Minimizing the risk of community spread of COVID-19 via institutional quarantine of high-risk travelers with serial viral RNA testing: A successful experience from Macao SAR, China

Macao,a special administrative region(SAR)of the People’s Republic of China,is located in southern China and shares the border with China's Mainland.It is the most densely populated region in the world,with a population of 667400 and a total land area of 32.9 square kilometers in 2019.Since the first case diagnosed on January 22,2020,there was a total of 45 laboratory-confirmed coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)cases in Macao,of which 43 patients(96%)were imported cases.To date,all patients had been discharged successfully from Centro Hospitalar Conde de São Januário,a designated hospital to manage all COVID-19 patients in Macao.Eventually,no patient died,and no local community outbreak was noted.This opinion review describes the underlying factors that could have contributed to the successful experience in Macao SAR,China,which include the following:(1)Early implementation of containment measures;(2)Large-scale quarantine using hotel rooms to reduce the risk of a local outbreak;and(3)Multidisciplinary co-operation and transparency of information to the public.Although the successful experience in Macao SAR,China,may not be generalized to other regions,it should not be unreasonable to be well prepared with sufficient logistic support to conduct timely containment and early detection of episodic cases to prevent the backsliding of COVID-19 outbreak.

Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals(EDCs)are a group of molecules that can influence hormonal balance,causing disturbance of the reproductive system and other health problems.Despite the efforts to eliminate EDC in the environment,all current approaches are inefficient and expensive.In previous research,studies revealed that laccase-producing microorganisms may be a potential candidate for EDC degradation,as laccases have been found to be able to degrade many kinds of EDCs effectively and steadily.Here,we created two recombinant laccases,each fused with secretion peptide,Novel Signal Peptide 4(NSP4),and expressed them in Escherichia coli(E.coli,BL21),together with one laccase without secretion peptide.We first optimized the culture condition of expressing these laccases.Then,we test the activity of the recombinant laccases of decolorizing of a synthetic dye,indigo carmine.Finally,we confirmed the secreted can degrade one of the EDCs,β-estradiol,showing the potential of using the laccase secretion system to degrade toxic compounds.

Effect of Rorrico, extracted from group of Chinese medicines, on influenza A and H1N1 infections

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the therapeutic and preventive effects of Rorrico on influenza, especially influenza A viral infection, including swine flu(H1N1)in humans.METHODS: Eighty-nine subjects were recruited in hong Kong and Macao, and divided into treatment group(TG) and prevention group(PG) based on their influenza A and swine flu symptoms. All subjects were prescribed Rorrico or placebo, and monitored by a Chinese medicine practitioner. Blood samples were collected before and after 7-day Rorrico or placebo treatment for laboratory investigations.RESULTS: After treatment, there were some full recoveries and obvious relief of onset symptoms in the TG. Blood test results showed that Rorrico produced(a) no adverse effects on subjects' renal andliver functions, muscle enzyme and hematological status,(b) no up-regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines tumour necrosis factor-a and interleukin-18 in both TG and PG,(c) mild yet statistically significant elevation of plasma mannose-binding lectin(MBL) in PG.CONCLUSION: Rorrico has no up-regulating effect on the participants' immune response, or, equally likely, the immuno-modulatory effects of Rorrico do not non-specifically or unnecessarily promote inflammation when not required. It is possible that oral administration of Rorrico can promote hepatic synthesis of MBL in healthy PG subjects, thereby conferring increased protection against infection.

Genomic dissection of widely planted soybean cultivars leads to a new breeding strategy of crops in the post-genomic era

Soybeans specially the widely planted cultivars have been dramatically improved in agronomic performance and is well adapted to local planting environments after long-time domestication and breeding.Uncovering the unique genomic features of popular cultivars will help to understand how soybean genomes have been modified through breeding.We re-sequenced 134 soybean cultivars that were released and most widely planted over the last century in China.Phylogenetic analyses established that these cultivars comprise two geographically distinct sub-populations:Northeast China (NE) versus the HuangHuai-Hai River Valley and South China (HS).A total of 309 selective regions were identified as being impacted by geographical origins.The HS sub-population exhibited higher genetic diversity and linkage disequilibrium decayed more rapidly compared to the NE sub-population.To study the association between phenotypic differences and geographical origins,we recorded the vegetative period under different growing conditions for two years,and found that clustering based on the phenotypic data was closely correlated with cultivar geographical origin.By iteratively calculating accumulated genetic diversity,we established a platform panel of cultivars and have proposed a novel breeding strategy named "Potalaization"for selecting and utilizing the platform cultivars that represent the most genetically diversity and the highest available agronomic performance as the "plateau"for accumulating elite loci and traits,breeding novel widely adapted cultivars,and upgrading breeding technology.In addition to providing new genomic information for the soybean research community,the "Potalaization"strategy that we devised will also be practical for integrating the conventional and molecular breeding programs of crops in the post-genomic era.

