Forecasting of Asian dust storm that occurred on May 10-13, 2011, using an ensemble-based data assimilation system

An ensemble-based assimilation system that used the MASINGAR ink-2 （Model of Aerosol Species IN the Global AtmospheRe Mark 2） dust forecasting model and satellite-derived aerosol optical thickness （AOT） data. processed in the JAXA （Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency） Satellite Monitoring for Environmental Studies （JASMES） system with MODIS （Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer） observations. was used to quantify the impact of assimilation on forecasts of a severe Asian dust storm during May 10-13. 2011. The modeled bidirectional reflectance function and observed vegetation index employed in JASMES enable AOT retrievals in areas of high surface reflectance, making JASMES effective for dust forecasting and early warning by enabling assimilations in dust storm source regions. Forecasts both with and without assimilation were validated using PM^0 observations from China, Korea, and Japan in the TEMM WG1 dataset. Only the forecast with assimilation successfully captured the contrast between the core and tail of the dust storm by increasing the AOT around the core by 70-150% and decreasing it around the tail by 20-30% in the 18-h forecast. The forecast with assimilation improved the agreement with observed PMlo concentrations, but the effect was limited at downwind sites in Korea and Japan because of the lack of observational constraints for a mis-forecasted dust storm due to cloud.

Delignification of disposable wooden chopsticks waste for fermentative hydrogen production by an enriched culture from a hot spring

Hydrogen （H2） production from lignocellulosic materials may be enhanced by removing lignin and increasing the porosity of the material prior to enzymatic hydrolysis. Alkaline pretreatment conditions, used to delignify disposable wooden chopsticks （DWC） waste, were investigated. The effects of NaOH concentration, temperature and retention time were examined and it was found that retention time had no effect on lignin removal or carbohydrate released in enzymatic hydrolysate. The highest percentage of lignin removal （41%） was obtained with 2% NaOH at 100℃, correlated with the highest carbohydrate released （67 mg/gpretreated DWC） in the hydrolysate. An enriched culture from a hot spring was used as inoculum for fermentative H2 production, and its optimum initial pH and temperature were determined to be 7.0 and 50℃, respectively. Furthermore, enzymatic hydrolysate from pretreated DWC was successfully demonstrated as a substrate for fermentative H2 production by the enriched culture. The maximum H2 yield and production rate were achieved at 195 mL H2/g total sugarsconsumed and 1 16 mL Hz/（***）, respectively.

Expert networks as science-policy interlocutors in the implementation of a monitoring reporting and verification （MRV） system

The Paris Agreement, which entered into effect in 2016, emphasizes a definite timeline for communicating and maintaining successive nationally determined con- tributions （NDCs） that it plans to achieve in addressing climate change. This calls for the development of a measurement, reporting and verification （MRV） system and a Capacity-building Initiative for Transparency （CBIT）. Though such actions are universally accepted by the Parties to the Paris Agreement, earlier studies have shown that there remain technological, social, political and financial constrains which will affect the development and deployment of such a system. In this paper, using a case study on MRV implementation in Bogor City in Indonesia, how the above-mentioned challenges can be overcome is outlined through a technological and policy innovation process where scientists and technologists （collectively referred as expert networks） can join hands with local governments and national policy makers in designing, development and implementation of an MRV system that meets the local, national and global requirements. Through the case study it is further observed that expert networks can act as interactive knowledge generators and policy interlocutors in bridging technology with policy. To be specific, first, a brief history of the international context of MRV and CBIT is outlined. Next, the theoretical under- pinning of the study is contextualized within the existing theories related to public policy and international relations. Finally, the case study is outlined and investigated where the engagement of an expert-network and policy makers in the design, development and implementation of an MRV tool is showcased.

Discharge of a Shock Wave from an Open End of a Tube

When a Pressure wave propagates along a constant area straight tube and reaches at the open end, an impulsive wave is emitted outward from the tube exit toward the surrounding area and causes an impulsive noise like a sonic boom. In order to clarify the magnitude of an impulsive wave obtained by the discharge of a weak shock wave born an open end of a tube in relation to the noise problem and the industrial devices, the experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out for various strength of a shock wave. A simple open end shock tube with the flange at the tube *** used and the numerical calculation using the TVD scheme was performed. The effective equations which concerns with the magnitude of an impulsive wave generated by the emission of a shock wave have been obtained from the procedure of the open end correction based on the aeroacoustic theory and the numerical results. The influence of open end correction length and the diameter of a flange on the magnitude of an impulsive wave has been discussed.

Analysis of stress fractures in athletes based on our clinical experience

AIM:To analyze stress fractures in athletes based on experience from our sports medicine ***:We investigated the association between stress fractures and age,sex,sports level,sports activity,and skeletal site in athletes seen at our sports medicine clinic between September 1991 and April *** fractures of the pars interarticularis were excluded from this ***:During this period(18 years and 8 mo),14276 patients(9215 males and 5061 females)consulted our clinic because of sports-related injuries,and 263 patients(1.8%)[171 males(1.9%)and 92 females(1.8%)]sustained stress *** average age of the patients with stress fractures was 20.2 years(range 10-46 years);112 patients(42.6%)were 15-19 years of age and 90(34.2%)were 20-24 years of ***,90 patients(34.2%)were active at a high recreational level and 173(65.8%)at a competitive *** highest proportion of stress fractures was seen in basketball athletes(21.3%),followed by baseball(13.7%),track and field(11.4%),rowing(9.5%),soccer(8.4%),aerobics(5.3%),and classical ballet(4.9%).The most common sites of stress fractures in these patients were the tibia(44.1%),followed by the rib(14.1%),metatarsal bone(12.9%),ulnar olecranon(8.7%)and pelvis(8.4%).The sites of the stress fractures varied from sport to *** ulnar olecranon was the most common stress fracture site in baseball players,and the rib was the most common in *** and classical ballet athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the tibia and metatarsal *** and field and soccer athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the tibia and pubic *** athletes predominantly sustained stress fractures of the *** and long distance female runners who sustained multiple stress fractures had the female athlete ***:The results of this analysis showed that stress fractures were seen in high-level young athletes,with similar proportions for males and females

