Apical hook is a simple curved structure formed at the upper part of hypocotyls when dicot seeds germinate in darkness.The hook structure is transient but essential for seedlings’survival during soil emergence due to its efficient protection of the delicate shoot apex from mechanical injury.As a superb model system for studying plant differential growth,apical hook has fascinated botanists as early as the Darwin age,and significant advances have been achieved at both the morphological and molecular levels to understand how apical hook development is regulated.Here,we will mainly summarize the research progress at these two levels.We will also briefly compare the growth dynamics between apical hook and hypocotyl gravitropic bending at early seed germination phase,with the aim to deduce a certain consensus on their connections.Finally,we will outline the remaining questions and future research perspectives for apical hook development.

Both phytohormone signaling and epigenetic mechanisms have long been known to play crucial roles in plant development and plasticity in response to ambient stimuli.Indeed,diverse signaling pathways mediated by phytohormones and epigenetic processes integrate multiple upstream signals to regulate various plant traits.Emerging evidence indicates that phytohormones and epigenetic processes interact at multiple levels.In this review,we summarize the current knowledge of the interplay between phytohormones and epigenetic processes from the perspective of phytohormone biology.We also review chemical regulators used in epigenetic studies and propose strategies for developing novel regulators using multidisciplinary approaches.

As a bone-confined chronic degenerative disorder,the progression of osteoporosis is characterized by abnormal crosstalk between osteoblasts and osteoclasts,leading to an imbalance of bone remodeling in adults.1 Several studies reported that arachidonic acid ester 12 lipoxygenase(ALOX12)acts as a regulator in bone genesis by participating in the activation of the peroxisome proliferatoractivated receptor(PPARG)pathway through its reaction product.

Encapsulation of Fe nanoparticles in zeolite is a promising way to significantly improve the catalytic activity and stability of Fe-based catalysts during the degradation process of organic pollutants.Herein,Fe nanocatalysts were encapsulated into silicalite-1(S-1)zeolite by using a ligand-protected method(with dicyandiamide(DCD)as a organic ligand)under direct hydrothermal synthesis condition.High-resolution transmission electron microscopy(HRTEM)results confirmed the high dispersion of Fe nanocatalysts which were successfully encapsulated within the voids among the primary particles of the S-1 zeolite.The developed S-1 zeolite encapsulated Fe nanocatalyst(Fe@S-1)exhibited significantly improved catalytic activity and reusability in the catalytic degradation process of methylene blue(MB).Specifically,the developed Fe0.021@S-1 catalyst showed high catalytic degradation activity,giving a high MB degradation efficiency of 100%in 30 min,outperformed the conventional impregnated catalyst(Fe/S-1).Moreover,the Fe@S-1 catalyst afforded an outstanding stability,showing only ca.7.9%activity loss after five cycling tests,while the Fe/S-1 catalyst presented a significantly activity loss of 50.9%after only three cycles.Notably,the encapsulation strategy enabled a relatively lower Fe loading in the Fe@S-1 catalyst in comparison with that of the Fe/S-1 catalyst,i.e.,0.35%vs.0.81%(mass).Radical scavenging experiments along with electron spin resonance(ESR)measurements confirmed that the major role ofOH in the MB degradation process.Specifically,Fe@S-1 catalyst with high molar ratio of[Fe(DCD)]Cl3 is beneficial to form Fe complexes/nanoclusters in the voids(which has large pore size of 1–2 nm)among the primary particles of the zeolite,and thus improving the diffusion and accessibility of reactants to Fe active sites,and thus exhibiting a relatively higher degradation efficiency.This work demonstrates that zeolite-encapsulated Fe nanocatalysts present potential applications in the advanced oxidation of wastewater treatment.

A Beidou 3(BD3)system-based power reference station can provide high-precision time synchronization for power distribution systems by sending synchronization data packets to devices in a multi-hop routing fashion.However,optimizing route selection to reduce both time synchronization error and delay is a challenging problem.In this paper,we establish a software-defined network-enabled power reference station time synchronization framework based on BD3.Then,we formulate the joint problem to minimize cumulative synchronization error and delay through multi-hop route selection optimization.A back propagation(BP)neural network-improved intelligent time synchronization route selection algorithm named BP-RS is proposed to learn the optimal route selection,which uses a BP neural network to dynamically adjust the exploration factor to achieve rapid convergence.Simulation results show the superior performance of BP-RS in synchronization delay,synchronization error,and adaptability with changing routing topologies.

