Jet dispersion and deposition of charged particles in confined chambers

Dispersion and surface deposition of charged particles by gas-solids jets in confined chambers are constantly encountered in many industrial applications such as in electrostatic precipitation and dry powder coating processes. Understanding and control of flow patterns and trajectories of charged particles are important to the optimal design and operation of such devices. In this study, modeling of flow fields and particle trajectories of dilute gas-solid two-phase flows with charged particles in confined chambers is performed. The dilute gas-solid two-phase flows are simulated by use of a hybrid Eulerian-Lagrangian approach with the one-way coupling between the gaseous phase and particle phase. The space charge distribution is included as a source term in equations of motion or Lagrangian equation of charged particles, which in turn depends on the particle trajectories that determine the space charge distribution. Our modeling predictions suggested that the electrostatic charge plays a significant role in particle radial dispersion. Effect of voltage has limited influence on particle trajectories however it can have a big impact on the residence time. Cone angle has a significant effect on the structure of flow field. For cone with a larger cone angle （typically over 15°）, there will be a flow separation along the side wall near the flow entrance region. By comparing with the conical chamber, the cylindrical chamber has a big vortex and three smaller vortexes in the lower part of the chamber, which would complicate the particle dispersion with or without the coupling of charging.

Cardiac surgery in patients with liver cirrhosis:Risk factors for predicting mortality

AIM:To evaluate the results of cardiac surgery in cirrhotic patients and to find the predictors of early and late ***:We included 55 consecutive cirrhotic patients undergoing cardiac surgery between 1993 ***-Turcotte-Pugh(Child)classification and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease(MELD)score were used to assess the severity of liver *** online EuroSCORE II calculator was used to calculate the logistic EuroSCORE in each *** logistic regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors for mortality at different times after *** Cox proportional hazard models were applied to estimate the hazard ratios(HR)of predictors for *** Kaplan-Meier method was used to generate survival curves,and the survival rates between groups were compared using the log-rank ***:There were 30 patients in Child class A,20in Child B,and five in Child *** hospital mortality rate was 16.4%.The actuarial survival rates were 70%,64%,56%,and 44%at 1,2,3,and 5 years after surgery,*** were no significant differences in major postoperative complications,and early and late mortality between patients with mild and advanced *** logistic regression showed preoperative serum bilirubin,the EuroSCORE and coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG)were associated with early and late mortality;however,Child class and MELD score were *** regression analysis identified male gender(HR=0.319;P=0.009),preoperative serum bilirubin(HR=1.244;P=0.044),the EuroSCORE(HR=1.415;P=0.001),and CABG(HR=3.344;P=0.01)as independent risk factors for overall ***:Advanced liver cirrhosis should not preclude patients from cardiac *** serum bilirubin,the EuroSCORE,and CABG are major predictors of early and late mortality.

Effective Approach for the Synthesis of Monodisperse Magnetic Nanocrystals and M-Fe3O4 （M = Ag, Au, Pt, Pd） Heterostructures

Monodisperse and size-tunable magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles （NPs） have been synthesized by thermal decomposition of an iron oleate complex at 310 ℃ in the presence of oleylamine and oleic acid. The diameters of the as-synthesized iron oxide NPs decrease with increasing concentrations of iron oleate complex and oleic acid/oleylamine. In addition, the size-dependent crystallinity and magnetic properties of iron oxide NPs are presented. It is found that larger iron oxide NPs have a higher degree of crystallinity and saturation magnetization. More importantly, various M-iron oxide heterostructures （M = Au, Ag, Pt, Pd） have been successfully fabricated by using the same synthesis procedure. The iron oxide NPs are grown over the pre-made metal seeds through a seed-mediated growth process. The physicochemical properties of Au-Fe3O4 heterostructures have been characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, superconducting quantum interference device （SQUID） magnetometry and UV-vis spectroscopy. The as-synthesized Au-Fe3O4 heterostructures show a red-shift in surface plasmon resonance peak compared with Au NPs and similar magnetic properties to Fe3O4 NPs. The heterojunction effects present in such nanostructures offer the opportunity to tune the irphysicochemical properties. Therefore, this synthesis process can be regarded as an efficient way to fabricate a series of heterostructures for a variety of applications.

Splenic tumors are rare. Differentiation of the tumors before operation is of great value regarding the outcome. A case of a 32-year-old man with a splenic inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) mimicking splenic angiosarcoma is described. The tumor was highly suspected of being splenic angiosarcoma based on radiological findings preoperatively. However, after splenectomy, histopathological examinations revealed splenic IPT. Splenic IPT and angiosarcoma are rare and often pose diagnostic difficulties because the clinical and radiological fi ndings are obscure. Due to large differences in prognosis, we briefl y reviewed the clinical, radiological, and pathological features of both of the tumors.

Two-dimensional MX Dirac materials and quantum spin Hall insulators with tunable electronic and topological properties

We propose a novel class of two-dimensional(2D)Dirac materials in the MX family(M=Be,Mg,Zn and Cd,X=Cl,Br and I),which exhibit graphene-like band structures with linearly-dispersing Dirac-cone states over large energy scales(0.8–1.8 eV)and ultra-high Fermi velocities comparable to ***-orbit coupling opens sizable topological band gaps so that these compounds can be effectively classified as quantum spin Hall *** electronic and topological properties are found to be highly tunable and amenable to modulation via anion-layer substitution and vertical electric *** structures of several members of the family are shown to host a Van-Hove singularity(VHS)close to the energy of the Dirac *** enhanced density-of-states associated with these VHSs could provide a mechanism for inducing topological *** presence of sizable band gaps,ultra-high carrier mobilities,and small effective masses makes the MX family promising for electronics and spintronics applications.

Investigation of pressure drop in flexible ventilation ducts under different compression ratios and bending angles

Due to the large degree of freedom in terms of design and installation, flexible ventilation ducts are commonly used in ventilation systems. However, excessive use of flexible ducts may lead to greater pressure drop and higher energy consumption. This study conducted experimental measurements to characterize the pressure drop in flexible ventilation ducts with different compression ratios and bending angles. This investigation first measured the pressure drop in straight flexible ducts with four compression ratios under various airflow rates. The calculated friction factor for the straight flexible ducts was negatively associated with the compression ratio. Next, the pressure drops in single-bend flexible ducts with various bending angles from 30° to 150° were measured under various airflow rates. The calculated loss coefficient of the bend increased with the bending angle for single-bend flexible ducts. Finally, the influence of the intermediate duct length on the pressure drop across two bends was experimentally investigated. When the length of the intermediate duct was greater than eight times the inner diameter, the pressure drop across a double-bend flexible duct could be calculated from the friction factors and loss coefficients with a relative error less than 1%. The data obtained in this study can be used to calculate the total pressure loss in flexible ventilation ducting systems in buildings.

The search for novel materials with new functionalities and applications potential is continuing to *** anomalous Hall(QAH)effect was recently realized in magnetic topological insulators(TIs)but only at extremely low ***,based on our first-principles electronic structure calculations,we predict that chemically functionalized Ⅲ-Bi honeycombs can support large-gap QAH insulating ***,we show that functionalized AlBi and TlBi films harbor QAH insulator *** and InBi are identified as semimetals with non-zero Chern ***,TlBi exhibits a robust QAH phase with a band gap as large as 466 meV in a buckled honeycomb structure functionalized on one ***,the electronic spectrum of a functionalized TlBi nanoribbon with zigzag edge is shown to possess only one chiral edge band crossing the Fermi level within the band *** results suggest that Ⅲ-Bi honeycombs would provide a new platform for developing potential spintronics applications based on the QAH effect.
