Effect of combining biogeotextile and vegetation cover on the protection of steep slope of highway in northern China: A runoff plot experiment

Biogeotextiles can be used to facilitate the formation of vegetation cover and to reduce soil *** have demonstrated that only biogeotextile or vegetation cover can greatly reduce soil ***, information about the effects of the combination of biogeotextile and vegetation cover on soil erosion is still limited, despite that the combination is the commonly practical form for bare road slope protection. Experimental plots, consisting of a relatively loose surface layer and a compacted sublayer,were constructed using movable soil-bin trolleys(200 × 100 × 40 cm3) filled with silt loam sieved through 1-cm screen. The plots were seeded with a seed mixture of tall fescue(Festuca elata Keng ex ***) and alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) as a grass-legume regime. Then the plots were covered with three types of biogeotextile, i.e., coir blanket(CB), mixed coir-straw blanket(MB), and straw blanket(SB).A bare slope(BS) was constructed as the control experiment. Irrigation was applied to ensure vegetation germination and growth. Plant characteristics were measured after every 20 days. Laboratory simulated rainfall of 71 mm/h intensity was applied to each plot for 60 min after 20, 40, and 60 days. Surface runoff and sediment were collected every 5 min during rainfall. The results showed that the MB and SB promoted increased total emergence density of plants by 47% and 23%, respectively, compared to case of vegetation growth without biogeotextiles. The dense structure of the CB impeded the emergence of alfalfa, leading to 9% lower total emergence density. Compared with bare slope(0 day BS), biogeotextiles increased runoff by 3%(MB)-19%(CB) and reduced erosion by 96%(MB and SB)-98%(CB). After 60 days,vegetation cover reduced runoff by 54% and reduced erosion by 81% compared with the BS case. In the sewage treatment process,facilitating the conversion of pollutants into value-added resources holds great potential for reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions and promoting economic *** granule polypeptide(CGP),a recently discovered high value-added biopolymer present in activated sludge,has provided new avenues for the recovery of ***,the mechanisms that regulate CGP synthesis and the characteristics of this biopolymer in activated sludge remain unclear thus *** study investigated the synthesis of CGP,polyhydroxyalkanoates(PHA),and alginate-like exopolysaccharides(ALE)in various microbial aggregates under different carbon sources feeding *** results showed that the CGP yields was superior that of PHA and ALE when subjected to identical carbon source feeding ***,biofilm was more conducive to CGP accumulation than floc *** with glucose and methanol,sodium acetate significantly enriched the CGP synthetase-encoding gene(cphAabundance=~17419),resulting in the highest CGP yield(average 107.1 mg/g MLSS)in both biofilm and floc *** study is the first to reported the characteristic fluorescence of CGP(Ex/Em=~360/450 nm)caused by the aggregated luminescence of arginine on the side ***,this study highlights the potential application of CGP as a fluorescent material and offers insights into CGP recovery from activated sludge in wastewater treatment plants.

Backfilling is a common practice in the mining industry and the backfilling performance plays a significant role in supporting the surrounding rock *** evaluate the backfilling performance,an experimental apparatus has been developed to understand how backfill affects the compressive strength of sandstone specimens in the *** were selected to model the backfill and divided into six groups with different particle sizes using a set of standard *** backfilling pebbles with three types of particle size compositions were then produced,*** gradation,two adjacent gradations,and increasingly widening gradations.A series of compressive tests were carried out to study the mechanical behavior of the sandstone specimens confined by these *** effects of the gradations of the filled pebbles on the peak and residual compressive strengths were *** is found that the increasing amount of the compressive strength is over 10%in most cases,even up to 20%.Based on the experiment data,the increasing amount was also estimated theoretically under some assumptions and it further confirmed the experimental *** effects are closely related to the gradations of the filled pebbles except for their dense degree.

The technology of trailing peening is a kind of promisingly bran-new technology which can be used to control weldingstress and distortion of Ti alloy thin plate. Control of TC4 Ti alloy thn plate welding stress and distortion underthe condition of conventional welding and trailing peening is performed, respectively. The results show that thetechnology of trailing peening effectively reduces deflection and transverse shrinkage of thin plate weldment. Themaximum deflection is decreased from 15 mm under the conditior of conventional welding to 5 mm, while the weldtransverse shrinkage is decreased from 0.5 mm to about 0.1 mm.

