240 nm AlGaN-based deep ultraviolet micro-LEDs:size effect versus edge effect

240 nm AlGaN-based micro-LEDs with different sizes are designed and fabricated.Then,the external quantum efficiency(EQE)and light extraction efficiency(LEE)are systematically investigated by comparing size and edge effects.Here,it is revealed that the peak optical output power increases by 81.83%with the size shrinking from 50.0 to 25.0μm.Thereinto,the LEE increases by 26.21%and the LEE enhancement mainly comes from the sidewall light extraction.Most notably,transversemagnetic(TM)mode light intensifies faster as the size shrinks due to the tilted mesa side-wall and Al reflector design.However,when it turns to 12.5μm sized micro-LEDs,the output power is lower than 25.0μm sized ones.The underlying mechanism is that even though protected by SiO2 passivation,the edge effect which leads to current leakage and Shockley-Read-Hall(SRH)recombination deteriorates rapidly with the size further shrinking.Moreover,the ratio of the p-contact area to mesa area is much lower,which deteriorates the p-type current spreading at the mesa edge.These findings show a role of thumb for the design of high efficiency micro-LEDs with wavelength below 250 nm,which will pave the way for wide applications of deep ultraviolet(DUV)micro-LEDs.

On the Security of Homomorphic Encryption Schemes with Restricted Decryption Oracles

Fully homomorphic encryption（FHE） can be used for privacy-preserving aggregation of medical data. In this typical application, the security against passive attacks has been well studied by li and Micciancio（2021）. In this paper, the authors further consider a “nearly passive” kind of attack, where the attacker may behave like a passive attacker in the view of the third-party server.To capture the security against this hard-to-detect attack, the authors propose a new notion of IND-CPArDsecurity. The authors show that the standard LWE encryption and its related FHE schemes can not defend against IND-CPArDattack, even under a stricter rule limiting the content and number of queries made by the attacker. To make the application of FHE schemes more secure, the authors discuss some possible modifications that may serve as countermeasures to IND-CPArDattack.

Vegetable crops provide a rich source of essential nutrients for humanity and represent critical economic values to global rural societies. However, genetic studies of vegetable crops have lagged behind major food crops, such as rice, wheat and maize,thereby limiting the application of molecular breeding. In the past decades, genome sequencing technologies have been increasingly applied in genetic studies and breeding of vegetables. In this review, we recapitulate recent progress on reference genome construction, population genomics and the exploitation of multi-omics datasets in vegetable crops. These advances have enabled an in-depth understanding of their domestication and evolution, and facilitated the genetic dissection of numerous agronomic traits, which jointly expedites the exploitation of state-of-the-art biotechnologies in vegetable breeding. We further provide perspectives of further directions for vegetable genomics and indicate how the ever-increasing omics data could accelerate genetic, biological studies and breeding in vegetable crops.

Inferential Statistics and Machine Learning Models for Short-TermWind Power Forecasting

The inherent randomness,intermittence and volatility of wind power generation compromise the quality of the wind power system,resulting in uncertainty in the system’s optimal scheduling.As a result,it’s critical to improve power quality and assure real-time power grid scheduling and grid-connected wind farm operation.Inferred statistics are utilized in this research to infer general features based on the selected information,confirming that there are differences between two forecasting categories:Forecast Category 1(0-11 h ahead)and Forecast Category 2(12-23 h ahead).In z-tests,the null hypothesis provides the corresponding quantitative findings.To verify the final performance of the prediction findings,five benchmark methodologies are used:Persistence model,LMNN(Multilayer Perceptron with LMlearningmethods),NARX(Nonlinear autoregressive exogenous neural networkmodel),LMRNN(RNNs with LM training methods)and LSTM(Long short-term memory neural network).Experiments using a real dataset show that the LSTM network has the highest forecasting accuracy when compared to other benchmark approaches including persistence model,LMNN,NARX network,and LMRNN,and the 23-steps forecasting accuracy has improved by 19.61%.

Approximate Optimal Filter Design for Vehicle System through Actor‑Critic Reinforcement Learning

Precise state and parameter estimations are essential for identification,analysis and control of vehicle engineering problems,especially under significant model and measurement uncertainties.The widely used filtering/estimation algorithms,such as Kalman series like Kalman filter,extended Kalman filter,unscented Kalman filter,and particle filter,generally aim to approach the true state/parameter distribution via iteratively updating the filter gain at each time step.However,the optimal-ity of these filters would be deteriorated by unrealistic initial condition or significant model error.Alternatively,this paper proposes to approximate the optimal filter gain by considering the effect factors within infinite time horizon,on the basis of estimation-control duality.The proposed approximate optimal filter(AOF)problem is designed and subsequently solved by actor-critic reinforcement learning(RL)method.The AOF design transforms the traditional optimal filtering problem with the minimum expected mean square error into an optimal control problem with the minimum accumulated estimation error,in which the estimation error is used as the surrogate system state and the infinite-horizon filter gain is the control input.The estimation-control duality is proved to hold when certain conditions about initial vehicle state distributions and policy structure are maintained.In order to evaluate of the effectiveness of AOF,a vehicle state estimation problem is then demonstrated and compared with the steady-state Kalman filter.The results showed that the obtained filter policy via RL with different discount factors can converge to theoretical optimal gain with an error within 5%,and the average estimation errors of vehicle slip angle and yaw rate are less than 1.5×10–4.

