Graphitized Cu-β-cyclodextrin polymer driving an efficient dual-reaction-center Fenton-like process by utilizing electrons of pollutants for water purification

Excessive consumption of energy and resources is a major challenge in wastewater treatment.Here,a novel heterogeneous Fenton-like catalyst consisting of Cu-doped graphenelike catalysts (Cu-GCD NSs) was first synthesized by an enhanced carbothermal reduction of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD).The catalyst exhibits excellent Fenton-like catalytic activity for the degradation of various pollutants under neutral conditions,accompanied by low H_(2)O_(2)consumption.The results of structural characterization and theoretical calculations confirmed that the dual reaction centers (DRCs) were constructed on Cu-GCD NSs surface through C-O-Cu bonds supported on zero-valent copper species,which play a significant role in the high-performance Fenton-like reaction.The pollutants that served as electron donors were decomposed in the electron-poor carbon centers,whereas H_(2)O_(2)and dissolved oxygen obtained these electrons in the electron-rich Cu centers through C-O-Cu bonds,thereby producing more active species.This study demonstrates that the electrons of pollutants can be efficiently utilized in Fenton-like reactions by DRCs on the catalyst surface,which provides an effective strategy to improve Fenton-like reactivity and reduce H_(2)O_(2)consumption.

Astrocytes(ASTs)and oligodendroglial lineage cells(OLGs)are major macroglial cells in the central nervous system.ASTs communicate with each other through connexin(Cx)and Cx-based network structures,both of which allow for quick transport of nutrients and signals.Moreover,ASTs interact with OLGs through connexin(Cx)-mediated networks to modulate various physiological processes in the brain.In this article,following a brief description of the infrastructural basis of the glial networks and exocrine factors by which ASTs and OLGs may crosstalk,we focus on recapitulating how the interactions between these two types of glial cells modulate myelination,and how the AST-OLG interactions are involved in protecting the integrity of the blood-brain barrier(BBB)and regulating synaptogenesis and neural activity.Recent studies further suggest that AST-OLG interactions are associated with myelin-related diseases,such as multiple sclerosis.A better understanding of the regulatory mechanisms underlying AST-OLG interactions may inspire the development of novel therapeutic strategies for related brain diseases.

BACKGROUND The SEMA3A gene,which is located at 7q21.11,is involved in hypothalamic neuron migration,heart development,kidney development,and skeleton metabolism.Mutation of the SEMA3A gene is associated with Kallmann syndrome 16 with or without a normal sense of smell.In addition,two case reports showed that mutation of the SEMA3A gene could cause short stature,low gonadotropin,hypogonadism,thoracic deformity,a high scapula,rib and lower limb deformity,facial deformity(long face,epicanthic folds,backwards ears),and arterial malformation.CASE SUMMARY We reported the case of a 26-year-old Chinese man who was admitted because of short stature.Physical examination showed that he had many abnormal symptoms,including a short neck,facial moles,knee valgus,transverse palm,continuous grade 5/6 murmurs in the pulmonary auscultation area,no whiskers,or pubic hair,no Adam’s apple,short penis and cryptorchidism.Radiological examination showed pituitary,gonad,heart,kidney and skeletal dysplasia.The laboratory tests revealed low growth hormone,luteinizing hormone,folliclestimulating hormone,testosterone and estrogen.Clinical whole-exome detection showed that our patient,unlike previously reported patients,has a new SEMA3A gene mutation(c.950A>G).Now,his height has increased by 3 cm.In addition,he has a good appetite and reduced subcutaneous fat over 3 mo of recombinant human growth hormone injections therapy.Unfortunately,he refuses further treatment about gonad.CONCLUSION Patients who come to a hospital because of their short stature must undergo gene detection if they have other simultaneous abnormal phenotypes.

Multi-objective optimal dispatch of household flexible loads based on their real-life operating characteristics and energy-related occupant behavior

A model-based optimal dispatch framework was proposed to optimize operation of residential flexible loads considering their real-life operating characteristics,energy-related occupant behavior,and the benefits of different stakeholders.A pilot test was conducted for a typical household.According to the monitored appliance-level data,operating characteristics of flexible loads were identified and the models of these flexible loads were developed using multiple linear regression and K-means clustering methods.Moreover,a data-mining approach was developed to extract the occupant energy usage behavior of various flexible loads from the monitored data.Occupant behavior of appliance usage,such as daily turn-on times,turn-on moment,duration of each operation,preference of temperature setting,and flexibility window,were determined by the developed data-mining approach.Based on the established flexible load models and the identified occupant energy usage behavior,a many-objective nonlinear optimal dispatch model was developed aiming at minimizing daily electricity costs,occupants’dissatisfaction,CO_(2) emissions,and the average ramping index of household power profiles.The model was solved with the assistance of the NSGA-III and TOPSIS methods.Results indicate that the proposed framework can effectively optimize the operation of household flexible loads.Compared with the benchmark,the daily electricity costs,CO_(2) emissions,and average ramping index of household power profiles of the optimal plan were reduced by 7.3%,6.5%,and 14.4%,respectively,under the TOU tariff,while those were decreased by 9.5%,8.8%,and 23.8%,respectively,under the dynamic price tariff.The outputs of this work can offer guidance for the day-ahead optimal scheduling of household flexible loads in practice.

