Impact of Plastic Packaging Materials and Storage Time on the Quality Parameters of Lebanese Extra Virgin Olive Oil under Real-Time Storage Conditions

Scarce information is currently available relative to the use of polymeric materials as storage containers for extra virgin olive oil. This paper was devoted to study and compare the impact of glass and 3 types of packaging materials—polyethylene terephthalate (PET), high density polyethylene (HDPE), and polylactic acid (PLA) on Lebanese extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) up to 9 months under non-accelerated storage conditions. The acidity, peroxide value (PV), K232, K270, fatty acid profile, overall migration, and oil sorption into the packaging material were determined. Conventional titration, gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, and spectrophotometry were used to quantify the outcome measures at baseline, 3, 5, 7, and 9 months. Mixed model ANOVA was applied to assess differences according to polymer type and storage period at P 232 and K270), migration, and sorption significantly increased with increasing storage time for oil in contact with glass and plastic materials, especially between the 7th and 9th month of storage. Overall, PLA showed the least deterioration and interaction phenomena compared with PET and HDPE. While glass remains the best container for EVOO, PLA could potentially replace PET and HDPE for short-time storage under conventional storage conditions in Lebanese households.

Study of the Dispersive Component of the Surface Energy of Polylactides by Inverse Gas Chromatography at Infinite Dilution

Inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution is a powerful technique that can be advantageously used to characterize the surface physicochemical properties of solid substrates as oxides and polymers in both forms of powder or fibres. In the case of polymer, this technique can be used to determine the second order transition phenomena temperatures. This paper was devoted to the determination of the glass transition temperature of polylactide polymer. The dispersive component of the surface energy ?of polylactides was determined by inverse gas chromatography at infinite dilution. Various theoretical models were used to deduce the dispersive component of the surface energy of the solid substrates. These models are based on the calculation of the molecular areas of adsorbed molecules on the polymer surface: geometrical model, cylindrical molecular model, liquid density model, BET method, Kiselev results and the two-dimensional Van der Waals and Redlich-Kwong equations. The curves relative to the variation of as a function of the temperature showed a specific graph with a maximum value of ?at a certain particular temperature characteristic to the investigated polylactide polymer. In fact, the maxima of ?indicated the presence of glass transition temperature Tg of polylactide whatever the molecular model used. This study showed a glass transition temperature equal to 64°C confirming that obtained by other studies.

＜正＞ The comparative efficiency of selected multi-component photoinitiating systems （PIS） based on Cl-HABl （2- Chlorohexaarylbiimidazole） in the presence of coumarins or ketocoumarines or ketones or/and hydrogen donors is investigated through Real Time FT-IR. The results of the polymerization kinetics and complementary data on the processes obtained through steady state analytical techniques allows the elaboration of a general picture for the mechanisms encountered in the different PIS and a discussion on their relative efficiency.

Impact of Dietary Lactobacillus plantarum Postbiotics on the Performance of Layer Hens under Heat Stress Conditions

This experiment was conducted to determine the performance of heat-stressed layers fed a diet containing the probiotic Lactobacillus plantarum RS5 or its products of fermentation (postbiotics). Twenty-week-old Isa White layers, were subdivided into six treatments of 32 individually caged birds. Half of the birds were reared under regular temperature conditions, while the other half was subjected to cyclic daily heat stress. Layers were offered one of three diets: 1) Control;2) Control + Lactobacillus plantarum RS5 probiotic;3) Control + Lactobacillus plantarum RS5 postbiotics. Birds were tested for performance and visceral organ development for 5 months. Heat stress negatively affected the birds’ feed intake, egg weight, shell weight percentage, Haugh unit, shell thickness, yolk color, body weight and spleen weight percentage. Postbiotics significantly increased egg production (p < 0.05) in comparison to the control and the probiotic fed group (94.8% vs 92.6% vs 93.1%, respectively). Birds under probiotic or postbiotic diet showed a significantly higher (p < 0.05) feed intake and egg weight, although the probiotic had a more pronounced and gradual effect. Specific gravity, yolk weight percentage and shell thickness didn’t show differences among dietary groups. The Haugh Unit was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in probiotic group which also showed a significantly lower yolk color index (p < 0.05). The different feed treatments did not impact the bird’s viscera weight percentage, except for the ileum that was significantly lower (p < 0.05) under postbiotic supplementation. Both probiotics and postbiotics could be used as a potential growth promoters and might alleviate heat stress impact in poultry industry.

Development and Validation of an Indirect Whole-Virus ELISA Using a Predominant Genotype VI Velogenic NewCastle Disease Virus Isolated from Lebanese Poultry

Commercial ELISA kits are commonly used to assess the levels of chicken antibodies against NewCastle Disease Virus (NDV) and trace a field strain infection. Nevertheless, the specificity of these kits vis-à-vis endemic strains in Lebanon remains in question. This study developed an in-house indirect ELISA system to evaluate the level of chicken antibodies against a predominant velogenic NDV strain belonging to Genotype VI. A checkerboard analysis comprised a five-factorial multivariate experiment to optimize the protocol: coating antigen concentration, blocking buffer utilization, serum and conjugate dilution levels, and OD reading wavelength. The developed test was optimized and then validated through parallel testing of the sera of 20 broilers and 5 layers using standard serological assays. There was a strong correlation between the developed ELISA results and those obtained with the Hemagglutination Inhibition test (P < 0.01), and a commercial NDV ELISA kit (P < 0.05). The specificity, sensitivity, and reproducibility of the developed ELISA suggest that it can be used as the test of choice for the assessment of chicken antibody titers against locally circulating velogenic NDV strains, specifically those belonging to Genotype VI. It also offers better help in the serological detection of birds’ exposure to the said strains.