A nanoforest-based humidity sensor for respiration monitoring

Traditional humidity sensors for respiration monitoring applications have faced technical challenges,including low sensitivity,long recovery times,high parasitic capacitance and uncalibrated temperature drift.To overcome these problems,we present a triple-layer humidity sensor that comprises a nanoforest-based sensing capacitor,a thermistor,a microheater and a reference capacitor.When compared with traditional polyimide-based humidity sensors,this novel device has a sensitivity that is improved significantly by 8 times within a relative humidity range of 40-90%.Additionally,the integration of the microheater into the sensor can help to reduce its recovery time to 5 s.The use of the reference capacitor helps to eliminate parasitic capacitance,and the thermistor helps the sensor obtain a higher accuracy.These unique design aspects cause the sensor to have an excellent humidity sensing performance in respiration monitoring applications.Furthermore,through the adoption of machine learning algorithms,the sensor can distinguish different respiration states with an accuracy of 94%.Therefore,this humidity sensor design is expected to be used widely in both consumer electronics and intelligent medical instrument applications.

Intracranial pressure(ICP)is one of the most important indexes in neurosurgery.It is essential for doctors to determine the numeric value and changes of ICP,whether before or after an operation.Although external ventricular drainage(EVD)is the gold standard for monitoring ICP,more and more novel monitoring methods are being applied clinically.Invasive wired ICP monitoring is still the most commonly used in practice.Meanwhile,with the rise and development of various novel technologies,non-invasive types and invasive wireless types are gradually being used clinically or in the testing phase,as a complimentary approach of ICP management.By choosing appropriate monitoring methods,clinical neurosurgeons are able to obtain ICP values safely and effectively under particular conditions.This article introduces diverse monitoring methods and compares the advantages and disadvantages of different monitoring methods.Moreover,this review may enable clinical neurosurgeons to have a broader view of ICP monitoring.

The bZIP transcription factor ABSCISIC ACID INSENSITIVE5(ABI5)is a master regulator of seed germination and post-germinative growth in response to abscisic acid(ABA),but the detailed molecularmechanism by which it represses plant growth remains unclear.In this study,we used proximity labeling to map the neighboring proteome of ABI5 and identified FCS-liKE ZINC FINGER PROTEIN 13(FLZ13)as a novel ABI5 interaction partner.Phenotypic analysis of flz13 mutants and FLZ13-overexpressing lines demonstrated that FLZ13 acts as a positive regulator of ABA signaling.Transcriptomic analysis revealed that both FLZ13 and ABI5 downregulate the expression of ABA-repressed and growth-related genes involved in chlorophyll biosynthesis,photosynthesis,and cell wall organization,thereby repressing seed germination and seedling establishment in response to ABA.Further genetic analysis showed that FLZ13 and ABI5 function together to regulate seed germination.Collectively,our findings reveal a previously uncharacterized transcriptional regulatorymechanismby which ABA mediates inhibition of seed germination and seedling establishment.

Colloidal semiconductor nanocrystals(NCs)attract significant interest in recent years due to their narrow and tunable emission wavelength in the visible range,as well as high photoluminescence quantum yield(PLQY),which are highly desired in display technologies.The high-quality NCs have been recognized as vital luminescent materials in realizing next-generation display devices.With further development,NCs with near-unity PLQY have been successfully synthesized through engineering of the core/shell heterostructure.However,as the external quantum efficiency(EQE)of the nanocrystal light-emitting diodes(LEDs)approaches the theoretical limit of about 20%,the low out-coupling factor proposes a challenge of enhancing the performance of a device when using the spherical QDs.Hence,the anisotropic NCs like nanoplatelets(NPLs)are proposed as promising solutions to improve the performance of nanocrystal LEDs.In this review,we will summarize the synthetic strategies of twodimensional(2D)NPLs at first.Then,we will introduce fundamental concepts of LEDs,the main approaches to realize LEDs based on nanoplatelets,and the recent progress.Finally,the challenges and opportunities of LEDs based on anisotropic NCs are also presented.

B-SPliNE PATCHES AND TRANSFINITE INTERPOLATION METHOD FOR PDE CONTROLLED SIMULATION

This paper is to discuss an approach which combines B-spline patches and transfinite interpolation to establish a linear algebraic system for solving partial differential equations and modify the WEB-spline method developed by Klaus Hollig to derive this new idea.First of all,the authors replace the R-function method with transfinite interpolation to build a function which vanishes on boundaries. Secondly,the authors simulate the partial differential equation by directly applying differential operators to basis functions,which is similar to the RBF method rather than Hollig’s method.These new strategies then make the constructing of bases and the linear system much more straightforward.And as the interpolation is brought in,the design of schemes for solving practical PDEs can be more flexible. This new method is easy to carry out and suitable for simulations in the fields such as graphics to achieve rapid rendering.Especially when the specified precision is not very high,this method performs much faster than WEB-spline method.