HTDcr:a job execution framework for high-throughput computing on supercomputers

High-throughput computing(HTC) is a computing paradigm that aims to accomplish jobs by easily breaking them into smaller,independent components.However,it requires a large amount of computing power for a long time.Most existing HTC frameworks are job-oriented without support for coscheduling with hardware architecture and task-level execution.Also,most of the frameworks reach a limited scale,and their usability needs further improvement.Herein,we present HTDcr,a job execution framework for the HTC on supercomputers.This study aims to improve the throughput,task dispatching,and usability of the framework.In detail,the throughput optimizations include a sophisticated designed task management system,a hierarchical scheduler,and the co-optimization of the task-scheduling strategy with the application and hardware characteristics.The optimizations for usability include a programable execution workflow,mechanisms for more robust and reliable service qualities,and a fine-grained resource allocation system for the colocation of multiple jobs.According to our evaluations,HTDcr can achieve outstanding scalability and high throughput on large-scale clusters for the HTC workload.We evaluate HTDcr with several microbenchmarks and real-world applications on Tianhe-2 and Sunway TaihuLight to demonstrate its effects on existing design mechanisms.For instance,the task scheduling for two real-world applications integrated with the application and hardware characteristics achieves 1.7× and 1.9× speedups over the basic task-scheduling strategy.

Numerical Study of Heat Transfer Enhancement in the Electric Vehicle Battery via Vortex‑Induced Agitator

Convective heat transfer plays an important role in the development of a high-performance battery cell.Electric vehicles carry a large amount of the battery cells to reach a longer range of endurance mileage.Thermal diffusion around the battery cells can be considered as obstacles to improve the convective heat transfer coefficient.In this paper,a novel agitator taking advantage of strong vortices is designed to disrupt the thermal boundary layer around the battery cells,thereby improving the fluid mixing for enhanced convective heat transfer.A fluid–structure interaction algorithm is developed to simulate the convective heat transfer rate at various flapping motion.Under the comparison with clean channel,the vortex-induced vibra-tion by the agitated beam can increase the average Nusselt number by 119.59%.This research can be applied to optimize the thermal-structure design inside the electric vehicle battery.

The innate immune pathway is receiving increasing attention in cancer therapy.This pathway is ubiquitous across various cell types,not only in innate immune cells but also in adaptive immune cells,tumor cells,and stromal cells.Agonists targeting the innate immune pathway have shown profound changes in the tumor microenvironment(TME)and improved tumor prognosis in preclinical studies.However,to date,the clinical success of drugs targeting the innate immune pathway remains limited.Interestingly,recent studies have shown that activation of the innate immune pathway can paradoxically promote tumor progression.The uncertainty surrounding the therapeutic effectiveness of targeted drugs for the innate immune pathway is a critical issue that needs immediate investigation.In this review,we observe that the role of the innate immune pathway demonstrates heterogeneity,linked to the tumor development stage,pathway status,and specific cell types.We propose that within the TME,the innate immune pathway exhibits multidimensional diversity.This diversity is fundamentally rooted in cellular heterogeneity and is manifested as a variety of signaling networks.The pro-tumor effect of innate immune pathway activation essentially reflects the suppression of classical pathways and the activation of potential pro-tumor alternative pathways.Refining our understanding of the tumor's innate immune pathway network and employing appropriate targeting strategies can enhance our ability to harness the anti-tumor potential of the innate immune pathway and ultimately bridge the gap from preclinical to clinicalapplication.

Air gap impulse discharge characteristics of railway tunnel‐catenary at high‐altitude are of great significance to the electrical insulation design.The existing altitude correction methods for non‐uniform air gaps are not applicable to tunnel‐catenary.To investigate the impulse discharge characteristics of the tunnel‐catenary,a typical structural model was built in an artificial climate chamber.Different altitudes were simulated by adjusting the atmospheric pressure.The 50%breakdown voltages of the 300–700 mm tunnel‐catenary gap were tested at 243–4000 m.The test found that the altitude/atmospheric pressure and gap length have an evident effect on the 50%impulse breakdown voltage,and the influence of humidity is relatively small.The polarity effect was analysed by streamer theory.The{d,P,h}parameter method was employed to obtain the fitting formulas for the impulse breakdown voltage.A high‐altitude correction method for the tunnel‐catenary breakdown voltage based on 1 km altitude was proposed.Field natural tests were conducted to verify the accuracy of the proposed method.The results show that the breakdown voltage obtained by the correction method has an average error of 3.66%in the results of the field tests,indicating that the method has engineering application prospects.

Wuzi Yanzong prescription(WYP),as a classical prescription for male infertility with kidney essence deficiency,is composed of Gouqizi(Fructus Lycii),Tusizi(Semen Cuscutae),Wuweizi(Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis),Fupenzi(Fructus Rubi Chingii)and Cheqianzi(Semen Plantaginis).It has been used for hundreds of years in the treatment of male infertility,known as“the first prescription of ancient and modern seeds”,with convincing clinical evidence.At present,more than 100 chemical compounds have been isolated from WYP,including polysaccharide,fatty acids,flavonoids,phenylpropanoids,organic acids,alkaloids,terpenoids,etc.Pharmacological and clinical studies show that WYP has an obvious effect on reproductive system diseases,especially male infertility,which has a very wide application prospect.It also has effects on the nervous system,inhibiting liver injury,lowering blood sugar and blood lipid,anti-aging,improving immunity,resisting hypoxia and fatigue effects.This study reviewed the chemical constituents,quality control,pharmacology,and clinical application of WYP.There is no doubt about the clinical value of WYP,but its quality control system is not perfect,pharmacological mechanism is not fully explained,and clinical applications need to be reevaluated.Therefore,the follow-up researches should proceed from the theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM)and clinical applications,further explain the theoretical connotation,reveal the mechanism of action,and provide the basis for the secondary development of classic famous prescriptions.In addition,WYP is mostly used in combination with western medicines besides being used alone.Whether it can improve the efficacy and reduce side effects will also be a meaningful research direction in the future.
