Height growth, diameter-height relationships and branching architecture of Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata in early regeneration stages in Anhui Province, eastern China: effects of light intensity and regeneration mode

To determine the growth strategies during early regeneration stages of two major coniferous species （Pinus massoniana and Cunninghamia lanceolata） in a secondary mixed coniferous forest in the Huangshan region of Anhui Province, eastern China, we examined height growth, diameter-height relationship and the relationship between main stem and lateral branch elongation in saplings, with a particular focus on the effects of light intensity and regeneration mode （seedlings versus sprouts）. When light intensity was sufficiently high, the extension growth of main stems was greater and more positively related to initial size for P. massoniana than for C. lanceolata. The slenderness of the stem form increased in the following order： C. lanceolata seedlings 〈 P. massoniana seedlings 〈 C. lanceolata sprouts. P. massoniana became less slender with increasing light intensity. P. massoniana had shorter branches than C. lanceolata given the same main stem elongation. Growth allocation depended more strongly on light intensity for P. massoniana than for C. lanceolata, with more growth allocated to the main stem under dark conditions. These results suggest that P. massoniana is a typical shade avoider; this species gives priority to extension growth of the main stem, especially when it is shaded. In contrast, C. lanceolata is a shade tolerator; this species allocates more biomass to radial growth of its main stems and to extension growth of branches. Based on these results, the ecological characteristics of P. massoniana and C. lanceolata and the roles of seedlings and sprouts are discussed in relation to stand dynamics of the mixed forests of P. massoniana and C. lanceolata in eastern China.

Malnutrition Assessed Using the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index Is Associated with Preoperative Incidence of Deep Vein Thrombosis in Japanese Patients Undergoing Total Knee Arthroplasty

Purpose: Few studies have evaluated the association between malnutrition and the risk of preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in patients undergoing primary total joint arthroplasty. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of preoperative DVT in Japanese patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) and the importance of malnutrition in the risk of preoperative DVT. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 394 patients admitted for primary TKA at our institution between January 2019 and December 2023. All patients scheduled for TKA at our institution had serum D-dimer levels measured preoperatively. Lower-limb ultrasonography was examined to confirm the presence of DVT in patients with D-dimer levels ≥ 1.0 µg/mL or who were considered to be at high risk of DVT by the treating physician. Based on the results of lower-limb ultrasonography, all patients were divided into the non-DVT and DVT groups. The incidence of and risk factors for preoperative DVT were investigated, as well as the correlation of DVT with the patient’s nutritional parameters. We used two representative tools for nutritional assessment: the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI) and Controlling Nutritional Status Score. Results: The mean age was 77.8 ± 6.9 years. Preoperative DVT was diagnosed in 57 of the 394 (14.5%) patients. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that advanced age and malnutrition status, assessed using the GNRI, were independent risk factors for preoperative DVT. Conclusion: A high incidence of preoperative DVT was observed in patients who underwent TKA. Malnutrition status, as assessed using the GNRI, increased the risk of preoperative DVT. Our findings suggest that clinicians should consider these factors when tailoring preventive strategies to mitigate DVT risk in patients undergoing TKA.

对景观照片进行有效的分类是数据处理和环境分析中至关重要的一步。随着地理信息的收集逐渐采用众包模式,越来越多的研究开始利用带有地理标记的照片,将人们对场所的感知与互动可视化,并探究场所的美学、文化和游憩价值。近年来,图像识别机器学习算法的应用极大提高了关键词匹配的效率,并实现了大批量照片的自动分类。然而,这类方法在景观分类实践中—尤其是针对具有相似特点的均质化景观—应用仍显不足。本研究利用谷歌云视觉API和多层次聚类法,研发了一种半自动化的分类器来识别均质化景观照片,并将其应用于日本东京桥区城市河流均质化景观照片的分类中。分类器将所有河流景观划分为9个特征组,这些特征组的视觉印象与人们的直观感知一致。研究中所应用的混淆矩阵显示,分类器分类结果总体上的准确性达82.61%,表明机器分类与人工分类的结果十分相近。因此,该分类器对均质化河流景观照片的分类切实有效。这种方法可大力推动评估过程中的公众参与及城市旅游管理。

Malnutrition and Its Association with the Mortality of Patients with Femoral Intertrochanteric Fractures: A Retrospective Analysis of Japanese Patients

