Influence of laser parameters on the microstructures and surface properties in laser surface modification of biomedical magnesium alloys

Biodegradable implants from magnesium(Mg)alloys have emerged in the biomedical field especially in the orthopedic and cardiovascular stent applications owing to their low density,high specific strength,excellent machinability,good biocompatibility,and *** primary shortcoming of Mg-based implants is their low corrosion resistance in the physiological environment,which results in premature mechanical integrity loss before adequate healing and the production of excessive hydrogen gas,which is harmful to the body tissues and negatively affects the biocompatibility of the *** surface modification has recently received attention because it can improve the surface properties such as surface chemistry,roughness,topography,corrosion resistance,wear resistance,hydrophilicity,and thus cell response to the surface of the *** composition and microstructures including textures and phases of laser-treated surfaces depend largely on the laser processing parameters(input laser power,laser scan velocity,frequency,pulse duration,pressure,gas circulation,working time,spot size,beam focal position,and laser track overlap)and the thermophysical properties of the substrate(solubility,melting point,and boiling point).This review investigates the impacts of various laser surface modification techniques including laser surface melting,laser surface alloying,laser cladding,laser surface texturing,and laser shock peening,and highlights their significance in improving the surface properties of biodegradable Mg alloys for implant ***,we explore how different laser process parameters affect its composition,microstructure,and surface properties in each laser surface modification technique.

Dietary supplementation with succinic acid improves growth performance and flesh quality of adult Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus)fed a high-carbohydrate diet

To evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation with succinic acid on growth performance,flesh quality,glucose,and lipid metabolism of Nile tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus)fed a high-carbohydrate diet(HCD),five iso-nitrogenous and iso-lipidic diets were prepared as follows:HCD(control group)consisting of 55%corn starch and HCD supplemented with 0.5%,1.0%,2.0%,and 4.0%succinic acid,*** with an initial body weight of 204.90±1.23 g randomly assigned to 15 tanks with 3 replicates per group and 10 fish per tank fed for 8 *** dietary succinic acid supplementation resulted in significant second-order polynomial relationship in the weight gain rate(WGR),specific growth rate(SGR),feed conversion ratio(FCR),protein efficiency rate(PER),viscerosomatic index,condition factor,and contents of muscular crude lipid and glycogen(P<0.05).The hepatosomatic index,mesenteric fat index,liver glycogen content and crude lipid contents of the whole-body and liver demonstrated significantly linear and second-order polynomial relationship(P<0.05).Quadratic curve model analysis based on WGR,SGR,PER,and FCR demonstrated that optimal supplementation with succinic acid in the HCD of Nile tilapia ranged from 1.83%to 2.43%.Fish fed with 1.0%succinic acid had higher muscular hardness,increased the contents of alkali-soluble hydroxyproline in collagen,docosahexaenoic acid(DHA)and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid(n-3PUFA)in muscle,and lower total fatty acid content in muscle(P<0.05)compared with the control *** to the control group,dietary supplementation with 1.0%succinic acid significantly increased the contents of total bounding amino acid(arginine,histidine,isoleucine,lysine,methionine,alanine,proline),total flavor amino acid(free aspartic acid),the catalase(CAT)activity and total antioxidant capacity,and the mRNA relative expression levels of CAT,superoxide dismutase(SOD),and nuclearfactor erythroidderived 2-like 2(Nrf2)in muscle(P<0.05).Furthermore,succini

Wearable electromagnetic interference(EMI)shielding fabrics with excellent electromagnetic shielding performance,oxidation resistance,and structural stability are highly demanded for the rapid development of electronic devices and wireless *** are metallic conductive materials with exceptional EMI shielding properties,but they are prone to oxidation in air and have poor structural stability and durability on fabric ***,we present a one-step assembly method to fabricate fabrics coated with MXenes and polymeric sodium alginate(SA)composite(MXene-SA).SA protects MXenes from oxidation and forms a stable interlayer structure by bonding to *** MXene-SA coated fabrics are breathable and flexible,and have a low sheet resistance of 2.12±0.08Ω/sq and a high EMI shielding performance of 37.05 dB at X-band,which is comparable to the best 42.31 ***,the MXene-SA coated fabrics exhibit high structural stability and oxidation resistance under various conditions of sonication disintegration,mechanical abuse,chemical corrosion,and humidity,compared to pure MXenes coated *** believe that the wearable and high-performance MXene-SA fabrics have great potential for the next generation of ultra-portable and wearable EMI shielding products.

