Preliminary Results on Hydrological and Hydrochemical Features of Kartamak Glacier Area in Mt. Muztag Ata

The variations of the meltwater runoff draining from Kartamak Glacier in Mt. Muztag Ata in China were studied by using the measured hydrological data from 1 June to 25 August 2003. The meltwater runoff is mainly affected by ambient temperature and precipitation. Meltwater and precipitation samples were collected from 10 to 23 August 2003. Their pH, EC (electric conductivity) and the major ions (Na^+, K^+, Ca^(2+), Mg^(2+), Cl^-, NO_3^-, SO_~4^(2-)) were determined. pH values showed a positive correlation with EC values for all samples. Meltwater samples were slightly alkaline. Sulfate and calcium were the dominant anion and cation in the measured ions, respectively. All the ion concentrations had inverse relationships with runoff or water level. In order to discuss the origins of dissolved chemical substances in the glacial meltwater, a principal component analysis was carried out. The results showed that water-rock interaction determined the ion components of the meltwater.

In this paper, analytical and numerical studies are carried out on the full annular rub motions of a nonlinear Jeffcott rotor. Transition sets of the synchronous full annular rub are given with the help of averaging method and constraint bifurcation theory to discuss the effects of system parameters on jump phenomena. Routh-Hurwitz criteria are employed to analyze the stability of synchronous full annular rub solution and determine the boundaries of static and Hopf bifurcations. Finally, the response and onset condition of reverse dry whip are investigated numerically, and at the same time, the influences of rotor parameters and rotation speed on the characteristics of the rotor response are investigated.

The structural evolution of systems with two kinds of particles driven in opposite directions, i.e., driven by a color field, is investigated by molecular dynamics simulations. Gaussian thermostat, a common treatment to restrict the thermal velocity of the particles in the systems, has been used so as to account for the dissipation of heat and allow the system to reach a steady state. It has been found that with the increase of the strength of driving force （F）, the system undergoes an obvious structural transition from an initially random mixing state to a state characterized by separate lanes and in each lane only one kind of particles exists. The analysis shows that the reason for the formation of lane structure is not only the increase of F but also the variation of particle friction coefficient. While using Gaussian thermostat the particle friction coefficient becomes a function of F. Increasing F leads to high particle friction coefficient and inevitably results in lane formation for strong enough driving force. When lifting the effect of F on friction coefficient and choosing a constant friction coefficient, our results show that for a given F there always exists a critical value of friction coefficient higher than which the system will develop into lane structure.

The theory of flow similarity has not been well established for granular flows, in contrast to the case for conventional fluids, owing to a lack of reliable and general constitutive laws for their continuum descrip- tion. A rigorous investigation of the similarity of velocity fields in different granular systems would he valuable to theoretical studies. However, experimental measurements face technological and physical problems. Numerical simulations that employ the discrete element method （DEM） may be an alterna- tive to experiments by providing similar results, where quantitative analysis could be implemented with virtually no limitation. In this study, the similarity of velocity fields is investigated for the rolling regime of rotating drums by conducting simulations based on the DEM and using graphics processing units. For a constant Froude number, it is found that the particle-to-drum size ratio plays a dominant role in the determination of the velocity field, while the velocity field is much more sensitive to some material properties than to others. The implications of these findings are discussed in terms of establishing theoretical similarity laws for granular flows.

As a major alkaline gas in the atmosphere, ammonia (NH3) plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry. However, there is little knowledge about NH3 variations in the Central Asia. Here we ana- lyzed the ammonium (NH+4) history recorded in an ice core from the East Pamir in Central Asia, which was drilled on the Mt. Muztagata at the elevation of 7010 m a.s.l. in 2003. The core was carefully dated and NH4+ concentration history during 1907―2002 was reconstructed. The result shows that NH4+ con- centration remained approximately constant until the 1930s after a sudden decrease at the very begin- ning of the 20th century, followed by a minimum in 1940 before increasing steadily to the peak at the end of 1990s. It is found that the annual mean NH4+ concentration was strongly associated with the Northern Hemisphere temperature, suggesting the impact of temperature on NH3 emissions in the Central Asia. Moreover, an increase of NH+4 concentration after 1940 also reflects the enhancement of NH3 emissions from anthropogenic sources such as fertilizer applications and livestock wastes in the 20th century.

