To report a case of cochlear implantation with a misplaced electrode array in the vestibule and the causes for the delay in identification.A 23-year-old male with left single-sided deafness underwent cochlear *** intraoperative assessment did not reveal any major red flags of electrode array *** did not display any vestibular symptoms postoperatively but showed poor speech performance,even though the aided tone audiometry revealed good sound detection ***-resolution computed tomography(HRCT)showed that the entire perimodiolar electrode array was situated within the vestibule,and a revision surgery was *** analysis of the neural response telemetry(NRT)revealed subtle differences in responses between the misplaced and correctly placed electrode *** previously reported cases,the patient did not display vestibular symptoms despite the misplacement of the electrode in the vestibule due to existing weakness in otolithic *** investigation is warranted when a motivated patient with normal inner ear anatomy does not show benefit with the cochlear implant post-operatively.

Predictive Modelling of Etching Process of Machinable Glass Ceramics, Boron Nitride, and Silicon Carbide

The present paper discusses the development of the first and second order model for predicting the chemical etching variables, namely, etching rate, surface roughness and accuracy of advanced ceramics. The first and second order etching rate, surface roughness and accuracy equations were developed using the Response Surface Method (RSM). The etching variables included etching temperature, etching duration, solution and solution concentration. The predictive models’ analyses were supported with the aid of the statistical software package – Design Expert (DE 7). The effects of the individual etching variables and interaction between these variables were also investigated. The study showed that predictive models successfully predicted the etching rate, surface roughness and accuracy readings recorded experimentally with 95% confident interval. The results obtained from the predictive models were also compared with Multilayer Perceptron Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Chemical Etching variables predictive by ANN were in good agreement with those with those obtained by RSM. This observation indicated the potential of ANN in predicting chemical etching variables thus eliminating the need for exhaustive chemical etching in optimization.

Characterization of flgK gene and FlgK protein required for H pylori Colonization-from cloning to clinical relevance

AIM： To characterize the role of flgK and its protein product in Hpylori colonization. METHODS： The PCR cloning method identified the flgK gene. An isogenic flgK mutant was constructed by gene replacement and confirmed by Southern blot analysis and PCR analysis. The recombinant FlgK protein （r-FlgK） was purified. Electron microscopy （EM） was applied to demonstrate the flagella of H pylori. An in vitro motility test was assessed in semisolid medium. The densities of H pylori colonization with either the wild-type strain or its flgK mutant were compared among BALB/c mice with or without pre-immunization with r-FlgK. The serological responses to r-FlgK were analyzed for 70 clinical patients with different densities of H pylori colonization. RESULTS： From a duodenal ulcer strain, the flgK gene was cloned and it contained 1821 bp, with a 95.7% identity to the published sequences. No flagella were observed under EM for the mutant strain, which had a loss of motility. Hpylori density was lower in the BALB/c mice inoculated by the mutant or with pre-immunization with r-FlgK compared to unimmunized mice or mice inoculated by the wild-type strain （P 〈 0.05）. In the H pylori-infected patients, the serological responses to r-FlgK were uniformly low in titer.CONCLUSION： FlgK encoded by flgK is important for flagella formation and H pylori motility. Deficiency in FlgK or an enhanced serological response to r-FlgK can interfere with Hpylori colonization. FlgK of Hpylori could be a novel target for vaccination.

Effect of synbiotics on intestinal microflora and digestive enzyme activities in rats

AIM: To investigate the effect of synbiotics, i.e. probiotics and prebiotics mixture, on the gut microbial ecology and digestive enzyme activities in rats. METHODS: Forty-eight SD rats weighing about 280 g were used in this study. Rats were divided into three groups according to the contents of probiotics and prebiotics mixture in the feed as control, low and high dose groups. The duration of the experiment was 8 wk. RESULTS: Compared with the control group, thefecal Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium counts were significantly increased and the fecal Coliform organism counts were markedly reduced in the low and high dose groups. Concerning the digestive enzyme activity of jejunum, only lactase activity increased in low dose group. However, significant increase of lipase, lactase, sucrase, and isomaltase activities were observed in high dose ***: Intake of low and high dosages of probiotics and prebiotics mixture significantly improved the ecosystem of the intestinal tract by increasing the probiotics population and digestive enzyme activities in rats.

The study investigated the effect of Benthosemapterotumpeptide on aging in mice. Mice aged of 3 monthswere divided into A toE groups. Mice in group B to E were injected with D-galactose, and orally administered Benthosemapterotum peptide at 0, 10, 50, and 100 mg/d, respectively, for 6 weeks after 6-week induction. Group A as the control group was injected with saline without treatment. The results showed that brain-derived neurotrophy factor （BDNF） level in the braindecreased in group B was significantly increased in treated groups. Time to platform in group A, D, and E was significantly less than that in group B. Group A had more correct annulus crossings and latency time in platform than group B. Group C had similar correct annulus crossings and latency time in platform as group A. Therefore, Benthosemapterotum peptideelevates brain BDNF and improves memory function in aging mice.
