Evaluation of rainfall threshold models for debris flow initiation in the Jiangjia Gully,Yunnan Province,China

Systematically determining the discriminatory power of various rainfall properties and their combinations in identifying debris flow occurrence is crucial for early warning systems.In this study,we evaluated the discriminatory power of different univariate and multivariate rainfall threshold models in identifying triggering conditions of debris flow in the Jiangjia Gully,Yunnan Province,China.The univariate models used single rainfall properties as indicators,including total rainfall(R_(tot)),rainfall duration(D),mean intensity(I_(mean)),absolute energy(Eabs),storm kinetic energy(E_(s)),antecedent rainfall(R_(a)),and maximum rainfall intensity over various durations(I_(max_dur)).The evaluation reveals that the I_(max_dur)and Eabs models have the best performance,followed by the E_(s),R_(tot),and I_(mean)models,while the D and R_(a)models have poor performances.Specifically,the I_(max_dur)model has the highest performance metrics at a 40-min duration.We used logistic regression to combine at least two rainfall properties to establish multivariate threshold models.The results show that adding D or R_(a)to the models dominated by Eabs,E_(s),R_(tot),or I_(mean)generally improve their performances,specifically when D is combined with I_(mean)or when R_(a)is combined with Eabs or E_(s).Including R_(a)in the I_(max_dur)model,it performs better than the univariate I_(max_dur)model.A power-law relationship between I_(max_dur)and R_(a)or between Eabs and R_(a)has better performance than the traditional I_(mean)–D model,while the performance of the E_(s)–R_(a)model is moderate.Our evaluation reemphasizes the important role of the maximum intensity over short durations in debris flow occurrence.It also highlights the importance of systematically investigating the role of R_(a)in establishing rainfall thresholds for triggering debris flow.Given the regional variations in rainfall patterns worldwide,it is necessary to evaluate the findings of this study across diverse watersheds.

Diatomic Pd catalyst with conjugated backbone for synergistic electrochemical CO_(2)reduction

Double-site catalysts have attracted widespread attention in the field of electrocatalysis due to their high metal loading,adjustable active centres,and electronic valence states.However,the development of bimetallic sites catalysts that coordinate with definite atoms is still in the exploratory stage.Here,we designed and synthesized a bimetallic palladium complex(BPB-Pd_(2))with conjugated backbone.The supported BPB-Pd_(2)was applied to electrochemical CO_(2)reduction reaction(CO_(2)RR)for the first time.The as-obtained BPB-Pd_(2)gives an exceptional Faradaic efficiency of CO(FECO)of 94.4%at−0.80 V vs.reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE),which is significantly superior to monoatomic palladium catalyst(BPB-Pd1).The density functional theory(DFT)calculations revealed that the essential reason for the outstanding activity of BPB-Pd_(2)toward CO_(2)RR was that the electronic effect between diatomic palladium reduces the free energy change for CO_(2)RR process.Thus,BPB-Pd_(2)exhibits moderate free energy change to form COOH*intermediate,which was beneficial for the generation of CO in CO_(2)RR.

Dynamic-based model for calculating the boulder impact force in debris flow

The boulder impact force in debris flow is generally calculated by static methods such as the cantilever beam models.However,these methods cannot describe the dynamic scenario of boulder collision on structures,so the inertia and damping effects of the structures are not involved causing an overestimation on the boulder impact force.In order to address this issue,a dynamic-based model for calculating the boulder impact force of a debris flow was proposed in this study,and the dynamic characteristics of a cantilever beam with multiple degrees of freedom under boulder collision were investigated.By using the drop-weight method to simulate boulders within debris flow,seven experiments of drop-weight impacting the cantilever beam were used to calibrate the error of the dynamicbased model.Results indicate that the dynamic-based model is able to reconstruct the impact force history on the cantilever beam during impact time and the error of dynamic-based model is 15.3%in calculating boulder impact force,significantly outperforming the cantilever beam model’s error of 285%.Therefore,the dynamic-based model can overcome the drawbacks of the static-based models and provide a more reliable theoretical foundation for the engineering design of debris flow control structures.

MXenes are a family of two-dimensional(2D)layered transition metal carbides/nitrides that show promising potential for energy storage applications due to their high-specific surface areas,excellent electron conductivity,good hydrophilicity,and tunable terminations.Among various types of MXenes,Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x) is the most widely studied for use in capacitive energy storage applications,especially in supercapacitors(SCs).However,the stacking and oxidation of MXene sheets inevitably lead to a significant loss of electrochemically active sites.To overcome such challenges,carbon materials are frequently incorporated into MXenes to enhance their electrochemical properties.This review introduces the common strategies used for synthesizing Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x),followed by a comprehensive overview of recent developments in Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)/carbon composites as electrode materials for SCs.Ti_(3)C_(2)T_(x)/carbon composites are categorized based on the dimensions of carbons,including 0D carbon dots,1D carbon nanotubes and fibers,2D graphene,and 3D carbon materials(activated carbon,polymer-derived carbon,etc.).Finally,this review also provides a perspective on developing novel MXenes/carbon composites as electrodes for application in SCs.

