The year 2018 marks the 20th anniversary of the coining of the term‘Digital Earth’and also ten years since the International Journal of Digital Earth(IJDE)was inaugurated in 2008.With these important milestones in mind,I feel that it is worth reviewing the academic achievements that have been made and the developments that have taken place in the field of Digital Earth.

Big data is a revolutionary innovation that has allowed the development of many new methods in scientific research.This new way of thinking has encouraged the pursuit of new discoveries.Big data occupies the strategic high ground in the era of knowledge economies and also constitutes a new national and global strategic resource.“Big Earth data”,derived from,but not limited to,Earth observation has macro-level capabilities that enable rapid and accurate monitoring of the Earth,and is becoming a new frontier contributing to the advancement of Earth science and significant scientific discoveries.Within the context of the development of big data,this paper analyzes the characteristics of scientific big data and recognizes its great potential for development,particularly with regard to the role that big Earth data can play in promoting the development of Earth science.On this basis,the paper outlines the Big Earth Data Science Engineering Project(CASEarth)of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Strategic Priority Research Program.Big data is at the forefront of the integration of geoscience,information science,and space science and technology,and it is expected that big Earth data will provide new prospects for the development of Earth science.

Future Earth,a 10-year international research programme jointly initiated by the ICSU(International Council for Science)and the ISSC(International Social Science Council),was launched in June 2012 at the UN conference on Sustainable Development(Rio+20).Building on existing international global environmental change projects,Future Earth aims to provide a new platform for consolidating the knowledge and support needed to accelerate our transformation to a sustainable world.It will connect the world’s scientists across regions and across disciplines to work together under a unifying framework and will focus on three research themes:Dynamic Planet,Global Sustainable Development and Transformations towards Sustainability(Future Earth 2014).

Launched in 2008,the International Journal of Digital Earth(IJDE)–an official journal of the International Society for Digital Earth–will enter its 15th year in 2022.In the years since its launch,authors,readers and reviewers,as well as the editorial board and editors of the journal,have witnessed the IJDE go from strength to strength.The IJDE was first indexed by the SCIE 18 months after its launch and has since improved its ranking in the Journal Citation Report’s Impact Factor List.The journal has also progressed from quarterly to bimonthly and then monthly publication.All of this demonstrates how the IJDE has steadily progressed to become a high-standard publication with an international reputation that has been indexed by 14 international indexing databases.Each step in the IJDE’s development can be attributed to the high quality of the published papers,as well as to contributions of reviewers and the support of readers.

Antarctica plays an important role in research on global change,and its unique geography,ocean,climate,and environment pro-vide an ideal place for humankind to understand Earth’s evolution.Remote sensing provides an effective means to monitor and observe large-scale processes on the continent.Synthetic aperture radar(SAR)in particular provides the capability for all-weather Earth observation.The Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B SAR satellites have ideal ground coverage and imaging frequency for observing Antarctica.This study developed a dataset of 69,586 Sentinel-1 EW mode satellite images of the Antarctic ice sheet from October 2014 to December 2020.The dataset was processed with the European Space Agency Sentinel Application Platform(SNAP)and a Python batch scheduling tool on the Big Earth Data Cloud Service Platform of the Chinese Academy of Sciences Big Earth Data Science Engineering Program(CASEarth).Several data processing operations were implemented to process the raw dataset,including radiometric calibration,invalid edge removal,geocoding,data reprojection to an Antarctic projection,data compression to TIFF format,and construction of image pyramids.The dataset is avail-able at http://***/10.11922/sciencedb.j00076.00085.

As the most sensitive and direct indicator of global climate change,the freezing and thawing of the Antarctic ice sheet is of great significance for research on surface mass and energy balance.In this study,four representative regions in Antarctica were selected and correlation analysis,Granger causality testing,and cluster analysis were applied to comprehensively analyze the correlation and response of spatiotemporal variation in freeze-thaw and temperature.The conclusions are as follows.(1)In the Antarctic Peninsula,a phenomenon was demonstrated that the summer shifts rearward.Hotter December and colder March temperatures were observed in the Amery Ice Shelf and Queen Maud Land.(2)The Antarctic Peninsula featured the most severe degree of melting among the four regions,with the largest melt area in the past 30 years appearing during the 2015/2016 season.However,the number of melt days in most areas of the Antarctic Peninsula was observed to have decreased.(3)There is a strong correlation between the freeze-thaw state of the Antarctic ice sheet and temperature,as well as spatial differences among regions,but the data were clustered at different time scales.

Improving tree health assessment accuracy at low temperatures:considering the effect of trunk ice content on electrical resistance and stress wave tomography

Accurate decay detection and health assessment of trees at low temperatures is an important issue for forest management and ecology in cold areas.Low temperature ice formation on tree health assessment is unknown.Because electric resistance tomography and stress wave tomography are two widely used methods for the detection of tree decay,this study investigated the effect of ice content on trunk electrical resistance and stress wave velocity to improve tree health assessment accuracy.Moisture content,trunk electrical resistance and stress wave velocity using time domain reflectometry were carried out on Larix gmelinii and Populus simonii.Ice content is based on moisture content data.The ice content of both species showed a trend of increasing and then decreasing.This was opposite with ambient temperatures.With the decrease of temperatures,daily average ice content increased,but the range narrowed gradually and both electrical resistance and stress wave velocity increased.Both increased rapidly near 0℃,mainly caused by ice formation(phase change and freezing of free water)in live trees.In addition,both are positively correlated with ice content.The results suggest that ice content should be considered for improving the accuracy of tree decay detection and health evaluation using electric resistance tomography and stress wave velocity methods under low temperatures.
