Endemic medicinal plant distribution correlated with stable climate,precipitation,and cultural diversity

Medicinal plants provide crucial ecosystem services,especially in developing countries such as China,which harbors diverse endemic medicinal plant species with substantial cultural and economic value.Accordingly,understanding the patterns and drivers of medicinal plant distribution is critical.However,few studies have investigated the patterns and drivers of endemic medicinal plants distribution in China.Here,we linked endemic medicinal plants distribution with possible explanatory variables,i.e.,paleoclimate change,contemporary climate,altitudinal range and ethnic minority human population size at the prefecture city level in China.Our results show that endemic medicinal plants are concentrated in southern China,especially in southwestern China.Notably,both endemic medicinal plant species richness and the ratio of endemic medicinal plant species richness are negatively associated with glacialinterglacial anomaly in temperature,and positively associated with contemporary precipitation and altitudinal range.In addition,we found that endemic medicinal plant species richness is positively associated with ethnic minority population sizes as well as its ratio to the overall population size.These findings suggest that the distribution of endemic medicinal plants is determined by multiple drivers.Furthermore,our findings stress that dramatic future climate changes and massive anthropogenic activities in southern China pose great challenges to the conservation of China's endemic medicinal plants.

Alzheimer's disease(AD)is one of the most common age-related neurodegenerative disorders that have been studied for more than 100 years.Although an increased level of amyloid precursor protein is considered a key contributor to the development of AD,the exact pathogenic mechanism remains known.Multiple factors are related to AD,such as genetic factors,aging,lifestyle,and nutrients.Both epidemiological and clinical evidence has shown that the levels of micronutrients,such as copper,zinc,and iron,are closely related to the development of AD.In this review,we summarize the roles of eight micronutrients,including copper,zinc,iron,selenium,silicon,manganese,arsenic,and vitamin D in AD based on recently published studies.

Improved formation density measurement using controllable D-D neutron source and its lithological correction for porosity prediction

Controllable D-D neutron sources have a long service life,low cost,and non-radioactivity.There are favorable prospects for its application in geophysical well logging,since traditional chemical radioactive sources used for well logging pose potential threats to the safety of the human body and environment.This paper presents an improved method to measure formation density that employs a D-D neutron source.In addition,the lithological effect on the measured density was removed to better estimate the formation porosity.First,we investigated the spatial distribution of capture gamma rays through Monte Carlo simulations as well as the relationship between the ratio of capture gamma ray counts and formation density to establish theoretical support for the design of density logging tools and their corresponding data processing methods.Second,we obtained the far to near detector counts of captured gamma rays for an optimized tool structure and then established its correlation with the density and porosity of three typical formations with pure quartz,calcite,and dolomite minerals.Third,we determined the values for correcting the densities of sandstone and dolomite with the same porosity using limestone data as the reference and established the equations for calculating the correction values,which lays a solid foundation for accurately calculating formation porosity.We observed that the capture gamma ray counts first increased then decreased and varied in different formations;this was especially observed in high-porosity formations.Under the same lithologic conditions(rock matrix),as the porosity increases,the peak value of gamma ray counts moves toward the neutron source.At different detector-source distances,the ratio of the capture gamma ray counts was well correlated with the formation density.An equation of the formation density conversion was established based on the ratio of capture gamma ray counts at the detector-source distances of 30 cm and 65 cm,and the calculated values were consistent with the true values.Af

Optical scattering imaging with sub-nanometer precision based on position-ultra-sensitive giant Lamb shift

The Lamb shift of a quantum emitter in close proximity to a plasmonic nanostructure can be three or more orders of magnitude larger than that in the free space and is ultra-sensitive to the emitter position and polarization.We demonstrate that this large Lamb shift can be sensitively observed from the scattering or absorption spectrum dip shift of the coupled system when the plasmonic nanoparticle or tip scans the emitter.Using these observations,we propose a scanning optical scattering imaging method based on the plasmonic-enhanced Lamb shift with achieves sub-nanometer resolution.Our method is based on the scattering or absorption spectrum of the plasmon-emitter coupling system,which is free of the fluorescence quenching problem and easier to implement in a plasmon-emitter coupling system.In addition,our scheme works even if the quantum emitter is slightly below the dielectric surface,which can bring about broader applications,such as detecting atoms and molecules or quantum dots above or under a surface.

