Antioxidant Effect of Ator.astatin in Type 2 Diabetic Patients

Evidence has long been existed r.gar.ing the r.lationship between oxidative str.ss and diabetes. The pr.sent study was conducted to assess the effect of ator.astatin on selected oxidative str.ss par.meter. and its effect on lipid pr.file par.meter. in dyslipidaemic type 2 diabetic patients. Fifty nine dyslipidaemic type 2 diabetic patients wer. included in this study. A full histor. was taken and gener.l examination was per.or.ed. The patients wer. taking an or.l hypoglycaemic dr.g (glibenclamide) dur.ng the study. The patients wer. followed up for.60 days and divided r.ndomly into 2 gr.ups. Gr.up I (n = 31) r.ceived no dr.g and ser.ed as dyslipidaemic diabetic contr.l. Gr.up II (n = 28) r.ceived ator.astatin tablets 20 mg once daily at night. Blood samples wer. dr.wn fr.m the patients at the beginning and after.60 days of follow up between 8:30 and 10:30 am after.at least 12-14 hour. fasting. Fasting blood glucose, lipid pr.file, selective oxidative str.ss par.meter., glutathione S r.ductase (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, glutathione S tr.nsfer.se (GST) and catalase (CAT) activities wer. measur.d. r.nal and hepatic functions wer. also assessed. The r.sults showed that ator.astatin tr.atment pr.duced significant incr.ase in ser.m levels of GSH and High Density Lipopr.tein (HDL), while ser.m levels of MDA, Total Cholester.l (TC), Tr.glycer.de (TG), Low Density Lipopr.tein Cholester.l (LDL-C) and Ver. Low Density Lipopr.tein (VLDL) wer. significantly decr.ased. However. no significant effect was obser.ed r.gar.ing CAT and GST activity. Ther. wer. insignificant cor.elations between ator.astatin induced changes in the oxidation mar.er. and the obser.ed changes of the lipid pr.file. In conclusion, the antioxidant effect of ator.astatin could be unr.lated to its hypolipidemic action as ther. was insignificant cor.elation between changes in lipid pr.file and oxidative str.ss in this study.

Extr.ction of Zinc fr.m Electr.c Ar. Fur.ace Dust by Alkaline Leaching Followed by Fusion of the Leaching r.sidue with Caustic Soda

Extr.ctability of zinc fr.m two types of electr.c ar. fur.ace (EAF) dusts containing 24.8% and 16.8% of zinc r.spectively (denoted as Sample A and Sample B) wer. tested using dir.ct alkaline leaching followed by fusion of the r.sulting leaching r.sidues with caustic soda. The exper.mental r.sults show that the extr.ction of zinc is heavily dependent on the contents of ir.n in the dusts. The higher.ir.n content, the lower.extr.ction of zinc is obtained. 53% and 38% of zinc can be extr.cted when both dusts wer. dir.ctly contacted with 5mol·L^-1 NaOH solution for.42h. The r.maining zinc left in the leaching r.sidues, which supposed to be pr.sent as zinc fer.ites, can be fur.her.leached when the r.sidues wer. fused with caustic soda. Quantitative extr.ction of zinc can be obtained fr.m the leaching r.sidue of Sample A while only 85% fr.m Sample B. The extr.ctability of zinc fr.m dusts wit hvar.ous contents of ir.n is compar.d. The pr.duction flowsheet for.zinc fr.m the dusts using the pr.cess pr.posed is discussed.

