical lakes,and satisfactory result was *** addition,the GBDT model was evaluated b

Seasonal response of nitrogen exchange fluxes to crab disturbance at sediment-water interface in coastal tidal wetlands

Coastal wetlands are hotspots for nitrogen(N)cycling,and crab burrowing is known to transform N in intertidal marsh ***,the underlying mechanisms remain *** study conducted field experiments and used indoor control test devices to investigate the seasonal response of nitrogen to crab disturbance at the sediment-water interface in coastal tidal flat *** results showed that crab disturbance exhibited significant seasonality with large seasonal differences in cave density and *** to crab disturbance,nitrogen fuxes at the sediment-water interface were much greater in the box with crabs than in the box without *** summer,NH-N showed a positive flux from the sediment to the overlying water,but NO2-N and NOg-N showed positive fluxes from the sediment to the overlying water only in early *** winter,NH-N showed a positive flux from the sediment to the overlying water,but NO-N and NO,-N both exhibited positive and negative *** results indicated that the presence of crab burrows can cause the aerobic layer to move downward by approximately 8-15 cm in summer and directly promote nitrification at the sediment surface.

Effects of arginine supplementation on splenocyte cytokine mRNA expression in rats with gut-derived sepsis

AIM: To investigate the effects of arginine (Arg)-enriched diets before sepsis and/or Arg-containing total parenteral nutrition (TPN) after sepsis or both on cytokine mRNA expression levels in splenocytes of rats with gut-derived ***: Rats were assigned to four experimental groups. Groups 1 and 2 were fed with a semipurified diet, while groups 3 and 4 had part of the casein replaced by Arg which provided 2% of the total *** the rats were fed with these diets for 10 d, sepsis was induced by cecal ligation and puncture (CLP), at the same time an internal jugular vein was cannulated. All rats were maintained on TPN for 3 d. Groups 1 and 3were infused with conventional TPN, while groups 2 and 4 were supplemented with Arg which provided 2% of the total calories in the TPN solution. All rats were killed 3 d after CLP to examine their splenocyte subpopulation distribution and cytokine expression ***: Plasma interleukin (IL)-2, IL-4, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) and interferon (IFN-γ) were not detectable 3 d after CLP. There were no differences in the distributions of CD45Ra+, CD3+, CD4+, and CD8+cells in whole blood and splenocytes among the four groups. The splenocyte IL-2 mRNA expression in the Arg-supplemented groups was significantly higher than that in group 1. IL-4 mRNA expression in groups 3 and 4was significantly higher than that in groups 1 and 2. The mRNA expression of IL-10 and IFN-γ was significantly higher in group 4 than in the other three groups. There was no difference in TNF-α mRNA expression among the four ***: The influence of Arg on the whole blood and splenic lymphocyte subpopulation distribution is not obvious. However, Arg administration, especially before and after CLP, significantly enhances the mRNA expression levels of Th1 and Th2 cytokines in the spleen of rats with gut-derived sepsis.

Premature ovarian insufficiency(POI)is a severe female reproductive disorder that affects 1%of women in general populations(European Society for Human Reproduction and Embryology[ESHRE]Guideline Group on POI et al.,2016).An increasing prevalence up to 3.7%has been reported in a recent meta-analysis(Golezar et al.,2019).POl can lead to infertility or subfertility,as well as a range of complex complications suffering multi-organ systems,seriously threatening women's health and reducing the life *** contrast,POl is a representative heterogeneous disease with multiple *** more than 70 causative POI genes have been identified,the etiology of more than half of the POI patients is still ambiguous(Jiao et al.,2018).Unreported POI causative genes,therefore,remain to be identified.

Effect of synbiotics on intestinal microflora and digestive enzyme activities in rats

AIM: To investigate the effect of synbiotics, i.e. probiotics and prebiotics mixture, on the gut microbial ecology and digestive enzyme activities in rats. METHODS: Forty-eight SD rats weighing about 280 g were used in this study. Rats were divided into three groups according to the contents of probiotics and prebiotics mixture in the feed as control, low and high dose groups. The duration of the experiment was 8 wk. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, thefecal Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium counts were significantly increased and the fecal Coliform organism counts were markedly reduced in the low and high dose groups. Concerning the digestive enzyme activity of jejunum, only lactase activity increased in low dose group. However, significant increase of lipase, lactase, sucrase, and isomaltase activities were observed in high dose ***: Intake of low and high dosages of probiotics and prebiotics mixture significantly improved the ecosystem of the intestinal tract by increasing the probiotics population and digestive enzyme activities in rats.

Based on the unified Hauser–Feshbach and exciton model,which can describe the particle emission processes between discrete energy levels with energy,angular momentum,and parity conservations,a statistical theory of light nucleus reaction(STLN)is developed to calculate the double-differential cross-sections of the outgoing neutron and light charged particles for the proton-induced^(6) Li reaction.A significant difference is observed between the p+^(6) Li and p+^(7) Li reactions owing to the discrepancies in the energy-level structures of the *** reaction channels,including sequential and simultaneous emission processes,are analyzed in *** the double-differential cross-sections of the outgoing proton as an example,the influence of contaminations(such as^(1) H,^(7)Li,^(12)C,and^(16)O)on the target is identified in terms of the kinetic energy of the first emitted *** optical potential parameters of the proton are obtained by fitting the elastic scattering differential *** calculated total double-differential cross-sections of the outgoing proton and deuteron at E_(p)=14 MeV agree well with the experimental data for different outgoing ***,the mixed double differential cross-sections of^(3) He andαare in good agreement with the *** agreement between the measured data and calculated results indicates that the two-body and three-body breakup reactions need to be considered,and the pre-equilibrium reaction mechanism dominates the reaction *** on the STLN model,a PLUNF code for the p+^(6) Li reaction is developed to obtain an ENDF-6-formatted file of the double-differential cross-sections of the nucleon and light composite charged particles.