Mechanical cutting provides one of the most flexible and environmentally friendly excavation *** has attracted numerous efforts to model the rock chipping and fragmentation process,especially using the explicit finite element method(FEM) and bonded particle model(BPM),in order to improve cutting *** study investigates the application of a general-purpose graphic-processing-unit parallelised hybrid finite-discrete element method(FDEM) which enjoys the advantages of both explicit FEM and BPM,in modelling the rock chipping and fragmentation process in the rock scratch test of mechanical rock *** input parameters of FDEM are determined through a calibration procedure of modelling conventional Brazilian tensile and uniaxial compressive tests of limestone,A series of scratch tests with various cutting velocities,cutter rake angles and cutting depths is then modelled using FDEM with calibrated input parameters.A few cycles of cutter/rock interactions,including their engagement and detachment process,are modelled for each case,which is conducted for the first time to the best knowledge of the authors,thanks to the general purpose graphic processing units(GPGPU) *** failure mechanism,cutting force,chipping morphology and effect of various factors on them are discussed on the basis of the modelled ***,it is concluded that GPGPU-parallelised FDEM provides a powerful tool to further study rock cutting and improve cutting efficiencies since it can explicitly capture different fracture mechanisms contributing to the rock chipping as well as chip formation and the separation process in mechanical ***,it is concluded that chipping is mostly owed to the mix-mode Ⅰ-Ⅱ fracture in all cases although mode Ⅱ cracks and mode Ⅰ cracks are the dominant failures in rock cutting with shallow and deep cutting depths,*** chip morphology is found to be a function of cutter velocdty,cutting depth and cutter rake angl

In Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM),the'tonifying kidney and benefiting marrow'(TKBM)method is based on the theory that kidney controls bones,while marrow moistens *** have been aboundant theoretical studies on kidney controlling bones since Huangdi's Internal ***-er,there are too few ones about the marrow moistening the *** generally use the tonifying kidney method instead of the TKBM method,which causes lack of a unified standard and theoretical basis in evaluating the TKBM ***,we first proposed the hypothesis that deficiency of marrow sea causes ***,we prove the scientific validity of this hypothesis from the side of the TCM theory on the relationship among kidney,bone and marrow sea physiologically and *** on this,we find that the TCM theory provides theoretical basis for deficiency of marrow sea causing *** the other side,Western Medicine theory holds that(a)physiologically,the brain regulates the bone mass via three pathways:the neuro-osteogenic network,neuro-endocrine-bone network,and neuropeptide-bone network;(b)pathologically,brain impacts bone mass via three major passways including the regulation of the sympathetic nervous system,secreting hormones that directly act on bone cells and regulating the synthesis and secretion of hormones in the intermediary organs,and neuropeptides such as neuropeptide Y(NPY),substance P(SP),and calcitonin gene-related peptide(CGRP).Evidences involving estrogen deficiency,sympatheticotonia,or neuropeptides imbalance prove that brain-bone mass regulation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of ***,we find that kidney invigoration method can change the concentrations of central neurotransmitters of norepinephrine and glutamate to regulate neuro-osteogenic network,and promote the recovery of ovarian function and have an estrogen-like effect by regulating the hypothalamus-pituitary-ovarian axis,which thus influences bone

In Part 2 of the paper on the Smart-Cut process, the effects of bonding flaws characterized by the size and internal pressure before and after splitting are studied by using fracture mechanics models. It is found that the bonding flaws with large size are prone to cause severe deviation of defect growth, leading to a non-transferred area of thin layer when splitting. In a practical Smart-Cut process where the internal pressure of bonding flaws is very small, large interfacial defects always promote defect growth in the splitting process. Meanwhile, increasing the internal pressure of the bonding flaws decreases the defect growth and its deviation before splitting. The mechanism of relaxation of stiffener constraint is proposed to clarify the effect of bonding flaws. Moreover, the progress of the splitting process is analyzed when bonding flaws are present. After splitting, those bonding flaws with large size and high internal pressure are vulnerable for the blistering of the thin film during high-temperature annealing.