Enhancing growth, liver health, and bile acid metabolism of tilapia(Oreochromis niloticus) through combined cholesterol and bile acid supplementation in plant-based diets

The present study aimed to compare the nutritional effects of cholesterol, bile acids, and combination of cholesterol with bile acids in plant-based diets on juvenile genetically improved farmed tilapia(GIFT;Oreochromis niloticus). The isonitrogenous(321 g/kg crude protein) and isolipidic(76 g/kg crude fat) diets(Con diet) were based on plant protein sources, which included corn gluten meal, soybean meal, cottonseed meal and rapeseed meal. The Con diet was supplemented with 12 g/kg cholesterol(CHO diet), 0.2 g/kg bile acids(BAs diet), a combination of 12 g/kg cholesterol and 0.2 g/kg bile acids(CHO-BAs diet),respectively. Each diet was fed to three tanks in an indoor recirculating aquaculture system for 9 *** showed that compared to the Con group, fish had a higher weight gain rate, hepatosomatic index,and a lower feed conversion ratio in the CHO-BAs group. The highest levels of whole-fish fat and ash were found in the Con group. Serum parameters, including activities of alanine aminotransferase(ALT) and aspartate transaminase(AST), along with levels of glucose(GLU) and triglyceride(TG) except for total cholesterol(TCHO), were lower in the CHO, BAs, and CHO-BAs groups than those in the Con group(P <0.001). Histological examination revealed that fish in the Con group exhibited severe hepatocyte vacuolization and diminished hepatocyte proliferation. Gene expression analysis indicated that the transcriptional levels of bile acid metabolism-related genes(including fxr, fgf19, bsep) were up-regulated in the CHO-BAs group(P < 0.05), whereas cholesterol metabolism-related genes(acly and hmgcr) were downregulated in both CHO and CHO-BAs groups(P < 0.001). Moreover, UPLC-MS/MS analysis revealed that the higher taurine-conjugated bile acids(T-BAs), followed by free bile acids(Free-BAs) and glycine(G-BAs)were determined in tilapia bile. The counterion-mediated hydrogen bonding(CMHB)is related to the hydrogen bonding between bound counterions and polyelectrolyte chains in polyelectrolyte systems,where the counterions can both electrostatically bind to the charged groups of polyelectrolyte chains and act as hydrogen bond donors or acceptors to form hydrogen bonds with the hydrogen bond sites associated with polyelectrolyte chains simultaneously.A large number of literatures illustrate that strong polyelectrolytes(SPs)are insensitive to pH,which severely limmits the applications of SPs as smart ***,our studies have demonstrated that the CMHB makes SPs *** perspective discusses the mechanism of pH responsiveness of SPs and the pH-tunable properties of SPs,based on the pH-controlled CMHB *** future research directions on the pH responsiveness of SPs are also discussed *** is anticipated that the study of the pH responsiveness of SPs not only will provide a new understanding of the fundamental properties of SPs,but also will greatly expand the applications of SPs in the field of smart materials.

Vortex identification based on the Liutex method and its effect on fish passage upstream

Fishway research is important for mitigating the fragmentation of river habitats caused by hydraulic *** vertical slit fishway is a broadly used fishway type because of its high efficiency and adaptability to water ***,the resulting vortex current disrupts the fish passage hence directly affecting fish *** study aims to accurately capture the vortex structure in the fishway and analyze the effect of vortex elements(vortex structure,vortex intensity,etc.)on *** conducted an analysis of the 3-D current flow field in the fishway through the utilization of an experimental model and the large eddy simulation(LES)***,we captured the vortex information in the fishway at different flow rates using the Liutex vortex identification method and investigated the effect of the vortex on fish *** results revealed that the structures inside the fishway pool occupy most of the room,however,the areas with higher vortex strength were primarily located in the vortex near the vertical seam and the mainstream,the vortex strength inside the fishway gradually increases with increasing flow,suppressing fish *** experienced significantly increased resistance when encountering strong *** suggests that the vortex may act as a physical barrier to fish *** findings highlight the potential negative effects of vortex on fish movement and reiterate the importance of understanding vortex dynamics for aquatic environmental *** an effective tool for identifying vortices in fluid flow,the Liutex method demonstrates features of vortex within the fishway,thereby providing important insights into the interaction between fluid dynamics and aquatic organisms.

Investigation of Maxima Assumptions in Modelling Tropical Cyclone- Induced Hazards in the South China Sea

The present study aims to examine the suitability of two commonly used assumptions that simplify modelling metoceanconditions for designing offshore wind turbines in the South China Sea (SCS). The first assumption assumes thatjoint N-year extreme wind and wave events can be independently estimated and subsequently combined. The secondone assumes peak wind and waves can be modelled as occurring simultaneously during a tropical cyclone (TC) *** better understand the potential TC activity, a set of 10000 years synthetic TC events are generated. The wind fieldmodel and the Mike 21 spectral wave model are employed to model the TC-induced hazards. Subsequently, theeffect of the assumptions is evaluated by analyzing the peak structural response of both monopile and semisubmersibleoffshore wind turbines during TC events. The results demonstrate that the examined assumptions are generally *** assessing the implications of these assumptions, valuable insights are obtained, which can inform andimprove the modelling of TC-induced hazards in the SCS region.
