The fecal shield is a double-edged sword for larvae of a leaf beetle

Larvae of some leaf beetles carry masses of feces covering parts or all of the body,which is called a"fecal shield'In general,the shield is thought to be a defense structure against natural ***,some studies have suggested that defense effectiveness varies depending on the natural *** this study,we used a fecal retention leaf beetle Ophrida xanthospilota(Coleoptera:Chrysomelidae),and 2 local generalist predators(an ant,Camponotus japonicus(Hymenoptera:Formicidae)and a stinkbug,Arma custos(Hemiptera:Pentatomidael)as a system to test the hypothesis that the fecal shield of *** plays different roles in predation behavior of different predators and can provide multiple chemical communication signals in predator-prey *** bioassays showed that the fecal shield of *** larvae repelled the ant *** while attracting the stinkbug *** results also strongly demonstrated that hexane extracts of the fecal shield significantly repelled ***,while dichloromethane(DCM)extracts did not inhibit ant ***,DCM extracts attracted ***,but hexane extracts did ***,we suggest that the fecal shield is a double-edged sword for the larvae of *** results also indicated that the risk-benefit tradeoff of an insect should be estimated at a community level involving multiple enemies(predators and parasites)and herbivores,rather than in a single prey-predator pair.

Habitat shift is a key innovation that has contributed to the extreme diversification of insects. Most groups are well-adapted to more or less specific environments and shifts usually only happen between similar habitats. To colonize a pro- foundly different habitat type does not only present ecological opportunities but also great challenges. We used Hydrophiloidea （water scavenger beetles） as a system to study transitions between terrestrial and aquatic environments. We estimated the diversi- fication rate of different clades using phylogenetic trees based on a representative taxon sampling and six genes. We also investi- gated possible evolutionary changes in candidate genes following habitat shifts. Our results suggest that the diversification rate is relatively slow （0.039-0.050 sp/My） in the aquatic lineage, whereas it is distinctly increased in the secondarily terrestrial clade （0.055-0.075 sp/My）. Our results also show that aquatic species have a G （Glycine） or S （Serine） amino acid at a given site of COI, while terrestrial species share an A （Alanine） amino acid with terrestrial outgroups. This indicates that habitat factors may create selection pressure on the evolution of functional genes and cause homoplasy in molecular evolution [Current Zoology 60 （5）： 561-570, 2014 ]

Clonostachys rosea is an ascomycetous fungal species commonly found in tropical and subtropical regions as a soil saprotroph,plant decomposer,and *** fungus is also well-known as a mycoparasite,exhibiting strong biological control ability against numerous fungal plant pathogens,nematodes and insect *** this study,we isolated for the first time *** as entomopathogen of the Coleoptera species Ophrida xanthospilota(Chrysomelidae) in *** infected *** insect individuals covered by white cottony mycelia were collected in April 2020 at Beijing Botanical Garden,Beijing,*** were isolated from small portions of mycelia excised from outside and inside of the infected insect species and identified based on morphological observations and molecular methods.A total of five fungal species were isolated from the analyzed insect,including ***,Fusarium verticillioides,***,***,and Aspergillus *** rosea was apparently the primary insect pathogen,because it was isolated from both outside and inside tissues of the insect,while Fusarium and Aspergillus strains were only isolated from the external surface of the insect *** analysis revealed that the sequence obtained from the isolated Clonostachys strain was closely related to *** previously found from the nest of white stork Ciconia ciconia in *** rosea from Massachusetts in USA and *** *** from soil of Utah(USA) also revealed phylogenetically close relationships with our isolated *** rosea *** is characterized by greenish conidial masses,which were not present in our *** isolates,showing white mycelium masses on PDA *** finding provides new evidence for the rare life mode of *** as insect pathogen,extending our knowledge of the occurrence and distribution of entomopathogenic fungi of the Coleoptera species *** analyzed fungus was never repo

