AIM: To compare the success rate of monocanalicular versus pushed monocanalicular silicone intubation(PMCI)of the nasolacrimal duct for congenital nasolacrimal duct obstruction(CNLDO).METHODS: In a prospective randomized clinical trial 53 eyes of 49 patients with CNLDO underwent either monocanalicular silicone intubation(MCI)(n =28 eyes) or PMCI(n =25 eyes). All procedures were performed by 1oculoplastic surgeon. Treatment success was defined as the complete resolution of epiphora at 3mo after tube ***: The surgical outcome was assessed in 20 eyes with MCI and 20 eyes with PMCI. The mean age of treatment was 26.25 ±10.08mo(range, 13-49mo) for MCI and 26.85±12.25mo(range, 16-68mo) for PMCI. Treatment success was achieved in 18 of 20 eyes(90.0%) in the MCI group compared with 10 of 20 eyes(50%) in the PMCI group(P =0.01). In the PMCI group, the tube loss(30%)was greater than the MCI group(5%), however the differences between the 2 groups proved to be not significant(P =0.91).CONCLUSION: Our results indicate that MCI has higher success rate in CNLDO treatment compared with PMCI in this small series of patients.

Vegetation on river banks and bed roughness are important factors affecting flow structure, sediment transport, erosion and geomorphology in rivers. In this experimental study, the impacts of vegetation on flume walls, grain size of bed gravels and aspect ratio on characteristics of shear stress distribution, Coles' wake parameter, the kinematic energy correction factor (α) and the momentum correction factor (β) have been assessed. Reynolds stress distribution illustrates a three-layer pattern when the aspect ratio is smaller than 2. In addition, the aspect ratio and changes of vegetation affect α, β as well as the Coles' wake parameter Π.

The movement of bedload in subcritical flow produces additional roughness as compared to flow in a rigid bed. The magnitude of this bed load roughness is proportional to the thickness of the sediment layer moving along the bed, the particle size and the sediment concentration. In a supercritical flow, however, further resistance is expected due to the momentum absorption by the high flow velocity. In this study the effect of sediment movement on the flow resistance in supercritical flow was experimentally investigated. The experiments included flows over smooth and rough beds carrying sediment of mean diameters D 50 =2.80, 5.42 and 7.06 mm in a rigid rectangular channel. The results show that the sediment transport may increase the friction factor by up to 90% and 60% in smooth and rough beds, respectively. Bedload extracts its momentum from the flow, which causes a reduction of near bed flow velocity and steeper velocity gradient near the bed resulting in an increase in shear velocity as well as in roughness height. The increase in friction factor is directly related to bedload concentration and particle size.

A powerful and environmentally benign method has been developed for the one-pot synthesis of 4-substituted-1,5-benzodiazepines via the three-component reaction of a series of aldehydes with dimedone and o-phenylenediamine using [H-NMP][HSO_4] as a Brnsted acidic ionic liquid catalyst under solvent-free conditions. The key benefits of this new method over existing techniques include high yields, the use of a green catalyst, short reaction times and facile catalyst separation.

Considering failures during machinery processes such as drilling,a precautionary analysis involving delamination and the corresponding dissipated energy is required,especially for composite *** this context,because of the complexity of both the analysis procedure and experimental test setup,most studies prefer to represent mode Ⅰ and Ⅲ interlaminar crack propagation instead of that involving mode Ⅱ.Therefore,in this study,the effect of mode Ⅱ delamination and corresponding interlaminar crack propagation was considered during the drilling process of multilayered glass/polyester composites using both numerical and experimental *** the experimental procedure,the mechanical properties of the glass/polyester specimens were obtained according to ASTM *** addition,the interlaminar mixed-mode(Ⅰ/Ⅱ)loadings were determined using an ARCAN test fixture so that the fracture toughness of glass/polyester could then be *** mode Ⅱ critical strain energy release rate(CSERR)was then obtained using an experimental test performed using an ARCAN fixture and the virtual crack closure technique(VCCT).It was determined that the numerical approach was in accordance with the experiments,and more than 95%of crack propagation could be attributed to mode Ⅱ compared to the two other modes.

A Comprehensive Overview on the Latest Progress in the Additive Manufacturing of Metal Matrix Composites: Potential, Challenges, and Feasible Solutions

Nowadays, as an emerging technology, additive manufacturing(AM) has received numerous attentions from researchers around the world. The method comprises layer-by-layer manufacturing of products according to the 3D CAD models of the objects. Among other things, AM is capable of producing metal matrix composites(MMCs). Hence, plenty of works in the literature are dedicated to developing different types of MMCs through AM processes. Hence, this paper provides a comprehensive overview on the latest research that has been carried out on the development of the powder-based AM manufactured MMCs from a scientific and technological viewpoint, aimed at highlighting the opportunities and challenges of this innovative manufacturing process. For instance, it is documented that AM is not only able to resolve the reinforcement/matrix bonding issues usually faced with during conventional manufacturing of MMCs, but also it is capable of producing functionally graded composites and geometrically complex objects. Furthermore, it provides the opportunity for a uniform distribution of the reinforcing phase in the metallic matrix and is able to produce composites using refractory metals thanks to the local heat source employed in the method. Despite the aforementioned advantages, there are still some challenges needing more attention from the researchers. Rapid cooling nature of the process, significantly different coe fficient of expansion of the matrix and reinforcement, processability, and the lack of suitable parameters and standards for the production of defect-free AM MMCs seem to be among the most important issues to deal with in future works.

Large underground caverns are commonly used in variety of applications. In many cases, because of the geomechanical limitations of dimensions and requirement of high volume, several parallel caverns are used. Plastic zone integration requires a larger rock pillar distance of theses adjacent caverns while eco- nomic and access reasons require smaller distance. In lran many underground projects are located in West and South West, Asmari formation covers a large part of these regions. The stability of underground spaces that are constructed or will be constructed in this formation has been investigated. A proper cross section based on plastic analysis and a stability criterion has been proposed for each region. Finally, in each case, allowable rock pillar between adjacent caverns with similar dimension was determined with two methods （numerical analysis and fire service law）. Results show that Fire Service Law uses a very con- servative safety factor and it was proposed to use a correction factor for allowable distance based on application of underground space.

Discriminating barren and fertile intrusions is one of the main challenges in the search for rare-element *** comprising more than one element can make discrimination of productive and barren samples more *** diagrams distinguish samples by simultaneous means of positive and/or negative correlations between variables.A ternary diagram for S-type peraluminous granites has been obtained in this ***,a database composed of Ta-bearing and barren granitic systems was created,then geochemical behavior of trace elements was studied,and statistical investigations were done using GCDkit software,which resulted in the Ga-(Nb+Ta)-(Nb/Ta)(Zr/Hf)ternary diagram which can distinguish the non-mineralized granites from productive *** Ta-bearing samples,which are situated in the fertile field in the diagram,are those which have high Nb and Ta contents,elevated Ga content and the lowest Nb/Ta and Zr/Hf values.
