Cambrian Stem-group Cnidarians with a New Species from the Cambrian Series 3 of the Taebaeksan Basin, Korea

Five species, Lipopora lissa Jell and Jell, 1976, Lipopora daseia Jell and Jell, 1976, Tretocylichne perplexa Engeibretsen, 1993 from Australia, Cambroctoconus orientalis Park, Woo, lee, lee, lee, Han and Chough, 2011 from China, and Cambroctoconus kyrgyzstanicus Peel, 2014 from Kyrgyzstan, belonging to the Cambrian stem-group cnidarians have been documented in the fossil record. Cambroctoconus coreaensis sp. nov., interpreted here as a stem-group cnidarian, from the Seokgaejae section in the Daegi Formation, Taebaek Group （Cambrian Series 3）, Taebaeksan Basin, central-eastern Korean Peninsula, has a slender cup-shaped skeleton. A cladistic analysis produced 21 most parsimonious trees, which invariably placed the six stem-group cnidarians below the crown-group, but their relationships within the stem-group are unresolved. Nine out of the 21 trees suggest a monophyletic relationship for the Cambrian stem-group cnidarians, whereas in six other trees a monophyly of Cambroctoconus and Tretocylichne appeared as the sister-group to the crown-group cnidarians with Lipopora at the most basal branch. This result may reflect the fact that crown-group cnidarians evolved in the Precambrian, and suggests that the diversity of stem-group cnidarians was a result of an independent radiation in the Cambrian.

Quantifying and managing regional greenhouse gas emissions: Waste sector of Daejeon, Korea

A credible accounting of national and regional inventories for the greenhouse gas （GHG） reduction has emerged as one of the most significant current discussions. This article assessed the regional GHG emissions by three categories of the waste sector in Daejeon Metropolitan City （DMC）, Korea, examined the potential for DMC to reduce GHG emission, and discussed the methodology modified from Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change and Korea national guidelines. During the last five years, DMC＇s overall GHG emissions were 239 thousand tons C02 eq./year from eleven public environmental infrastructure facilities, with a population of 1.52 million. Of the three categories, solid waste treatment/disposal contributes 68%, whilst wastewater treatment and others contribute 22% and 10% respectively. Among GHG unit emissions per ton of waste treatment, the biggest contributor was waste incineration of 694 kg CO2 eq./ton, followed by waste disposal of 483 kg CO2 eq./ton, biological treatment of solid waste of 209 kg CO2 eq./ton, wastewater treatment of 0.241 kg CO2 eq./m3, and public water supplies of 0.067 kg CO2 eq./m3. Furthermore, it is suggested that the potential in reducing GHG emissions from landfill process can be as high as 47.5% by increasing landfill gas recovery up to 50%. Therefore, it is apparent that reduction strategies for the main contributors of GHG emissions should take precedence over minor contributors and lead to the best practice for managing GHGs abatement.

Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia associated with pregnancy:A case report

BACKGROUND Cryptogenic organizing pneumonia(COP),formerly known as bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia,is an extremely rare disease in *** this case,we report on COP diagnosed in recurrent pneumonia that does not respond to antibiotics in pregnant *** SUMMARY A 35-year-old woman with no prior lung disease presented with concerns of chest pain with cough,sputum,dyspnea,and mild fever at 11 wk’*** was diagnosed with community-acquired pneumonia and treated with antibiotics;her symptoms improved *** weeks after discharge,she was readmitted with aggravated *** computed tomography demonstrated multifocal patchy airspace consolidation and ground-glass opacities at the basal segments of the right lower lobe,at the lateral basal segment of the lower lobe,and at the lingular segment of the left upper *** lavage revealed an increased lymphocyte count and a decreased CD4/CD8 ***(0.5 mg/kg/d)was administered for 10 d after the second *** improved after 3 d of steroid treatment and other symptoms improved on the 5th day of steroid ***-delivery transbronchial lung biopsy further revealed the presence of granulation tissue with fibroblasts in smallbronchiole *** This case suggests that it is important to differentiate COP from atypical pneumonia in the deteriorated condition despite antibiotic treatment.