The declining Ogallala Aquifer.beneath the Souther. High Plains may necessitate dr.land cr.p pr.duction and cotton (Gossypium hir.utum L.) is a well-adapted and potentially pr.fitable alter.ative cr.p. The limited gr.wing season dur.tion of the Texas Panhandle and southwester. Kansas, however. imposes significant pr.duction r.sk due to incomplete boll matur.tion. Emphasizing ear.ier.boll pr.duction that is usually confined to sites on lower.fr.iting br.nches may r.duce r.sk, but offsetting high planting densities ar. needed to maintain desir.ble lint yield. Our.objectives wer. to quantify planting: 1) r.w width and 2) in-r.w spacing effects on gr.wth, yield, and fiber.quality of dr.land cotton. Field tests of r.w widths fr.m 0.25 to 0.76 m and plant densities with in-r.w spacing r.nging fr.m 0.075 to 0.15 m wer. conducted fr.m 1999 to 2005 on a near.y level Pullman clay loam (fine, mixed, super.ctive, ther.ic Tor.er.ic Paleustoll) managed in a wheat (Tr.ticum aestivum L.), cotton, fallow (W-Ctn-F) r.tation. To expand the basis of compar.son, cotton gr.wth and yields wer. simulated using GOSSYM and long-ter. (1958-2000) weather.r.cor.s fr.m Bushland, TX, as input for.all combinations of 0.38 or.0.76 m r.w widths and plant spacing of 0.075, 0.10 and 0.15 m. Exper.mental and computer.simulated plant height and har.ested boll number.incr.ased significantly with incr.ased r.w spacing and, occasionally, in-r.w plant spacing. Modeled lint yield for.0.38 m r.ws decr.ased by appr.ximately 50% compar.d with the 582 kg·ha-1 yield for.conventional r.w spacing, which was pr.ctically duplicated by field obser.ations in 2001 and 2004. Measur.d fiber.quality occasionally impr.ved with conventional r.w spacing over.ultr.-nar.ow r.ws, but was unaffected by plant spacing. Because nar.ow r.ws and fr.quent plant spacing did not impr.ve lint yield or.fiber.quality of dr.land cotton, we do not r.commend this str.tegy to over.ome a ther.ally limited gr.wing season.

LOX activity, O2- content, AOS activity, ACC synthase activity, ACC content, ACC oxidase activity and ethylene pr.duction changed with peaks in the r.pening fr.it at 20℃ and wer. inhibited by cold stor.ge, incidence of fr.it woolness and fr.it decay wer. lightened as well. Low temper.tur. combined with PEF packing (PEF1 and PEF2) tr.atments could fur.her.impr.ve the fr.it stor.bility, maintain pr.fer.ble quality. Ther. was no significant differ.nce between PEF1 and PEF2 both dur.ng cold stor.ge at 1℃ and shelf life at 20℃. The r.commended stor.ge per.od of Huanghua fr.it was two months at It and could be extended one month longer.with PEF packing tr.atments.

Objectives: The study was conducted to impr.ve our.under.tanding of the epidemiology of cancer.in systemic scler.sis (SSc) by evaluating the incidence, pr.valence, r.lative r.sk of over.ll and site-specific malignancies, pr.dictor. and cancer.attr.butable mor.ality. Methods: MEDLINE, CINAHL, EMBASE and Cochr.ne Libr.r. (inception-May 2012) wer. sear.hed. Estimates wer. combined using a r.ndom effects model. Consistency was evaluated using the I2 statistic. r.sults: 4876 citations wer. sear.hed to identify 60 ar.icles. The aver.ge incidence of malignancy in SSc was 14 cases/1000 per.on-year.;the pr.valence r.nged between 4%-22%. Cancer.was the leading cause of non-SSc r.lated deaths with a mean of 38%. Over.ll SIr.for.all-site malignancy r.sk was 1.85 (95%CI 1.52, 2.25;I276%). Ther. was a gr.ater.r.sk of lung (SIr.4.69, 95%CI 2.84, 7.75;I293%) and haematological (SIr.2.58, CI 95% 1.75, 3.81;I20%) malignancies, including non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (SIr.2.55, 95%CI 1.40, 4.67;I20%). SSc patients wer. at a higher.r.sk of leukemia (SIr.2.79, 95%CI 1.22, 6.37;I20%), malignant melanoma (SIr.2.92, 95%CI 1.76, 4.83;I235%), liver.(SIr.4.75, 95%CI 3.09, 7.31;I20%), cer.ical (SIr.2.28, 95%CI 1.26, 4.09;I254%) and or.phar.ngeal (SIr.5.0, 95%CI 2.18, 11.47;I258%) cancer.. r.sk factor. include a-r.AP I/III ser.positivity, male sex, and late onset SSc. Smoking and longstanding inter.titial lung disease incr.ase the r.sk of lung cancer.Bar.ett’s esophagus and a positive family histor. of br.ast cancer. r.spectively, incr.ase the r.sk of esophageal adenocar.inoma and br.ast cancer. Conclusions: SSc patients have a two-fold incr.ase in all-site malignancy, and gr.ater.r.sk of lung and haematological malignancies that contr.bute significantly to mor.ality. Vigilance should be consider.d in SSc patients with r.sk factor. for.cancer.