Splenic infarction(SI)is a rare clinical phenomenon that occurs when the blood supply to the spleen is interrupted,resulting in tissue ischemia and necrosis[1].There are many causes of SI;in adult patients,cardioembolism,hematological malignancy,and infectious disease are the most common[2].Rheumatic diseases,especially systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE)and granulomatosis with polyangitis,can also lead to SI[3];however,only a few cases have been reported.There are currently no statistically meaningful data on the etiology of SI in children.Although most patients with SI can recover after conservative treatment,a small number of patients develop complications,such as splenic abscess,splenic rupture,splenic hemorrhage,and hemoperitoneum,and may even undergo splenectomy in severe cases.

Atroposelective Synthesis of 2-Arylindoles via Chiral Phosphoric Acid-Catalyzed Direct Amination of Indoles

Indole-based atropisomers are a very important class of axially chiral compounds.However,the atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral 2-arylindole remains largely unexplored.In this study,we report the successful synthesis of atropisomeric 2-arylindoles using direct amination of indoles with p-quinonediimines in the presence of chiral phosphoric acid as a catalyst.Quinonediimine acts as an aminating reagent through formal polarity inversion of imine.The malonate group on the 2-aryl of 2-indoles was found to be essen-tial for high enantioselectivity of the products.This could be due to the additional interaction between the ester group and the cata-lyst,as well as the intramolecular hydrogen bonding.Our findings provide a new strategy for the asymmetric construction of 2-arylindole atropisomers.

Cisplatin-based miRNA delivery strategy inspired by the circCPNE1/miR-330-3p pathway for oral squamous cell carcinoma

Circular RNAs(circRNAs)are ideal biomarkers of oral squamous cell carcinoma(OSCC)because of their highly stable closed-loop structure,and they can act as microRNA(miRNA)sponges to regulate OSCC progression.By analyzing clinical samples,we identified circCPNE1,a dysregulated circRNA in OSCC,and its expression level was negatively correlated with the clinical stage of OSCC patients.Gain-of-function assays revealed the tumor-suppressive effect of circCPNE1,which was then identified as a miR-330-3p sponge.MiR-330-3p was recognized as a tumor promoter in multiple studies,consistent with our finding that it could promote the proliferation,migration,and invasion of OSCC cells.These results indicated that selective inhibition of miR-330-3p could be an effective strategy to inhibit OSCC progression.Therefore,we designed cationic polylysine-cisplatin prodrugs to deliver antagomiR-330-3p(a miRNA inhibitory analog)via electrostatic interactions to form PP@miR nanoparticles(NPs).Paratumoral administration results revealed that PP@miR NPs effectively inhibited subcutaneous tumor progression and achieved partial tumor elimination(2/5),which confirmed the critical role of miR-330-3p in OSCC development.These findings provide a new perspective for the development of OSCC treatments.

Intelligent diagnosis of retinal vein occlusion based on color fundus photographs

AIM:To develop an artificial intelligence(AI)diagnosis model based on deep learning(DL)algorithm to diagnose different types of retinal vein occlusion(RVO)by recognizing color fundus photographs(CFPs).METHODS:Totally 914 CFPs of healthy people and patients with RVO were collected as experimental data sets,and used to train,verify and test the diagnostic model of RVO.All the images were divided into four categories[normal,central retinal vein occlusion(CRVO),branch retinal vein occlusion(BRVO),and macular retinal vein occlusion(MRVO)]by three fundus disease experts.Swin Transformer was used to build the RVO diagnosis model,and different types of RVO diagnosis experiments were conducted.The model’s performance was compared to that of the experts.RESULTS:The accuracy of the model in the diagnosis of normal,CRVO,BRVO,and MRVO reached 1.000,0.978,0.957,and 0.978;the specificity reached 1.000,0.986,0.982,and 0.976;the sensitivity reached 1.000,0.955,0.917,and 1.000;the F1-Sore reached 1.000,0.9550.943,and 0.887 respectively.In addition,the area under curve of normal,CRVO,BRVO,and MRVO diagnosed by the diagnostic model were 1.000,0.900,0.959 and 0.970,respectively.The diagnostic results were highly consistent with those of fundus disease experts,and the diagnostic performance was superior.CONCLUSION:The diagnostic model developed in this study can well diagnose different types of RVO,effectively relieve the work pressure of clinicians,and provide help for the follow-up clinical diagnosis and treatment of RVO patients.