BACKGROUND Superior mesenteric venous thrombosis(SMVT)is a rare but fatal condition that is typically treated initially with anticoagulation therapy,and if this fails,with endovascular ***,due to its rarity,there are not many studies that have explored the effectiveness of anticoagulation and endovascular therapies in treating *** To evaluate patients diagnosed with SMVT who received endovascular therapy in addition to anticoagulation and report technical and clinical *** A retrospective analysis of the patients who underwent endovascular treatment for SMVT at Mayo Clinic from 2000-2019 was *** success was defined as angiographic improvement in SMV flow after *** patency was defined as the interval from reestablishing mesenteric venous flow until the first repeat thrombotic event or need for additional *** patency was defined as successful restoration of flow after repeat intervention until rethrombosis or last *** adverse events were reported through Clavien-Dindo *** Twenty-four patients were included for *** median age at intervention was 60 years(35-74 years)and 16(67%)were *** patients presented with acute thrombosis(79.2%)and 5 with chronic thrombosis with acute manifestations(20.8%).The most commonly used endovascular modalities were thrombectomy in 12 patients(50.0%)and catheter-directed thrombolysis in 10 patients(41.7%).Technical success was achieved in 18 patients(75%).The 14-d and 30-d primary patency rates were 88.9%and 83.3%,*** events were reported in two patients(8.3%),one marked as grade IIIB,and 1 death marked as grade ***-year overall survival rate was 82%(58%-100%).CONCLUSION Endovascular intervention with anticoagulation appears to be effective for managing *** treatment combination may be considered as first-line therapy for SMVT management in select patients.

Basics on the use of acid-sensing ion channels' inhibitors as therapeutics

Since the discovery of acid-sensing ion channels in 1997, their importance in the health of neurons and other non-neuronal cells has gained significant importance. Acid-sensing ion channels play important roles in mediating pain sensation during diseases such as stroke, inflammation, arthritis, cancer, and recently migraine. More interestingly, acid-sensing ion channels may explain the sex differences in pain between males and females. Also, the ability of acid-sensing ion channel blockers to exert neuroprotective effects in a number of neurodegenerative diseases has added a new dimension to their therapeutic value. The current failure rate of ～45% of new drugs(due to toxicity issues) and saving of up to 7 years in the life span of drug approval makes drug repurposing a high priority. If acid-sensing ion channels' blockers undergo what is known as "drug repurposing", there is a great potential to bring them as medications with known safety profiles to new patient populations. However, the route of administration remains a big challenge due to their poor penetration of the blood brain and retinal barriers. In this review, the promise of using acid-sensing ion channel blockers as neuroprotective drugs is discussed.

We give an existence result of entropy and renormalized solutions for strongly nonlinear elliptic equations in the framework of Sobolev spaces with variable exponents of the type： -div （a（x, u,▽u）＋φ（u））＋g（x, u,▽u）=μ, where the right-hand side belongs to L^1（Ω）＋W^-1,p＇（x）（Ω）, -div（a（x, u,▽u）） is a Leray-Lions operator defined from W^-1,p＇（x）（Ω） into its dual and φ∈C^0（R,R^N）. The function g（x, u,▽u） is a non linear lower order term with natural growth with respect to ｜▽u｜ satisfying the sign condition, that is, g（x, u,▽u）u ≥ 0.

New Concept of Physics Energy Behaviour and Its Application in Cosmology to Define Gravity Value from Einstein’s Relativity

The goal is to define Quantum Gravity Value by combination between our new concept about physics energy behaviour [1] and Einstein relativity’s Theory [2]. Our theory is based on the existence of a relationship between energy and vacuum! So it can be considered that the energy is a function of the vacuum ratio (v). Therefore, we can say that vacuum ratio constitutes a part of space-time. With simple mathematical formula, we can easily obtain the equation of the Energy Vacuum. This gives us the distribution of the energy Vacuum (E) into two parts are inversely proportional from our vacuum energy diagram, the effective energy that the sole responsible for Curvature of space-time fabric, and the lost energy that the responsible of the Gravitational waves [3]. From these equations, we can find that the relationship with Energy and Vacuum ratio is linear which are compatible with Quantum Mechanics laws and Maintains the energy conservation principle. It is also observed that the equations obtained through our theory are Combining relativity and Quantum Mechanics into one continuum. If we take the equations of our theory, we can easily obtain from Curvature of Space-Time Fabric, the Gravity value equation which equals to the square root of energy multiply times the square of the vacuum ratio. On other hand, a curvature matrix and a Time Dilation’s Circle are proposed, which gives us a new method to facilitate the calculations of the parameters involved in the Space-Time Curvature.
