This research is concerned with new developments and practical applications of a physically-based numerical model that incorporates new approaches for a finite elements solution to the steady/transient problems of the joint ground/surface water flows. Python scripts are implemented in Geographic Information System (GIS) to store, represent and take decisions on the simulated conditions related to the water resources management at the scale of the watershed. The proposed surface-subsurface model considers surface and groundwater interactions to be 2-D horizontally distributed and depth-averaged through a diffusive wave approach for surface flood routing. Infiltration rates, overland flows and evapotranspiration processes are considered by a diffuse discharge from surface water, non-saturated subsoil and groundwater table. Recent developments also allow for the management of surface water flow control through the capacity of diversion on river beds, spillways and outflow operations of floodgates in weirs and dams of reservoirs. Practical application regards the actual hydrology of the Mero River watershed, with two important water bodies mainly concerned with the water resources management at the Cecebre Reservoir and the present flooding of a deep coal mining excavation. The MELEF model (Modèle d’éLéments Fluides, in French) was adapted and calibrated during a period of five years (2008/ 2012) with the help of hydrological parameters, registered flow rates, water levels and registered precipitation, water uses and water management operations in surface and groundwater bodies. The results predict the likely evolution of the Cecebre Reservoir, the flow rates in rivers, the flooding of the Meirama open pit and the local water balances for different hydrological components.

Chagas disease is endemic in south America. One of the major preventive actions is removing the vector TI （Triatoma infestans） from household. Although households are frequently sprayed to eliminate TI, pets and domestic animals are natural storage for vector survival. This work proposes TI elimination from farm animals using IVM （ivermectin）, as a new strategy to Chagas disease control. Rhode island hens were divided into TG （treatment groups） and CG （control groups）. TG received IVM while CG received DMSO. TI used in the assay was fifth instar nymphs. Hens served as food source for TI. Blood was extracted for IVM chromatographic pharmacokinetic analysis. The pharmacokinetic models that best fitted the IVM plasma profiles were determined by means of the minimum Akaike information criterion estimation （MAICE） test. In TG nymphs mortality was 23.25% to 47.5% at 24-120 h, respectively. IVM plasma profile showed a first-order one-compartment model with a rapid absorption reaching a Cmax （maximum concentration） of 64.7 ± 15.4 ng/mL at 48 h （Troop） post-application. Our data shows that TI mortality is directly related to the plasma concentration of IVM and is up to 47.5% at 120 h. Therefore, ivermectin may have a potential effect on controlling TI vector in peri-domestic level.

Recent remote monitoring surveys of smoke produced by burning and forest fires using weather radar equipment showed excellent preliminary results, but their progress is hindered due to the high operating cost of radar systems. The fire danger rating index is a good indicator of the event occurrence probability, what contributes to the monitoring areas and adds value to the alert degree information. The application of FMA fire danger index ＂Formula de Monte Alegre＂ for areas in radar coverage radius of the S-band weather radar operated by the Meteorological Research Institute, IPMet, S^fo Paulo State University, efficiently optimize the use of the radar equipment, significantly reduce operational costs, enable new research and promise results which have already reduced the average response time between ignition and detection for less than 5 minutes. It reduces more than 50% response time considered optimal for conventional detection systems. Thus, the ＂FMA＂ values act as a trigger （on-off） in the remote monitoring system of forest fires, optimizing its use at low cost, avoiding the possible stress of equipment and enabling the advance of research monitoring, detection of burnings and forest fires using weather radar.

