High geo-stress distribution and high geo-stress concentration area models for eastern margin of Qinghai-Tibet plateau

High geo-stress and its engineering problems have severely affected the development of civil infrastructures in western china. The problems include high rock slope instabilities,rock burst,gas explosion and large-scale soft rock deformation in deep *** paper investigates the distribution of the high geo-stresses and the models of the stress concentration areas in the eastern margin of Qinghai-Tibet plateau so that a solid foundation can be formed to address the *** investigation is based on a comprehensive analysis of the previous research data of the eastern margin and uses remote sensing techniques,geophysics,geochemistry,and large scale geological surveying *** investigation has found that some special tectonic zones have high *** high geo-stresses are located at(1) the convergent boundary areas between two fault blocks with large strength differences,(2) the tectonic necks in front of active fault blocks,and(3. the intersection and/or termination areas of faults within the fault *** example for(1) is the north Qilian high geo-stress *** example for(2) is the Minshan high geo-stress area in the northwest ***,the investigation has summarized six basic models to characterize the high geo-stress concentration *** first one is the convergent stress concentration model at the boundary of two fault *** other five stress concentration modes are oblique fissures or intersecting areas,areas without lower velocity layer in the crust,areas of compression induced tensile cracking,tectonic wedge areas,and tectonic neck areas,respectively.

"5.12"Wenchuan Earthquake(Ms=8.0) triggered tens of thousands of geo-hazards throughout an area of about 100,000 *** distribution of geo-hazards is definitely affected by the such factors as geomorphology,topography,lithology and human engineering activities,but the distribution of earthquake-triggered geo-hazards is mainly controlled by the co-seismic fault, for they present zonal distribution along the co-seismic *** the studies of three geo-hazard concentration areas including Doujiangyan to Wenchuan Road,Beichuan to Anxian County area,and Magong to Hongguang area,it is found that Wenchuan Earthquake-triggered geo-hazards have the following co-seismic effects:(1) Wenchuan Earthquake is a thrust fault *** distribution of geo-hazards show marked"hanging wall and footwall effects",manifested by that the distribution concentration in the hanging wall of seismic fault is higher than that in the footwall and the former coverage is wider than the latter as well as that the scale of geo-hazards is larger than that in the footwall;(2) the strong development zones of geo-hazards are within the range of 7 km in the hanging wall of co-seismic *** ranges of 7 to 1 lkm in the hanging wall and o to 5km in the footwall can be delimited as the middle development zones.A vast majority of large-scale landslides are distributed within the range of 5km from the fault,and large-scale landslides are unlikely to occur within the range of over 10km;(3. the transitional and staggered positions of fault are the concentration areas of geo-hazards and large-scale geo-hazards are likely to occur in these positions;(4) the preferred direction of landslide is NW-SE,basically vertical to the spreading direction of Yingxiu-Beichuan *** may be because that Longmenshan Fault Zone has always been affected by the tectonic stress field of NW-SE extrusion area since Cenozoic Time;(5) the earthquake-triggered geo-hazards mainly occur in the zones of seismic intensit

Development and distribution of geohazards triggered by the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in china

As the Wenchuan Earthquake was of high magnitude and shallow seismic focus, it caused great dam- age and serious geohazards. By the field investigation and the interpretation of remote-sensing infor- mation after the earthquake and by using means of GIS technology, the distribution of geohazards triggered by the earthquake are analyzed and the conclusions are as follows: (1) The earthquake geo- hazards showed the feature of zonal distribution along the earthquake fault zone and linear distribution along the rivers; (2) the distribution of earthquake geohazards had a marked hanging wall effect, for the development density of geohazards in the hanging wall of earthquake fault zone was obviously higher than that in the foot wall and the width of strong development zone in the hanging wall was about 10 km; (3. the topographical slope was a main factor which controlled the development of earthquake geo- hazards and a vast majority of hazards were distributed on the slopes of 20° to 50°; (4) the earthquake geohazards had a corresponding relationship with the elevation and micro-landform, for most hazards happened in the river valleys and canyon sections below the elevation of 1500 to 2000 m, particularly in the upper segment of canyon sections (namely, the turning point from the dale to the canyon). Thin ridge, isolated or full-face space mountains were most sensitive to the seismic wave, and had a striking amplifying effect. In these areas, collapses and landslides were most likely to develop; (5) the study also showed that different lithologies determined the types of geohazards, and usually, landslides oc- curred in soft rocks, while collapses occurred in hard rocks.

Sedimentary Characteristics of the Pleistocene Outwash Accumulation and their Implications for Paleoclimate Change in the Midstream of Dadu River,Southwestern china

Ancient outwash accumulations, deposited in Pleistocene with complicated sedimentary characteristics, are discovered in the midstream valley of Dadu River, Southwestern china. Their sedimentation characteristics are investigated for gaining a deep insight into the dependency of Paleoclimate changes in this area. This is achieved by means of detailed site investigation, sampling and laboratory tests （grain size distribution and Electron Spin Resonance dating tests） for two representative outwash accumulations. Based on the present study, several main conclusions are drown out as follows： 1） The accumulations are composed mainly of coarse soils （coarse fraction is over 50%） and very coarse soils （coarse fraction is about 20%-3.%, and very coarse fraction is over 55%）; 2） The coarse soils are sub-rounded well-sorted and sub-stratified to well-stratified, while the very coarse soils exhibit sub-rounded to sub-angular and poorly-sorted; 3. The accumulations are postulated to have been intermittently deposited in three time periods. This is evidenced by two layers of weathered/ residual clay, purple to brick red in color; and 4） It is inferred that the temperature in the study area increased over three time periods, i.e., 280 ka B.P. to 120 ka B.P., 110 ka B.P. to 80 ka B.P. and 70 ka B. P. to 25 ka B.P., and declined twice at 120 ka B.P. and 77 ka B.P. respectively.

Longmen Shan is located the special joint between the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau in the west and the Yangtze craton in the east. Consisting of a series of parallel imbricated thrust, it develops, from the west to the east, the Maoxian-Wenchuan, Yingxiu-Beichuan and Pengxian-Guanxian faults. Wenchuan Ms 8.0 earthquake is a thrust with strike-slip type, and surface ruptures are located in Yingxiu-Beichuan fault zone and Peng- xian-Guanxian fault zone. Based on the geological background, tectonic setting, the active tectonics of Long- men Shan and surface ruptures of the Wenchuan earthquake, a dynamical model to illustrate possible links between surface processes and upward extrusion of lower crustal flow channel at the eastern margin of the Tibetan plateau have been studied, and the results is the material in lower crust in the Longmen Shan moving as nearly-vertical extrusion and uplift, resulting in the surface rate of tectonic movement differing according to depth rate as well as the occurrence of large shallow Wenchuan earthquake.