The craton is a long-lived stable geologic unit on the Earth’s ***,since the Mesozoic,the North China Craton(NCC)experienced large-scale lithospheric removal,the fundamental change of physical and chemical characteristics of the lithospheric mantle,widely distributed crustal deformation,and extensive *** complex evolution contrary to other cratons is called the NCC *** magmatism in the eastern NCC is an important response to the lithospheric removal at depth and crustal deformation on the *** plutons emplace under a tectonic context and therefore record the information of the tectonics;especially,the anisotropy magnetic susceptibility(AMS)pattern of the pluton was acquired with the influence of regional *** the past fifteen years,about 22 plutons intruding during the different periods from the Late Triassic to the late stage of the Early Cretaceous have been studied with *** emplacement mechanisms of plutons and the contemporary tectonic setting were discussed to constrain their relationship with the NCC destruction in different stages of *** a result,the Late Triassic,Early Jurassic,and Late Jurassic plutons exhibit consistent N(E)-S(W)trending magnetic *** early stage of Early Cretaceous plutons display NW-SE trending magnetic lineations,while the late stage of Early Cretaceous plutons show magnetic lineations with various *** with previous studies,it is concluded that the emplacements of the plutons intruding in these three stages were controlled by weak N(E)-S(W)trending extension,regional NW-SE trending extension,and weak extension in the shallow crustal level,*** transformation of regional extension from the N(E)-S(W)to the NW-SE direction was accompanied by a strain-increasing *** extensional tectonics in the eastern NCC was interpreted to represent the interaction between Mongol-Okhotsk belt,PaleoPacific plate,and eastern Eurasian continent

We previously identified human phosphatidylethanolamine-binding protein 4(hPEBP4)as an antiapoptotic protein with increased expression levels in breast,ovarian and prostate cancer cells,but low expression levels in normal tissues,which makes hPEBP4 an attractive target for ***,we developed hPEBP4-derived immunogenic peptides for inducing antigen-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes(CTLs)targeting breast cancer.A panel of hPEBP4-derived peptides predicted by peptide-MHC-binding algorithms was evaluated to characterize their HLAA2.1 affinity and *** identified a novel immunogenic peptide,P40–48(TLFCQGLEV),that was capable of eliciting specific CTL responses in HLA-A2.1/K^(b) transgenic mice,as well as in peripheral blood lymphocytes from breast cancer ***,amino-acid substitutions in the P40–48 sequence improved its immunogenicity against hPEBP4,a self-antigen,thus circumventing *** designed peptide analogs by preferred auxiliary HLA-A^(*)0201 anchor residue replacement,which induced CTLs that were crossreactive to the native *** analogs were able to stably bind to HLA-A^(*)0201 and elicit specific CTL responses better than the native ***,adoptive transfer of CTLs induced by vaccination with two analogs more effectively inhibited tumor growth than the native *** data indicate that peptide analogs with high immunogenicity represent promising candidates for peptide-mediated therapeutic cancer vaccines.

In vitro inhibition of HIV-1 replication in autologous CD4*T cells indicates viral containment by multifactorial mechanisms

HIV-1-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes(CTLs) and neutralizing antibodies(NAbs) are present during chronic infection, but the relative contributions of these effector mechanisms to viral containment remain unclear. Here, using an in vitro model involving autologous CD4+ T cells,primary HIV-1 isolates, HIV-1-specific CTLs, and neutralizing monoclonal antibodies, we show that b12, a potent and broadly neutralizing monoclonal antibody to HIV-1, was able to block viral infection when preincubated with virus prior to infection, but was much less effective than CTLs at limiting virus replication when added to infected cell cultures. However, the same neutralizing antibody was able to contain viruses by antibody-dependent cell-mediated virus inhibition in vitro,which was mediated by natural killer cells(NKs) and dependent on an Fc-Fc receptor ***, bulk CTLs from HIV-1 controllers were more effective in suppression of virus replication than those from progressors. These findings indicate that control of HIV-1 replication in activated CD4^+ T cells is ineffectively mediated by neutralizing antibodies alone, but that both CTLs and antibody-dependent NK-mediated immune mechanisms contribute to viral containment. Our study systemically compared three major players in controlling HIV-1 infection, CTLs, NAbs, and NKs, in an autologous system and highlighted the multifactorial mechanisms for viral containment and vaccine success.
