Manganese enhances the antitumor function of CD8^(+)T cells by inducing type I interferon production

The presence of cytosolic DNA at tumor sites and the activation of the cGAS-STING pathway have been implicated in the activation of antitumor immune responses.1,2,3 Manganese (Mn) is a necessary trace element for intracellular activities. It plays important roles in development, digestion, reproduction, antioxidant defense, energy production, immunity, and neuronal activity regulation.4 Mn was reported to enhance cGAS-STING activation through increased sensitivity to dsDNA during viral infections.5 However, it is unclear whether Mn can enhance antitumor immune functions. Here, we revealed that Mn2+ could inhibit the development of murine hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) through immune modulations. It upregulated IFN-γ and TNF-α production in splenic and tumor-infiltrating CD8+ T cells. Moreover, Mn2+ significantly increased type I interferon (IFN) production and type I IFN-stimulated gene (ISG) expression in tumor-bearing mice. Further analysis revealed that myeloid cells could upregulate type I IFN production and increase costimulatory molecule expression upon Mn2+ stimulation. In vivo depletion of CD8+ T cells or treatment of IFNAR KO mice diminished the antitumor activity of Mn2+, suggesting that the antitumor function of Mn2+ is dependent on both CD8+ T cells and type I IFN signaling. Our results provide evidence to support Mn2+ as a novel agent that can be incorporated into cancer immunotherapy.

Combustion characteristic and aging behavior of bimetal thermite powders

Nanothermites have been employed as fuel additives in energetic formulations due to their higher energy density over CHNO energetics. Nevertheless, sintering and degradation of nanoparticles significantly limit the practical use of nanothermites. In this work, combustion characteristic and aging behavior of aluminum/iron oxide(Al/Fe2O3) nanothermite mixtures were investigated in the presence of micron-scale nickel aimed to produce bimetal thermite powders. The results showed that the alumina content in the combustion residue increased from 88.3% for Al/Fe2O3 nanothermite to 96.5% for the nanothermite mixture containing 20 wt% nickel. Finer particle sizes of combustion residue were obtained for the nanothermite mixtures containing nickel, indicative of the reduced agglomeration. Both results suggested a more complete combustion in the bimetal thermite powders. Aging behavior of the nanothermite mixture was also assessed by measuring the heat of combustion of the mixture before and after aging process. The reduction in heat of combustion of nanothermite mixtures containing nickel was less severe as compared to a significant decrease for the nanothermite mixture without nickel, indicating better aging resistance of the bimetal thermite powders.

Effects of nano-sized aluminum on detonation characteristics and metal acceleration for RDX-based aluminized explosive

Nano-sized aluminum(Nano-Al)powders hold promise in enhancing the total energy of explosives and the metal acceleration ability at the same ***,the near-detonation zone effects of reaction between Nano-Al with detonation products remain *** this study,the overall reaction process of 170 nm Al with RDX explosive and its effect on detonation characteristics,detonation reaction zone,and the metal acceleration ability were comprehensively investigated through a variety of experiments such as the detonation velocity test,detonation pressure test,explosive/window interface velocity test and confined plate push test using high-resolution laser *** fluoride(LiF),which has an inert behavior during the explosion,was used as a control to compare the contribution of the reaction of aluminum.A thermochemical approach that took into account the reactivity of aluminum and ensuing detonation products was adopted to calculate the additional energy release by *** the numerical simulations based on the calculated afterburn energy and experimental results,the parameters in the detonation equation of state describing the Nano-Al reaction characteristics were *** study found that when the 170 nm Al content is from 0%to 15%,every 5%increase of aluminum resulted in about a 1.3%decrease in detonation *** pressure gauge measurement showed no significant enhancement in detonation *** detonation reaction time and reaction zone length of RDX/Al/wax/80/15/5 explosive is 64 ns and 0.47 mm,which is respectively 14%and 8%higher than that of RDX/wax/95/5 explosive(57 ns and 0.39 mm).Explosive/window interface velocity curves show that 170 nm Al mainly reacted with the RDX detonation products after the detonation *** the recording time of about 10 ms throughout the plate push test duration,the maximum plate velocity and plate acceleration time accelerated by RDX/Al/wax/80/15/5 explosive is 12%and 2.9 ms higher

Accurate machine learning models based on small dataset of energetic materials through spatial matrix featurization methods

