The East Asian monsoon probably existed as early as at the palaeogene/Neogene ***,its evolutionary process is still less well known owing mainly to the lack of long,continuous palaeoenvironmental *** recently reported Miocene(2.-6.2.Ma) and late Miocene-pliocene(7.1-3.5 Ma) loess-palaeosol sequences from the western {2. Loess plateau(CLp) provide new insights into the evolution of the monsoon ***,reports on the bioclimatic indicators from these deposits and the subsequent reconstruction of the palaeomonsoon are *** we present a pliocene terrestrial mollusk record from the western CLp and discuss the possible impact of isolation gradients on the East Asian summer monsoon. our results show that most peak values of the dominant thermo-humidiphilous mollusk taxa,Metodontia and punctum,a proxy of the East Asian summer monsoon,approximately correspond to maxima of mean summer insolation gradient between middle and low latitudes as well as some maximum values of the 35°N insolation,suggesting a possible causal link between the summer monsoon and the insolation parameters. The major frequencies from spectrum analysis of the sum of the two warmth- and moisture-loving taxa through the loess-palaeosol succession match those obtained from the mean summer insolation-gradient variations between middle and low latitudes over this geological period,providing further evidence for such a causal *** summer insolation gradient between middle and low latitudes could influence atmospheric circulation(in the present condition the East Asian summer monsoon).Any elevated mean summer insolation gradients between middle and low latitudes would have intensified the East Asian summer monsoon and the flux of moisture and heat over the oceans to the interior region including the CLp, creating favorable conditions for the expansion of the mollusk *** such,the mollusk record from the loess-palaeosol deposits in the western CLp provides ev

Eco-environmental changes during interglacials with an astronomical background similar to that of the Holocene are potentially helpful for understanding the future climatic *** oxygen isotope stage(MIS)19 is similar to the Holocene in astronomical background,both being characterized by a low eccentricity of the Earth’s ***,MIS 19 has attracted research attention only recently and therefore less is known about eco-environmental changes during this interval,especially based on terrestrial *** the chinese Loess plateau(CLp),the S7 paleosol can provide va{2.able terrestrial paleoclimatic and paleoenvironmental record for MIS ***,high-reso{2.tion terrestrial snail records from the L8–L7 strata of the Huining,Xifeng and {2.ochuan sequences in the CLp were analyzed in order to characterize spatio-temporal changes in climate and eco-environment during MIS 2.–*** results show that in all three sections the late part of MIS 2. was dominated by abundant cold-aridiphilous mol{2.sc species,indicating that cold and dry climatic conditions prevailed across the entire CLp,under the strong inf{2.ence of the winter *** mol{2.sc fauna of MIS 19 were dominated by warmth-loving and thermohumidiphilous species that enable the definition of two climatic *** early part of MIS 19(~790–778 ka)was marked by warm and humid conditions,as evidenced by high abundances of warmth-loving and thermo-humidiphilous *** interval was slightly warmer than today and it lasted for^12.*** climate of the later part of MIS 19(~778–761 ka)was more moderate,and increased proportions of cold-aridiphilous and warmth-loving species were *** warmth of this period was similar to that of today,but the climatic f{2.ctuations were *** the early part of MIS 18(~761–745 ka),the Xifeng and {2.ochuan sections in the eastern CLp still maintained high abundances of warmth-loving and thermo-humidiphilous species,indicating that the moderate climatic

The history of rice(oryza sativa) cultivation in North china is ambiguous owing to a lack of evidence from rice remains with precise ages in archaeological *** this paper,we present rice phytolith evidence from six archaeological sites in the Guanzhong Basin,central North china,dating from c.5500 to 2.00 cal.a Bp(calibrated/ calendar ages) based on 19 *** phytoliths found in the three archaeological sites located on the second river terrace(Quanhu,Yangguanzhai and Anban) include three types of phytoliths from rice,namely bulliform, parallel-bilobe and *** findings suggest that the earliest cultivated rice in central North china occurred not later than c.5690 cal.a *** c.5500 cal.a Bp,the farming pattern in the Guanzhong Basin was characterized by dominant dry crops(***) and locally cultivated rice.A likely spread route of rice from the lower reaches of the Huanghe(Yellow) River towards the Guanzhong Basin in central North china is speculated to have happened at c.5690 cal.a *** findings of this study help us to understand the farming pattern in the area and how rice spread across the semi-arid regions of East Asia.

Foxtail millet {Setaria italica) is one of the oldest domesticated cereal crops in Eurasia,but identifying foxtail millets, especially in charred grains,and differentiating it from its wild ancestor,green foxtail {Setaria viridis),in the archaeobotanical remains,is still *** analysis provides a meaningful method for identifying this important *** this paper,the silicon structure patterns in the g{2.mes,lemmas,and paleas from inflorescence bracts in 16 modern plants of foxtail millet and green foxtail from china and Europe are examined using light microscopy with phase-contrast and a microscopic *** research shows that the silicon structure of QUI from upper lemmas and paleas in foxtail millet and green foxtail can be correspondingly divided into two *** size ofΩⅢtype phytolith of foxtail millet is bigger than that from green *** function analysis reveals that 78.4%of data on foxtail millet and 76.9%of data on green foxtail are correctly *** means certain morphotypes of phytoliths are relatively reliable tools for distinguishing foxtail millet from green *** results also revealed that the husk phytolith morphologies of foxtail millets from china and Eastern Europe are markedly different from those from Western *** research gives a meaningful method of separating foxtail millet and green *** implications of these findings for understanding the history of foxtail millet domestication and cultivation in ancient civilizations are significant.