Background: The incidence of femoral intertrochanteric fractures in older adults is higher than that of femoral neck fractures;however, both conditions are often analyzed together as proximal femoral fractures. Considering the difference in treatment, postoperative complication, and mortality risk, these two fractures should be analyzed separately. This study aimed to analyze 1-year mortality and its risk factors in patients with surgically treated femoral intertrochanteric fractures. Methods: Consecutive patients with intertrochanteric fractures who underwent surgical interventions at our institution between January 2017 and December 2021 were retrospectively reviewed. A total of 238 patients were eligible for inclusion in this study. Patients’ demographic and clinical information were retrospectively collected. Patients were divided into the 1-year mortality (n = 16) and survival (n = 222) groups. The incidence of 1-year mortality and its independent risk factors were investigated using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. Results: The mean age of patients was 85.6 ± 8.5 years. The 1-year mortality rate was 6.7% (16/238). Preoperative albumin level, the Geriatric Nutritional Risk Index (GNRI), and malnutrition status (GNRI p = 0.02, p = 0.02, and p = 0.0011, respectively). Multivariate analysis showed that malnutrition status (GNRI p = 0.035) was an independent risk factor for 1-year mortality. Conclusion: Malnutrition status assessed using GNRI (GNRI < 92) was an independent risk factor for 1-year mortality. Our findings suggest that GNRI may be an effective screening tool for predicting postoperative 1-year mortality of patients with surgically treated femoral intertrochanteric fractures.

Detecting Communities in K-Partite K-Uniform (Hyper)Networks

In social tagging systems such as Delicious and Flickr,users collaboratively manage tags to annotate ***,a social tagging system can be modeled as a （user,tag,resource） hypernetwork,where there are three different types of nodes,namely users,resources and tags,and each hyperedge has three end nodes,connecting a user,a resource and a tag that the user employs to annotate the *** how can we automatically cluster related users,resources and tags,respectively？ This is a problem of community detection in a 3-partite,3-uniform *** generally,given a K-partite K-uniform （hyper）network,where each （hyper）edge is a K-tuple composed of nodes of K different types,how can we automatically detect communities for nodes of different types？ In this paper,by turning this problem into a problem of finding an efficient compression of the （hyper）network＇s structure,we propose a quality function for measuring the goodness of partitions of a K-partite K-uniform （hyper）network into communities,and develop a fast community detection method based on *** method overcomes the limitations of state of the art techniques and has several desired properties such as comprehensive,parameter-free,and *** compare our method with existing methods in both synthetic and real-world datasets.

Evaluation of high-temperature tensile behavior for metal foils by a novel resistance heating assisted tensile testing system using samples with optimized structures

To evaluate the tensile behavior of metal foils by resistance heating(RH)assisted tensile testing system accurately,this study proposed to embed a digital image correlation(DIC)system with laser speckles for the measurement of full-field strain ***,the sample structures were optimized to achieve uniform temperature and strain *** infrared camera was used to monitor the temperature *** samples instead of dog-bone shaped samples were proposed.A model for calculating the temperature distribution was established to optimize the sample *** parameters that influence the temperature distribution and tensile behavior were *** results,compared to the strain measured by a non-contact extensometer,the maximum deviation of the strain measured by DIC was less than 6%when the nominal strain was larger than *** is confirmed that the proposed tensile testing system is reliable for measuring the temperature and full-field strain *** shape influenced temperature distributions of smaller samples while it almost had no influence on the temperature distributions of larger *** temperature difference was not affected by the material type but by the sample *** proposed rectangular shape was validated to be feasible for RH assisted tensile *** sample length was successfully optimized for a more uniform temperature distribution by the established *** the tensile deformation was not influenced by the sample shape,the temperature distribution resulted in a non-uniform strain distribution before achieving ultimate tensile *** effective sample length between two clamping jigs contributed to a more uniform temperature distribution and material deformation.A more accurate evaluation of high-temperature tensile behavior for metal foils can be achieved by the proposed RH assisted tensile testing system using rectangular samples with an optimized structure.

Evaluation of Important Factors Affecting Quench Distortion of Carburized Hypoid Gear with Shaft by Using Computer Simulation Methods

To minimize quenching distortion and dispersion, carburizing and quenching process conditions must be optimized; this includes the parts racking design used for quenching. We investigated some factors affecting carburized quenching distortion with an experiment using a hypoid gear having a shaft and with numerical simulation methods. The experimental results and those obtained from simulation were generally in agreement. Focusing on the surface temperature distribution in the gear, we studied quenching distortion characteristics in terms of changes in tooth profile and helix deviation. In our experiments, distortions occur during quenching in 373 K oil after austenitized temperature treatments conducted with various attitudes. We calculated the distortions by simulating the carburized oil-quenching process for the hypoid gear. Our results show large differences between the cooling rates of the tooth toe, middle section, and heel edges, and these greatly influence the change in tooth profile and helix deviation. We found that reducing the differences in temperatures on the gear surfaces during quenching is most important for minimizing the quench distortion of the hypoid gear.