A large database is desired for machine learning(ML) technology to make accurate predictions of materials physicochemical properties based on their molecular *** a large database is not available,the development of proper featurization method based on physicochemical nature of target proprieties can improve the predictive power of ML models with a smaller *** this work,we show that two new featurization methods,volume occupation spatial matrix and heat contribution spatial matrix,can improve the accuracy in predicting energetic materials' crystal density(ρ_(crystal)) and solid phase enthalpy of formation(H_(f,solid)) using a database containing 451 energetic *** mean absolute errors are reduced from 0.048 g/cm~3 and 24.67 kcal/mol to 0.035 g/cm~3 and 9.66 kcal/mol,*** leave-one-out-cross-validation,the newly developed ML models can be used to determine the performance of most kinds of energetic materials except *** ML models are applied to predict ρ_(crystal) and H_(f,solid) of CHON-based molecules of the 150 million sized PubChem database,and screened out 56 candidates with competitive detonation performance and reasonable chemical *** further improvement in future,spatial matrices have the potential of becoming multifunctional ML simulation tools that could provide even better predictions in wider fields of materials science.

Additive manufacturing of composite materials and functionally graded structures using selective heat melting technique

The feasibility of using selective heat melting(SHM) to fabricate composite materials and functionally graded structures was *** report,for the first time,the successful 3 D printing of copper(Cu)-polyethylene(PE) composite,iron(Fe)-polyethylene(PE) composite and functionally graded CuO foams using the SHM *** was found that a low feed rate,high airflow rate and high airflow temperature were required for efficient delivery of heat from the emitted hot air to the powder bed,so that the PE binder particles can melt and form dense composites with smooth *** best mechanical properties were exhibited by composites with 80 vol.% PE,as lower PE concentrations led to deficient binding of the metal particles,while higher PE concentrations meant that very few metal particles were available to strengthen the *** strength exhibited by Cu-PE composites was comparable to engineering plastics such as polycarbonate,with the added advantage of being electrically *** average conductivity of the samples,0.152±0.28 S/m,was on par with physically crosslinked graphene *** subjecting a Cu-PE composite,with Cu concentration graded from 10 vol.% to 30 vol.%,to a high temperature debinding and sintering treatment in air,CuO foam with graded porosity can be *** CuO foam was observed to fail in a layer-by-layer manner under mechanical compression,which is a characteristic of functionally graded *** study shows that,compared to existing 3 D printing techniques,SHM can be cheaper,have wider material compatibility,occupy a smaller footprint and potentially induce less residual stresses in the fabricated ***,it could be a valuable complement to current additive manufacturing techniques for fabricating mechanically strong composite materials and functionally graded structures.

Background and aim:Conventional hepatitis C treatment using pegylated interferon(PEG-IFN)and ribavirin is associated with significant side ***28B polymorphism can predict response to treatment,with CC genotype having a better *** gene deficiency protects against clinically significant anaemia induced by *** purpose of this study was to determine IL28B polymorphismand ITPA variation among hepatitis C genotype 1 patients who have undergone therapy with PEG-IFN and ribavirin and their association with sustained viral response(SVR).Methods:All hepatitis C genotype 1 patients who had been treated with PEG-IFN and ribavirin over the past 10 years were identified by available medical records and were contacted by letter of invitation to participate in the *** samples for IL28B and ITPA genotyping were *** records were reviewed for verification of treatment response,development of anaemia and if treatment reduction was required during the ***:A total of 61 patients with hepatitis C genotype 1 were treated with PEG-IFN and ribavirin,of whom 42 agreed to participate in the *** age was 45.6±12.9 years at time of treatment,and 83.3%of patients ***-three(78.6%)had IL28B CC genotype,of whom 25(75.8%)obtained SVR compared with only 3 of 9(33.3%)non C/C genotype patients who achieved SVR(P=0.041).Eleven(26.1%)patients had ITPA AC genotype,and 30(71.4%)had CC *** was no statistically significant difference between ITPA AC and CC genotypes in predicting clinically significant anaemia(45.5%vs 63.3%,P=0.302).Even among patients who developed anaemia,70.8%stillmanaged to achieve *** reduction also had no impact on ***:Hepatitis C genotype 1 patients should be informed of the response rate for treatment with PEG-IFN and ribavirin in a population with favourable IL28B genotype before consideration of newer therapeutic options.

