Results of the Measurement of the Collimator Hole Angulation for Different Collimators of SPECT with Adaptive Quality Control Phantom

The Adaptive Quality Control Phantom (AQCP) is the computer-controlled phantom which positions and moves a radioactive source in the Field of View (FOV) of an imaging nuclear medicine device on a definite path to produce any spatial distribution of gamma rays to perform the QC Tests such as the Collimator Hole Angulation (CHA) of Single Photon Emission Computer Tomography (SPECT). The collimator hole angulation for seven collimators were measured with the method by using a point source and computer-controlled cylindrical positioning. In this method the displacement of the image of a point source examined as the AQCP move point source vertically away from the collimator face. The results of the high-accuracy measurement method of CHA show that the measurement accuracy for absolute angulation errors is better than ±0.024°. The Root Mean Square (RMS) of CHA for LEHR, LEHS, LEUHR, MEGP-250, MEGP-300, MEGP-360 and HEPH collimators of SMV dual heads camera were measured to be 0.290°, 0.292°, 0.208°, 0.194°, 0.181°, 0.177°, 0.150°, respectively. The Root Mean Square (RMS) of CHA for LEGP, MEGP and HEGP collimators of GE Millennium MG were measured to be 0.154°, 0.220° and 0.202° respectively. It is to be added in this connection that the measured RMS of CHA for LEHR collimator with the distance variation from the collimator’s surface +/– 1 mm has been varied +/– 0.04 degree.

Water quality and occurrence of water-borne diseases in the Gaza strip are vivid examples for most developing societies. In recent years, the quality and quantity of groundwater, the only source of waters in the Gaza strip, have deteriorated markedly. A general rundown of the infrastructure and water distribution networks, in particular, the spread of cesspools, excessive use of pesticides and fertilizers, and improper treatment and disposal of wastewater remain major contributing factors to the continued deterioration in the water status in the Gaza strip. Without a doubt, the (Israeli)-Palestinian conflict had a clear negative impact on the water sector in the Gaza strip. Apparently, there is a dire need to adopt the WHO’s water safety plan in the management of Gaza’s water supply systems from catchment to consumer’s tap in order to maintain the sustainability and quality of water resources and prevent outbreaks of waterborne diseases. Therefore, this review has been prepared to highlight the overall picture of the water dilemma in the Gaza strip in the last years and in addition, to identify the sources, sorts, levels, and health risks of consequence to microbial contamination of water. The impact of political conflicts on the water sector in the Gaza strip also was reviewed. Furthermore, recommendations were formulated in order to assist and guide future researchers, stakeholders, and policymakers to avoid the more exacerbation of water contamination as well as to protect public health.

Ultrasound Guided Port-A-Cath Implantation

Purpose: The use of port catheters is well accepted in the management of patients with malignancy. In this study, we compare the technical success and the complication rates of ultrasound guided Port-A-Cath implantation with doing this procedure by using the anatomical landmark method. Methods: In a retrospective study, from 2006 to 2009, medical files of 104 patients who had undergone Port-A-Cath implantation were reviewed. The indication for port catheter implantation was malignancy in all cases. Among our patients, Port-A-Cath implantation was done in 63 patients by using landmark method and in 41 patients by guidance of ultrasound. All patients had been observed for complications including pain, port infection, and port thrombus, thrombus of central veins, skin necrosis, and success in using of Port-A-Cath for at least one month following the procedure, in the vascular clinic. Results: in landmark method group, 2 catheters were non-functional just after placement (3.2%) while all Port-A-Caths in ultrasound-guided group were functional. Ten patients (15.9%) in land mark group and 1 patient (2.4%) in ultrasound-guided group were complicated. The difference between complication rate in anatomic landmarks method and ultrasound-guided method was statistically significant (p There was no significant difference in two groups in duration of port placement (p < 0.345), age (p < 0.444), site of port placement (p < 0.244) or type of malignancy (p < 0.18). Conclusion: Considering high rate of success and low complications in placement of Port-A-Cath with ultrasound guidance, this method is superior to the land mark method in patients with malignancy.

Background: Breast cancer is the most prevalent cancer and results in 14% of cancer-related deaths among women worldwide. The aim of this study is to investigate the anticancer effects of Silymarin on two breast cancer cell lines (BT-474, SK-BR-3). Methods and Material: Two breast cancer cell lines—SK-BR-3 and BT-474—were incubated for 24 hours in standard conditions before adding 100, 200, 400, 800, 1600 μM Silymarin to each well. Alamar blue was then added to the wells after 24, 48 and 72 hours of incubation and cell viability was determined using fluorescence reader to detect the optical density. Results were analyzed using generalized estimating equations (GEE) method in STATA 12.0. Results: we demonstrated the?Silybum marianum?inhibition of two-cell lines SK-BR-3 and BT-474 growth at different concentrations after 24, 48 and 72 hours. Silymarin increased cell death in both cell lines. Conclusion: Silymarin can be combined with other anti-neoplastic agents to obtain better results.

Ecologic study of serum selenium and upper gastrointestinal cancers in Iran

AIM:Both observational and experimental studies have shown that higher selenium status reduces the risk of upper gastrointestinal cancers in selenium deficient populations. Recent cancer registry data have shown very different rates of esophageal cancer(EC)and gastric cancer(GC)in four Provinces of Iran,namely Ardabil,Mazandaran,Golestan, and *** aim of this study was to have a preliminary assessment of the hypothesis that high rates of EC in Golestan and high rates of GC in Ardabil may be partly attributable to selenium deficiency. METHODS:We measured serum selenium in 300 healthy adults from An:labil(n=100),Mazandaran(n=50),Golestan (n=100),and Kerman(n=50),using inductively coupled plasma,with dynamic reaction cell,mass spectrometry(ICP- DRC-MS)at the US Centers for Disease Control(Atlanta, Georgia). RESULTS:The median serum selenium concentrations were very different in the four *** medians(IQR)for selenium in Ardabil,Mazandarn,Golestan,and Kerman were 82(75-94),123(111-132),155(141-173),and 119 (110-128)μg/L,respectively(P<0.001).The results of linear regression showed that the Province variable,by itself, explained 76% of the variance in log selenium(r^2=0.76). The proportion of the populations with a serum selenium more than 90 μg/L(the concentration at which serum selenoproteins are saturated)was 100% in Golestan, Kerman,and Mazandaran but only 29% in Ardabil. CONCLUSION:Our findings suggest that selenium defidency is not a major contributor to the high incidence of EC seen in northeastern Iran,but it may play a role in the high incidence of GC in Ardabil Province. 本文的研究范围是对采用当地的旧报纸/旧杂志纸漂白脱墨浆作为化机浆的增强配浆来生产新闻纸进行评估。对当地的旧报纸/旧杂志纸按三种不同的比率进行取样后重新打浆、脱墨和过氧化氢漂白,采用DTPA和EDTA分别作为螯合剂。获得的最好的脱墨浆与长纤维(LF)浆和当地的化机浆混合,确定了制备的手抄片的强度和光学性能。结果表明采用EDTA的漂白脱墨浆可以将配比提高到30%,与化机浆和长纤维浆混合,减少长纤维浆的消耗。EDTA的结果更好些,化学性能和机械性能的结果都比DTPA好。EDTA对于强度性能的影响机理有助于防止过氧化氢分解,因此在漂白段可以改良更多的木质素,从而获得更好的强度性能。