发展权转移(TDR)被认为是不需要动用公共资金就可以保护历史建筑和其他资源,同时又尊重私人产权的“双赢”市场机制,在国际上得到广泛应用。然而一些城市或地区中的TDR相关制度不完备,缺乏有效的支持政策,使得TDR在解决了历史建筑保护问题的同时又产生了一系列新问题。本文首先介绍香港与TDR相关的当地制度体系,然后以香港圣公会建筑群和卡里克大宅两个引起较大争议的TDR项目为案例,通过调查和访谈,从管理、社区和项目维度系统解析TDR在香港的运作中存在的问题——其难以在尊重私有产权、合理利用公共资源与保护历史建筑三者之间取得平衡,各部门之间缺乏沟通和协调,尚未建立明确和公平的市场机制等制度困境。最后文章从制度安排的三个层面即法制法规、管理和操作层面提出制度优化策略,以期为高密度城市利用TDR机制保护历史建筑提供参考。

Transurethral resection of prostate for acute urinary retention is linked to shorter survival in younger men

It is largely unknown whether lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS)or acute retention of urine(AROU)is linked to shorter life expectancy in men.We conducted a multicenter,retrospective database analysis of patients undergoing transurethral resection of prostate(TURP)to study their relationships.Multivariate Cox regression analysis and Kaplan-Meier analysis with stratification to age and indication of TURP were performed.We further performed an age-and sex-matched survival analysis with the general population using data from the Census and Statistics Department of the hong Kong Special Administrative Region(hong Kong,China).From January 2002 to December 2012,3496 patients undergoing TURP were included in our study,with 1764 patients in the LUTS group and 1732 patients in the AROU group.Old age,ischemic heart disease,cerebrovascular accident,and AROU were risk factors of mortality.Patients aged80 years.Compared to the general population,younger patients in the LUTS group appeared to have better survival(80 years,survival was similar with the general population in both the LUTS and AROU groups.In conclusion,AROU at young age was associated with mortality,while early detection and management of LUTS may improve survival.

Using recombinant adhesive proteins as durable and green flame-retardant coatings

Current fire retardants are known to be toxic to humans and our environment.As environmental-friendly flame retardants(FRs),protein-based flame retardants have been studied extensively recently,even though they are not durable.In this study,we designed,synthesized and tested a durable protein-based FR through the fusion of the adhesion domain from either mussel foot protein-5(mfp-5)or cellulose-binding domain(CBD)with flame retardant protein(SR protein and alpha casein).We first verified the expression of the recombinant proteins in Escherichia coli using Western blot.Then,we coated the fusion protein(carrying cell lysates)to cotton fabrics and wood and verified with Infrared(IR)spectroscopy.Using a vertical burning test and wood flammability test,we confirmed the flame retardancy of the materials after the protein coating.In the vertical burning test,the SR protein and alpha casein flame retardant proteins with the CBD adhesion domain showed a 50.0%and 43.3%increase in flame retardancy.The data is also consistent in the wood flame retardancy test.Confocal imaging experiments also suggested these new fire retardants can be preserved on the materials well even after washing.Overall,our results showed that flame-retardant proteins with adhesion domains are high potential candidates of green alternative flame retardants.

目的探討標準算法與肺算法重建技術對低劑量胸部薄層CT圖像質量的影響。方法收集2020年1月~2020年10月行胸部低劑量CT平掃的患者。應用GE Revolution 256層寬體探測器CT掃描儀,所得原始數據分別採用標準算法及肺算法進行重建,由一名資深技師與兩名高年資放射科醫師共同觀察,對各個病灶(磨玻璃結節、實性結節)的顯示圖像質量進行評估比較並打分,對比分析2組病灶2種不同重建算法的顯示效果。結果102例患者進行了胸部低劑量CT檢查。其中實性結節101個,磨玻璃結節45個。以上2組病灶2種不同重建算法的顯示效果中,磨玻璃結節在兩種算法中具有顯著差異(P<0.01)。實性結節病灶未見明顯統計學差異。結論與肺算法相比較,標準算法對於磨玻璃結節的顯示有優勢,對實性結節的顯示相似。

目的探討AI肺算法與標準算法對肺結節的檢出率及性質判斷等方面的差異。方法收集2022年8月1日~2022年12月31日於中國澳門鏡湖醫院影像科採集的肺部CT檢查圖像,對檢出的肺部結節分別應用AI肺算法與標準算法對其分析,比較兩種算法對肺結節的檢出率及性質判斷的影響。結果共納入了216例患者的肺部CT,發現肺内結節922個。AI系統肺算法與標準算法對肺實性結節的發現率比較沒有統計學意義(P=0.106);標準算法對肺磨玻璃結節的發現率高於肺算法,比較具有統計學意義(P=0.00)。結論肺算法與標準算法在AI系統對肺結節的檢出方面有較大影響,在實際工作中應該同時結合應用。

胃腸道澱粉樣變性可局限於腸道,或作為全身性受累的一部份。在一項包含2,334例澱粉樣變性患者的回顧性研究中,76例患者(3%)存在經活檢證實的胃腸道澱粉樣蛋白沉積,其中約80%具有全身性澱粉樣變性,約20%為胃腸道澱粉樣變性而無證據表明存在相關漿細胞病或其他器官受累[1]。現報導1例僅累及胃腸道的澱粉樣變性病例。