Brain Transcriptome Analysis Reveals Metabolic Changes Adapting to Hyperhaline or Hypohaline Environments in Spotted Scat(Scatophagus argus)

The fish brain is crucial for adjusting to environmental changes.Metabolic changes play a vital role in the adaptation to salinity change in aquatic animals.However,few studies have evaluated the responses of the fish brain to salinity changes.To evaluate the response to various salinities,spotted scat(Scatophagus argus)was cultured in water with salinity levels of 5(low salinity:LS),25(control group:Ctrl),and 35(high salinity group:HS)for 22 days.The brain transcriptome was analyzed.In total,1698 differentially expressed genes(DEGs)were identified between the HS and Ctrl groups,and 841 DEGs were identified between the LS and Ctrl groups.KEGG analysis showed that the DEGs in the HS vs.Ctrl comparison were involved in steroid biosynthesis,terpenoid backbone biosynthesis,fatty acid biosynthesis,ascorbate and aldarate metabolism,other types of O-glycan biosynthesis,and fatty acid metabolism.Glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism,one carbon pool by folate,steroid biosynthesis,and cysteine and methionine metabolism were significantly enriched in the LS vs.Ctrl comparison.Additionally,the genes related to metabolism(acc,fas,hmgcr,hmgcs1,mvd,soat1,nsdhl,sqle,cel,fdft1,dnmt3a and mtr)were significantly up-regulated in the HS vs.Ctrl comparison.The genes related to metabolism(lipa,sqle,acc,fas,bhmt,mpst,dnmt3a,mtr,hao2,LOC111225351 and hmgcs1)were significantly up-regulated,while hmgcr and soat1 were significantly down-regulated in the LS vs.Ctrl compparison.These results suggest that salinity stress affects signaling pathways and genes’expressions involved in metabolic processes in the brain,and the differences in metabolism play an important role in adaptation to hyperhaline or hypohaline environments in spotted scat.This research provides a comprehensive overview of transcriptional changes in the brain under hyperhaline or hypohaline conditions,which is helpful to understand the mechanisms underlying salinity adaptation in euryhaline fishes.

In this paper,we consider an inference problem for an Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by a general one-dimensional centered Gaussian process(G_(t))t≥0.The second order mixed partial derivative of the covariance function R(t,s)=E[GtGs]can be decomposed into two parts,one of which coincides with that of fractional Brownian motion and the other of which is bounded by(ts)^(β-1)up to a constant factor.This condition is valid for a class of continuous Gaussian processes that fails to be self-similar or to have stationary increments;some examples of this include the subfractional Brownian motion and the bi-fractional Brownian motion.Under this assumption,we study the parameter estimation for a drift parameter in the Ornstein-Uhlenbeck process driven by the Gaussian noise(G_(t))t≥0.For the least squares estimator and the second moment estimator constructed from the continuous observations,we prove the strong consistency and the asympotic normality,and obtain the Berry-Esséen bounds.The proof is based on the inner product's representation of the Hilbert space(h)associated with the Gaussian noise(G_(t))t≥0,and the estimation of the inner product based on the results of the Hilbert space associated with the fractional Brownian motion.

Nickel-based materials,including metallic Ni and Ni oxide,have been widely studied in the exploration of non-precious-metal hydrogen electrocatalysts,but neither pure Ni nor NiO is ideal for the hydrogen evolution reaction（HER） and hydrogen oxidation reaction（HOR）.In this paper,an oxygen insertion strategy was applied on nickel to regulate its hydrogen electrocatalytic performance,and the oxygen-inserted nickel catalyst was successfully obtained with the assistance of tungsten dioxide support（denoted as O-Ni/WO2）.The partial insertion of oxygen in Ni maintains the face-centered cubic arrangement of Ni atoms,simultaneously expanding the lattice and increasing the lattice spacing.Consequently,the adsorption strength of*H and*OH on Ni is optimized,thus resulting in superior electrocatalytic performance of0-Ni/WO2in alkaline HER/HOR.The Tafel slope of O-Ni/WO2@NF for HER is 56 mV dec-1,and the kinetic current density of O-Ni/WO2for HOR reaches 4.85 mA cm-2,which is ahead of most currently reported catalysts.Our proposed strategy of inserting an appropriate amount of anions into the metal lattice could provide more possibilities for the design of high-performance catalysts.