Predictive model using four ferroptosis-related genes accurately predicts gastric cancer prognosis

BACKGROUND Gastric cancer(GC)is a common malignancy of the digestive system.According to global 2018 cancer data,GC has the fifth-highest incidence and the thirdhighest fatality rate among malignant tumors.More than 60%of GC are linked to infection with Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori),a gram-negative,active,microaerophilic,and helical bacterium.This parasite induces GC by producing toxic factors,such as cytotoxin-related gene A,vacuolar cytotoxin A,and outer membrane proteins.Ferroptosis,or iron-dependent programmed cell death,has been linked to GC,although there has been little research on the link between H.pylori infection-related GC and ferroptosis.AIM To identify coregulated differentially expressed genes among ferroptosis-related genes(FRGs)in GC patients and develop a ferroptosis-related prognostic model with discrimination ability.METHODS Gene expression profiles of GC patients and those with H.pylori-associated GC were obtained from The Cancer Genome Atlas and Gene Expression Omnibus(GEO)databases.The FRGs were acquired from the FerrDb database.A ferroptosis-related gene prognostic index(FRGPI)was created using least absolute shrinkage and selection operator–Cox regression.The predictive ability of the FRGPI was validated in the GEO cohort.Finally,we verified the expression of the hub genes and the activity of the ferroptosis inducer FIN56 in GC cell lines and tissues.RESULTS Four hub genes were identified(NOX4,MTCH1,GABARAPL2,and SLC2A3)and shown to accurately predict GC and H.pylori-associated GC.The FRGPI based on the hub genes could independently predict GC patient survival;GC patients in the high-risk group had considerably worse overall survival than did those in the low-risk group.The FRGPI was a significant predictor of GC prognosis and was strongly correlated with disease progression.Moreover,the gene expression levels of common immune checkpoint proteins dramatically increased in the highrisk subgroup of the FRGPI cohort.The hub genes were also confirmed to be highly overexpressed in GC cell line

Efficacy of Raw Corn Starch in Insulinoma-Related Hypoglycemia:A Promising Supportive Therapy

Objective To investigate the efficacy of raw corn starch(RCS)in clinical management of insulinoma-induced hypoglycemia.Methods We retrospectively collected clinical data of insulinoma patients who received RCS-supplemented diet preoperatively,and analyzed the therapeutic effects of the RCS intervention on blood glucose control,weight change,and its adverse events.Results The study population consisted of 24 cases of insulinoma patients,7 males and 17 females,aged 46.08±14.15 years.Before RCS-supplemented diet,all patients had frequent hypoglycemic episodes(2.51±3.88 times/week),concurrent with neuroglycopenia(in 83.3% of patients)and autonomic manifestations(in 75.0% of patients),with the median fasting blood glucose(FBG)of 2.70(interquartile range[IQR]:2.50-2.90)mmol/L.The patients'weight increased by 0.38(IQR:0.05-0.65)kg per month,with 8(33.3%)cases developing overweight and 7(29.2%)cases developing obesity.All patients maintained the RCS-supplemented diet until they underwent tumor resection(23 cases)and transarterial chemoembolization for liver metastases(1 case).For 19 patients receiving RCS throughout the day,the median FBG within one week of nutritional management was 4.30(IQR:3.30-5.70)mmol/L,which was a significant increase compared to pre-nutritional level[2.25(IQR:1.60-2.90)mmol/L;Pweight gain was observed upon RCS supplementation.Mild diarrhea(2 cases)and flatulence(1 case)occurred,and were relieved by reduction of RCS dose.Conclusion The RCS-supplemented diet is effective in contro
