A tree detection method based on trunk point cloud section in dense plantation forest using drone Li DAR data

Single-tree detection is one of the main research topics in quantifying the structural properties of forests. Drone Li DAR systems and terrestrial laser scanning systems produce high-density point clouds that offer great promise for forest inventories in limited areas. However, most studies have focused on the upper canopy layer and neglected the lower forest structure. This paper describes an innovative tree detection method using drone Li DAR data from a new perspective of the under-canopy structure. This method relies on trunk point clouds, with undercanopy sections split into heights ranging from 1 to 7 m, which were processed and compared, to determine a suitable height threshold to detect trees. The method was tested in a dense cedar plantation forest in the Aichi Prefecture, Japan, which has a stem density of 1140 stems·ha^(-1) and an average tree age of 42 years. Dense point cloud data were generated from the drone Li DAR system and terrestrial laser scanning with an average point density of 5000 and 6500 points·m^(-2), respectively. Tree detection was achieved by drawing point-cloud section projections of tree trunks at different heights and calculating the center coordinates. The results show that this trunk-section-based method significantly reduces the difficulty of tree detection in dense plantation forests with high accuracy(F1-Score=0.9395). This method can be extended to different forest scenarios or conditions by changing section parameters.

Clinical utility of hepatitis B surface antigen kinetics in treatment-na?ve chronic hepatitis B patients during longterm entecavir therapy

AIM To investigate the utility of hepatitis B surface antigen(HBsAg) kinetics in chronic hepatitis B patients during long-term entecavir *** This retrospective study included treatment-na?ve chronic hepatitis B patients who received at least 2 years of consecutive entecavir treatment. Patients were followed up at three to six month intervals with liver biochemistry, hepatitis B virus DNA, and abdominal sonography. In hepatitis B e antigen(HBeAg)-positive patients, HBeAg levels were assessed every three to six month until results became negative. Serum HBsAg levels were determined at the baseline, oneyear and five-year time points. Liver cirrhosis was diagnosed through liver biopsy, imaging examinations, or clinical findings of portal hypertension. Hepatocellular carcinoma was diagnosed by histological examination or dynamic image *** A total of 211 patients were enrolled. The median treatment time was 5.24(2.00-9.62) years. Multivariate analysis showed that lower baseline HBsAg levels were associated with an earlier virological response, earlier hepatitis B e antigen(HBeAg) seroconversion, and earlier biochemical response in HBeAg-positive patients(cut-off value: 4 log IU/mL) and an earlier virological response in HBeAg-negative non-cirrhotic patients(cut-off value: 2.4 log IU/mL). Although HBsAg levels decreased slowly during long-term entecavir treatment, higher HBsAg decrease rates were found in the first year for HBeAg-positive non-cirrhotic patients, and patients with higher baseline HBsAg levels. More favorable clinical outcomes were not observed by a rapid HBsAg decline per se, but depended on lower baseline HBsAg *** Baseline HBsAg can be used to predict treatment responses. HBsAg levels and decrease rates should be considered together according to disease status while interpreting HBsAg changes.

In situ development of highly concave and compositionconfined PtNi octahedra with high oxygen reduction reaction activity and durability

Controlled syntheses of PtNi metal nanocrystals with unique structures for catalyzing oxygen reduction reactions （ORRs） have attracted great interest. Here, we report the one-step synthesis of single-crystal PtNi octahedra with in situ-developed highly concave features and self-confined composition that are optimal for ORR. Detailed studies revealed that the Pt-rich seeding, subsequent Pt/Ni co-reduction, and Pt-Ni interfusion resulted in uniform single-crystal PtNi octahedra, and that the combination of Ni facet segregation and oxygen etching of a Ni-rich surface led to the concavity and confined Ni content. The concave PtNi nanocrystals exhibited much higher ORR performance than the commercially available Pt/C catalyst in terms of both specific activity （29.1 times higher） and mass activity （12.9 times higher） at 0.9 V （vs. reversible hydrogen electrode （RHE））. The performance was also higher than that of PtNi octahedra without concavity, confirming that the higher activity was closely related to its morphology. Moreover, the concave octahedra also exhibited remarkable stability in ORR （93% mass activity remained after 10,000 cycles between 0.6 and 1.1 V vs. RHE） owing to the passivation of the unstable sites.

Learning of medical pharmacology via innovation:a personal experience at McMaster and in Asia

Pharmacology in the traditional medical curriculum has been treated as a discrete "preclinical" discipline identifying itself distinctly different from the other preclinical sciences or clinical subjects in knowledge base as well as learning/teaching instructions. It is usually run in series with other pre-clinical courses (eg, anatomy, biochemistry, physiology etc), but in parallel with other paraclinical courses such as pathology, microbiology and community medicine. Clinical pharmacology was only introduced relatively recently designed to overcome the perceived deficiency in "preclinical" pharmacology regarding its therapeutic relevance and application to medicine. In many universities, both preclinical and clinical pharmacology courses co-exist, usually independently offered by two separate, sometimes non-interacting Departments of Pharmacology and Clinical Pharmacology. BACKGROUND Rectal melanoma is an uncommon neoplasm that accounts for approximately 1 percent of rectal cancer *** resection was regarded as the radical procedure for disease ***,it led to more postoperative complications than sphincter-sparing wide local excision(WLE)and reduced the patient’s quality of life(QOL)owing to creation of ***,in this study,WLE,radiotherapy(RT),and a second WLE were conducted on a patient who had been diagnosed with localized rectal *** SUMMARY The patient was a 79-year-old woman who had been experiencing anal pain and bloody stool for 1 ***,magnetic resonance imaging,positron emission tomography–computed tomography,and histological analysis of tissue biopsy using the histological markers Melan-A(+),S-100(+),and Ki-67(+,50%)lead to the diagnosis of localized rectal *** patient had initially undergone WLE to resolve problem of anal bleeding,followed by RT to treat the residual lesion with partial ***,the residual lesion was removed with margin-free resection by the second *** patient’s postoperative course was smooth and *** the 2-year follow-up,no local recurrence was ***,a good functional outcome and improved QOL were *** Combining WLE,RT,and repeat WLE is proposed as a viable alternative for treating rectal melanoma accompanied by bleeding symptoms that cannot be completely resected at the beginning.

Huntington’s disease (HD)(OMIM 143100) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder caused by a monogenic mutation in the huntingtin gene (HTT),which induces typical midlife onset and age-dependent progression with major symptoms including choreic movements,psychiatric disorders,and cognitive impairment(Gusella et al.,2021).After the 1993 discovery of a pathogenic expansion of the CAG trinucleotide repeat beyond 35 in HTT exon 1 as a causative factor for HD,many animal,mammalian cell and yeast models expressing mutant HTT (mHtt) with abnormal CAG repeats have been created to study CAG repeat-induced toxicity (Naphade et al.,2019;Gusella et al.,2021).