Edible insects, escamoles ant eggs of the Formicidae family are consumed by cultural tradition at rural communities and by sensory characteristics at high class restaurants of Mexico; however, people ignore the importance of insect consumption in the nutrition of humans. Laboratory spectroscopy methods in food analysis represent benefits in time and precision. The aim of this study is to assess macronutrients and micronutrients of escamoles and eggs by spectroscopic methods to inform population the benefits they provide in health and to mention the advantage in the use of these techniques at laboratory work. Samples were gather the second week of March and April 2012, at Hidalgo State and analyze moisture and macronutrients by AOAC （Association of Official Analytical Chemistry） methods, amino acids by cation exchange chromatography, tryptophan was determined by a colorimeter method, fatty acids by GC （gas chromatography） using helium as a carrier （AOAC）, fat soluble vitamins A, D and E by HPLC （high performance liquid chromatography）, and minerals by atomic absorption spectrophotometers and phosphorus by colorimeter （AOAC）. Data showed high amount in proteins, lipids and minerals; low in fiber and soluble carbohydrates; contained all essential amino acids. Fatty acids contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. Fat soluble vitamins A, D and E. Minerals： sodium, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium and manganese. Escamoles ant eggs include polyunsaturated fatty acids essential for mental development, vitamin A to prevent eye diseases, vitamin E as antioxidant and vitamin D involved in calcium absorption that low intake, impair grow and bone health. Iron and zinc contained anemia. Regarding the laboratory benefits, needs less expensive chemicals, testing is clean, rapid and easy results of multiple samples, but it is required to handle by qualified chemists. AIM To identify the current indications and outcomes of total pancreatectomy at a high-volume center. METHODS A single institutional retrospective study of patients undergoing total pancreatectomy from 1995 to 2014 was *** One hundred and three patients underwent totalpancreatectomy for indications including: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma(n = 42, 40.8%), intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms(n = 40, 38.8%), chronic pancreatitis(n = 8, 7.8%), pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors(n = 7, 6.8%), and miscellaneous(n = 6, 5.8%). The mean age was 66.2 years, and 59(57.3%) were female. Twenty-four patients(23.3%) underwent a laparoscopic total pancreatectomy. Splenic preservation and portal vein resection and reconstruction were performed in 24(23.3%) and 18 patients(17.5%), respectively. The 90 d major complications, readmission, and mortality rates were 32%, 17.5%, and 6.8% respectively. The 1-, 3-, 5-, and 7-year survival for patients with benign indications were 84%, 82%, 79.5%, and 75.9%, and for malignant indications were 64%, 40.4%, 34.7% and 30.9%, *** Total pancreatectomy, including laparoscopic total pancreatectomy, appears to be an appropriate option for selected patients when treated at a high-volume pancreatic center and through a multispecialty approach.

Captures and Diet of Three Sharks Species in the Veracruz Reef System

During July to November of 2008, the artisanal fisheries captured juvenile sharks belonging to the Carcharhinus and Sphyrnidae family in the Veracruz Reef System (south western Gulf of Mexico). The three most abundant organisms were of the species Sphyrna lewini, Carcharhinus brevipinna and Rhizoprionodon terraenovae. Local fisherman recognized five captured areas of sharks as a direct way or bycatch. Some of these areas are located near to eddies formations and river discharges (high productivity areas). These top predators fed on benthic and demersal prey of coastal and reef habits had been the Teleost group the most important item in its diet. However it is possible to observe differences in its feeding tendency.

Estimation of Contraction Coefficient of Gorlin Equation for Assessment of Aortic Valve Area in Aortic Stenosis

Background: The Gorlin equation is the reference method for the assessment of aortic valve area in aortic stenosis and is calculated using a constant, called the coefficient of contraction, which is empirically assumed to be 1. This coefficient is the ratio of effective aortic area to anatomic aortic area, and a value of 1 indicates that both are the same. The purpose of this study was to estimate the actual coefficient of contraction in patients with aortic stenosis and to evaluate its impact on aortic area as calculated by the Gorlin equation. Methods: We studied 17 patients with moderate to severe aortic stenosis. Effective aortic area was calculated using the continuity equation. Anatomic aortic area was obtained by planimetry with transesophageal echocardiography. Aortic valve area by the Gorlin equation was calculated from echocardiography data. The coefficient of contraction was derived as above. Results: The coefficient of contraction was inversely related to the pressure recovery. Effective area was correlated with anatomic area (r = 0.86, P 2). Aortic area by the Gorlin equation was not correlated with anatomic area, but the correlation became significant when the Gorlin equation was corrected for coefficient of contraction and pressure recovery. Conclusions: Using a coefficient of contraction of 1 in the Gorlin equation gives a poor correlation with anatomic area. Using the calculated coefficient of contraction for each patient and the mean gradient for pressure recovery improves the correlation with anatomic area. These facts could be taken in account when Gorlin equation is considered as the reference method.