BACKGROUND Type II diabetes mellitus(T2DM)has been associated with increased risk of colon cancer(CC)and worse prognosis in patients with *** effects of T2DM on postoperative chemoresistance rate(CRR)and long-term disease-free survival(DFS)and overall survival(OS)in patients with stage III CC who receive curative resection remain *** To investigate whether T2DM or glycemic control is associated with worse postoperative survival outcomes in stage III *** This retrospective cohort study included 278 patients aged 40-75 years who underwent surgery for stage III CC from 2018 to *** on preoperative T2DM history,the patients were categorized into non-DM(n=160)and DM groups(n=118).The latter was further divided into well-controlled(n=73)and poorly controlled(n=45)groups depending on the status of glycemic ***,OS,and CRR were compared between the groups and Cox regression analysis was used to identify risk *** Patients in the DM and non-DM groups demonstrated similar DFS,OS,and CRR(DFS:72.03%vs 78.75%,P=0.178;OS:81.36%vs 83.12%,P=0.638;CRR:14.41%vs 7.5%,P=0.063).Poorly controlled DM was associated with a significantly worse prognosis and higher CRR than well-controlled DM(DFS:62.22%vs 78.07%,P=0.021;OS:71.11%vs 87.67%,P=0.011;CRR:24.40%vs 8.22%,P=0.015).High preoperative fasting plasma glucose[DFS:Hazard ratio(HR)=2.684,P<0.001;OS:HR=2.105,P=0.019;CRR:HR=2.214,P=0.005]and glycosylated hemoglobin levels(DFS:HR=2.344,P=0.006;OS:HR=2.119,P=0.021;CRR:HR=2.449,P=0.009)indicated significantly poor prognosis and high CRR,while T2DM history did not(DFS:HR=1.178,P=0.327;OS:HR=0.933,P=0.739;CRR:HR=0.997,P=0.581).CONCLUSION Increased preoperative fasting plasma glucose and glycosylated hemoglobin levels,but not T2DM history,were identified as risk factors associated with poor postoperative outcomes and high CRR in patients with stage III CC.

Exergy analysis and performance enhancement of isopropanol-acetone-hydrogen chemical heat pump

Exergy loss analysis was conducted to identify the irreversibility in each component of the isopropanol- acetone-hydrogen chemical heat pump （IAH-CHP）. The results indicate that the highest irreversibility on a system basis occurs in the distillation column. Moreover, the effect of operating parameters on thermodynamic performances of the IAH-CHP was studied and the optimal conditions were obtained. Finally, the potential methods to reduce the irreversibility of the IAH-CHP system were investigated. It is found that reactive distillation is apromising alternative. The enthalpy and exergy efficiency of the IAH-CHP with reactive distillation increases by 24.1% and 23.2%, respectively.

Irradiation Effects in Ni–17Mo–7Cr Alloy Bombarded with MeV Au Ions

Irradiation effects in Ni–17Mo–7Cr alloy have been systematically investigated by using 3 Me V Au ions at different fluences ranging from 8 × 10^13cm^-2to 2.3 × 10^15cm^-2,corresponding to doses of 1–30 *** results indicated that sample microstrain increased gradually from 0.14 to 0.22% as dose increased from 0 to 30 ***,the nanohardness of Ni–17Mo–7Cr alloy increased with irradiation dose until 10 dpa,and then,softening effect became dominant while further increasing dose to 30 *** being irradiated at room temperature,the swelling rate of Ni–17Mo–7Cr alloy was found to be around 0.04% per *** data are helpful in estimating the irradiation resistance of this newly developed Ni–17Mo–7Cr alloy in nuclear energy systems.

Effect of vibration frequency on primary phase and properties of grey cast iron fabricated by lost foam casting

The properties of gray cast iron(GCI)are affected by density of matrix,size of flake graphite and primary *** this paper,the Y-type specimen of GCI was prepared by lost foam casting(LFC)with and without vibration,and the influence of vibration frequency on the density of matrix,size of primary phase,and properties of the GCI was *** results show that the length of the flake graphite and the size of the primary austenite in GCI firstly decrease and then increase with the increase of the vibration *** a vibration frequency of 35 Hz,the length of the flake graphite is the shortest,the primary austenite is the finest and the density of the matrix is the *** addition,the tensile strength,elongation and hardness of the GCI firstly increase and then decrease with the increase of the vibration frequency,due to the refinement of the primary phase and the increase of the matrix *** order to analyze the refinement mechanism of the primary phase of the GCI fabricated by the LFC with vibration,the solidification temperature fields of the GCI fabricated by the LFC with the vibration frequency of 0 and 35 Hz were *** results show that the vibration reduces the eutectic point of the GCI and increases the supercooling degree during the eutectic *** a result,the length of the flake graphite and the size of the primary austenite in GCI fabricated by LFC with the vibration frequency of 35 Hz decrease.
