Earthquake induced liquefaction is one of the main geo-disasters threating urban regions, which not only causes direct damages to buildings, but also delays both real-time disaster relief actions and reconstruction activities. It is thus important to assess liquefaction hazard of urban regions effectively and efficiently for disaster prevention and mitigation. Conventional assessment approaches rely on engineering indices such as the factor of safety(FS) against liquefaction, which cannot take into account directly the uncertainties of soils. In contrast, a physics simulation-based approach, by solving soil dynamics problems coupled with excess pore water pressure(EPWP) it is possible to model the uncertainties directly via Monte Carlo simulations. In this study, we demonstrate the capability of such an approach for assessing an urban region with over 10 000 sites. The permeability parameters are assumed to follow a base-10-lognormal distribution among 100 model analyses for each site. A dynamic simulation is conducted for each model analysis to obtain the EPWP results. Based on over 1 million EPWP analysis models, we obtained a probabilistic liquefaction assessment. Empowered by high performance computing, we present for the first time a probabilistic liquefaction hazard assessment for urban regions based on dynamics analysis, which consider soil uncertainties.

Cell surface protein engineering facilitated by accumulation of information on genome and protein structure involves heterologous production and modifica- tion of cell surface proteins using genetic engineering, and is important for the development of high-performance whole-cell catalysts. In this field, cell surface display is a major technology by exposing target proteins, such as enzymes, on the cell surface using a cartier protein. The target proteins are fused to the carrier proteins that transport and tether them to the cell surface, as well as to a secretion signal. This paper reviews cell surface display systems for prokaryotic and eukaryotic cells from the perspective of carrier proteins, which determine the number of displayed molecules, and the localization, size, and direction （N- or C-terminal anchoring） of the passengers. We also discuss advanced methods for displaying multiple enzymes and a new method for the immobilization of whole-cell catalysts using adhesive surface proteins.

Surgeries for benign diseases of the extrahepatic bile duct(EHBD) are classified as lithotomy(i.e., choledocholithotomy) or diversion(i.e.,choledochojejunostomy). Because of technical challenges, laparoscopic approaches for these surgeries have not gained worldwide popularity. The right upper quadrant of the abdomen is advantageous for laparoscopic procedures,and laparoscopic choledochojejunostomy is safe and feasible. Herein, we summarize tips and pitfalls in the actual procedures of *** choledocholithotomy with primary closure of the transductal incision and transcystic C-tube drainage has excellent clinical outcomes;however, emergent biliary drainage without endoscopic sphincterotomy and preoperative removal of anesthetic risk factors are required. Elastic suture should never be ligated directly on the cystic duct. Interrupted suture placement is the first choice for hemostasis near the EHBD. To prevent progressive laceration of the EHBD, full-layer interrupted sutures are placed at the upper and lower edges of the transductal incision. Cholangioscopy has only two-way operation; using dedicated forceps to atraumatically grasp the cholangioscope is important for smart maneuvering. The duration of intraoperative stone clearance accounts for most of the operative time. Moreover, dedicated forceps are an important instrument for atraumatic grasping of the cholangioscope. Damage to the cholangioscope requires expensive repair. Laparoscopic approach for choledocholithotomy involves technical difficulties. I hope this document with the visual explanation and literature review will be informative for skillful surgeons.

The authors describe the relationships between categories of B-branes in dif- ferent phases of the non-Abelian gauged linear sigma model. The relationship is described explicitly for the model proposed by hori and Tong with non-Abelian gauge group that connects two non-birational Calabi-Yau varieties studied by Rcdland. A grade restriction rule for this model is derived using the hemisphere partition function and it is used to map B-type D-branes between the two Calabi-Yau varieties.

In this study, a new method for conversion of solid finite element solution to beam finite element solution is developed based on the meta-modeling theory which constructs a model consistent with continuum mechanics. The proposed method is rigorous and efficient compared to a typical conversion method which merely computes surface integration of solid element nodal stresses to obtain cross-sectional forces. The meta-modeling theory ensures the rigorousness of proposed method by defining a proper distance between beam element and solid element solutions in a function space of continuum mechanics. Results of numerical verification test that is conducted with a simple cantilever beam are used to find the proper distance function for this conversion. Time history analysis of the main tunnel structure of a real ramp tunnel is considered as a numerical example for the proposed conversion method. It is shown that cross-sectional forces are readily computed for solid element solution of the main tunnel structure when it is converted to a beam element solution using the proposed method. Further, envelopes of resultant forces which are of primary importance for the purpose of design, are developed for a given ground motion at the end.

To simulate the effects of burnable poison doping in nuclear fuel Uo2,Er2o3(or Gd2o3)-doped Ceo2 pellets were prepared. Changes in lattice constant and atomic disordering for Ceo2 due to the Er2o3 and Gd2o3 doping were measured by means of XRD and XAFS. By the Er2o3 doping,the lattice constant decreased,and a disordering of lattice structure was induced in the samples. The doping with Er2o3 also induced the disordering of atomic arrangement around Er atoms,which was observed through the change in XAFS spectra. In contrast,the effect of Gd2o3 doping was smaller than that of Er2o3 doping. The result was discussed in terms of ionic size of dopants in Ceo2 crystal.

BACKGRoUND:Three types of progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis(PFIC)have been identified,but their etiologies include unknown mechanisms. DATA SoURCES:A PubMed search on'progressive familial intrahepatic cholestasis'and'PFIC'was performed on the topic,and the relevant articles were reviewed. RESULTS:The etiologies of the three PFIC types still include unknown *** in PFIC type 1,enterohepatic circulation of bile acid should be *** acid,partial external biliary diversion and liver transplantation have been used for the treatment of PFIC patients according to disease course. CoNCLUSIoNS:Since the etiologies and disease mechanisms of PFIC are still unclear,detailed studies are urgently required. Strategies for more advanced therapies are also *** developments in the future are indispensable,especially for PFIC type 1 patients.