Production and Accumulation of Xylooligosaccharides with Long Chains by Growing Culture and Xylanase of a Mutant Strain of Bacillus pumilus X-6-19

Bacillus pumilus X-6-9 isolated from soil and subsequently identified, produced xylooligosaccharides with long chains from xylan and accumulated them in the culture. By improving the culture conditions and mutating the bacterium, a 3.2-fold increase in the production of the xylooligosaccharides was established, when compared to the original culture conditions of B. pumilus X-6-19. The addition of D-glucose to the culture of the mutant strain U-3 of B. pumilus X-6-9 repressed the synthesis of β-xylosidase, but not xylanase. Thus, it was revealed that strain U-3 was a good organism for the production and accumulation of xylooligosaccharides with long chains from xylan by a microbial culture. Xylanase produced by strain U-3 was purified to homogeneity and characterized. The hydrolyzates generated by the purified xylanase contained xylobiose, xylotriose, xylotetraose, and xylopentaose, but not xylose.

抗密钥泄露安全的加密系统保证在攻击者获得(主)密钥部分信息的情况下仍具有语义安全性.文中设计了一个抗密钥泄露的双态仿射函数加密方案,该方案中加密策略和解密角色定义为仿射空间,并且具有再次委托能力.在双系统加密模型下,实现了自适应安全的抗有界的主密钥泄露和用户密钥连续泄露的加密方案,在标准模型下基于静态子群判定假设证明了该方案的安全性.同时,分析了方案中的主密钥和用户密钥的泄露界和泄露率,通过参数调整可以达到接近73%的泄露率,具有较好的抗泄露性质.

Re-evaluation of antitumor effects of combination chemotherapy with interferon-α and 5-fluorouracil for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM： To evaluate the efficacy of combination chemotherapy with interferon-α （IFNα） and 5-fluorouracil （5-FU） in patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma （HCC）. METHODS： Twenty-eight HCC patients in advanced stage were enrolled in the study. They were treated with IFNα/ 5-FU combination chemotherapy. One cycle of therapy lasted for 4 wk. IFNα （3×10^6 units） was subcutaneously injected thrice weekly on days 1, 3, and 5 for 3 wk, and 5-FU （500 mg/d） was administered via the proper hepatic artery for 5 consecutive days per week for 3 wk. No drugs were administered during the 4th wk. The effect of combination chemotherapy was evaluated in each patient alter every cycle based on the reduction of tumor volume. RESULTS： Alter the 1^st cycle of therapy, 16 patients showed a partial response （PR, 57.1%） but none showed a complete response （CR, 0%）. At the end of therapy, the number of patients who showed a CR, PR, or no response （NR） was 1, 10, and 17, respectively. The response rate for therapy （CR＋PR） was 21.5%. Biochemical tests before therapy were compared between responsive （CR＋PR） and non-responsive （NR） patients, but no significant differences were found for any of the parameters examined, indicating that no reasonable predictors could be identified in our analysis. CONCLUSION： Attempts should be made to discriminate between responders and non-responders by evaluating tumor size alter the first cycle of IFNα/5-FU combination chemotherapy. For non-responders, therapy should not proceed to the next cycle, and instead, different combination of anticancer drugs should be explored. 2005 The WJG Press and Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved

Absence of postzygotic isolating mechanisms:evidence from experimental hybridization between two species of tropical sea urchins

Two reef margin species of tropical sea urchins,Echinometra sp.C(Ec) and Echinometra oblonga(Eo),occur sympatrically on Okinawa intertidal reefs in southern *** between these species was examined through a series of cross-fertilization *** limited sperm concentrations,where conspecific crosses reached near 100% fertilization,both heterospecific crosses showed high fertilization rates(81%-85%).The compatibility of the gametes demonstrated that if gamete recognition molecules are involved in fertilization of these species,they are not strongly *** found that conspecific crosses reached peak fertilization levels much faster than did heterospecific crosses,indicating the presence of a prezygotic barrier to hybridization in the *** survival,metamorphosis,and juvenile and adult survival of hybrid groups were nearly identical to those of their parent *** from crosses in both directions developed normally through larval stages to sexually mature adults,indicating that neither gametic incompatibility nor hybrid inviability appeared to maintain reproductive isolation between these *** adults,Ec×Ec crosses gave the highest live weight,followed by Eo(ova)×Ec(sperm),Ec(ova)×Eo(sperm),and Eo×*** growth performance measures(viz.,test size,Aristotle's lantern length,and gonad index) of hybrid groups and their parental siblings showed the same *** phenotypic color patterns of the hybrids were closer to the maternal coloration,whereas spine length,tube-foot and gonad spicule characteristics,pedicellaria valve length,and gamete sizes showed intermediate *** F 1 hybrids were completely fertile and displayed high fertilization success in F 1 backcrosses,eliminating the likelihood that hybrid sterility is a postzygotic mechanism of reproductive ***,intensive surveys failed to find hybrid individuals in the field,suggesting the lack or rarity of natural *** stron