Simultaneously finding active predictors and controlling the false discovery rate(FDR) for high-dimensional survival data is an important but challenging statistical problem. In this paper, the authors propose a novel variable selection procedure with error rate control for the high-dimensional Cox model. By adopting a data-splitting strategy, the authors construct a series of symmetric statistics and then utilize the symmetry property to derive a data-driven threshold to achieve error rate control.The authors establish finite-sample and asymptotic FDR control results under some mild conditions.Simulation results as well as a real data application show that the proposed approach successfully controls FDR and is often more powerful than the competing approaches.

Sugarcane leaves-derived polyphenols(SLP)have been demonstrated to have diverse health-promoting benefits,but the mechanism of action has not been fully elucidated.This study aimed to investigate the anti-metabolic disease effects of SLP and the underlying mechanisms in mice.In the current study,we prepared the SLP mainly consisting of three flavonoid glycosides,three phenol derivatives,and two lignans including one new compound,and further demonstrated that SLP reduced body weight gain and fat accumulation,improved glucose and lipid metabolism disorders,ameliorated hepatic steatosis,and regulated short-chain fatty acids(SCFAs)production and secondary bile acids metabolism in ob/ob mice.Notably,SLP largely altered the gut microbiota composition,especially enriching the commensal bacteria Akkermansia muciniphila and Bacteroides acidifaciens.Oral gavage with the above two strains ameliorated metabolic syndrome(MetS),regulated secondary bile acid metabolism,and increased the production of SCFAs in high-fat diet(HFD)-induced obese mice.These results demonstrated that SLP could be used as a prebiotic to attenuate MetS via regulating gut microbiota composition and further activating the secondary bile acids-mediated gut-adipose axis.

Background: Primary cardiac lipoma is very rare, and no consensus has been developed regarding its ideal treatment strategy. This study reviewed the surgical treatment of cardiac lipomas in 20 patients over 20 years. Methods: Twenty patients with cardiac lipomas were treated at Fuwai Hospital, National Center for Cardiovascular Diseases, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences and Peking Union Medical College from January 1, 2002, to January 1, 2022. The patients' clinical data and pathological reports were retrospectively analyzed, and the follow-up with a range of 1 year to 20 years was conducted. Results: The cardiac lipomas were located in the right atrium (RA) or superior vena cava (SVC) in seven patients (35%) (RA in six patients and SVC in one patient), left ventricle in eight patients (40%) (left ventricular chamber in four patients and left ventricular subepicardium and myocardium in four patients), right ventricle in three patients (15%) (right ventricular chamber in one patient and right ventricular subepicardial layer and myocardium in two patients), subepicardial interventricular groove in one patient (5%), and pericardium in one patient (5%). Complete resection was achieved in 14 patients (70%), including seven patients with lipomas in the RA or SVC. Incomplete resection occurred in six patients (30%) with lipomas in the ventricles. No perioperative deaths occurred. Long-term follow-up was conducted for 19 patients (95%), including two (10%) who died. Both patients who died had lipomas incompletely resected due to ventricles involvement, and preoperative malignant arrhythmias persisted post-operatively. Conclusions: The complete resection rate was high, and the long-term prognosis was satisfactory in patients with cardiac lipomas that did not involve the ventricle. The complete resection rate was low in patients with cardiac lipomas in ventricles;and complications, including malignant arrhythmia, were common. The development of phononic crystals, especially their interaction with topological insulators, allows exploration of the anomalous properties of acoustic/elastic waves for various applications. However, rapidly and inversely exploring the geometry of specific targets remains a major challenge. In this work, we show how machine learning can address this challenge by studying phononic crystal beams using two different inverse design schemes. We first develop the theory of phononic beams using the transfer matrix method. Then, we use the reinforcement learning algorithm to effectively and inversely design the structural parameters to maximize the bandgap width. Furthermore, we employ the tandem-architecture neural network to solve the training-difficulty problem caused by inconsistent data and complete the task of inverse structure design with the targeted topological properties. The two inverse-design schemes have different adaptabilities, and both are characterized by high efficiency and stability. This work provides deep insights into the combination of machine learning, topological property,and phononic crystals and offers a reliable platform for rapidly and inversely designing complex material and structure properties.
