Objective To explore the association between soil selenium levels and the risk of diabetes in Chinese adults aged 35–74 *** Data for this study were derived from the China Chronic Diseases and Behavioral Risk Factors Surveillance 2010 *** concentrations in soil were obtained from the Atlas of Soil Environmental Background Values in China.A two-level binary logistic regression model was used to determine the association between soil selenium concentrations and the risk of diabetes,with participants nested within districts/*** A total of 69,332 participants aged 35–74 years,from 158 districts/counties were included in the *** of selenium in soil varied greatly across the 158 districts/counties,with a median concentration of 0.219 mg/kg(IQR:0.185–0.248).The results showed that both Quartile 1(0.119–0.185 mg/kg)and Quartile 4(0.249–0.344 mg/kg)groups were positively associated with diabetes compared to a soil selenium concentration of 0.186–0.219 mg/kg(Quartile 2),crude odds ratios(ORs)(95%CI)were 1.227(1.003–1.502)and 1.280(1.048–1.563).The P values were 0.045 and 0.013,for Quartile 1 and Quartile 4 groups,*** adjusting for all confounding factors of interest,the Quartile 1 group became non-significant,and the Quartile 4 group had an adjusted OR(95%CI)of 1.203(1.018–1.421)relative to the reference group(Quartile 2),the P values was *** significant results were seen for the Quartile 3 group(0.220–0.248 mg/kg)compared to the reference *** Excessive selenium concentrations in soil could increase the risk of diabetes among Chinese adults aged 35–74 years.

Dear Editor,NK cells are the first cells reconstituted after Allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation(allo-HSCT)(Raulet and Vance,2006;Zhao et al.,2007).The roles of alloreactive NK cells are conflicting in allogeneic transplantation,mainly because several factors influence the reconstitution of NK cells,including different transplantation conditioning regimens,disease backgrounds and graft-versus-host disease(GVHD)prophylaxis(Zhao et al.,2011).

Innovations in genomics have enabled the development of low-cost,high-resolution,single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)genotyping arrays that accelerate breeding progress and support basic research in crop ***,we developed and validated the Soy SNP618 K array(618,888 SNPs)for the important crop *** SNPs were selected from whole-genome resequencing data containing 2,214 diverse soybean accessions;29.34%of the SNPs mapped to genic regions representing 86.85%of the 56,044annotated high-confidence ***-by-state analyses of 318 soybeans revealed 17 redundant accessions,highlighting the potential of the Soy SNP618 K array in supporting gene bank *** patterns of population stratification and genomic regions enriched through domestication were highly consistent with previous findings based on resequencing data,suggesting that the ascertainment bias in the Soy SNP618 K array was largely compensated ***-wide association mapping in combination with reported quantitative trait loci enabled fine-mapping of genes known to influence flowering time,E2 and Gm PRR3 b,and of a new candidate gene,Gm ***,genomic prediction of flowering and maturity time in 502 recombinant inbred lines was highly accurate(>0.65).Thus,the Soy SNP618 K array is a valuable genomic tool that can be used to address many questions in applied breeding,germplasm management,and basic crop research.

The Omicron variant of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS‑CoV‑2)infected a substantial proportion of Chinese population,and understanding the factors underlying the severity of the disease and fatality is valuable for future prevention and clinical *** recruited 64 patients with invasive ventilation for COVID-19 and performed metatranscriptomic sequencing to profile host transcriptomic profiles,plus viral,bacterial,and fungal content,as well as virulence factors and examined their relationships to 28-day mortality were *** addition,the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid(BALF)samples from invasive ventilated hospital/community-acquired pneumonia patients(HAP/CAP)sampled in 2019 were included for *** analysis revealed that all Omicron strains belong to BA.5 and BF.7 sub-lineages,with no difference in 28-day mortality between *** to HAP/CAP cohort,invasive ventilated COVID-19 patients have distinct host transcriptomic and microbial signatures in the lower respiratory tract;and in the COVID-19 non-survivors,we found significantly lower gene expressions in pathways related viral processes and positive regulation of protein localization to plasma membrane,higher abundance of opportunistic pathogens including bacterial Alloprevotella,Caulobacter,Escherichia-Shigella,Ralstonia and fungal Aspergillus sydowii and Penicillium *** analysis further revealed significant associations between host immune responses and microbial compositions,besides synergy within viral,bacterial,and fungal *** study presents the relationships of lower respiratory tract microbiome and transcriptome in invasive ventilated COVID-19 patients,providing the basis for future clinical treatment and reduction of fatality.

A genome-wide association study(GWAS)identifies trait-associated loci,but identifying the causal genes can be a bottleneck,due in part to slow decay of linkage disequilibrium(LD).A transcriptome-wide association study(TWAS)addresses this issue by identifying gene expression-phenotype associations or integrating gene expression quantitative trait loci with GWAS ***,we used self-pollinated soybean(Glycine max[L.]Merr.)as a model to evaluate the application of TWAS to the genetic dissection of traits in plant species with slow LD *** generated RNA sequencing data for a soybean diversity panel and identified the genetic expression regulation of 29286 soybean *** TWAS solutions were less affected by LD and were robust to the source of expression,identifing known genes related to traits from different tissues and developmental *** novel pod-color gene L2 was identified via TWAS and functionally validated by genome *** introducing a new exon proportion feature,we significantly improved the detection of expression variations that resulted from structural variations and alternative *** a result,the genes identified through our TWAS approach exhibited a diverse range of causal variations,including SNPs,insertions or deletions,gene fusion,copy number variations,and alternative *** this approach,we identified genes associated with flowering time,including both previously known genes and novel genes that had not previously been linked to this trait,providing insights complementary to those from *** summary,this study supports the application of TWAS for candidate gene identification in species with low rates of LD decay.

Objective To study the optimal waist circumference （WC） cut-off values for identifying metabolic risk factors in middle-aged and elderly subjects in Shandong Province of China. Methods A total of 2 873 men and 5 559 women were included in this cross-sectional study. Metabolic syndrome （MetS） was diagnosed according to the definition of Chinese Diabetes Society in 2004. The relation between WC and MetS was analyzed by multivariate logistic regression analysis. The optimal WC cut-off values were identified using the area under the ROC curve and the different diagnostic criteria for central obesity were compared. Results The WC was the risk factor for MetS independent of BMI, blood glucose, blood lipid, and blood pressure. The optimal WC cut-off value was 83.8 cm and 91.1 cm for identifying MetS in women and men, respectively. Compared with 80 cm and 85 cm for women and men, 85 cm and 90 cm had a higher Youden index for identifying all metabolic risk factors and MetS in women and men.