“三小球”即为乒乓球、羽毛球及网球,这三种球类运动都分为单打及双打,其中双打更追求配合与默契。目前各个国际大赛中,顶尖级运动员多以左右手组合进行配对,成绩也不断上升。现在很多教练会注重培养左手运动员,大部分队伍会找左手运动员进行陪练,这是因为比例较大的右利手运动员对小众群体的左撇子的打法并不是非常熟悉,而且左利手运动员在乒乓球比赛中球的运动轨迹一般很难适应,右利手运动员往往吃了“习惯上”的亏。中国的三小球发展非常迅速,比赛中常常可见羽毛球和乒乓球在决赛时双方都是中国队的球员。在许多大赛中,我们都看到中国组合的双打配对大多为左右手配对组合。所以在乒乓球竞技中,左右手配对的优势显而易见。前人虽对三小球双打打法及左撇子优势方面做了很多相关研究,但以往的研究中对左右手配对运动员的研究极少,尤其关于三小球左右手配对的竞技优势资料更为贫乏,经多方搜集整理后得到了许多相关资料,为完成本研究提供了一定的理论支持。本文为了更突出三小球比赛中左右手配对组合的竞技优势,对其在战术及站位上进行了分析及统计。本文在前人研究的基础上,应用录像观察法、落点区域划分、质量评估标准法、专家访谈法、数据统计法及直接观察法,对体育专选班、专业运动员(国际、国内水平)的左右手配对运动员在双打比赛中的竞技优势进行对比分析,分析左右手配对组合与右右手配对组合在比赛过程中,站位、接发球、比赛中前四拍击球位置及技术运用等进行数据统计。录像观察法主要从三小球在比赛中技、战术方面及接发球落点、站位进行观察。专家访谈法主要对马来西亚和中国的专业的教练进行访谈,了解和学习关于乒、羽、网双打比赛中的技术知识。文章中运用对比分析得出在比赛中左右手配对比右右手配对更有竞技优势,其中有站位上的优势、“习惯上”的优势,球的旋转优势、击球位置及技术运用上的优势。本文主要研究以下几个方面:1.生理机制,大脑两半球对身体两侧肢体运动的生理机制的明显差异;2.左右手配对与右右配对在小球双打比赛中位置轮转上分析,对乒、羽、网双打的站位作对比分析;3.球的旋转,小球在击打后经过与拍面的摩擦产生旋转;4.习惯与不习惯,由于球的旋转与左右配对的站位,右右手配对面对比例小的左右手配对组合的概率小,因而会不习惯及不适应。最后得出以下结论:1.在生理机制上,右脑控制支配左手,右脑善于掌握思维空间想象,左手的神经传导比右手快,所以左右手配对比右右手配更有优势。左右配对乒乓球运动员在站位上因双打比赛规则中两人必须交替击球,在空间位置转换互补上比右右配对更有竞技优势。2.左右配对羽毛球运动员在防守反攻前后站位时,在进攻方面左、右两侧都有进攻的优势;反之右右配对在前后站位进攻时,左侧属于反手弱侧,进攻处于劣势。进攻转防守的左右站位对左右配对和右右配对优势不明显。3.羽毛球的旋转轨迹没有乒乓球和网球旋转性大,无论左、右手运动员击打过来的球,在接球时都不会产生任何变化,故变化性小于乒乓球与网球。4.乒乓球的场地比网球小,节奏更快,加上乒乓球旋转性大,所以左右手配队与右右手配对中,在习惯与不习惯上,左右手较占优势。5.乒乓球双打讲求配合,左右配对有球旋转轨迹以及站位上的优势,两人配合上明显互补性更强且更合理,比右右手配对占有更好的竞技优势。以中国国家队为例,乒乓球队近几年成绩称霸天下是有一定的道理。6.根据三小球左右配对优势进行对比发现,小球左右配对中拥有最佳优势的是乒乓球,接下来是网球,而羽毛球相对来说没有明显的优势。根据结论提出以下建议:1.早期挖掘及注重培养左撇子运动员;2.知己知彼,百战不殆;3.训练时加强以左撇子为训练对象,在平时训练中多以左撇子运动员为训练对象,找出其弱点及打法,以提高竞技水平及成绩;4.了解左右配对的优势,让更多人了解左右手配对的优势,对小球运动产生兴趣,增强人民体质。
