Effects of oil contamination and bioremediation on geotechnical properties of highly plastic clayey soil

Leakage of oil and its derivatives into the soil can change the engineering behavior of soil as well as cause environmental disasters.Also,recovering the contaminated sites into their natural condition and making contaminated materials as both environmentally and geotechnically suitable construction materials need the employment of remediation techniques.Bioremediation,as an efficient,low cost and environmentalfriendly approach,was used in the case of highly plastic clayey soils.To better understand the change in geotechnical properties of highly plastic fine-grained soil due to crude oil contamination and bioremediation,Atterberg limits,compaction,unconfined compression,direct shear,and consolidation tests were conducted on natural,contaminated,and bioremediated soil samples to investigate the effects of contamination and remediation on fine-grained soil properties.Oil contamination reduced maximum dry density(MDD),optimum moisture content(OMC),unconfined compressive strength(UCS),shear strength,swelling pressure,and coefficient of consolidation of soil.In addition,contamination increased the compression and swelling indices and compressibility of soil.Bioremediation reduced soil contamination by about 50%.Moreover,in comparison with contaminated soil,bioremediation reduced the MDD,UCS,swelling index,free swelling and swelling pressure of soil,and also increased OMC,shear strength,cohesion,internal friction angle,failure strain,porosity,compression index,and settlement.Microstructural analyses showed that oil contamination does not alter the soil structure in terms of chemical compounds,elements,and constituent minerals.While it decreased the specific surface area of the soil,and the bioremediation significantly increased the mentioned parameters.Bioremediation resulted in the formation of quasi-fibrous textures and porous and agglomerated structures.As a result,oil contamination affected the mechanical properties of soil negatively,but bioremediation improved these properties.

提出一种计算超大颗粒混合土最大干密度的新方法。首先,利用人工神经网络对混合土的大规模压实试验数据进行分析,确定影响压实度的主要因素。然后,将这些因素加到遗传规划方法中,得到一个新的数学方程。与以往的修正方法相比,新方程与实验数据更符合。此外,混合土干密度与大多数基层土和超大颗粒的比例有关。在敏感性分析方面,当混合土中含有较大比例的超细粉土时,混合土的组成受超大颗粒的规格(如比重和最大粒径)的控制,而随着这些因素的增加,混合土壤的干密度也随之增大。在超大颗粒含量较低的混合土中,基层土主要控制混合土的压实特性。此外,如果基土以较高的干密度压实,加入过大的颗粒会稍微改善混合土的干密度。相反,在干密度较低的基层土壤中添加过大的颗粒会产生干密度较大的混合土。通过增大超细粉土与基土的最大粒径差,提高了混合土的干密度。

On the prediction of methane adsorption in shale using grey wolf optimizer support vector machine approach

With the advancement of technology,gas shales have become one of the most prominent energy sources all over the world.Therefore,estimating the amount of adsorbed gas in shale resources is necessary for the technical and economic foresight of the production operations.This paper presents a novel machine learning method called grey wolf optimizer support vector machine(GWO-SVM)to predict adsorbed gas.For this purpose,a data set containing temperature,pressure,total organic carbon(TOC),and humidity has been collected from several sources,and the GWO-SVM model was created based on it.The results show that this model has R-squared and root mean square error equal to 0.982 and 0.08,respectively.Also,the results ensure that the proposed model gives an excellent prediction of the amount of adsorbed gas compared to previously proposed models.Besides,according to the sensitivity analysis,among the input parameters,humidity has the highest effect on gas adsorption.

Lettuce is a perishable vegetable that its shelf life is limited by detrimental texture changes and enzymatic activities during postharvest storage.One of solutions that can be used in storage and distribution of this product is modified atmosphere packaging(MAP).But its effects on the mechanical properties of the product have not been studied.This information would be beneficial in inspection of eating quality and later processing such as cutting and shredding.This research aimed to study effect of active MAP technology on the postharvest mechanical properties of lettuce at different storage periods.It was found that MAP had a significant effect on the tension property of the lettuce leaf.MAP treatment preserved the brittleness of the specimens during storage,but the control ones lost their brittleness and tolerated greater tension.Stiffness and rupture energy were significantly affected by MAP with P values of 0.01 and 0.05,respectively.Also,stiffness of the MAPtreated samples was higher than the control at the same storage time.The findings are due to reducing respiration,transpiration and bacterial growth by MAP which delays nutrient decomposition and maintains the original color and texture.

Co-detection and isolation of Leishmania and Crithidia among naturally infected Tatera indica(Rodentia: Muridae) in Fars province, southern Iran

Objective:To explore the co-detection of natural infection of Trypanosomatidae parasites such as Leishmania and Crithidia in reservoir hosts of leishmaniasis.Methods:Rodent populations were monitored in two endemic foci of cutaneous leishmaniasis of Fars province,southern Iran from March to October 2016.Rodents were trapped alive in several parts of Shiraz and Kharameh cities.Afterwards,their organs were prepared for detection of Leishmania and Crithidia species by molecular,microscopic,and culture methods.Results:Totally,115rodents of five species;Tatera indica(T.indica)(85),Rattus rattus(12),Meriones libycus(9).Mus musculus(7),and Rattus norvegicus(2),were trapped alive and their tissue samples were examined using microscopic,cultivation,and molecular assays.Overall,59(51.3%)rodents were positive for Leishmania or Crithidia parasites.The highest rate(61.2%;52/85)of Leishmania infection was related to the T.indica population.The cultivatioin,and molecular observations showed that two(2.4%;2/85)of T.indica(foot-pad,and spleen samples)were positive to Crithidia.Conclusions:This is the first report of Crithidia infection in T.indica in Iran.Consequently,more epidemiological and ecological studies are needed to understand the role of Crithidia and Leishmania in T.indica.