A high-resolution pollen record derived from DG9603 core reveals vegetation and climate changes on the East {2. Sea Shelf(ECSS) during the past 30 000 *** 2..8 to 2..6 cal ka Bp,the ECSS was covered by warm temperate forest-steppe and wetland,indicating a relatively temperate and moist *** the period of 2..6—14.8 cal ka Bp(including the Last Glacial Maximum),wetland and temperate forest-steppe developed around the *** 14.8 to 5.3 cal ka Bp,sea-level continuously rose,and the ECSS was gradually *** some exposed areas of the ECSS and lower reaches of the Yangtze River,northern subtropical forest(with plants of Quercus-evergreen,Castanopsis—lithocarpus and Tsuga) developed instead of temperate forest-steppe and *** pollen record shows that the rainfall and temperature increased continually during the period of 14.8—12.8 cal ka *** the end of this period,subtropical forest expanded and even reached the level of"Holocene optimum period"(early-mid Holocene).IN the Younger Dryas period (12.8—11.1 cal ka Bp),a rapid increase in the proportion of arboreal taxa especially Quercus-deciduous tree, and a slight decrease in Quercus-evergreen,Tsuga and herbs component indicates a mild climate with higher *** 11.1 to 5.3 cal ka Bp,the northern subtropical forest was widely distributed around the ECSS region,suggesting a relative warm and humid condition in the early *** subtropical forest component declined slightly and herbaceous taxa increased,reflecting a relatively drier and cooler climate during the period of 9.0—7.0 cal ka *** the past 5.3 cal ka Bp,forest vegetation in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River was deforested severely,possibly caused by human activity.

A new molluscan fossil record from the late Miocene-pliocene Xifeng Red Clay sequence in the central Loess plateau,northern {2.,reveals the process of ecological environmental changes during～6.2.2.4 *** marked ecological shifts in mollusk assemblages occurred at about 5.4,4.5,and 3.4 Ma,which reflect changes in the East Asian monsoon circulation.A predominantly cold-aridiphilous group reveals an extremely cold dry climate due to strengthened East Asian winter monsoon during～6.2.5.4 Ma.A predominantly thermo-humidiphilous group from～5.4-4.5 Ma indicates a strengthening of the East Asia summer monsoon *** marked occurrence of meso-xerophilous taxa during～4.5-3.4 Ma implies mild climatic *** 3.4 Ma,the cold-aridiphilious species again became dominant in the fossil assemblages,indicating that the winter monsoon was gradually intensifying towards the Quaternary *** changes in this region were characterized by stepwise cooling from 5.4 to 2.4 Ma with a 1 Ma *** cooling trend is in good agreement with the general global cooling trend during this period,as documented by marine y18o *** formation and development of the Northern Hemisphere ice sheets during the late pliocene accelerated the climate deterioration towards the Quaternary *** history of environmental changes revealed by the Red Clay molluscan fossils is coupled in phase with the process of Tibetan plateau uplift,which may be the major cause and forcing mechanism of late Miocene-pliocene environmental changes in the Loess plateau.

This study investigates the distribution of modern pollen assemblages in the Qjnghai-Tibetan plateau, china,based on surface soil samples collected at 12.2.sites along an altitudinal gradient of 10 -5500 m asl,where mean annual precipitation(MAp) ranges from 12.to 1840 mm and mean annual temperature(MAT) from -1 to 2..5℃.A total of 153 pollen taxa were found with relative abundances greater than 1%in at least two *** correspondence analysis(CCA) was used to determine the main environmental variables influencing pollen *** results reveal that MAp is the most significant dominant ***,MAT,altitude(ALT),July temperature(MT7),and relative humidity(HHH) are also significant variables that clearly follow the gradients in the CCA ordination, suggesting that pollen assemblages probably not only reflect a single c{2.matic parameter,but also a variety of other c{2.matic inter-related parameters. Transfer functions,based on locally weighted weighted averaging(LWWA),were developed for MAp (R-boot = 0.89,RMSEp = 109 mm),MAT(R-boot = *** = 2.3℃),ALT(R-boot = 0.73, RMSEp = 597 m),HHH(R-boot = 0.82.RMSEp = 4.5%),and July mean precipitation(Mp7)(R- boot = 0.87,RMSEp = 2. ram).overall,our results confirm that pollen can provide re{2.able estimates of the primary c{2.matic *** app{2.cation of the LWWA model to the fossil records of Chen Co Lake allowed quantitative inferences to be made about Holocene c{2.matic changes in the southern Tibetan plateau,suggesting that LWWA is a robust ca{2.bration method for quantitative palaeo-environ-mental reconstruction based on pollen data in the regions.

Mollusk remains are abundant in archaeological sites in the Guanzhong Basin of Northwestern china,providing good opportunities for investigations into the use of mollusks by prehistoric *** we report on freshwater gastropod and bivalve mollusks covering the time interval from about 5600 to 4500 *** Bp from sites of Mid-Late Neolithic age. They are identified as Cipangopaludina chinensis and Unio douglasiae,both of which are currently food for *** shells are well preserved and have no signs of *** are all freshwater gastropods and bivalves found in pits without water-reworked deposits and have modern representatives which can be observed in rivers,reservoirs,and paddy fields in the studied *** shells were frequently recovered in association with mammal bones,lithic artifacts,and *** lines of evidence indicate that the mollusks are the remains of prehistoric *** mollusk shells were likely discarded into the pits by prehistoric humans after the flesh was ***,these mollusk remains may not have been staple food since they are not found in large *** shell tools and ornaments are also *** tools include shell knives,shell reaphooks and arrowheads,whereas shell ornaments are composed of pendants and loops. All the shell tools and ornaments are made of bivalve mollusks and do not occur in large *** finding of these freshwater mollusk remains supports the view that the middle Holocene climate in the Guanzhong Basin may have been warm and moist,which was probably favorable to freshwater mollusks growing and developing in the region.