TGF-β2 downregulates osteogenesis under inflammatory conditions in dental follicle stem cells

Bone formation is important for the reconstruction of bone-related structures in areas that have been damaged by *** conditions such as those that occur in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, cystic fibrosis, and periodontitis have been shown to inhibit osteoblastic differentiation. This study focussed on dental follicle stem cells(DFSCs), which are found in developing tooth germ and participate in the reconstruction of alveolar bone and periodontal tissue in periodontal disease. After bacterial infection of inflamed dental tissue, the destruction of bone was observed. Currently, little is known about the relationship between the inflammatory environment and bone formation. Osteogenic differentiation of inflamed DFSCs resulted in decreased alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity and alizarin red S staining compared to normal DFSCs. Additionally, in vivo transplantation of inflamed and normal DFSCs demonstrated severe impairment of osteogenesis by inflamed DFSCs. Protein profile analysis via liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry was performed to analyse the differences in protein expression in inflamed and normal tissue. Comparison of inflamed and normal DFSCs showed significant changes in the level of expression of transforming growth factor(TGF)-β2. Porphyromonas gingivalis(P.g.)-derived lipopolysaccharide(LPS) was used to create in vitro inflammatory conditions similar to periodontitis. The osteogenic differentiation of LPS-treated DFSCs was suppressed, and the cells displayed low levels of TGF-β1 and high levels of TGF-β2. DFSCs treated with TGF-β2 inhibitors showed significant increases in alizarin red S staining and ALP activity. TGF-β1 expression was also increased after inhibition of TGF-β2. By examining inflamed DFSCs and LPS-triggered DFSCs, these studies showed both clinically and experimentally that the increase in TGF-β2 levels that occurs under inflammatory conditions inhibits bone formation.

Nusinersen for spinal muscular atrophy types Ⅱ and Ⅲ:a retrospective single-center study in South Korea

Background This study investigated the efficacy and safety of nusinersen,an antisense oligonucleotide,in patients with spinal muscular atrophy(SMA)types II(OMIM:253,550)or III(OMIM:253,400),including those with severe scoliosis or requiring respiratory support via mechanical *** Data from 40 patients with genetically confirmed SMA who were treated with nusinersen at our institute from March 2019 to April 2022 were retrospectively *** these,30 patients with an age of onset<3 years and not on permanent ventilation were *** and genetic characteristics were investigated,and motor function was evaluated based on the Hammersmith Functional Motor Scale-Expanded(HFMSE)*** The mean age of symptom onset was 1.2 *** patients were diagnosed with SMA type II(27/30,90%).Nusinersen was administered via computed tomography-guided or direct intrathecal injection in 87%(26/30)and 13%(4/30)of the patients,*** the 6-,14-,22-,and 26-month follow-ups,72%,71%,88%,and 86%of patients showed motor improvement,respectively,with mean changes in HFMSE scores of 2.10,2.88,4.21,and 5.29,*** analysis showed that the use of noninvasive ventilation was associated with poorer outcomes of motor *** Patients with SMA type II or III who received nusinersen treatment showed significant improvement in motor function.A longer treatment duration led to a higher number of patients with improved motor *** significant side effects of nusinersen were *** with SMA,even those with severe scoliosis or on respiratory support,can be safely treated using nusinersen.

Distribution of Chancelloriids in a Middle Cambrian Carbonate Platform Deposit, Taebaek Group, Korea

The onset of the Cambrian witnessed the diversification of ＂small shelly fossils （SSF）＂, which affected carbonate depositional system. One of the problematic SSF, chancelloriids, are common components of the early to middle Cambrian carbonate and shale, and their contributions toward Cambrian carbonates are not yet fully understood. This study assesses distribution patterns of chancelloriid sclerites in the Cambrian Series 3 Daegi Formation based on microfacies analysis and discusses their sedimentologic implications. In the lower part of the formation, partially articulated chancelloriid sclerites occur mainly in bioclastic packstone and grainstone facies, with isolated sclerite rays in nodular packstone to grainstone facies. In the middle part of the formation, chancelloriid fragments occur only sporadically in bioclastic wackestone to packstone, bioclastic grainstone and oolitic packstone to grainstone facies, whereas boundstone facies are nearly devoid of their fragments. There are no chancelloriid fragments in the upper part of the formation, which consists of oolitic packstone to grainstone facies. Chancelloriids are interpreted to have primarily occupied platform margin shoal environments, shedding their sclerites to surrounding areas, and thus contributed as sediment producers. The distribution of Daegi chancelloriid sclerites is similar to other Cambrian examples, with the exception of common chancelloriids in Cambrian Series 2 reefs and their apparent near absence in the Daegi and other Cambrian Series 3 reefs. This disparity resulted from changes in the ecologic niche of chancelloriids after the end-Cambrian Series 2 reef crisis, coupled with an overall decline of chancelloriids in the middle Cambrian.