Juniperus species （juniper） are resistant to drought and have medicinal properties. In order to investigatethe condition of juniper reproduction and prevent a decline in its area, largely caused by problems in natural regeneration, the asexual reproduction of juniper has received special attention besides its sexual propagation. Among the six species of juniper in Iran, the most abundant are Juniperus polycarpos and J. excelsa. Juniperus polycarpos is ambi-sexual and J. excelsa unisexual. We show that collecting seeds in September provided for better germination than in November. In sexual propagation 82.0% and in asexual （graft） 47.6% success were achieved. Compared to a mixture of water, lime and hormones, a natural treatment of only water had better results. Diurnal change of temperature increased germination of juniper seeds over a constant temperature. Aphyllous stem cuttings from mature and old trees are less successful in rooting than leafy cuttings of juniper saplings. A treatment with Aaterra significantly reduced the percentage of rooted cuttings and total root length. Aliette, Fongarid, Octave, Benomyl, Delsene M and Maneb fungicides significantly increased the percentage of rooted cuttings but did not affect total root length. Autumn explants formed more calli than spring explants. Successful multiplication was achieved by treating buds with a mixture of 0.7% polyvinyl pyrrolidone （PVP） and 2% sucrose and cultured in a basal MS or WRC medium, with a maximum number of new buds. In consideration of extracted material of juniper species in remedy of infectious, fungus, contagious diseases as well as for drought resistance and longevity of this species in severe arid environmental conditions and various industrial applications, reproduction and seed production by micro propagation and biotechnology are necessary.

Evaluation of Sediment Transport in the Naiband Gulf Area Using Mike21

Naiband Gulf is part of Naiband National Park known as Iran’s first marine national park. It is Iran’s most important habitats in the northern Persian Gulf due to mangrove forests, coral community, and community of marine animals. The study examines the sediment transport in the Naiband Gulf and around it, where to achieve this. First, the required data including coastline information, sediment profile, and bathymetry information and waves are obtained. Then by Mike21, 2011 Version models, it was attempted to simulate waves and currents due to it in the coastal zone to determine the rate and direction of sediment transport in the Naiband Gulf area. The results obtained in this study indicate that the majority of sediment transport directions on both sides of the gulf have been internal. The existence of structures in the north and south of the Gulf has reduced alongshore sediment flows and sedimentation, especially in the south of the gulf that is a serious threat to corals.

Colorectal cancer usually present with known symptoms while there are less common manifestation including abscess formation which can be intra or extra peritoneal. A 60-year-old Caucasian male with a history of RLQ abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and anorexia from 15 days ago referred to surgery ward. Ultrasound showed a hypoachoic lesion with diameters 50 mm × 70 mm in RLQ of abdomen and a round echogenic area in right lobe of liver with diameter 15 mm. The findings were revealed an abscess located in right iliac fossa then local drainage of abscess was performed. Four days later the patient was re-admitted because of severe abdominal distention and lack of bowel movement. Laparoscopy was performed before proceeding with further examinations, due to the poor general condition of the patient. The sigmoid was adherent into the abdominal wall and mild intestinal loop distention and apple-core view was observed during operation. Cancer of sigmoid complicated by a right iliac fossa abscess was diagnosed and Hartman colestomy was undertaken. At the last follow-up examination 3 months after operation, the patient was in good health with no clinical evidence of recurrence.

＜正＞A nonlinear adaptive robust speed tracking controller is presented for a three-phase surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor（SPMSM）considering the control strategy of maximum torque control（MTC）related to this motor.Ignoring the motor iron losses,the proposed controller is designed based on combination of input-output feedback linearization（IOFL）control and adaptive sliding mode technique.The proposed adaptive sliding mode controller estimates the unknown uncertainties without using sign（.）or sat（.）function.Hence,it reduces chattering or steady state error phenomenon.In addition,in order to make the drive system control robust to load torque disturbance,the stator current reference signal is predicted by another adaptive sliding mode controller that has no reaching phase and has a low sliding mode chattering.Finally,the effectiveness and feasibility of the proposed control approach is demonstrated by computer simulation.The results obtained confirm that the desired speed reference command is perfectly tracked in spite of motor parameter uncertainties and load torque disturbance.

Invasive candidiasis(IC) bears a high risk of morbidity and mortality in the intensive care units(ICU). With the current advances in critical care and the use of widespectrum antibiotics, invasive fungal infections(IFIs) and IC in particular, have turned into a growing concern in the ICU. Further to blood cultures, some auxil-iary laboratory tests and biomarkers are developed to enable an earlier detection of infection, however these test are neither consistently available nor validated in our setting. On the other hand, patients' clinical status and local epidemiology data may justify the empiric antifungal approach using the proper antifungal option. The clinical approach to the management of IC in febrile, non-neutropenic critically ill patients has been defined in available international guidelines; nevertheless such recommendations need to be customized when applied to our local practice. Over the past three years, Iranian experts from intensive care and infectious diseases disciplines have tried to draw a consensus on the management of IFI with a particular focus on IC in the ICU. The established IFI-clinical forum(IFI-CF), comprising the scientific leaders in the field, has recently come up with and updated recommendation on the same(June 2014). The purpose of this review is to put together literature insights and Iranian experts' opinion at the IFI-CF, to propose an updated practical overview on recommended approaches for the management of IC in the ICU.