Effect of polyethylene glycol on electrochemically deposited trivalent chromium layers

The structural characteristics of the trivalent chromium deposits and their interfacial behavior in the plating solution with and without polyethylene glycol molecules were observed by using various electrochemical methods such as cyclic voltammetry,open circuit potential transition,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy,scanning electron microscopy and X-ray photoelectron *** is shown that the polyethylene glycol molecules make the reductive current density lower in the trivalent chromium plating system and promote a hydrogen evolution reaction through their adsorption on the electrode *** the trivalent chromium layer formed from the polyethylene glycol-containing solution has somewhat higher density of cracks on its surface and results in a lower film resistance,lower polarization resistance,and higher capacitance in a corrosive *** is also revealed that the formation of chromium carbide layer is facilitated in the presence of polyethylene glycol,which means easier electrochemical codeposition of chromium and carbon,not single chromium deposition.

A neural network model is developed to search vast compositional space of high entropy alloys(HEAs).The model predicts the mechanical properties of HEAs better than several other ***’s because the special structure of the model helps the model understand the characteristics of constituent elements of *** addition,thermodynamics descriptors were utilized as input to the model so that the model predicts better by understanding the thermodynamic properties of HEAs.A conditional random search,which is good at finding local optimal values,was selected as the inverse predictor and designed two HEAs using the *** experimentally verified that the HEAs have the best combination of strength and ductility and this proves the validity of the model and alloy design *** strengthening mechanism of the designed HEAs is further discussed based on microstructure and lattice distortion *** present alloy design approach,specialized in finding multiple local optima,could help researchers design an infinite number of new alloys with interesting properties.

Long-term culture-induced phenotypic difference and efficient cryopreservation of small intestinal organoids by treatment timing of Rho kinase inhibitor

To investigate a suitable long-term culture system and optimal cryopreservation of intestinal organoid to improve organoid-based therapy by acquiring large numbers of *** were isolated from jejunum of C57BL/6 mouse. Two hundred crypts were cultured in organoid medium with either epidermal growth factor/Noggin/R-spondin1 (ENR) or ENR/CHIR99021/VPA (ENR-CV). For subculture, organoids cultured on day 7 were passaged using enzyme-free cell dissociation buffer (STEMCELL Technologies). The passage was performed once per week until indicated passage. For cryopreservation, undissociated and dissociated organoids were resuspended in freezing medium with or without Rho kinase inhibitor subjected to different treatment times. The characteristics of intestinal organoids upon extended passage and freeze-thaw were analyzed using EdU staining, methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay, qPCR and time-lapse live cell *** established a three-dimensional culture system for murine small intestinal organoids using ENR and ENR-CV media. Both conditions yielded organoids with a crypt-villus architecture exhibiting Lgr5+ cells and differentiated intestinal epithelial cells as shown by morphological and biochemical analysis. However, during extended passage (more than 3 mo), a comparative analysis revealed that continuous passaging under ENR-CV conditions, but not ENR conditions induced phenotypic changes as observed by morphological transition, reduced numbers of Lgr5+ cells and inconsistent expression of markers for differentiated intestinal epithelial cell types. We also found that recovery of long-term cryopreserved organoids was significantly affected by the organoid state, i.e., whether dissociation was applied, and the timing of treatment with the Rho-kinase inhibitor Y-27632. Furthermore, the retention of typical morphological characteristics of intestinal organoids such as the crypt-villus structure from freeze-thawed cells was observed
